Hamilton, Ontario: Since 1993 I have been
writing, researching and investigating the
paranormal, talking about things that go bump
in the night in schools to senior centers, hosting
a talk show, consulting on radio and TV shows,
and when it come s to UFOs, I still wonder why
there is no physical evidence that these elusive
galaxies.
Could the answer be the most logical?
They simply do not exist.
Let’s take a look at the alleged Roswell
UFO crash of 1947.
If in fact a UFO from another planet did
indeed crash in the farmlands of New Mexico,
does one really believe that after the adrenaline
rush theta went through that community that all
would have gone quiet until Stanton Friedman
started stirring the pot wuth his research and
subsequent book exposing the alleged cover-
up?
I think not.
Did something crash in Roswell? I
believe something did.
Was this crashed object an unidentified
flying object as suggested by the majority of
die-hard ufologists? Yes - because even to this
date what it was still has not been identified,
even though there is a hypothesis that the crash
site wreckage was actually that of a high
altitude balloon with radar reflector array.
Now, let’s come to the present date -
March 2009.
With all the digital cameras that are all
over the world, how come no one has taken that
all conclusive photograph that has yet to be
flashed all over television sets and on the front
pages of newspaper around the world?
Then there are those who believe that
the governments of the world are suppressing
the fact that extraterrestrials are visiting and
have been visiting this planet for some time
now. You know, the government conspiracy
believers.
These are the people who claim that the
governments are keeping the truth of the ET
existence a secret from “we the people” for a
reason that the conspiracy theorists have yet to
disclose - they themselves keep their own
conspiracy going.
I believe that even if President Obama
was to hold a press conference in Washington
tomorrow, and he disclosed with all sincerity
that the government did not have any proof of
Extraterrestrial activity, the conspiracy theorists
would not believe him and call the disclosure
nothing but a conspiracy.
But let’s take a close look at who is
benefiting from the alleged government
conspiracy... the UFO community.
As long as there is a government
conspiracy or cover-up of the alleged existence
of UFOs, flying saucers or little green (or grey)
men, the UFO community does not have to
produce any evidence of the UFO / ET
existence. Why?

It is very simple.
As long as there is the alleged
government conspiracy in place, UFOlogists do
not have to produce any physical evidence
because, as they are so quick to point out, the
government is behind the conspiracy and have
put a “shroud” of secrecy in place to squash all
evidence pertaining to the existence of UFOs
and Extraterrestrials.
UFOlogist demand that the government
release the information pertaining to the UFO
phenomena!
Believers claim that there has been a
number of products and inventions, including
the transistor, which are the result of reversed
engineering from the alleged “craft” that have
crashed of which they (the government and
scientists) have recovered.
Well then, please Mr. Ufologist, answer
this question for me please.
If in fact, the governments of the world
have the proof that extraterrestrials do exist and
that they are in possession of crashed crafts and
have reversed engineered present day
“wonders” thanks to the ETC, why, please tell
me why, so much money, time and effort is
being put into the search for extraterrestrial life
in space?
Why was so much money spent on
putting a probe on Mars?
Why are more missions to the Moon
being planned by NASA?
Why have we not used our ET contacts
to find alternative energy.... oh wait... that’s
right, the ETC cannot interfere with our planet
because of their prime directive of non0-
interference.
And people actually buy this crap!
Give me a break.
There is one aspect of UFology that
believers within the UFO community - the
money being made by those who maintain the
fact that the conspiracy does exist... the authors,
the producers, the speakers. the t-shirt makers,
the model makers, the “UFO Museums”, the
promoters, the publishers, the distributors, the
marketers, the printers, the event organizers, not
to mention the food and beverage and
accommodation establishments that make
money off of UFO events.
Then there is Roswell, New Mexico.
What would they be without “Roswell
UFO Crash Day” and the alleged UFO Crash
that puts all that money into the hands and
coffers of the City Fathers?
Just another small town in New Mexico.
If there are people out there with solid
evidence to support the fact that UFOs from
other planets, galaxies or dimensions really do
exist, then please, let me know! I want to
believe but it’s the old mushroom story:
“Everyone keeps me in the dark and
feeds me nothing but sh*t.”
When contact day happens like in
Independence Day, or when a UFO lands on
Parliament Hill in Ottawa or on the White
House lawn, I will then believe. Until then,
color me a realist! []

Over the years the 1947 Roswell
Incident has had it's share of critics, skeptics
and debunkers, and I've welcomed them in most
cases, hopeful that they could offer information
that might be beneficial to finally understanding
what actually happened near Roswell in 1947.
Too many times however the information they
present is not factual, and for several years I
tried to discuss their points of view with them
privately, hoping we could come to an
agreement on the information being discussed. I
have since then changed my approach and now
expose them publicly, as I've done in past
editorials about remarks made by Nancy Red
Star, Phil Klass, Karl Pflock, James Bond
Johnson, and others. The Roswell Incident is
hard enough to research without these type
individuals continually spreading their beliefs
without any verifiable information to support
their claims.
Several years ago Dave Thomas did a
presentation at the Aztec, NM symposium and
during the Q&A time after his presentation,
Stanton Friedman and I questioned many of the
comments he had made, pretty well destroying
his claims. Dave is a physics and mathematics
graduate of New Mexico Institute of Mining
and Technology, and a senior scientist at Quatro
Corporation in Albuquerque. He is vice
president and communications officer of New
Mexico for Science and Reason.
Based on his article entitled, Roswell
Crash of 1947 "A Realistic View", posted in the
January, 2009 edition of Rob McConnell's 'X'
Chronicle Newspaper, it is neither scientific,
reasonable or realistic. The article does not state
a date when Thomas wrote it, however if it's his
current view of the Roswell Incident, nothing
has changed since he did his presentation at
Aztec several years ago. This of course is
typical, since their agenda is to ridicule and
deny the facts presented over the years.
I will quote statements by Dave Thomas
in the above 'X' Chronicle article using his
initials (DT) to distinguish his remarks from my
rebuttal and comments.
(DT) "Roswell, a small town doing a big
business feeding the insatiable appetite of UFO
enthusiasts, now houses two UFO museums."
Roswell has not had two UFO
Museum's since 1998, when the one located
near the base closed after the 50th anniversary
of the Incident.
(DT) "Why the aliens were not taken to
a superior medical facility remains a mystery."
Is Thomas admitting there were aliens?
What knowledge does he have that they were
not taken to a superior medical facility such as
the Lovelace Clinic in Albuquerque, which had
a contract with the Army Air Force, or to White
Sands, Los Alamos, Bethesda, Walter Reed,
Wright Field, or any other location?
(DT) "William "Mac" Brazel, foreman
of the Foster ranch, along with a 7-year old girl,
Dee Proctor, found the most famous debris in
modern history."
I'm proposing a technicality here,
because I found Brazel's gravesite 10 years ago
and his nickname on the tombstone is spelled
"Mack", not "Mac".
I could stop right here because of the
next comment, but I believe it over emphasizes
the lack of doing good research by Dave
Thomas and others, that continue to distribute
information without doing the required
research. Dee Proctor was not a 7-year old girl,
but was the "7-year old SON" of Loretta and
Floyd Proctor, ranch neighbors to "Mack"
Brazel on the Foster ranch.
(DT) "Actually, it was pretty mundane
stuff, including a piece of reinforcing tape
whose flower-like design was taken to be alien
hieroglyphics"
The symbols on the tape were never
"taken" as hieroglyphics. Major Jesse Marcel
and his son Jesse Jr., both commented that "the
markings on the I-beams---not on the tape"
looked like some "form of hieroglyphics", that
being the best description they could come up
with as a comparison with anything we knew at
the time. I submitted the drawing Maj. Marcel
gave to Linda Corley, PhD, in an interview she
did with Major Marcel, May 5, 1981, prior to
his death, to the Great Pyramid of Giza
Research Association I belong to, and those
board members knowledgeable in hieroglyphics
informed me there is no resemblance to any
form of hieroglyphics. Jesse Marcel Jr. went
over this with C.B.Moore, and talks about it in
his book, "The Roswell Legacy", which
Thomas has probably not read.
(DT) "The National Enquirer also
brought Roswell to the forefront in 1980, with a
story featuring Jesse Marcel, the Army Major
who, in 1947 may have been responsible for a
press release."
Again obviously, Thomas did no
research. The fact is that Lt. Walter Haut, the
Public Relations Officer for the 509th Bomb
Wing at Roswell Army Airfield, under orders
from Base Commander, Col Blanchard, wrote
the press release, and distributed it to both radio
stations and both newspapers in Roswell, about
noon New Mexico time, July 8, 1947. The
article went out to most newspapers west of
Chicago, as a front-page headline, in those
afternoon or evening papers July 8th. It was not
Major Marcel who was responsible for the press
release. Walter Haut wrote and distributed it
locally to the media.
(DT) "Current conventional wisdom

among skeptics is that what was found on the
Brazel ranch was part of Project Mogul, a top
secret project testing giant, high-flying balloons
to detect Soviet nuclear explosions."
"Conventional wisdom?" It wasn't the
Brazel ranch---it was the Foster ranch where
Brazel was ranch foreman. The Soviets didn't
do any nuclear testing until 1949, (two years
after the Roswell Incident)?
(DT) On several occasions in Dave
Thomas' article he mentions Charles Moore,
one of the Project Mogul scientists, who
worked with NYU on Mogul projects, who
refers to the equipment used for the balloon
launches such as; radar reflectors, aluminum
rings, sonobuoys, batteries for the acoustic
equipment, radiosondes, and others.
Why did none of that equipment show
up in the photos taken in General Ramey's
office, and what is in the unopened packages by
the radiator behind General Ramey and Col.
DuBose in those photographs?
(DT) "Moore makes a strong case for
the hypothesis that NYU Flight # 4, which he
helped launch on June 4, 1947, was the source
of the debris Brazel found on the Foster ranch."
Flight 4 was cancelled due to weather
conditions, and Moore admits no altitude data
was obtained for it and it was not included in
the NYU reports.
(DT) "Brazel reported that he found the
debris on the ranch on June 14, 1947."
Brazel would have come into Roswell
on Sunday, July 6th bringing some debris to
Sheriff Wilcox's office, and the military would
have gotten involved with Marcel and Cavitt
going out to the ranch that evening. The
military would have had time to talk to Brazel
and have him prepare a statement, prior to
taking him to the base for an in-depth
interrogation. Brazel is quoted on the June 14th
date only in the Roswell Daily Record
newspaper for July 9, when General Ramey's
weather balloon story was the headline.
(DT) "Moore's calculated balloon path
is quite consistent with a landing at the Foster
ranch, approximately 85 miles northeast of the
Alamogordo launch site and 60 miles northwest
of Roswell."

