When traveling through Niagara USA, visitors can be transported back to a time when our country was in its infancy. A time when war and conflict filled our landscape and a nation was being born. From Harriet Tubman ushering countless fugitive slaves to freedom in Canada, to one of the early battles of the War of 1812, Niagara USAs role in history is significant and well documented. The stories are detailed across the region at countless museums, historic sites and parks. Niagara USA is filled with history that is waiting to be explored. Visit www.discover1812.com for all Bicentennial events.
Niagara usa
Surrounded by water, Niagara USA is an outdoor recreation wonderland that offers exciting opportunities for fishing and boating in places like Lake Ontario, the Niagara River and the Erie Canal. Cast away for world class fishing in Olcott, NY, named the "2012 Ultimate Fishing Town" by the World Fishing Network. Take a leisurely stroll or vigorous hike along the Niagara Gorge and while youre there be on the lookout for numerous gull varieties, waterfowl species and other bird life. The river corridor has been named as an "Important Bird Area", as designated by the National Audubon Society.
From an educational tour along the placid waters of the historic Erie Canal to a look into its underground caves and manmade wonders, visitors of all ages will enjoy Niagara USAs Canal Region. When it was opened in 1825, the Erie Canal was an engineering marvel for its system of locks in Lockport, NY. Visitors can now travel through the only double set of locks and better understand the importance of this 363-mile waterway.

Want to see the water falls up close and personal? Take a trip on the Cave of the Winds at Niagara Falls State Park. Since 1924, this attraction at the Falls is torn down and re-built every year.
Negative Ions: Although there isnt a lot of science to back this up, it made the list anyway. It is believed that the mist from Niagara Falls creates negative ions that increase the levels of the mood chemical, serotonin, helping to alleviate depression, relieve stress, and boost our daytime energy.
Daring: Niagara Falls has a longstanding history of attracting daredevils and thrill seekers. Annie Edson Taylor, a 63-year-old-school teacher was the first person to survive a trip over the Falls in a barrel. She is buried at Oakwood Cemetery (763 Portage Rd., Niagara Falls, NY (716) 284-5131. Free.) Want to learn more about daredevils? Visit the Daredevil Museum (303 Rainbow Blvd., Niagara Falls, NY 14303. (716) 282-4046. Free.)

BEAUTY AND PRAYER: Our Lady of Fatima Shrine (1023 Swann Rd., Lewiston, NY 14174 (716) 754-7489) has been a place of natural beauty, art, communal prayer and renewal to thousands who visit the awe-inspiring building and grounds. Walk down the Avenue of Saints (over 100 life-sized marble statues representing Saints from every race and walk of life) and be greeted by the magnificence of the Shrine, adorned with a Dome Basilica covered with two layers of glass and contour of the Northern Hemisphere of the globe. Climb 63 steps to the top where a graceful yet huge, 13-foot and 10 ton Vermont granite statue of Our Lady of Fatima will welcome you. From the top, see the Rosary Pool and take-in the grounds and countryside.
ROCK OUT: The quaint Village of Lewiston is transformed during the summer into a music lovers haven, as two concert series are held all summer long at Artpark (450 South Fourth St., Lewiston, NY 14092 (716) 754-4375) which attracts acclaimed musicians such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Peter Frampton and more. The performing arts venue also puts on paid concerts, musicals and childrens programming, as well as hiking and nature trails.
FOR THE BIRDS: Niagara USA is recognized as an international "Important Bird Area", as designated by the National Audubon Society. With more than 10 percent of the worlds population of sea gulls, a large population of Peregrine Falcons, Bald Eagles and an array of rare bird species, there are a number of unique birding opportunities at Joseph Davis State Park (4143 Lower River Rd., Lewiston, NY (716) 754-8213).

