The Trimtab3x3 is a collaborative project in sustainable transportation between Stress Engineering Services engineers and designers and The

University of Cincinnati, College of DAAP. True to the philosohpy of slow design, the design of this human/electric hybrid vehicle considers many varied elements of a vehicles impactfrom aerodynamic ef ciency to the way it empowers the user and affects the community.

DESIGN IS NOT ART H

ow do you dene beauty in product design? If its simply looking good, you can go to any design rm to buy a hot sketch or some sleek styling. But what if your product has to function as well as it looks? What if you have deadlines to meet and cant afford to design around a concept that cant be made? Will you trust your product to a stylist, or will you seek out a rm that can produce more than pretty pictures? Introducing The Innovation Group @ Stress Engineering Services (SES)a design rm built on an engineering core. At SES, we believe that a beautiful product is more than hot stylingits a fusion of form, function and emotionand we have the tools to make that possible.

THE INNOVATION GROUP @ SES

Every project manager has experienced the frustration of receiving beautifully illustrated design concepts with no reference to the real world parameters of the project (including manufacturability, material constraints, structural performance, weight and cost). Massaging these styling concepts into a functional product is often a mediocre compromise of design intent, cost, schedule and other product requirements. At the Innovation Group, we fuse the creativity and vision of Industrial Design to the technical expertise of a world class engineering services rm. We believe there is no such thing as a beautiful product that doesnt work. We understand that a products beauty is derived from the elegant interaction of all its attributesvisceral, behavioral and reectiverather than mere aesthetics alone. This promise of beauty in product design can only be fullled by a holistic approach that fuses the aesthetic, behavioral and reective aspects of an object. The traditional one-dimensional, styling-based approach is ill-equipped to deliver on that promise. By building our practice on a foundation of engineering, The Innovation Group has the technical backing to get our clients to a realistic and manufacturable solution faster, more elegantly and with less waste. By anticipating and celebrating technical constraints early on (rather than applying a crude patch later) our concepts offer a better, more holistic fusion of form, function and emotion.

STRESS ENGINEERING SERVICES

Stress Engineering Services (SES) has provided technical package and product development services since 1972 and is a leader in the design and development of innovative, optimized products for the consumer products, packaging, industrial and medical markets. SES has expert staff in mechanical and electrical engineering, uid mechanics, failure & predictive analysis, reliability engineering, cost modeling & economics, biomechanical engineering, and ergonomics. SESs Cincinnati ofce is also ISO 13485 certied for the design and development of medical devices and packaging. By combining Industrial Design with these areas of expertise, SES has enhanced its capabilities in the areas of human factors engineering, usability testing, data acquisition, human and device instrumentation, interface design, design-for-accessibility and design-for-sustainability. SES is able to create design concepts informed by a real world understanding of the technical constraints of any problem. This unique coupling eliminates the costly rework, blown schedules and poor results of the traditional guess and check design process, providing considerable cost and time savings to our clients and a more engaging, reliable and satisfying product for the end user.
