Make More Protable Packaging Decisions Using

Total Package Analysis Methods

Structural Economic Strategic
This is a test
If you dont know the answers to these questions, you are probably leaving money on the table that would otherwise ow to your bottom line. 1. Is there a lower total cost package structure for my product? 2. What is the effect of consolidating or deconsolidating manufacturing facilities on packaging cost? 3. Should I injection mold or thermoform? 4. Is there a package size or size range that provides a particular economic advantage in total package cost? 5. Is the benet of package manufacturing scale economy more or less than the cost of additional freight to aggregate the volume to create the scale? 6. What is a global package strategy and what might I save by pursuing a global package? 7. Would sourcing be cheaper in the U.S., Mexico, or China? 8. What is the total CO2 footprint of my package, or of my package and its manufacturing system?

If You Dont Have the Answers, SES Can Help

Many organizations dont have the time or resources to answer these questions. If thats your situation, using our integrated technical and economic modeling and analysis capabilities, working with your staff, SES routinely answers these kinds of questions and more. Most managers think about how valuable a broad, deep structural analyses might be, but the work is rarely done because the number of variables requires developing and collecting large quantities of data for which there is little in-house capability. When analyses are conducted, much of the data usually comes from current package suppliers. Suppliers have many other things to do and typically are at least reluctant to respond. Some suppliers simply refuse to provide price estimates on significant multiples of a product design that may require them to consider alternate manufacturing processes.

Thousands of Permutations Not a Problem

SES has conducted analyses with variable sets that require over 8000 permutations to consider all of the combinations. This can involve calculating dozens or even hundreds of component unit prices, as well as determining the basic shape, weight, and strength proles of a wide range of package structures to determine pallet ts and storage congurations so that effects on warehousing, and incoming and outgoing freight can also be considered. We have this down to a science and can quickly and cost-effectively provide solutions.

Confidentiality Assured
SES maintains absolute security of what might be highly sensitive questions, since your current supply structure doesnt need to be involved or even know youre considering new options. Often, the asking of strategic questions is inhibited since they can be awkward to ask of existing suppliers with nancial interests in the outcome. How reliable is the answer from an injection molder to whether the product they make for you today should be blow molded or thermoformed? Where some external supplier input may be needed, SES circumspectly maintains client anonymity.

Sustainability and Your Carbon Footprint

The rapidly emerging interest in sustainability has added another layer of complexity to package design. To meet this need SES has added sustainability questions, CO2 emissions, and the Wal-Mart scorecard to the list of questions we can consider. SES has learned from experience that in package downsizing or product concentration, there can be diminishing returns to CO2 reduction with regard to cost. What are the answers to these questions for your package?