WHIRLPOOL: In sections of the Lower Niagara River, reversing waves can reach up to 15-feet in height, and the water, which moves at speeds of approximately 22 miles-per-hour form a unique whirlpool formation. Numerous hiking trails offer visitors a tremendous view of this phenomenon, while the Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours (115 S Water St., Lewiston, NY 14094 (888) 438-4444), offer an adventurous trip directly into the whirlpool on their high powered speed boats. Bring an extra set of clothes because you are sure to get wet on this excursion.

FISH TALE: In 2011, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service documented the natural reproduction of lake trout in the Lower Niagara River. This marks the first time in the history of New York State that lake trout have spawned in a river system and only the third time in the Great Lakes Basin. A large run of lake trout occurs in the Niagara River every fall and winter.

NIAGARA usa
Niagara USA is home to one of the most diverse and spectacular freshwater sport fisheries on the planet.
The Niagara River, Lake Ontario and Lake Erie are all within casting distance for Salmon, Trout, Bass, Walleye, Muskellunge and so much more. You can fish for many of the species year round. Outdoor fun doesnt stop with fishing. Birding, biking, hiking and boating are all available, too. Take your outdoor adventure to Niagara USA youre sure to satisfy your urge to enjoy all nature has to offer.
Sportfishing opportunities in Niagara USA are endless. Last year, Olcott Beach was recognized by the World Fishing Network as the "Ultimate Fishing Town" after a nationwide vote. While we wont diminish the magnitude of that feat, the fishing in Olcott is only a chapter in our fishing story. Wilson, Youngstown, Lewiston, Niagara Falls, North Tonawanda all excellent fishing spots that have earned respected reputations. The glamour fish the one that attracts the most attention from the angling fraternity is the Chinook or King salmon. According to the New York States Department of Environmental Conservation, the fishing for salmon was the best its ever been in the 27 year history of the lake creel census! Yes, its that good, with fish regularly topping the 30-pound mark. For derby-winning fish, Niagara USA is the best place to be along the Lake Ontario shoreline. Bring your own boat or hire a charter captain they have the access and the professional fleet to meet your every need. If you're land bound, there is great shore fishing in the Niagara Gorge; Burt Dam and 18 Mile Creek; the
piers at Wilson and Olcott; the NYPA Fishing Platform in Devils Hole; the Erie Canal; and a long list of other tributaries. Pick up a copy of the Greater Niagara Hot Spot Fishing Map to help plan your adventure. A weekly fishing report is currently recorded at 1-877-FALLS-US and is also on the website at www.niagara-usa.com. Niagara USA is also an excellent area for birding, recognized internationally as an Important Bird Area. A Niagara River Greenway Corridor is currently being developed from Buffalo to Youngstown. Add in biking, hiking, boating and all the paddle sports to satisfy your outdoor needs. The Erie Canal is a blossoming recreational waterway that's underrated by many. While it's most noted for boating and its historic value, fishing can be very good for warm water fish species like pike, bass, carp and panfish. It's also a great venue to paddle a canoe or kayak from North Tonawanda to Middleport, and all points in between or beyond. You can even ride a bike or take a hike along the towpath.
29th Annual Skip Hartman Memorial Lake Ontario Pro-Am Salmon Team Tournament
June 1-2, 2013 This prestigious fishing competition pits teams of anglers against one another using a unique scoring system over two days of fishing. Last year, more than $60,000 was paid out in cash and prizes. For more info call (877) FALLS US or log onto the tournament website at www.lakeontarioproam.net for rules and sign up information.
37th Annual Greater Niagara Fall Classic Derby 2012: A Fish Odyssey
August 17-25, 2013 The journey continues with another great event set for 2013. Last year, over $10,000 in cash and prizes were handed out to winning anglers at the Town of Newfane for the derby that moved up by a full month. Specie categories included salmon, rainbow brown trout, lake trout, smallmouth bass, carp and walleye. All have a chance to win the Grand Prize. Fishes of Niagara