information pertaining trajectory path errors
proposed by Charles Moore as well as
documentation about the various flight numbers
and paths of balloons launched from
Alamogordo, New Mexico, confirming that the
debris on the Foster ranch could not have come
from Flight #4.
If Dave Thomas and others insist on
discussing the Roswell Incident, they should at
least do the research required, or cease referring
to themselves as scientific, reasonable or
realistic.

DON'T SHOOT THE
MESSENGER

In 1995 the average Life Force (LF)
quantity for dogs, cats, horses and humans
produced a reading in the range of 95 to 99, on
a scale of 0 to 100. These LF evaluations are
presented in Units of Consciousness, which is a
vibratory measurement that is proprietary to
EMC² and is not recognized by the scientific or
medical communities. Nonetheless, there are
certain observable characteristics, which appear
to be parallel in both energetic and physical
evaluations. Those who are evaluated and found
to have a LF of zero (0) share one common
property: they have a profound economy of
movement, characterized by a lack of such
activities as inhaling, exhaling or blinking. They
are both energetically and physically, peacefully
at rest.
Conversely, a LF of 100 simply
indicates a relatively unobstructed flow of
energy. It does not indicate or suggest
perfection. I sincerely doubt that anyone at all
imperfect can measure or label, "perfection".
Our energetic evaluation measures a relative
"work-in process/progress". Obviously, those
who sought an energetic evaluation from me
(later, us) fell between the two extremes of 0
and 100.
Here's what happened:
In 1997 I observed an energetic event in
one person which, shortly, became a trend in
others, and before long, a ubiquitous paradigm
in almost everyone. Its effect on the average LF
of adult US humans was to cause it to plummet
to the upper 60's. Dogs, cats and horses
remained between 95 and 99. (This
phenomenon was written about at the time in
the novel, Sanctuary: The Path to
Consciousness. One may also read about it on
www .pathtoconsciousness.com under "The
Book" tab, titled "Epilogue II: Up To Date".)
By 2002 the LF of most US urban adults
had dropped to 1 on that same scale of 0 to 100,
and continued to drop. (Dogs, cats and horses
still measured at 95 to 99.) My calculations led
me to believe that the next, possibly final
plunge in LF would occur in the fall of 2008.
Unfortunately, those calculations have proved
to be correct. By October of 2008 many
potential participants in The AIM Program of
Energetic Balancing had a LF of .4, which is
obviously a 0 on a scale of 100. Consequently, I
was forced to change my measuring criteria to
the more subtle scale of 0 to 1000.
Here's the most important thing: The LF
decrease continues. As of 1/18/09, the average
US urban adult LF is .1, and still dropping.
Fortunately, most of these .1's still indicate the
energetic capacity to heal themselves. (It is
imperative to remember that the capacity to heal
and the capacity to be effectively treated are not
at all synonymous.)
My calculations indicate that most of
these .1 LF's will reach level ZERO in less than
one year, commencing in April 2009. Dogs, cats
and horses thus far remain at 95 to 99.

In closing, I urge you to consider this: I
am writing this because I am a messenger, much
in the same manner as is a weatherman. I am
neither Chicken Little nor Pollyanna. If you
wish to go sailing, you'd be well advised to
know if a storm is due. If you plan a picnic, it
would help to be informed about the possibility
of rain. Contrary to the opinion of some, the
weatherman does not create the weather. He
merely reports it. Furthermore, there is no room
and no justification for a spin, positively or
negatively. When it comes to information and
knowledge, hopefully, a truth may set you free.
On the other hand, a half-truth will most
certainty enslave you.

Tampa, Florida -- Meet Lisa Abney who
runs Haunted South Paranormal Research.
Abney says it involves going out an
examining claims that people have made about
paranormal phenomena occurring in their house
or business.
Lately Abney has been haunted by the
fact she paid more than $700 to attend a
paranormal conference at the Belleview
Biltmore, called Tapscon 2. The conference is
sponsored by Brent Fair who is the president of
Odyssey Star Productions, which runs events
from ghost hunting to bikini shoots. The
treasurer of Odyssey Star Productions says the
company had nothing to do with the Tapscon
event.
According to Abney, all the information
on the web site concerning the conference
disappeared. She says when she didn't get her
hotel confirmation she started getting nervous.
Abney says she tried to ask questions about
what was going on, but couldn't get in touch
with Fair.
Working with an internet web site called
Sci Fake; we discovered there are scores in the
same boat as Abney. We went to Fair's home to
try to find out what was happening, but he
wasn't home. He did call us to say he is offering
nothing but satisfaction to his customers.
Meantime the Belleview Biltmore tells
us Fair still owes thousands of dollars from last
year's conference. The hotel says when he didn't
put down a deposit for this year's event it
cancelled it.
However, Fair says it has just been
postponed, not cancelled. Those who bought
tickets say that it appears as if Fair and their
money have disappeared just like a ghost.
Abney says she is extremely mad. She
says the right thing for Fair to do is refund
people's money.
While he says that's exactly what he
intends to do, he couldn't give us a date when
Abney would get her money back. Fair says at a
certain given time, under certain guidelines he
will process out the refunds who would like
them.
But to use the paranormal vernacular, it
was spooky how often Fair kept changing his
refund story.
When we point blank asked him about
Lisa Abney his story changed again. Fair
reminded us he has not failed to produce an
event yet. But he has failed to produce a refund
and it might take a call to ghost busters or better
yet the sheriff's office to get the money. []

And Its Effects on Mother Earth

“The Return of Planet-X" is an educational, informational source examining all aspects of this
controversial subject including the record of X's Ancient Science of Prophecy, its Phantom

