Historic season At Skylight Box Office nets surplus

Skylight Music Theatre has announced a surplus for the recently completed fiscal year. "The 2012-2013 season exceeded all expectations, particularly at the box office, and resulted in a small operating surplus," reported Skylight Managing Director, Amy Jensen. "We are pleased to report that we increased revenues by 14% over the prior year while holding our expenses to a nominal 2% increase." Record breaking ticket sales provided the driving force behind the season's success. Ticket sales, which exceeded expectations by 31%, topped $1.5 millionthe highest in Skylight's 54-year history. One key factor contributing to Skylight's success at the box office was the roll out of a new strategic plan in June 2012 which included new initiatives to increase group sales and expand Skylight's audience. In addition, exceptionally high critical acclaim and wordof-mouth for productions throughout the season contributed to an unprecedented number of sold out performances. Skylight's production of The Sound of Music accounted for the greatest number of capacity performances and became the company's highest grossing production ever. The 2012-2013 season was a transition year for the Skylight. It was the ninth and final year for outgoing artistic director, Bill Theisen. Mr. Theisen is currently the Director of Opera at the University of Iowa. In September 2012, Skylight announced his successor, Viswa Subbaraman, former artistic director and founder of Opera Vista in Houston. Mr. Subbaraman joined Skylight in June 2013 and recently received critical acclaim for his Bollywood version of Beethoven's Fidelio which opened Skylight's 2013-2014 season and was Subbaraman's first production with the company. Skylight Music Theatre held its annual meeting on Sept. 26, at which it announced the above information as well as it's newly elected officers to the board of directors; John Flanagan (President), Michael Bula (Secretary), Michael Lueder (Treasurer). Safety for the fall

By Sam Erickson A dependable car is easy to forget about. If you drive every day, it can be easy to stop thinking about the car as a complex mechanical device and to think of it more like a television-a tool you use when you need it. With winter weather approaching, it's really time to start thinking about safety and preparing for the change in the seasons. There are a lot of moving parts to check on a car, but, without good tires, the safety of a car might be seriously compromised. There are just a few simple steps to take to ensure you've got quality tires for the inclement weather approaching. First, check the tire pressure. A monthly check is best, but when it's cold outside, you'll want to check the pressure more often. Fill your tires to the recommended level, which should be visible on the tire or on the inside of the driver's door, the next time you are at the gas station. Keeping tires at their recommended pressure keeps them working at maximal efficiency and improves gas mileage. Many people have heard of tire rotation but don't actually know what it is. Most experts recommend that tires should be rotated every 5,000 to 8,000 miles. This rotation is important because it evens out the wear on your tires. Based on your driving habits, where you drive, what the roads are like and many other factors, some tires can wear more than others. Tire rotation will ensure that the tires wear evenly and you won't have to replace one before the others. All you will have to do is move the wheels from one position on the car to another to keep them in good shape. Tread is probably your next step. Visually inspect your tires and the tread. If you can see the bars that run across the tires, it is definitely time to have the tires replaced. Snow or winter tires are a great option for those that have significant snowfall to deal with every year. An old trick is to check the tires with a penny. If you insert the head of the Abraham Lincoln picture and part of it is hidden by the groove, you are on the safe side. If you can see his entire head, it's time to replace those tires. Finally, you'll want to listen to your car at highway speeds for any irregular noises, grinding or bumping sounds. If you do sense something, have it checked out by a professional. Your tires are your first line of defense against inclement weather and road conditions in the winter. They should be checked regularly to ensure you get the maximum life from them and they are giving you maximum contact with the road. Dealing with tires isn't a glamorous part of car care maintenance, but keeping your tires in good shape will save you money in the long run and ensure your safety.

By Sam Erickson October is Fall Car Care Month. With the imminent onset of winter, it's time to give your car a full system review. This handy checklist can let you know what you should do in order to get the most out of your car. If you've only got a short amount of time, follow these in order to maximize your efforts. While some people feel comfortable handling this inspection and any repairs themselves, other less-knowledgeable car owners rely on their mechanics to inspect and replace these. The Engine: If your car runs rough on the road or when idling, it's best to have it checked out by a mechanic. Winter is a time when you are relying more on your car, so it's worth the investment. Tires:Check the tires for their tread life and any worn or bald spots. Rotating tires regularly can prevent uneven wearing and increase the life of every tire on your car. Checking for the right tire pressure is important to do every month, but it is even more important as you move into winter. Battery: Increased battery problems in the winter are actually often the result of the summer heat and extended driving. Corroded battery posts or a bulging case can indicate problems. Professional tools are needed to test the juice in your battery. Wipers: Your wipers are your key to visibility, and they are easy to replace and relatively inexpensive. You can visually inspect your wipers for pits and cracks or you can check them as they work. If they have good contact and clear water cleanly, you probably won't need to replace them for the winter. Fluid Levels: Your car contains several different fluids: power steering, brake, oil and windshield wiper, to name a few. Check the levels in your owner's manual and make sure to top off these before the season. It won't take long and it won't be expensive. If you notice any very low levels, it might be time to have a professional check for leaks. Belts and Hoses: Belts and hoses appear in many places in a car. Check for cracks in belts and soft spots in hoses, which often appear near the clams. Air Filter: The best thing about an air filter is that it is easy to change. Air filters keep your car operating at peak efficiency and give you the highest fuel efficiency. As

