09A Pathways to Computer Science

Posted by Roberto Fernandez Tue Nov 6 12:03:23 2012. Message: I always believed that there was more to a computer scientist than sitting behind a desk all day typing some code into the computer. This video, however, showed people in drastically diverse fields which depicted a much better versatility for what is learned in computer science than what I previously thought. With computer science being applied to so many different fields such as neurobotics, biology, and firefighting, this video portrays how useful computer science can be due to how it teaches creative problem solving among other things. The individuals in this video seemed to be primarily motivated by their desire to help those either less fortunate (such as poor schoolchildren and blind students) or help others in other forms such as through advancements in firefighting and the security of the firemen. Computer science seems to have greatly helped all this individuals greatly, such as in analyzing proteins or in observing data on how specific limbs produce different movements in neurobotics. I am interested in pursuing a career in the medical field or in the physical sciences and both of these fields are being affected greatly by computer science as can be seen with how computer science allows scientists to examine and analyze how proteins contribute to the cell and their specific functions. If I were to pursue a field in chemistry or biology, computer science could be used in order to analyze the many organelles in cells or the chemical makeup and reactions of different compounds which can lead to scientific discoveries which would be impossible without the aid of computer science.

Message: I agree that the use of computer science will probably grow exponentially in the future and that these people were attracted to computer science because of the challenge that lies within it. I do, however, believe that what Picasso meant was that although computers can give us answers, we must analyze these answers and conclude what they mean on our own so I think you are right in saying Picasso was wrong but I believe that he was speaking metaphorically about how we must analyze the answers that computers give us.

Message: I agree that many computer scientists are not what the stereotype might say since I know various people who are computer scientists and they are very social and collaborate in groups to complete their work. I think that I would give up my tablet as well because I only use it for entertainment and it wouldn't hurt to do something other than being glued to a screen.