A Spirited Experiment:
The Science of Ghosts

SPOTTED and yellowed with age, the
photograph is a standard shot taken every year
by tourists clambering over the ramparts of
Edinburgh Castle. Sitting astride the black bulk
of a cannon, a mother and daughter smile for the
shot, squinting to keep the sun out of their eyes.
It's a familiar image, a version of which
must be tucked into thousands of photograph
albums, sealed in under cellophane next to shots
of Princes Street Gardens and Greyfriars Bobby.
But there's one striking feature thatmarks out
this holiday snap as something different and
altogether more interesting: a headless figure
inwhat appears to be a long military coat, faint
but distinct, captured in the right-hand side of
the shot.
In another photograph, a group of girls
are lined up to be snapped – one with her eyes
shut, as is ever the way. Standing in a living
room, they look like they might be about to head
out on the town. A toddler is crying in the
foreground. But much more eerie is the other
small child peeping from behind the legs of two
of the girls; the face pale, the eyes dark. But
there was no child there in the room when the
picture was taken.
These are just two images from a new
website, Hauntings: The Science of Ghosts, set
up by Professor Richard Wiseman, a
psychologist based at the University of
Hertfordshire. At the moment there is no
definitive explanation as to how these ghostly
figures have appeared, but that's something that
Wiseman and his team of experts hope to
explore.
"Ghosts have been around for many
hundreds if not thousands of years," Wiseman
says. "They've been with us for a long time and
understanding why that's the case – whether it's
because there's evidence (for their existence] or
because we have a need to believe in ghosts, and
obviously I tend towards the latter explanation –
it doesn't seem to be going away any time soon.
"It's a topic that most scientists steer
clear of but actually I think there's some
interesting science to be done there."
Wiseman, who has a reputation for
investigating fascinatingly oddball subjects –
luck, superstition, the psychology of humour –
is calling for people to submit photographs and
to take part in an online survey to share spooky
experiences, as a preamble to an event he will
be hosting during this year's Edinburgh
International Science Festival in April. As one
of a panel of seven experts – it also includes
Paul Kieve, an illusionist and magical
consultant on the Lord of the Rings trilogy and
two of the Harry Potter films and Dr Caroline
Watt from the Koestler Parapsychology Unit at
Edinburgh University – Wiseman hopes to
explore all aspects of ghosts from the science of
haunted locations to the history of spirit
photography to how the brain can be fooled into
seeing apparitions.
So what kind of photographs does he
expect to receive? "I hope we're going to
uncover some we've never seen before," he
says. "We're going to get some expert
photographers coming online to tell us what
they think. Part of the explanation will be straps
in front of the cameras, long exposures, dodgy
film, people seeing faces in ambiguous shapes
and so on. I suspect there's not going to be one
explanation which emerges but several."
Wiseman has been interested in the
psychology of the paranormal for 25 years. He
happily admits that he's sceptical, but he's no
"armchair sceptic".
"There's a case for engaging with the
evidence and that's what we're going to be doing
through the website and on the day as well," he
says. "But I don't pretend that there's some part
of me that believes in the afterlife because I
don't."
Wiseman's last major paranormal
experiment was in the Edinburgh Vaults back in
2001. In that experiment, Wiseman and his team
took people who had no knowledge of the
vaults' reputation as haunted into the space to
monitor their reactions. The results, he says,
surprised him.
"We had certain places that had a
reputation for being haunted and when we took
people into those places even when they didn't
know the history they had weird experiences.
That suggests there is something about that
location which is creating those ghostly
experiences, whether it's the size, or the look, or
the lighting levels. There's something there to
be explained.
"That surprised me because I thought it
was all in the mind, in that you just get some
people who are easily scared, who believe in the
paranormal and when you take them into a place
that's allegedly haunted they scare themselves
into having an experience. What we showed in
the Vaults investigation is actually that location
matters. There were some places that made
people a lot more scared and more likely to have
these experiences than others. That was a nice
surprise because it means there's more science
to be done."
In the UK, roughly a third of people say
that they believe in ghosts and as many as 10
per cent say that they've seen one. But in 100
years of parapsychology, no credible scientific
evidence exists to support the existence of
ghosts. However, that doesn't mean there's a
shortage of explanations for things that go bump
in the night. Some researchers believe that
disturbances in the electro-magnetic field of the
Earth creates the conditions in which we think
we see or feel ghostly presences; some think
that underground tremors or streams are
responsible for the spooky goings on in haunted
houses. There's even a suggestion that carbon
monoxide poisoning in small spaces has caused
the sensation of a ghostly presence.
For Wiseman, the psychological model,
which has evolutionary roots, is of interest.
"You become afraid, you become hypervigilant,
you detect something and then you become
even more afraid," he says. "When we're afraid
we suddenly become very good at monitoring
our environment and our own physiology. That
creaking door suddenly becomes important
when normally you wouldn't notice it. And once
that's happened it becomes a positive feedback
loop; you become even more scared, so then
even more hypervigilant.
"It could be that ghosts are a good idea
because if you're in an environment where there
is a predator, then you want to get out of there
quite quickly, so believing that there's a
presence there even when there's not may well
be hard-wired into the brain."
Evolution it may be, but location is
certainly important. Edinburgh is a city with a
surfeit of ghosts – the eerie closes; the haar that
rolls from the Forth to muffle sound and hide
things from view; the cobbled streets beneath
which lie vaults and passageways, cellars and
crypts. Wiseman reckons that Edinburgh has a
decent claim to be one of the haunted places in
Europe.
"I think it's partly because Edinburgh
has quite a bloody history, but it's more about
the architecture. Edinburgh matches the places
we see in scary films."
And that's another essential part of the
ghost experience: stories. From spooky stories
told around the campfire, to the myriad books,
plays and films that use spooks and spectres to
frighten and intrigue us, narrative is key to the
way we understand ghosts. Wiseman says that
already comments on the website suggest that
the figure in the Edinburgh Castle picture is the
headless drummer boy who supposedly walks
around the historic sight. People have suggested
that perhaps he's not happy about people
climbing on the cannon.
"Instantly there's a narrative," Wiseman
says. "We can't just look at the photograph and
think, 'Oh, it may be a double image'. We ask
why would a ghost appear and come up with an
answer. There's a real sense of drama. There are
very few explanations that suggest it's a really
dull ghost, not linked to anything and nothing
happens."
So who does Wiseman hope will come
along in April? "I hope we get a real mixed
audience with spiritualists, the people who've
experienced ghosts but don't know what to
make of it and the sceptics too, so that it
becomes a very healthy debate.
"What I hope we do is look at this
complicated topic from lots of different
perspectives. We've got the historians, the
photographer, the people who make ghosts on
film for a living as well as the psychologists.
The science message there is that that's what
science does, it looks at these things from lots
of different perspectives."

Southeastern Paranormal Investigations
- known as SEPI, an Ocala-based group that
offers ghost tours - has launched an online
petition urging the inn's mortgage holder to
extend the foreclosure deadline.
Meanwhile, a South Florida paranormal
investigator who worked on a ghost-hunting TV
special on the inn for Univision said he
registered "www.savethesevensistersinn.com"
and hopes to have the Internet site up by today
to echo the petition and, perhaps, raise money
for the effort.
"If we can get the extension on that, we
will go full blast to do some charity events -
whatever it takes," said George Mercado, who
contends the Seven Sisters is not only one of the
nicest and most hospitable inns he has
investigated - it is also one of the most haunted.
Currently, the owners of Seven Sisters
are seeking a buyer for the two-house Victorian
inn along Southeast Fort King Street. The two
restored, century-old homes are on the market
for about $1.3 million, and if an acceptable
contract is not presented by April 7, First Coast
Community Bank will sell the homes at a
foreclosure auction, according the inn's owners.
SEPI, whose ghost tours of historic
downtown homes stop at Seven Sisters Inn,
launched the online petition Saturday.
"Our mission is to try and extend or
delay the time period for which the bank will
foreclose on The Seven Sister's Inn Bed &
Breakfast," notes the petition started by Nancie
J. Andriola and other SEPI members.
Both homes, the petition notes, are on
the National Register of Historic Places.
The petition is addressed to Chip
Townsend, president and CEO of First Coast
Community Bank. Andriola said her goal is to
gather as many signatures as possible and
present the petition to Townsend, as well as the
Ocala City Council.
Per bank policy, Townsend has declined
to comment on the Seven Sisters Inn.
As of this writing, the online petition has
more than 200 names on it, with responders
leaving pleas to extend the foreclosure deadline
and praising owners Bonnie Morehardt and Ken
Oden, who have run the inn for 20 years.

Morehardt said Tuesday she and Oden
appreciate the calls of support - including one
from California - and the petition, especially if
it can smoke out a potential buyer who will keep
at least one of the buildings as an inn.
Seven Sisters fell into financial trouble,
Morehardt and Oden contend, following a failed
contract to buy the inn in which the buyers were
to assume the mortgage payments in January
2008. They did not make the payments, the
couple said, noting the buyers kept delaying the
closing dates and eventually lost contact.
Meanwhile, Morehardt and Oden said,
the bank came calling for the full amount owed
and, in October, started the foreclosure process.
The inn is still booking events, including
a murder-mystery dinner Saturday night. Also,
the inn is hosting another group of ghost hunters
from across the country during the first
weekend of April.
The group is scheduled to join TV
personalities from the Sci-Fi Channel on their
quest to track the inn's apparent haunts. It is yet
another spin-off from the Sci-Fi Channel's
initial visit in September to film an episode of
"Ghost Hunters" at the inn. That episode, in
turn, attracted the attention of ghost hunters
from across the country. Now, it seems,
enthusiasts who seek out the dead are working
to keep Seven Sisters alive.
"It's breathed a lot more life into the
inn," Oden said.[]

days of your life ... and going by some of the
school, college and university courses on offer
now, they definitely will be.
As well as maths, history, science,
languages and English, 21st-century education
allows you to study subjects such as beer,
gambling and David Beckham.
Angling is the latest subject designed to
encourage kids into learning, with a course in
the sport being offered to pupils across
Scotland.
The Angling For Youth Development
course has been successfully rolled out in
Strathclyde and Tayside, and will soon be
developed into a proper qualification.
But a diploma in fishing seems quite
sensible compared to some other courses on
offer across the UK.
From surfing to science fiction and Big
Macs to Ghostbusting, education institutions are
increasingly teaching unusual subjects in a bid
to attract students.
Some could lead to a future career.
Others are simply bizarre.
Here are a few examples:
SCIENCE FICTION
Aspiring Jedi Knights and Klingons can
head to the University of Liverpool if they want
to sort out their Gene Roddenberrys from their
Ray Bradburys.
The uni offers English literature
modules in science fiction, as well as a post-
graduate MA course in sci-fi studies, which lets
you read the best books and watch the top films
of the genre.
CSI
If you want to be like one of the CSI
coppers, or learn to be a superhero such as
Batman or one of the Watchmen, this could be
the course for you. The City and Islington
College in London runs a course in crime and
forensic science, in conjunction with the
Metropolitan Police.
It is being touted as training for would-
be scene of crime officers, the British equivalent
of CSI.
GHOSTBUSTERS
Investigating the paranormal has
become a hobby for increasing numbers of
people across the UK, with groups rushing to
check out tales of hauntings.
Coventry University offers a course in
Yvette Fielding Most Haunted-type ghost
hunting, officially known as the psychology of
exceptional human experience.
The course is an MSc post-grad and includes
elements of parapsychology.

