Humans are part of and may affect or are affected by these systems. d) Earth systems can be understood by applying the basic principles of the physical and life sciences. Grading Policy: In this course there will be four (4) scheduled examinations, a field trip, and several written exercises. Each exam will be worth 50 pts. The first three exams will cover material since the last exam. The final exam will be comprehensive. You will be allowed to drop your lowest score, including the final! I do allow make-ups for illnesses, emergencies, etc. The university requires a written excuse from a doctor, police, etc for a chance to make up the exam. Exams will be objective. ParScore form F-1712-PAR-L (pink) will be used for the answer sheet. You will need one per exam. Be on time for the exam. If you are late, over 10 minutes, I may not let you take the exam and that will have to be your drop. The field trip will be on Saturday, 8 Nov starting at 0900 hrs. The field trip will take the place of a class date, so it is REQUIRED that you attend. You know about it now, so dont make plans that will conflict. Besides, all will have a good time! We will talk about it more as the time gets nearer. The written exercises will require you to write several short in-class essays. Some will be a surprise, I will also warn you of others. You are expected to be in class each day, therefore there are no make-ups.

CSU Fullerton Geology 101 Physical Geology Lecture Fall 2008 Your final grade in the course will be based on your combined scores: three exams (75%), the field trip (15%) and the written exercise (10%). Letter grades will fall (roughly) as seen below. Your final point total will be compared with others in the class to look for natural breaks in the sequence but you will not be graded on a curve relative to other student's score. Thus, it is to your advantage to study together and help one another learn. If everyone gets above 94%, everyone will get an A. Do your best and I'll take care of the rest! Grade Assignments: 100 - 94% = A 93 - 90% = A89 - 87% = B+ 86 - 84% = B 83 - 80% = B79 - 77% = C+ 76 - 74% = C 73 - 70% = C69 - 67% = D+ 66 - 64% = D 63 - 60% = D59 - 0% = F

Tracking Grades: I will be using Blackboard to inform you of your tatus s in the class. I will also post announcements, cancelled office hours, and other information as it comes up. You will want to check the site several times a week. How to do well in this course: 1) Show up to class. You are expected to attend each class period. 2) Bring a copy of the Keynote/PowerPoint outline to class for note taking. You will find the lectures on the class Blackboard site in the Course Document area. 3) Come to class prepared. By all means read the text assignment before class. This will help you centralize on the topic we will cover and put you more "in tune" to what will be covered that day. 4) Commit TIME to your study. You will want to put in at least 2 hours of study for every hour of class. It's true! By going over the material, (alone or with others) you will reinforce what you have learned. And by all means don't do it all in one sitting. Make notes when you study/review. 5) Review you lecture notes as soon after class as possible. 6) Ask questions. I try to make sur e everyone understands a concept during lecture before we move on. I also want you to pay attention in class. I get very frustrated when I have answered a question and then someone who was talking asked me to repeat an answer. 7) Cell phones and pagers must be turned off during class.

If you need to drop this course with a refund, you must drop this course within the first two weeks of class. If you need to drop after that time, the reason must be very compelling. You will need written conformation from a doctor, employer, etc. for you to drop after this period. Academic Integrity: Students who violate university standards of academic integrity are subject to disciplinary sanctions, including failure in the course and suspension from the university. Since dishonesty in any form harms the individual, other students and the university, policies on academic integrity are strictly enforced.
