1.

PURPOSE: The temperature of the poured concrete will be monitored by the use of thermocouple wires with electronic temperature loggers.

2. REFERENCE STANDARDS: Equipment Operating Manual 3. OBJECTIVES: Thermocouples are embedded in the concrete at the time of pouring. As the concrete temperature changes, so the resistance of the thermocouple wires will change which in turn varies the amount of current flowing back to a calibrated readout unit/data logger. This output is converted to an apparent temperature, which is noted directly from the readout unit/ data logger. No readout until is required for electronic temperature loggers as these are self contained and powered and records date time and temperature information. 4. APPARATUS : 3.1 Thermocouple Wires: The thermocouple wire comprise a 2mm diameter mineral insulated thermocouple wire. This is kept sheathed with the exception of the exposed ends which are placed at the required monitoring locations. 3.2 Electronic Temperature Loggers: The electronic temperature logger is a self contained and powered sensor with the following capabilities. Digital Thermometer in 0.5C increments with an accuracy of 1.0C. Real-time clock with accuracy of +/- 2 minutes per month Operable range of -40 to 85C Temperature data storage of 2048 readings. (approx three weeks at 15 min intervals before data is overwritten) Fully programmable log intervals

5. TEST PROCEDURE: In order to capture peak temperatures and differential temperatures, thermocouples will be installed at locations as agreed with the client. Usually this involves installation of columns of thermocouples at several different locations within the mass concrete pour. A column of minimum three or five no. thermocouples would be installed at each location. Surface temperature may also be recorded if requested The wires are tied to the reinforcing cage to prevent dames during pouring and are then extended to tan accessible external location for connection to the calibrated readout unit/data logger The sensors are tied to the reinforcing cage to prevent damage during pouring and are then extended to an accessible external location for connection to laptop for downloading.

The temperatures will be recorded at the following time intervals: 07 60 minute interval (other interval available on request) Monitoring can be extended at the client's request. Note: Ambient temperatures will also be recorded at each interval. 6. DOCUMENTATION: The results will be recorded at the site and transferred to a database at AFBT laboratories. A tabular and graphical report in a factual format will then be presented giving peak temperatures and relevant temperature differentials. In addition, update reports will be supplied only once on a daily basis on agreed time with the client and these are supplied electronically in the form of a Microsoft excel spreadsheet or printed off on-site using clients printer. 7. PROCESS RESPONSIBILITIES: The Engineer is responsible for installation and conducting the test for the accurate recording of results The lab Manager is responsible for correct interpretation and evaluation of results.