than Ghostbusters in
our neighbourhood

CONTRARY to what many people
think, Dr Caroline Watt is no Ghostbuster. She
will not come round to your haunted single-end
and sook up a spook in a trap. She is a cool-
headed academic, a senior lecturer at Edinburgh
University. The confusion comes because she is
based in the Koestler Parapsychology Unit,
which since 1985 has been the leading place in
Britain for academic study of the paranormal.
The KPU is part of the psychology
department, a warren of wood-panelled
corridors. Watt, a slender, short-haired 46-year-
old, has worked here since 1986 and has an
office – "an eyrie" – on the top floor.
Her own views on what experts in the
field call psi, a term encompassing psychic
abilities such as mind-reading and causing
objects to levitate, are open-minded but
sceptical. She doesn't disbelieve in these things,
but has seen no evidence to convince her they
exist. Her interest lies more in exploring the
psychology of the paranormal – what makes
people think they are seeing spirits – and this is
the subject of her forthcoming talk at the
Edinburgh Science Festival, part of a day-long
event on April 4 called Hauntings: The Science
Of Ghosts.
Later this year the KPU will begin a
study concerning poltergeist activity. It is very
common for people to contact Watt, sometimes
in a state of some distress, to ask for help or
explanations of what they perceive as
paranormal experiences. "It happens all the
time. I can show you a letter I got this morning."
She opens a filing cabinet and pulls out some
typed sheets of paper. "This is someone who
wrote and sent me drawings reconstructing an
experience they had when they saw this
hovering orb outside their kitchen window."
People are often looking for validation,
someone who will believe and encourage them
in their beliefs. However, because of Watt's
respect for rigorous experimental conditions,
she is less credulous than most of the British
public, 30% of whom claim to have actually
seen an apparition. "But I try to be responsible
in how I respond to people," she says. "In some
cases you can tell they need clinical help. If
someone says 'I'm hearing voices and I'm being
persecuted' or 'The newsreader is controlling
my thoughts' then that sounds like paranoia, a
form of psychosis. We have a clinical
psychologist on the team and I refer cases like
that on to him. But you never know what's
going to come next when the phone rings."
Not long after this, the phone rings. A
high-pitched voice on the other end says: "I've
had a really weird experience!"
This is Professor Richard Wiseman,
calling as a wind-up. A KPU alumnus and
organiser of the forthcoming science festival
event, he's a media star, and even more sceptical
than his partner Watt.
If anything, the KPU goes too far in its
efforts to be seen as credible. They have a
policy, for instance, of not testing the psychic
abilities of anyone who rings up claiming to be
psychic. Watt would rather test for such abilities
within a large group of people who make no
special claims. "People who want to be proven
to be psychic have a vested interest, and that
leaves you open to potential cheating. They may
find a way around your experimental
protocols."
That makes sense, certainly, but if I
wanted to find a dog with fleas I'd start with the
mutt that was scratching.
Parapsychologists must be careful,
though, not to leave an open goal for those who
would portray them as cranks. Critics within the
psychological mainstream question
parapsychology's legitimacy, much as doctors
do with alternative medicine. In European
universities, however, the subject has an
increasing profile, and KPU staff are bullish in
their defence of their field.
"Why should it be dismissed as pseudo-
science?" asks Dr Peter Lamont, a former
magician, now a KPU lecturer whose shelves
are filled with binders marked "Tarot",
"Mesmerism" and "Victorian Spiritualism". He
also has a black labrador lying under his desk.
"It's experimental, it's quantitative, it tests
hypotheses. In what sense is that not scientific?"
He pauses. "Sorry," he says. "I think my
dog has farted."
As the unit that takes his name increases
in respectability, the late writer Arthur
Koestler's own reputation has become tarnished
– it is claimed that he raped and beat women. In
response, and in light of the fact that women's
groups threatened to deface it, his bronze bust
has been removed from public display and is
now in the library.
I ask Watt whether she feels
uncomfortable with it. "No," she replies. "I can
separate his biography from the
parapsychology. And he's paying my salary.
Whether or not you like some of his views, we
are benefiting academically from his bequest."
Koestler committed suicide in 1983,
together with his third wife Cynthia, and they
bequeathed their entire estate for the
establishment of a chair in parapsychology at a
British university. Apparently, his interest in the
subject began when, circa 1915, a can of beans
exploded inexplicably and knocked him
senseless.
Very few establishments bid for his
money. The potential damage to their credibility
was too great a risk. But Edinburgh University
was keen, so in 1985 the Koestler chair was
filled by Professor Robert Morris, who held the
position until his death in 2004. Since then, the
KPU has shrunk in size and doesn't have the
funding to take on the many students who want
to do a PhD there. There is massive public
interest in the subject area, fuelled in part by the
popularity of Most Haunted and other television
shows which purport to investigate the
paranormal.
"Oh, I can't bear watching those," Watt
shudders. "I got a phone call asking would I
take part in this programme called I'm Famous
And I'm Frightened. But I've only got so many
hours in the day, and I'm not going to spend
them sitting in a dark room waiting for ghosts."
Ghosts said to haunt

As paranormal investigator John Lewis
stood behind an auditorium stage on the
Slippery Rock University campus three weeks
ago, he recalls, he felt someone hit the back of
his knee.
He and three people there with him
reportedly heard a little girl's laughter, then
footsteps, as if someone was running away. But
there was no little girl.
Mwaaahahahaha! (That's a fright-filled,
maniacal laugh.)
It's official, folks. Miller Auditorium is
haunted. But the good news is, they're friendly
ghosts. "Almost everyone on our team had
personal experience," Lewis, owner of
Titusville, Pa.-based Baelfire Paranormal
Investigation, said Thursday at a news
conference in the theater lobby. "I pretty much
feel this place is haunted."
On Feb. 28, he and his 11-member crew
spent the night in the auditorium looking for
evidence of paranormal activity. Free of charge,
they set up infrared video cameras and had
digital and 35mm still cameras and digital,
analog and micro-cassette audio recorders.
Eleven hours of audio and video and 758
photographs later, they believe to be true what
professors and students at the college in
Slippery Rock, Pa., have suspected for years. In
addition to personal experiences, investigators
captured inexplicable digital images of a thick,
neon green mist in that same backstage area --
the scene shop -- and heard voices.
"I wish I could say we caught an
apparition," said Lewis, who hasn't yet analyzed
the video recorded that night. But they can't.
Just four distinct voices -- two males, a
little girl and an older woman.
"We heard what we feel is an adult
female voice saying, 'Enough!' " he said,
playing the audio file of a woman's voice clearly
saying the word. "We do believe that could be
Emma Guffey Miller."
Many believe Miller, a university trustee
who died in 1970, has haunted the auditorium
named after her for years. Investigators plan to
forward the voice audio file to Miller's
granddaughter for possible identification. "If
she can recognize the voice, that would give us
some hard scientific evidence that it's her,"
Lewis said.
They haven't identified the little girl, but
think one of the men could be a former student
who died tragically.
"We expected to come in here and
maybe get lucky and find Emma," Lewis said.
"To come up with four entities, that was a lot,
more than we expected."
For years, students and staff have
claimed to experience odd goings on in the
theater, including vanishing ghostly figures,
disappearing and reappearing costumes and
falling objects, especially in "Emma's Closet," a
cramped back room holding clothes Miller
donated to the school. "It's fantastic," said
Slippery Rock theater professor David Skeele,
who says that in the past he has heard footsteps
on the stage behind him only to turn around and
find no one there. "I didn't expect them to get so
much."[]

