Police seeking charges against suspect in Jackson incident

A 24-year-old Waukesha man who was shot by police during an attempted armed robbery at the Culvers in Jackson Oct. 6 is facing several possible charges in connection with the incident. According to a joint statement issued by the Village of Jackson Police, West Bend Police Department and Washington County Sheriffs Department, police responded to a report of an attempted armed robbery at the restaurant, W227 N16880 Tillie Lake Court, at approximately 8:20 a.m. A manager and an employee were opening the restaurant when they heard a noise outside. As the manager opened the rear door he was confronted by the suspect, who was wearing a mask and armed with a shotgun. The manager grabbed the gun and attempted to disarm the suspect. The suspect lost control of the gun during the struggle and responded by pulling out a knife and stabbing the manager in the head. The manager and the suspect continued to fight for control of the shotgun and the knife until a Jackson police officer and two Washington County Sheriffs deputies arrived. As law enforcement officers arrived, the suspect gained control of the gun and pointed it at officers, who responded by firing shots at the suspect. The suspect and the manager were transported to St. Joseph Hospital for treatment, and the suspect was later transported via Flight for Life to Froedtert Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. Police will be recommending to the Washington County District Attorney that charges of attempted armed robbery, reckless injury, recklessly endangering safety, felon in possession of a firearm and violation of probation be filed against the suspect. The suspect has previous convictions for fleeing an officer, resisting an officer, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct. The manager was later released from St. Josephs Hospital.

Ways to Make a Difference this Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Unfortunately, too many of us know someone - a family member, friend or colleague - who is affected by breast cancer. In fact, breast cancer accounts for nearly one in three cancers diagnosed in U.S. women, according to the American Cancer Society. Since there is no cure for breast cancer, much more needs to be done in the fight against this life-threatening disease. There are several easy ways you can make a difference this October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and beyond: towards breast cancer research and awareness programs, such as one of the grants that Nestl Pure Life is helping to fund, aimed at findings drugs to prevent breast cancer in those with the BRCA-mutation. To join Nestl Pure Life in supporting BCRF and make a direct donation supporting research efforts, visit www.bcrfcure.org. Another easy -- and fun -- way to show your support and raise funds year round is by participating in walks and runs. Gather a group of friends and family and find a local walk or race that raises funds for an organization tied to research or finding a cure. Its a meaningful way to get directly involved.

Get the Word Out

Awareness is crucial to early diagnosis and timely treatment. Talk to your sisters, mothers, daughters, aunts and friends about scheduling annual checkups and diagnostic tests. Since genetics can play a factor, sharing your medical history with your family is especially important. Use free web services, such as the governments Family Health Portrait tool, available at www.familyhistory.hhs.gov, to collect this information and help your health care provider formulate a prevention plan.

Healthy Lifestyle
BCRF-funded research has indicated that there is a positive relationship between exercise, a healthy lifestyle, and breast cancer risk. Among other things, it is important to maintain a healthy body weight through exercise and a well-balanced diet. One weight maintenance trick is to stay hydrated and eat plenty of fiber-rich foods like almonds, beans and apples, which make you feel full and can help you avoid overeating. This Breast Cancer Awareness month, there are many great ways to support causes that fight this all-toocommon, life-threatening disease. Find out more by visiting www.cancer.org.

Show Your Support

Beyond spreading the word, there are easy ways you can support the fight against breast cancer from your grocery store list to fundraisers and more. First, look for your favorite brands that are giving back to the cause. For example, Nestl Pure Life Purified Water is supporting The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) through its Pink Pack program. Every package of Nestl Pure Life Purified Water marked with a pink ribbon represents a donation to BCRF, with a minimum of $750,000 this year. BCRF is dedicated to breast cancer research that will ultimately help lead to prevention and a cure. Currently, 91 cents of every dollar spent by BCRF is directed