By Sam Erickson With all of the things to keep track of-the battery life on your phone, the kids' schedules, plans for the weekend-it can be difficult to cram in all of the necessities, like taking good care of your car in the fall season. There are a lot of things to take care of in your car, but a handy mnemonic to help you remember is the four Bsblades, battery, brakes and belts. Blades: Wiper blades are your first defense against accidents because they help you to see clearly and make smart decisions. Blades can get cracked or warped over time and their housing cases can become unbalanced, leading to poor visibility. Compound that poor visibility with dangerous driving conditions like snow or ice, and you could have a real problem. Wiper blades are easy to replace and relatively inexpensive. You can pick up a cheap set at almost any store if your current wipers aren't cleaning up to your standards. Battery: Heat in summer can actually reduce your battery life. A visual inspection will show you if your cables have corroded or if there is a problem with contact on the battery posts. Cleaning these is something that can and should be done by a professional. Emergency in the car? No problem

By Sam Erickson Winter is the time when most car care emergencies happen. In the warm days of spring and summer, few people are concerned about the occasional roadside problem. With always-on communication and the proliferation of roadside assistance programs, many people take it for granted that they will be able to call for help at a moment's notice, regardless of the conditions. Mother Nature, however, has a way of humbling even the most prepared driver. In winter weather, the stakes are much higher in case of emergencies, particularly in northern parts of the United States. If your area has inclement weather, be prepared to meet any challenges by equipping your car with an emergency preparedness kit. The most important things in a car emergency are the same things that are important every other day: food and water. Water is really the most critical element. Most people don't have loads of extra space in their car, but water can be stored in small drink boxes or pouches in the trunk. Water is also useful for sanitation or for taking care of an overheated car. Food can be a problem because cars are often exposed to severe temperatures, which makes food storage difficult. Calorie-dense items, which are not perishable, are your best bet. These could include dried fruits, nuts and energy bars designed for hiking or camping. Food and water can provide an important psychological boost as well. Many experts have argued that people who survive stressful situations are not necessarily the best prepared. The people who overcome these obstacles are the ones who believe they can. While they certainly provide physical comfort, food and water can go a long way toward providing that psychological comfort as well. Once you've taken care of these essentials, you can look to a few more important items. Staying dry and warm will help you preserve energy, so blankets and a poncho or raincoat are the next most important things to get into your kit. A solid multi-tool gives you flexibility without adding too much weight or the need for extra space, and a first aid kit is essential to take care of any small injuries that might occur. If you have kids, consider providing some toys to occupy their time while you wait for help. Commercial kits are available at big-box stores, hardware stores and many stores specializing in auto parts. These are often more expensive than building a kit yourself, but they are convenient and can be used as a starting point for your kit. Only you can decide what the best option is to make sure that you don't get stuck without assistance. Being prepared in case of an emergency will give you the tools-physical and psychological-to get through the ordeal.

Brakes: Good brakes are essential to the safe operation of your car, particularly on bad roads. If your brake pedal has a little extra give or goes all the way down to the floor, it is definitely time to have your brakes looked at by a professional. Halloween is approaching and parents need to keep safety in mind, according to experts. Its important for parents to be aware of the possible dangers involved with selecting costumes, carving pumpkins, and trick-or-treating, so accidents can be avoided and everyone can enjoy the holiday, said Beverly Anderson, Executive Director of Ebenezer Child Care Centers with locations in Milwaukee, Mequon, Greenfield, Oak Creek and Wauwatosa. The following are tips for a safe and fun Halloween. Selecting costumes: * Choose flame retardant costumes, and ones that allow your children to see clearly and walk freely without restraint. * If children are trick-or-treating, parents should consider purchasing costumes that are brightly colored. * Be mindful of the weather. While princess and fairy costumes are always a preference for little girls, they arent very practical for Wisconsins weather, said Anderson. Carving pumpkins: * Never allow children to carve jacko-lanterns without supervision and assistance. * Instead of using knives, purchase pumpkin carving tools that are less dangerous and available at most convenience stores. * Never allow children to light their jack-o-lanterns, and always make sure that they are set in places that are not near flammables or little hands. Trick-or-Treating: * Never allow children to trick-or-treat alone. * Make sure they stay on sidewalks and in driveways, and that they only visit homes where the lights are on. Its also a good idea to carry flashlights. * Inspect all candy for tampering and any items that are unwrapped, prior to allowing children to eat them. * For children under 5, remove all candy that could pose a choking hazard. New Catholic Schools Walk to celebrate success set for Nov. 2

A new two-mile walkSoles for Catholic Educationwill be held in on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Mount Mary University in Milwaukee. The event will begin at 10 a.m. The walk is being held to celebrate the success of Catholic schools in southeastern Wisconsin while raising money to support tuition assistance at each school, said Archbishop Jerome Listecki, who will be present at the walk in his red high-tops. "This walk was created to raise visibility for the archdiocese's 110 Catholic schools while celebrating the many benefits of a Catholic education, including academic rigor, Christ-centered faith formation and, overall, a holistic approach to education which includes mind, body and spirit, Listecki said.