Property's strained
history behind some of
the hauntings at Ghost
Cottage

It looks like any other house as you
drive down Mateer Drive in the Hunter Creek
area, but owner Kelli Ryan says there's nothing
usual about her two-story home. She has owned
the property, 28315 Mateer Dr., for around three
years now.
Ryan, who says she has always had
psychic abilities since she can remember, didn't
intentionally purchase a haunted dwelling.
"I wouldn't have bought this place if I
had known," said Ryan. "Once things began
happening, I befriended the spirits to make sure
we could get along."
She now embraces her psychic abilities,
but it made for a troubling childhood.
"When I was only two to three years old,
I would say something was going to happen and
it would," stated Ryan. "When my parents
would be making plans for the following week,
I would tell them not to schedule anything for
that day, because so-and-so's funeral was that
day. That person hadn't passed away yet, and
they would pass away shortly after."
Ryan says that when someone was going
to pass away, she would see heat waves around
the person, similar to those rising off an
extremely hot roadway. These experiences
occurred until she was a teenager.
The house and property surrounding the
house has become a popular site for paranormal
researchers. Many of their experiences on the
property have even been uploaded as You Tube
videos.
"Many researchers say this is the most
active place they have visited," said Ryan.
Among some the evidence that
researchers commonly see and collect are
pictures and video white masses, shadows, orbs
and recordings of disembodied voices.
The property
Several ghosts inhabit the property and
house. The hills above her house is reportedly
home to Valkeryies, also sometimes referred to
as forest guardians or fairies, and have been
seen by many people as a traveling mist that
moves throughout the forest. Ryan even has a
collection of gifts from them. She says they give
her many sculptures and special rocks, many
contain heart-shaped rocks – which Ryan
believes it is a sign they like her. "I used to sing
Irish songs to them and nothing ever appeared,"
said Ryan. "Once I learned some Celtic songs,
they started leaving me stuff. I wanted one of
those rocks with a [cone-shaped] hole in it, after
watching ‘The Spiderwick Chronicles'. The
next day, there was one outside."
Bill Starkey
Another ghost that roams the property is
that of Bill Starkey, who once owned the house
above hers.
"One day, I was walking my dogs up
there and I suddenly got very overwhelmed. I
thought a cougar or something was about to
pounce on me," said Ryan. "Suddenly, I felt
something touch my shoulder and a voice tell
me, ‘Honey, it will be alright.'"
"I immediately thought, ‘I need to get
off this hill now,'" added Ryan. "I came back
later and asked him his name, and he just said
Starkey, which I mistook for Star Key. Later on
during a conversation with another person, I
learned that this was his last name only."
Bill Wells
The most active ghost in the house is a
former pharmacist named Bill Wells, who died
in a car wreck in 1978. He has been known to
bang pots in the kitchen and can be seen
walking around the house, especially near the
laundry room and hallway. He is one of the past
owners that haunt the property. "He treats the
house like it's his. We don't mind, though. He is
fine with us being here," said Ryan. "You can
really see him around 10:30 at night."
Lilly the witch
Prior to the home's construction,
purportedly there was a witch named Lilly that
lived in a trailer in the exact spot where the
house would later be built. According to local
lore, she suffered a mysterious death after
making someone's wife sick. "I don't really
take action against the nicer spirits; they are no
threat to anyone," said Ryan. "I do take action to
keep the mean ones, like Lilly, away."
Lilly's mean streak was a threat to the
Ryans. She would turn appliances on and off;
make them dizzy and sick; lock Kelli in the
bathroom; move objects and even assaulted
them. "We would go to Brookings and she
would turn on the stove or coffee pot," said
Ryan. "She was doing some extremely
dangerous things. She could have burned down
the house. She drew so much energy from us to
do these things, we would get sick." "Bill gets
along with most of the others, but he doesn't
want her in his house. He protects us from her.
She likes to hang out around the doors and
sneak in at night when we go outside," added
Ryan.
Dan Kuykendall
A previous owner of the house died after
crashing his plane into a mountain, and
reportedly walks the property. He rarely visits
the actual house itself, spending most of his
time outside. He even has an additional
connection to another person haunting the
house; Kuykendall married Wells' widow and
moved into the house after his death.
Jean Hawkins
Ryan was in need of a bed to finish one
of the bedrooms, so she traded her piano for one
she really liked. She knew the bed had once
belonged to Jean Hawkins, who had passed
away. What she didn't know was she was getting
more than a bed; apparently it was one of
Hawkins' most prized possessions. The
bedroom in which the bed is placed has become
known as the Rose Room. People who knew
Hawkins are amazed at how much it looks like
something Jean would have done.
Ryan stated that Hawkins likes to look at

the front windows of the house, something she
liked to do while living.
"You can see a black figure kind of lean
out of the kitchen area and look towards the
window," said Ryan.
The Myrtlewood grove
Ryan believes how the property was
created has something to do with all the
paranormal activity. "I have heard from people
that were around while the property was being
developed that a big grove of Myrtlewood trees
were destroyed, then a huge slice of hill was
taken out to flatten the property," stated Ryan. "I
know the forest guardians are not happy that
occurred. Those are sacred trees."
Water intensifying activity
There is a belief that water intensifies
paranormal activity, and Ryan thinks that
between the Pacific Ocean, the Rogue River and
other numerous waterways in and around Gold
Beach, we are more prone to have such activity.
"The Chinese never build their homes facing a
river; they believe that the river will carry more
spirits towards their home," said Ryan.
Educating the public
The Ghost Cottage is also home of the
Southern Oregon Paranormal Research
Association, which Ryan runs. She helps other
researchers by allowing them to use her home
and property as a learning environment. She
also teaches classes on improving people's
psychic and intuition abilities. "I believe
everyone is psychic; I just help them hone and
refine that ability," said Ryan. "A lot of them
say, ‘I don't want to be a fortune teller or
something.' It isn't about that; it is about using it
to enhance their everyday life."
Her other passion
It doesn't take long to see Ryan's other
passion in life – art. Paintings hang from the
wall as if you're in an art gallery. Antiques are
on every shelf, which both Ryan and her
husband Riley love to collect. She works as a
manuscript illuminator, textile restorer and
general art restorer, working on Medieval and
Renaissance pieces to modern works. She spent
around three years in Florence, Italy helping re-
pigment frescos at the Vatican, restoring the
images and making them pop once again. She
hopes the Oregon Coast will become a haven
for fresco painters.
"Gold Beach is a perfect place for
frescos, since a true fresco is painted while the
plaster is still wet; the cool and moist air is
perfect for having more time to finish," said
Ryan. "I have been illuminating since I was 12
years old. I love the idea of making transcripts
the same way monks did." Ryan also is very
interested in Pentimento, which is where
finished paintings are utilized by the painter as
a canvas for a new painting. The under image is
completely hidden by the new painting, but over
time the top layer gives way and a "ghost" of the
under image is visible. Black lights and x-rays
can be used to pull the under image out even
further. Art supplies were expensive; so many
painters utilized this technique to save money.
"In a way, this is a lot like a haunting.
You see what's on the surface; but with some
work you begin to see the history," said Ryan. []

OUR ANCIENT PAST,
Based on Science,
Myth, and ITC

Something momentous happened in our
world at several points in our ancient past that
forged the modern world and humanity.
Understanding these mega-events gives us a
clearer picture of our world and ourselves and
casts light on bright future scenarios that are
part of our destiny.
In 1996 I was part of an international
panel of scientists and researchers who were
receiving what seemed to be a series of
communications coming into our world from
other worlds directly through our telephones,
computers, TVs, radios, and other technical
devices, as part of a futuristic field of research
called instrumental transcommunication (ITC).
My colleagues in Luxembourg reported a
lengthy contact from seven highly advanced
beings through their telephone answering
device. The message said, in part:
"In the course of bygone decades, of
thousands of earthly years, beings interested in
human species meet to decide on the
continuation of The Project."
The Project
For several years I assumed the message
was referring to the project of high-tech, other-
worldly communications that were starting to
open up. That would have been astonishing
enough. I eventually came to realize, though,
that "The Project" revolves around humans and
traces to our very beginning on Earth.
I've spent more than a decade
developing what seems to be the real story
behind these contacts, and one of the most
compelling puzzles I had to solve was the
origin of man: when did humans first appear on
Earth? Scientific evidence, myth, frontier
research by the likes of Sitchin, von Daniken,
and Cremo, as well as ITC contacts received by
my colleagues and myself, provided a variety of
different possibilities. But when I shuffled them
together and carefully sorted through the
results, I was left with a scenario that really
boggled my mind. In fact, at first I didn't want
to believe it. I couldn't believe it. Here's what I
found….
The Human Origin
According to ITC contacts, there was
once a paradise world called Eden or Marduk,
which was inhabited by superhumans with
powerful technologies. After Edenites
colonized the Earth, the technologies on the
home planet got out of control and destroyed
their world, leaving the colonists on Earth as the
last living Edenites. They were marooned in
this world, which was not at all like their
paradise home planet. Here, life killed life to
survive, and the colonists had to contend with
some of nature's most dangerous creatures.
The ITC contacts told us very little about the
Edenites, where Eden was, and when it
exploded, so I resorted to science, religion, and
myth for answers.
Bible stories of the Garden of Eden and Greek
Mysteries about Dionysus-Zagreus offered
some clues, but science provided a huge piece
of the puzzle. Between Mars and Jupiter is a
large gap big enough for a planet, but instead of
a planet, there is an asteroid belt-a ring of rocks
and boulders encircling the sun. Most scientists
believe the asteroids are 4-billion-year-old
debris left over from the formation of the
universe, but others believe that a planet once
filling the orbit was destroyed, and the asteroids
are what's left.
In any case, keep in mind that the Edenites
(ancient humans) were on Earth before Eden
exploded.
When Did Eden Explode?
The hardest thing for me to accept was
the notion that humans were on Earth 4 billion
years ago, but that seems to be the case. There's
plenty of evidence of ancient humans (and you
can google these if you'd like):
Ed Conrad found what seem to be
fossilized human bones in coal 280,000,000
years old.
William Meister found a fossilized
sandal print 600,000,000 years old.
Michael Cremo writes of manmade
metal spheres 2.8 BILLION years old.
But the best evidence came from
science. NASA's lunar missions in the 1970s
collected rocks found near craters on the moon,
and scientists found the rocks to be 3.9 billion
years old, convincing them that our solar system
was victim of a maelstrom of impacts at that
time, forming craters on all the planets and
moons. Scientists today conclude that that's

when the universe was formed. I believe
otherwise; that's when Eden exploded, and so
humans were on Earth at that time.
Cross-Breeding
The superhuman colonists were god-
like compared to us today, and various ancient
cultures down through the ages called them
Annunaki, Nephilim, Kachinas, and other
names.
According to ITC contacts, at some
point the superhuman castaways cross-bred
with the primitive humans of Earth, resulting in
legends such as the Greek Titans and man's fall
from grace. The ancient cross-breeding also led
to modern humans.
The Noble Savage
As a result, we humans today have a
noble side that wants to love and trust everyone
and to be wise stewards of the planet...and we
have a savage side driven by fear, envy, and
resentment compelling us to lie, cheat steal,
murder-whatever it takes to survive in a hostile
environment.
The inner struggle between our noble
and savage natures boils over into our social
systems to create all sorts of dramas, from stock
markets and athletic comtests to world wars.
And that's why "in the course of bygone
decades, of thousands of earthly years, beings
interested in human species meet to decide on
the continuation of The Project."
We are The Project, and our fate
depends largely on how we can come to terms
with our savage side in the coming years. We
seem to be at a crucial point in human
evolution!

