Shenzhen Swimming And Diving Center

CASESTUDY Recreation
Situated in the very heart of Shenzhen city, the Shenzhen Swimming & Diving Center is currently the biggest swimming complex in China. The client, Shenzhen Sports Development Centre, has commissioned Cox Richardson/Ove Arup Group to construct an aquatic sports complex to serve both elite athletes and the Shenzhen community. Built for the purpose of the 11th Guangdong Province Games being held in the city of Shenzhen in 2002, the center also aims to serve the future Asian Games and other major sporting events. With an overall investment of RMB 500 million, this mammoth project was completed in 2001. Cox Richardson/Ove Arup Group was selected in December 1999 from an international field of architects following a design competition for swimming and diving halls - crystallizing into the post modern design of the Shenzhen Swimming & Diving Center we see today.

This project is the first of its type to use a radical cable-suspended structure whereby the roof system, including the structural steel and 18,315m 2 Kalzip Roof System, is suspended through a series of pre-stressed cables. The challenging design requires the entire structure to be flexible - a major challenge for a metal roof system. However, owing to Kalzip's proven design flexibility, the roof system performed flawlessly after being lifted and installed.
