Marcia and Richard Smith of Laura vacationed in the western United States in May of this year. One of the biggest
highlights of their 31-day trip was a visit to the Grand Canyon. The couple left Sedona, Arizona, in an eight-
passenger aircraft, flew over the canyon, and landed on the west side in the Indian reservation. From there, they
took a helicopter down into the canyon and then travelled by boat down the Colorado River. The Smiths are our
latest Take Us Along prize winner and theyll receive a prize in the mail soon.

Shuff Adult Day Center Offers
Daytime Activities, Care to Participants
The Shuff Adult Day Center, located on the campus of Brethren Retirement Community,
offers daytime activities, care, and services to enhance and maintain the independence of
all participants. The center provides assistance with activities of daily living, medication
management, emotional support and a social outlet as well as some much needed respite
for their caregivers.
And while the Adult Day Center provides care in a safe environment for its members,
the daily laughter and numerous activities prove to be equally as important. Our dedicated
staff thoughtfully plans each and every day and works to uncover new interests and redis-
cover old interests. It is a place to be engaged, in conversation, in activity, in a community.
It is a place where participants regain the sense of belonging and self-esteem that comes
with being a part of a community.

an on-going need for the following supplies to help us continue our ministry of caring for
our clients.
The Shuff Adult Day Center members thoroughly enjoy many activities and have created
a wish list of supplies that would be enjoyable to them. They would enjoy the following
items: colored pencils, small bingo prizes, Sorry and Parcheesi games, bobby pins, styro-
foam balls, clear Christmas ornaments, felt, scrap fabric, glue, beads, safety pins, foam craft
kits, wooden shapes to paint, craft paint, small terra cotta pots, paint by number kits, small

Its harvest time again. Of course, har-
vest season may not mean that much to
you if you dont work in agriculture.
Nonetheless, you can learn a lot from
those who do especially in your role
as an investor.
Here are a few of these lessons to con-
sider:
Feed your portFo-
lio - Through the proper combination
of fertilizers and irrigation, farmers
seek to maximize the growth of their
crops. And if you want to give your
portfolio the opportunity to grow, you
need to feed it with the right mix of
investments. This generally means
youll need to own a reasonable per-
centage of growth-oriented vehicles,
such as stocks and stock-based securities. Keep in mind, though, that
the value of these types of investments will fluctuate, sometimes
sharply and theres no guarantee you wont lose some or all of your
principal.
Be patient - Crops dont grow overnight. Farmers know
that they will put in countless hours of work before they see the fruits
of their labors. And they know that, along the way, they will likely ex-
perience setbacks caused by a variety of issues: too much rain, too little
rain, insect infestations the list goes on and on. When you invest,
you shouldnt expect to get rich quick and you can expect to ex-
perience obstacles in the form of bear markets, economic downturns,
changes in legislation and so forth. Continuing to invest for the long
term and focusing more on long-term results than short-term success
can help you as you work toward your objectives.
respond to your investment climate -
Farmers cant control the weather, but they can respond to it. So, for
example, when its been dry for a long time, they can boost their irri-
gation. As an investor, you cant control the economic climate, but
you can make adjustments. To illustrate: If all signs point to rising long-
term interest rates, which typically have a negative effect on long-term
bond prices, you may need to consider reducing your exposure, at least
for a while, to these bonds.
diversiFy - Farmers face a variety of risks, including bad
weather and fluctuating prices. They can help combat both threats
through diversification. For instance, they can plant some crops that
are more drought-resistant than others, so they wont face complete
ruin when the rains dont fall. As an investor, you should also diversify;
if you only owned one type of financial asset, and that asset class took
a big hit, you could sustain large losses. But spreading your dollars
among an array of investments such as stocks, bonds, cash and other
vehicles may help reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio.
(Be aware, though, that diversification by itself cant guarantee a profit
or protect against loss.)
Relatively few of us toil in the fields to make our living. But by un-
derstanding the challenges of those who farm the land, we can learn
some techniques that may help us to nurture our investments.

Dont Miss Gods Blessings
Its one of those weeks.
My deadline for this weeks column is rapidly approaching, and I still have nothing
on my computer screen. Immediately, I search one of my tickler files and find the
following life story:
A young man was getting ready to graduate college. For many months, he had
admired a beautiful sports car in a dealers showroom, and knowing his father
could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted.
As graduation day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had
purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him
into his private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son,
and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautifully wrapped gift
box.
Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a
lovely leather-bound Bible. Angrily, he raised his voice at his father and said, With
all your money you give me a Bible? And then he stormed out of the house, leaving
the Holy Book.
Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a
beautiful home and wonderful family, but realized his father was very old, and
thought perhaps he should go to him. He had not seen him since that graduation day.
Before he could make arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father
had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come
home immediately and take care of business. When he arrived at his fathers house,
sudden sadness and regret filled his heart.
He began to search his fathers important papers and saw the new Bible, just as he
had left it years ago. With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. As
he read those words, a car key dropped from an envelope taped behind the Bible.
It had a tag with the dealers name, the same dealer who had the sports car he had
desired. On the tag was the date of his graduation, and the words . . . Paid In Full.
This weeks bottom line: How many times do we miss Gods blessings because they
are not packaged as we expected?
Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is when a relationship
dies between two people while they are still alive.