THE PROJECT
The Project, paints a mind boggling picture of
our ancient heritage - who we are as humans and how
we came to be - as well as the paradise destiny that
the author says is in store for us.
In fact, some of the hypotheses (for example,
that humans might have been on Earth more than a
billion years ago) might seem outrageous to scientists
and religious scholars, and probably to many readers
were it not for the fact that the author backs up his
claims not only with fossils, artifacts, and other
scientific evidence, and not only legends, myths and
Biblical passages, but also with information
purported to come from other realms of existence
through a new field of research called ITC
(instrumental transcommunication), the use of
technology to get in touch directly with the worlds of
spirit.
If Mark Macy is right in his claims, we’ll have
to reassess our notion of reality. If he’s wrong, well,
readers will have to digest his ideas, see if they
resonate, and then judge for themselves. In any case,
The Project will certainly test that unique roadmap of
reality that you’ve drawn in your mind over the
years!

Forget about love.
As the Dow has declined, so has
amorous interest among patrons of area
psychics. What has replaced it? A dogged focus
on cash.
"They want to know if they should take
their money out of the stock market or if they
should get out of a business or stay with a
business," said Rachel Johnson of the Psychic
Studio in Raleigh. "People are coming asking if
I can do a spell to help their finances."
Johnson says she can read the future in
the palm of a patron's hand or with the flip of a
tarot card.
She does not cast spells.
Such confusion about her abilities may
stem from another recent development -- a wave
of newcomers seeking out her services.
Business had been up for a few years but
hit a fever pitch late last year, said Johnson, who
has told fortunes for 18 years, following in the
footsteps of her mother. Their business includes
another mother-daughter psychic team in
Smithfield who are their relatives.
The stock market is a major point of
patron concern, though many also ask when
they'll find jobs. Romance has been the big
loser, she and other psychics said.
"People don't ask about their
relationships so much anymore," said Sophia
Todd, a fourth-generation psychic who has seen
a modest bump in business at her two Durham
locations.
She's seen a surprising increase in the
number of business owners who come to her
hoping to catch a glimpse of future profits -- or
losses -- for their enterprises. To help them, she
finds herself spending a lot of time reading the
money line on her clients' right index finger for
signs of future wealth.
Why no lottery numbers?
She doesn't boast much skill in
predicting the ebb and flow of financial markets
-- she says her psychic abilities apply to people,
not intangibles like the stock market. It's a
distinction that answers a common question
posed by critics of psychics: Why can't they
predict lottery numbers?
"If I could do those things," Todd said,
"I wouldn't have to work at all."
But quick fixes are a big lure for people
seeking a way out of financial distress, leading
some to seek out help from lesser lights.
Rosemary McArthur, the Colorado-
based founder of the American Association of
Psychics, said many of her members are
reporting an increased interest in their services.
But, she said, the hard times have also buoyed
the popularity of psychic hot lines that don't
compare in quality to the psychics who register
with her group.
"People are vulnerable, and they're
easily taken in by people who tell them what
they want to hear," said McArthur, whose
moniker is "The Celtic Lady."
McGill said some of her regular
customers have cut back on their readings as
finances get tight -- hourlong readings reduced
to half-hour ones. Some who started with
shorter sessions have dropped out entirely. But
the downturn has also brought in a steady flow
of new customers.
Patrons fear the future
She does the reading before they ask any
questions and often finds financial issues
troubling them.
"About once a day I am reading for
people who just lost their job or will be losing
their job shortly," said McGill, who noted the
trend started just before the November
elections. "They are very fearful of what the
future will bring for them."
The woes span the globe and cross class
lines.
"I read for very wealthy individuals who
have lost a lot of money in the stock market and
for people who have circled around their whole
lives waiting for their next paycheck," she said.
McGill said her callers rarely ask for
specific advice on money. McArthur gets more
detailed questions but said she tries to keep her
guidance general when it comes to a client's
economic choices. She's also doing her part to
boost consumer confidence by trying to free her
clients from the gloom of economic news.
"I always tell people don't buy into the
negativity," she said. "By thinking positive, you
draw abundance to you." []
Profits in predictions

Good news: We found another
profession that isn’t hurting despite the
recession. Psychics are apparently foreseeing a
profitable future for themselves.
In these times of economic uncertainty,
the business of giving advice with the help of
“special powers” is about as recession-proof as
the alcohol industry. Just as we wrote a few
weeks ago about beer companies heading for a
boom year, USA Today reports that psychics,
astrologers, palm readers and other “paranormal
specialists” are all the rage with consumers in
an uncertain economy.
One Philadelphia psychic said her
customers ranged from executives who wanted
to know about their companies’ outlooks to
restaurateurs who wanted to know what would
tempt people to eat out more to homeowners
who want to know if their property values are
secure.
This is one of those stories that you have
to wonder if it is a spoof, but apparently it’s on
the level.
Psychics even have their own marketing
experts, including Maryanne Fiedler, who
represents an online network of 165
clairvoyants. They only work via the Internet,
so at least they are technologically savvy. But
the partners in Psychic Source don’t give
investment advice, Fiedler is quick to point out.
They only offer “reassurances.”
These days, that may be enough. If you
can’t get comfort from your broker or your
banker, why not try Moira or Maxine?
(“Introductory” membership will get you a
reading for $1 per minute, but we couldn’t find
anywhere on the site that gave regular rates. The
space to insert a credit card number was clear as
a bell or, we might say, clear as “natural-born
clairvoyant” Betty’s forecast based on “tarot
readings, runes and her connection to spirit
guides.”)
Fiedler said the advice most are giving is
less what’s in the future than help in dealing
with the present. One woman, who claims to
have been a “seer since age 7,” when she
“foresaw an aunt’s death,” said she just tells
clients inquiring about the recession not to
panic. Everything gets worse before it gets
better.
And people are paying good money for
this? Whatever comforts you, we suppose.
There is some psychology behind the
rush to consult psychics, the newspaper reports.
“In times of uncertainty or stress, people tend to
rely on superstition or magic,” said a Baruch
College marketing professor.
One Dallas “soothsayer” does give
investment advice, relying on her “skills” to tell
clients which stocks to buy. There was nothing
in the story to indicate if she took her own
advice, but we assume that if she did, she
wouldn’t have a need to sell her services as a
soothsayer.
Most of what they peddle is just
common sense, sort of like playing “Jeopardy”
from your living room and basing responses on
the categories’ titles or the inflections in Alex
Trebek’s voice.
But another business we thought would
be recession-proof is experiencing declines.
The Wall Street Journal reported in
December that state lotteries are reporting
decreased ticket sales. Nationwide, lottery sales
fell $215 million from July through September
2008, after several years of steady increases.
But that trend could change again.
Surely if some of us are willing to consult
psychics to make investment decisions or even
to simply receive comfort about our financial
prospects, we wouldn’t hesitate to plunk down
part of the payroll on the chance to win big in
the lottery.
And these days, that could be easier to
envision than job security — except in the
psychic business or the brewery. []
Psychic Debate
The industry built around foretelling
people's futures has gotten a boost from the
slowing economy, some psychics report.
But the scientific community claims to
have refuted the idea that such paranormal
abilities exist.
Last January, researchers at Harvard
University published what they claimed to be
the "strongest evidence yet obtained against the
existence of paranormal mental phenomena."
The researchers used functional
magnetic resonance imaging to detect changes
to the brain caused by paranormal activity.
They found none.

place?

The arrival of consultants at
Orangeville's 134- year-old town hall is
commonplace, but the consultants who visited
over the weekend were not normal. In fact, they
were paranormal.
The Meadowvale Spookies Paranormal
Research Team visited the building Saturday
night to investigate and discern the presence of
spiritual entities in the edifice, most of which
dates from 1875.
When the investigation ended, at about 2
a.m., the team determined that the town hall is a
highly spirited place.
"The place is definitely active,"
concluded researcher Carrie Pierce. "I would
say this has been one of my best investigations.
I felt there were a couple of people who walked
out of it who were a lot less skeptical than they
were when they walked in."
Ms. Pierce explained that the role of
research teams like the Meadowvale Spookies is
not only to confirm the presence of spirits at a
location, but also to prove that there aren't.
"You play both sides of the fence when
you do this type of work," she said. "The idea is
to first try and explain it logically."
The Meadowvale Spookies' claim that
the town hall is indeed haunted likely came as
no surprise to Stephen Nixon, who works as
assistant technical director of Theatre
Orangeville, which uses the secondfloor Opera
House.
Due to the nature of his job, Mr. Nixon
is often alone in the building at night. In an
interview, he recalled two paranormal
experiences.
One time, he said, he was locking up
after a performance when he saw a woman
walking up the stairs from the basement. He
called to her and said "sorry, but we're closed."
The woman didn't respond. Instead, she simply
disappeared.
On another occasion, when Mr. Nixon
was doing repairs in the dressing rooms, he
heard the sound of someone climbing a step
ladder that was positioned on the stage.
Concerned about health and safety
regulations, he ran to the stage to tear a strip off
the culprit, only to find there was nobody to be
seen.
In his profession, said Mr. Nixon, a
presence of the inexplicable is fairly common.
"I've been working in live theatre for 10 years,
and I find that most venues have this weird
feeling about them."
On Saturday night, a few people on hand
claimed to see a shadowy figure in the council
chambers.
For those with a penchant for the glib, it
could have been the ghost of a former councillor
doomed to purgatory after committing political
suicide.
But the team says it did record a number
of paranormal occurrences, including the
presence of orbs of light hovering over the
investigation's participants. []