Fall car care checklist

By Sam Erickson October is Fall Car Care Month. With the imminent onset of winter, it's time to give your car a full system review. This handy checklist can let you know what you should do in order to get the most out of your car. If you've only got a short amount of time, follow these in order to maximize your efforts. Brakes_Heat and increased travel during summer can wear out the rotors, shoes, pads, drums and calipers on your brakes. These are complicated systems. While some people feel comfortable handling this inspection and any repairs themselves, other less-knowledgeable car owners rely on their mechanics to inspect and replace these. The Engine_If your car runs rough on the road or when idling, it's best to have it checked out by a mechanic. Winter is a time when you are relying more on your car, so it's worth the investment. Tires:Check the tires for their tread life and any worn or bald spots. Rotating tires regularly can prevent uneven wearing and increase the life of every tire on your car. Checking for the right tire pressure is important to do every month, but it is even more important as you move into winter. Battery_Increased battery problems in the winter are actually often the result of the summer heat and extended driving. Corroded battery posts or a bulging case can indicate problems. Professional tools are needed to test the juice in your battery. Wipers: Your wipers are your key to visibility, and they are easy to replace and relatively inexpensive. You can visually inspect your wipers for pits and cracks or you can check them as they work. If they have good contact and clear water cleanly, you probably won't need to replace them for the winter. Fluid Levels: Your car contains several different fluids: power steering, brake, oil and windshield wiper, to name a few. Check the levels in your owner's manual and make sure to top off these before the season. It won't take long and it won't be expensive. If you notice any very low levels, it might be time to have a professional check for leaks. Belts and Hoses: Belts and hoses appear in many places in a car. Check for cracks in belts and soft spots in hoses, which often appear near the clams. Air Filter: The best thing about an air filter is that it is easy to change. Air filters keep your car operating at peak efficiency and give you the highest fuel efficiency. As cars idle more in winter, this becomes increasingly important. Lights: Check the alignment on your headlights to make sure you aren't binding other drivers and all of your taillights and signals are in good working order. This will make communication easier while on the road and may keep you from getting pulled over and receiving a ticket. Few things are more important than good car care maintenance. Take the time to inspect, check and fix any problems with your vehicle to ensure you have a safe winter driving season.

Safety for the fall

By Sam Erickson A dependable car is easy to forget about. If you drive every day, it can be easy to stop thinking about the car as a complex mechanical device and to think of it more like a television-a tool you use when you need it. With winter weather approaching, it's really time to start thinking about safety and preparing for the change in the seasons. There are a lot of moving parts to check on a car, but, without good tires, the safety of a car might be seriously compromised. There are just a few simple steps to take to ensure you've got quality tires for the inclement weather approaching. First, check the tire pressure. A monthly check is best, but when it's cold outside, you'll want to check the pressure more often. Fill your tires to the recommended level, which should be visible on the tire or on the inside of the driver's door, the next time you are at the gas station. Keeping tires at their recommended pressure keeps them working at maximal efficiency and improves gas mileage. Many people have heard of tire rotation but don't actually know what it is. Most experts recommend that tires should be rotated every 5,000 to 8,000 miles. This rotation is important because it evens out the wear on your tires. Based on your driving habits, where you drive, what the roads