Chinook Salmon | chinook salmon | Also known as the King, it is one of the most sought-after trophies in the Great Lakes. They can be caught from April to September in Lake Ontario; September through November in places like the Niagara River and 18 Mile Creek. Spring and summer salmon fishing can be outstanding off the Niagara County shoreline, especially on the Niagara Bar in the spring. Many fish are in the 20-30 pound range. Coho Salmon | coho salmon | This cousin to the Chinook normally doesnt get as big as the king, but the world record does come from Lake Ontario at over 33 pounds. These fish can be caught in the spring and summer by trollers or off the piers in Wilson and Olcott in the spring by casting spoons. Fall runs will occur in the Niagara River and 18 Mile Creek, but not as significant as the Chinook run. Average size is 3 to 6 pounds.
Lake Trout | lake trout | Once an indigenous species to Lake Ontario, these fish are part of a Federal restoration effort. The season runs from Jan. 1 through Sept. 30, protecting these fish in the fall when they migrate into the Niagara River. They can be caught legally in the river system from January through May; in Lake Ontario from April through September. In 2011, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service documented the first successful spawning of these fish in the Niagara River. Average size is 8 to 10 pounds, but they can top 30 pounds.
Rainbow/Steelhead Trout | rainbow trout | The rainbow/steelhead trout can be caught throughout the year in Niagara USA waters. In the winter months, the Niagara River is outstanding from December through May. They can also be caught in 18 Mile Creek and other Lake Ontario tributaries such as 12 Mile Creek when the waters are flowing. In the lake, fish can be caught from April through October, but the most popular time is in July and August on thermal bars over deep water. Average size is 5 to 8 pounds, but the state record of 31 pounds, three ounces comes from Olcott.
Brown Trout | broun trout | Brown trout can also be caught all year long in Niagara USA waters. In Eighteenmile Creek at Burt Dam, this small tributary is recognized as the top brown trout water along Lake Ontario based on the states creel census. Fish are available from October through April, with the most numbers being in the fall. The Niagara River also has good numbers of brown trout during that same timeframe. In the lake, browns are available from April through October. Average size is 4 to 6 pounds, but the state record is over 33 pounds. These are trophy brown trout waters!
Carp | carp | Carp are quickly gaining recognition as a prized catch in Niagara USA waters. They can be found in the Niagara River (both above and below Niagara Falls), the Erie Canal and in most shallow bays/streams off Lake Ontario. Fish in the 20 to 40 pound class are caught regularly in the Great Lakes waters, however there is not as much pressure for these fish as you will see for other species. Hyde Park Lake in Niagara Falls is also a good spot to bring the kids for these fun fish.
Muskellunge | muskellunge | The mighty muskellunge can be found in the waters of the Niagara River, both above and below Niagara Falls. The season for these fish is from the third Saturday in June until November 30 in the upper river; through December 15 in the lower river. Catch and release is how most musky hunters treat their quarry, hoping that these fish will continue to grow and fight another day. Fish in the 40 pound class are caught every year.
Smallmouth Bass | smallmouth bass | Smallmouth bass fishing is very good in and around Niagara USA. The Niagara River and Lake Ontario offer up some very good fishing from June through November when the main season is open. There is catch-and-release fishing available from December through June, but these fish are tough to catch when the waters are super cold. Average size bass is 2 to 3 pounds, but trophy fish in the four to six pound class are common with the occasion seven-plus pound fish caught every year. Nearby Lake Erie has a worldwide reputation as one of the top smallmouth bass destinations on the planet. Largemouth bass options also exist in the Upper Niagara River and the harbors off Lake Ontario such as in Wilson and Olcott, as well as in the Erie Canal.
To learn more about the areas outstanding fishing resources, request a copy of the Greater Niagara Hot Spot Fishing Map. Its FREE! Lists of charter captains, bait and tackle shops, launch ramps and much, much more. To order call 1-877-FALLSUS or visit us at www.niagara-usa.com.