What if your dream home was once the
scene of a gruesome murder?
One Minnesota couple faced that
dilemma firsthand when just days after moving
into their new home neighbors told them that
the previous owner had shot and killed his wife
there.
Spooked and angry that the agent who
sold them the house had not told them about the
crime, the couple is now suing the realty
company. They are seeking $100,000 for
emotional distress and what they see as the
decreased value of their home, according to
court documents obtained by ABC News.
While this couple may benefit from a
Minnesota law requiring brokers to tell buyers
about crimes that have occurred in a home, not
all buyers have that advantage, according to
several real estate experts.
Laws concerning stigmatized properties
-- the industry's term to describe homes that
have been the scene of a suicide, murder, an
AIDS-related death or even paranormal activity
-- vary from state to state.
Experts advise that homeowners who
would be opposed to living in a home that was
once the scene of a violent crime do thorough
research before making an offer on a property
and veer away from relying on brokers to
volunteer the information.
"What sellers and real estate agents have
to tell buyers depends on where you are," said
Ralph Holmen, the associate general counselor
for the National Association of Realtors. "The
general rule is that they must disclose material
adverse defects, such as a chronic leak or
damage to the siding of the house." "It's a
question as to whether [a murder at the home]
would be considered a material or adverse
defect to the property," said Holmen.
Karen Sonn, a New York-based real
estate lawyer at Sonn & Associates, said that
she has dealt with several clients who were
"completely freaked out" to learn that a deadly
crime or a suicide had occurred in the home
they wanted to buy.
"They were freaked out," said Sonn. "They were

having kids, and they said they just felt bad
karma."
"People have visceral reactions to this
stuff," she said.
Phil Immel, a licensed real estate broker
and self-professed real estate guru, told
ABCNews.com that there are several easy
things potential homeowners can do to protect
themselves from such a situation. “I knew a
couple who sold their house because they found
out after they moved that a suicide had occurred
there in the past," said Sonn.
"Definitely Google the address or the
city and look for it under crimes that have been
recorded by the Police Department or written
about in newspaper articles," suggested Immel.
"If you're really serious about a house, go walk
around the neighborhood and ask the neighbors
if there is anything interesting you should know
about the property."
Immel also suggested people do an
Internet search for the particular state's required
disclosure laws so that they know exactly what
is required of their broker and what can be
withheld from buyers by law.
In California, where Immel is based, the
law required brokers to inform buyers of crimes
that have occurred at homes within three years
of the purchase. The value of a stigmatized
home will decrease, according to Immel,
depending on the nature of the incident that
occurred there.
In high-profile cases, for example,
Immel recalls hundreds of thousands of dollars
being slashed from the asking price because of
a crime that occurred at the home.
After Nicole Brown and her friend Ron
Goldman were stabbed to death at Brown's
Brentwood, Calif., home in 1994, the property
sat on the market for more than two years
waiting for a buyer.
The home eventually sold for $200,000
less than what Brown had originally paid for it.
"If the murder was infamous, the
property value could certainly go down," said
the NAR's Helmon. "That creepy feeling will
have an adverse effect on the value of the
home."
Immel said that in the case of the San
Diego mansion where 39 members of the
Heaven's Gate cult killed themselves, the price
of the property declined as much as 50 percent
when it was resold.
"The price depends on the severity of
the stigmatization," said Immel. "Murder would
seem to be horrific and would garner a 50
percent reduction, whereas a landslide on the
property might be more toward 30 percent."
If the event that an elderly person died at
the home from natural causes, Immel said it's
unlikely to detract from the value of the home.
While homeowners may assume that
they would have heard about a murder that took
place at a specific home or in a neighborhood,
or may count on their broker to inform them of
one, Immel advises buyers to err on the side of
caution.
"Because these disclosure laws
regarding stigmatized homes vary from state to
state," said Phil Immel, a California real estate
broker. "Be a proactive consumer and ask lots of
questions.
"You don't want to live in a haunted house, do

the New Mexico Desert

In June 2007 I was invited to take part in
field trip into the New Mexico desert by an
American colleague by the name of Ed
Gehrman. Ed is a firm believer in the
authenticity of the Alien Autopsy film and he
was of the opinion that he had actually
discovered the location, the crash site if you
will, where the events took place. I have to say
here and now that I totally disagree with Ed on
the authenticity of the Alien Autopsy film but
that has been covered before by me and details
can be located on my web site at:

FIELD TRIP
We were joined on this field trip by Ed's
daughter Jody and her partner Dave. They,
along with Ed were making their own
independent documentary and were to film out
in the desert as well as at the UFO festival in
Roswell, which we were to head to later.
After meeting in Albuquerque we set off
to head for the location in the desert, which
probably lies closer to Socorro, that it does
Roswell. In fact it is the Nogal Canyon area. Ed
had been at this site several times so he knew
exactly where to go. What I can say about the
site is that it is well and truly off the beaten
track. I'm glad Ed had hired a 4 X 4, as at times
it was a tough place to drive to.
It was a very hot day in New Mexico
when we finally reached our destination in the
desert. I have to be honest, Ed had described
this place to me before and even sent me some
photographs and it was exactly as he had
described it. You reach a kind of canyon, which
has a dry lake or riverbed running through it. In
front is a rock face with trees and bushes
running up to it.
Before you get to the rock face Ed
pointed out that that in just one area there are a
large number of burnt rocks that are only burnt
on one side. There are also trees that a burnt and
just in front of the rock face is a large
cottonwood tree that is also fire damaged.
The rock face itself is literally covered
with bluish material that Ed's brother had
nicknamed 'alien puke' as it is splattered all over
the place. Loose rocks here and there also have
this material all over them. We spent quite a
while at this site to take lots of photographs,
film for Ed's documentary and I took several
rock samples to take back home. It is a most
curios site I have to admit but I kept an open
mind as to the possible cause of these anomalies
and could not agree with Ed that this was the c
rash site of the UFO that contained the creatures
filmed in the Alien Autopsy film. If the Alien
Autopsy film is a fake, which I'm convinced it
is, then this by definition could not be a crash
site associated with it. It does not mean of
course that Ed could have located a real UFO
crash site. Leaving the site we headed to
Roswell for the UFO Festival where I was to
lecture at the International UFO Museum, and
Ed, Jody and Dave were to carry on filming for
their planned documentary. After a few days in
Roswell we headed back to Albuquerque. I flew
home to the UK and Ed and the rest drove back
to where they live in California.
Upon return to the UK I wrote about the
trip, which was published in a variety of
magazines as well as on my web site. The rock
samples that I had brought back with me were
stored away and remained so until the early part
of 2008. Ed had previously had his own test on
such samples and the bluish material had been
identified as cristobalite. I made a few enquiries
in the UK as to where I might get someone to
look at the samples I had but I drew a complete
blank.
RONNIE MILIONE
In the early part of 2008 I was contacted
via email by American UFO researcher Ronnie
Milione in New York. Ronnie has a BS, MS and
PhD in computer science. Eventually I
mentioned to Ronnie in one email exchange that
I had these rock samples from New Mexico and
wondered if he knew anyone who could take a
look at them for me. Ronnie didn't hesitate and
informed me that he had a friend at the
Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in
New York who would be wiling to analyze the
rock samples I had. Three rock samples were
sent to Ronnie Milione and the results came
back in September 2008.
The samples had been analyzed by Dr R.
Ronald Rau. Although retired Dr Rau still holds
a position at the BNL as a Guest scientist at the
Physics department. In two reports Dr Rau in
the first report numbered: CNM-080108RAU
details over 4 pages the radioactivy found in the
samples. There is a lot of technical information
contained in this report and I put it to one side
to ask further questions. I asked Dr Ray via
Ronnie Milione what he made of the bluish
material that covered the rocks. The second
report numbered: 080109RAU again is very
technical but on page 4 under the heading of
Final Comments it states: Analysis by x-ray
diffraction has revealed the material is mainly a
variety of cristobalite, a mineral in the
tetragonal system which is a form of SiO2 -
polymorphous with quart, coesite, stishovite
and tridymite. According to the analysis,
tridymite is found in moon rocks and
meteorites, and tridymite alters into cristobalite
when subjected to high temperatures, as micro
traces found in these samples given by Ronnie
Milione. As one would be the case when as
stricken UFO disintegrates upon an
uncontrolled, high-speed entry into the Earth's
atmosphere could be this situation.
To be perfectly honest I was taken by
surprise by this last statement. Was Dr Rau
saying that these rocks and the material found
on them were caused by a stricken UFO? I
contacted Dr Rau and asked his to explain in
layman's terms the significance of the
radioactivity measured and whether or not he
really did think these were the results of a UFO
crash. His reply in full is as follows:
"Hello Philip,
Thank you for your questions and
working with my dear friend, Ronnie Milione.
Ok to answer your questions lets answer you in
two parts here.
1. In ref. to report CNM-080108RAU the
reports basically is saying that there are small
traces of radioactivity. The radioactivity traces
was a measurable amount 238 U [which is the
most common isotope of uranium found in
nature] but is very surprising that it would be on
these samples. The other micro-trace picked up
was 214Pb [lead] and 214Bi [bismuth] which
has very short half-lives but to my account this
can be viewed as neglible. What is interesting is
238 U on the rock samples. This can be caused
by a condition called Locard's Exchange
Principle. This also can be explained in my
second report [CNM-080109RAU] as the same
phenomena.
2. Basically here is what Locard's
Exchange does - "Every Contact Leaves a
Trace". So when you have a huge high impact
and high temperature yield you can a transfer of
materials from the source to destination at the
point of impact. For example from so-called
ship to the surrounding area in that impact area
can be very well the cause.
I would conclude that something very
fast high temperature yield cause the
surrounding area to exhibit the Locard's
Exchange transformation.
Would I tag it a "UFO"...Probably
because the unknown source is unknown!

that it could well have been a UFO that caused
these effects. I had fully expected his reports to
offer a conventional explanation but apparently
not. I hope to publish both of Dr Rau's reports in

the liberty of showing Dr Rau's reports to a
select few UFO researchers to see what the

Ronnie Milione so it seems only right that
Ronnie should be the first to comment on them.