Driving safely with the four Bs

By Sam Erickson With all of the things to keep track of-the battery life on your phone, the kids' schedules, plans for the weekend-it can be difficult to cram in all of the necessities, like taking good care of your car in the fall season. There are a lot of things to take care of in your car, but a handy mnemonic to help you remember is the four Bs-blades, battery, brakes and belts. Blades_Wiper blades are your first defense against accidents because they help you to see clearly and make smart decisions. Blades can get cracked or warped over time and their housing cases can become unbalanced, leading to poor visibility. Compound that poor visibility with dangerous driving conditions like snow or ice, and you could have a real problem. Wiper blades are easy to replace and relatively inexpensive. You can pick up a cheap set at almost any store if your current wipers aren't cleaning up to your standards. Battery_Heat in summer can actually reduce your battery life. A visual inspection will show you if your cables have corroded or if there is a problem with contact on the battery posts. Cleaning these is something that can and should be done by a professional. A professional mechanic can also check the battery power and recommend whether you should have the battery replaced. The last thing you want is to be stuck somewhere in the middle of bad weather with a dead battery. Brakes_Good brakes are essential to the safe operation of your car, particularly on bad roads. If your brake pedal has a little extra give or goes all the way down to the floor, it is definitely time to have your brakes looked at by a professional. Sound is often your best indication of how your brakes are doing. If there is noise when you apply the brake, like metal on metal, there might be too much wear on the disks. If there is a grinding noise, you might have worn out the rotors or disks. Your best option is to have your car towed to the shop to prevent any possibility of an accident if your brakes are that worn down. Have your brakes checked regularly by an expert to avoid these problems. Belts (and hoses)_There are several different belts and hoses in your engine. When the engine is cool, squeeze the hose to check for soft or mushy spots, which often occur around the clamps. You can also look for cracks, bulges or contamination of any sort with your eyes and with your hands. If hoses are damaged, replacement should take place immediately. A busted hose or belt will leave you stranded on the side of the road. If you have any questions, have your car inspected by an expert. The simple fact is that in inclement weather you rely more on your car than you do in the summer, and the stakes are higher if there is a failure. There are a lot of things that can be checked in preparation for the winter, but the simplicity of the Four Bs makes it a really useful way to approach fall car care.

...Safety for the fall

From page 7
are like and many other factors, some tires can wear more than others. Tire rotation will ensure that the tires wear evenly and you won't have to replace one before the others. All you will have to do is move the wheels from one position on the car to another to keep them in good shape. Tread is probably your next step. Visually inspect your tires and the tread. If you can see the bars that run across the tires, it is definitely time to have the tires replaced. Snow or winter tires are a great option for those that have significant snowfall to deal with every year. An old trick is to check the tires with a penny. If you insert the head of the Abraham Lincoln picture and part of it is hidden by the groove, you are on the safe side. If you can see his entire head, it's time to replace those tires. Finally, you'll want to listen to your car at highway speeds for any irregular noises, grinding or bumping sounds. If you do sense something, have it checked out by a professional. Your tires are your first line of defense against inclement weather and road conditions in the winter. They should be checked regularly to ensure you get the maximum life from them and they are giving you maximum contact with the road. Dealing with tires isn't a glamorous part of car care maintenance, but keeping your tires in good shape will save you money in the long run and ensure your safety.

Gutter cleaning tips

By Sam Erickson Its not a job that anyone looks forward to, but its one of the most important things you can do in the fall for your home. Cleaning the gutters can take a little while, but if they arent cleaned, water can build up next to your home and cause rot on wooden surfaces, pull off the gutters from the weight or allow ice dams to build up, potentially ruining your roof. While theres no simple way to clean gutters, a few tips can make the job easier and ensure your safety. Youll need a few supplies to get started. There are all kinds of tools that you can use these days, including attachments to a shop vacuum, extension poles or even robots, but the simplest, most efficient way to do it is still by hand. Youll want to wear work gloves when cleaning gutters to protect your hands from sticks and other sharp objects and animal waste. Ladder safety is of paramount importance when cleaning gutters, and the best way to keep a ladder stable while working on it is to have someone hold it at the bottom. Because youll need to be up at the height of the gutters, youll want to have a stand-off for your ladder,
Family owned since 1990

Free Estimates Fully Insured e 24 Hour Servic

keeping it from damaging your gutters in the process. If you dont have a ladder yourself, then it might be time to invest in one. Better yet, see if you can borrow a neighbors. Of course, theyll be more willing to lend you their tools if you offer to help them with their own work. That way, you can trade time for money and get to know your neighbor in the process. Scoop the debris out. You can do that with your hands or a trowel. Tie a trash bag or compost bucket to your ladder to hold the refuse. Once you have the majority of the material out, take a garden hose, set it to the highest pressure

you can and wash down the gutters towards the downspout. You might then have to auger out the downspouts to keep them from backing up. If you havent done it yet and live in an area of heavy debris, consider installing leaf guards at the top of your downspouts to prevent debris from entering. If you have large, mature trees around your home, you might have to clean more than once each season. If youre unable to do the job yourself, look into having a neighbor or professional handyman do the work for you. A small amount of effort keeping those gutters clean can save you significant money in the long run.