KERRY Williams digs through a half-a-
dozen or so photo albums, picks one out and
quickly flips through it until she finds the
picture she's looking for.
“Here,” she says breathlessly with a
huge grin on her face. “These are the orbs I
captured on Valentine's Day - look how many
there are.”
Ms Williams, a ghost whisperer living in
Maryborough, lives and breathes the spirit
world - her eyes sparkle as she talks animatedly
about the paranormal experiences she's had in
the Heritage City.
“I love the spirit world. It's thrilling and
rewarding and it's completely changed the way
I lived my life.”
But Ms Williams hasn't been a believer
long. It was only in 2003 after she lost her
mother when she first started her “spiritual
journey”.
“Things started to happen to me,” she
said. “I was getting messages - at first I thought
they were coincidences and then I thought
maybe I was going a bit loopy.”
After that Ms Williams decided to read
everything and anything she could get hands on
about the spirit world.
“(Spirits) don't necessarily whisper in
your ear. You get signs. But if you're afence
sitter nothing is going to happen to you; you
have to have 100% belief.
“They come to me because I have
opened my mind and I truly believe.”
Ms Williams doesn't go looking for
spirits - they come to her.
“Sometimes it's just a pull but I do see
them, I feel them and I communicate with them.
I try to help most go to the white light to cross
over.”
She said one of her most cherished
experiences was when she was sitting in her
lounge room watching television when she felt
something caressing her head.
“I knew straight away it was a loving
spirit and luckily my camera was nearby. I took
a picture of the top of my head and caught my
mum's orb. I know it's her orb because it's
pink.”
The spirits Ms Williams communicate
with are from the “other side” or the earthbound
spirits of humans who have passed away and
not crossed over.
She has learnt to communicate with
them and her “spirit guides” through
meditation.
Ms Williams only started snapping
pictures around her home and Maryborough last
year after being given a small digital camera as
a present.
Since then she has filled albums with
pictures of a pink orb in various places around
her house, pictures showing large numbers or
different sized orbs, blue mists and dark shapes
which she simply can't explain.
It's hard not to be a bit spooked when Ms
Williams flips through her numerous photo
albums and describes in detail each photograph.
“I get so excited every time I pick up my
pictures from Big W. I don't have a computer so
I can't look at them properly until I get them
printed - it's always a thrill.”

Kerry says Maryborough would have to

Street to take pictures and when I saw how
many were around I immediately asked for

“Earthbound spirits from the dark side
are real low lives - they exude violence and
hate. They want to cause mayhem. Protection is
important because they want to attach
themselves to you.”
Ms Williams has had some frightening
experiences with evil spirits over the past few
years.
She said to protect herself she calls on
her spirit guides and surrounds herself with a
white light.
“To ward off bad spirits you burn white
sage incense, frankincense or sage smudge
sticks. They don't like perfume either.” []

that go bump in the night can’t be explained
logically or scientifically.
“If a home gives you the creeps, there
may be good reason,” says Dr Wilson Yong,
CEO and founder of TaoistSecret.com and
Cosmic Metaphysic Research Foundation.
“The TV changing volume or channels
by itself, muffled cries and whispers, a strange
scent that doesn’t belong there, and a creepy
feeling that you are being watched — people are
unlikely to talk about it unless they believe that
you believe. No one wants to be perceived as a
psycho,” says Dr Yong.

Having paranormal activities in your
house, says Dr Yong, can be a drain on health
and energy.
Dr Yong’s clients includes real estate
agents and homeowners. Their concerns run the
whole gamut.
“Some say the homes are too dark.
Others have an issue with previous occupants
dying in the house. But their goals are the same:
Replace the bad with good.
“If it’s a problem ghost that is disturbing
you, you need to address it. Sometimes, these
things want to drive you out of their home.
Often, speaking aloud to it will get it to behave.
“Why? If the spirit is playing tricks on
you, it probably wants to be noticed. If that
doesn’t work, call in the professionals,” he
advises.
Animals, says Dr Yong, are more
sensitive to supernatural things than people.
“If you can, bring along a dog when you
inspect a property. If the dog appears anxious,
barks at something unseen, cowers without
apparent reason or stares at nothing in
particular, there may be something there.”
“There are a lot of TV shows about
ghosts, which only serve to impress upon our
consciousness that hauntings are real. But
though ghost stories are common, actual
sightings aren’t,” says Dr Ong Hean Tatt, feng
shui scientist and an author on Chinese culture
and management science.
“Of course, not everything is caused by
supernatural forces. Before strange sounds send
you scurrying from your house, it’s usually best
to call in an expert — like a roofing or plumbing
specialist.
“Most of the time, the problem can be
fixed with a hammer or screwdriver. That
animalistic sound may be rusty hinges or loose
shingles. Electrical appliances that switch on
and off on their own may be due to faulty
wiring. Shadows or reflections in the mirror
could be alcohol- or drug-induced
hallucinations.”
Dr Ong says high levels of
electromagnetic energy can also cause paranoia
— such as the feeling of being watched,
headaches and nausea which are often reported
together with paranormal events.
“However, it may also be this that is
attracting spooky visitors, since it is commonly
believed, in the paranormal research field, that
spirits need energy to manipulate their
surroundings, and so are attracted to
electromagnetic fields,” he explains.

For many, Sedona, Ariz., is a trendy
outpost — like Tombstone or Taos; a sunny
Southwest town where you can pick up a
painting and down some good food.
But for others, Sedona is Mecca, a
destination for pilgrims. Even before psychic

(sites where the Earth's lines of energy intersect)
traditional religions were already flourishing
here. Seekers came to see the glory of creation,
enjoy the tranquility and visit the Chapel of the
Holy Cross.
The famous chapel is just the flagship of
faith in Sedona, of course. If religions were ice
cream, Sedona would be Baskin Robbins —
from the gauzy New Age shops and imported
Asian faiths to the traditional rituals of Native
Americans and more traditional Christians. In
short, Sedona is a wonderful magnet for
seekers.
"We are totally thrilled to be in a place
that attracts the spiritually hungry," says Pastor
Mary Piotrowski of St. Andrew's Episcopal.
"We have a whole bunch of people here — from
40 years old or so — who were raised without
religion. They came to realize something was
missing, and the reason they are here is they are
desperately searching for God. At St. Andrew's
we make ourselves open to spiritual seekers. We
have a labyrinth in our parking lot, for instance.
What church wouldn't feel blessed to be in such
a place?"
Indeed, the seekers come from far and
wide and from dozens of backgrounds. One
attraction is Sedona's world famous Chapel of
the Holy Cross. The idea for the design of the
chapel came to Marguerite Brunswig Staude
while she was looking at the newly built Empire
State Building in 1932. She claimed she could
almost see a great cross running through the
building. It became an idea for a shrine. Frank
Lloyd Wright built a model of it and, after an
earlier version of the chapel was abandoned in
Budapest, the Arizona structure was completed
in 1956. Today the chapel is not only a sacred
landmark but an internationally beloved piece
of architecture. One believer, who wanted to
remain anonymous in order to showcase the
chapel, not herself, said, "The people who come
here are touched. People ask for tissues after
visiting it. Some are moved to relate their life
stories to others. It's a special spot. It's
beautiful."
"A special spot" might also describe
how many young people who follow New Age
ideas see Sedona. They set up shop here and
practice alternative forms of healing, feeling,
worshipping and being. Frommer's guidebook
claims "You can hardly throw a smudge stick
around these parts without hitting a psychic."
Jennifer Gentry, owner of the Sedona Crystal
Vortex Metaphysical store, is just one who felt
drawn to Sedona.
"I've lived here for 51/2 years," she says.
"But I've been coming here for more than 20
years. I was drawn here by the natural beauty
and the energy. The first time when I came here
I was only 14, but I knew it was a sacred place."
Today, Gentry's shop offers everything
from psychic readings and massages to aura
photography and books. She even does readings
over the phone for people who can't show up in
person.
"I think when you come to Sedona, you
need to be very conscious of what your
'mindset' is," she says. "I believe that whatever
is in your mind at the time you come here will
be magnified. Many people come here looking
to be healed."
According to people in tune with such
things, there are four vortex sites in the natural
landscape in Sedona — Bell Rock, Boynton
Canyon, the Airport Vortex and Red Rock
Crossing. Over the years, millions have visited
the sites. Today, taking people to visit them has
become a cottage industry for young
entrepreneurs. Several companies offer tours,
some using helicopters.
The interesting thing is most traditional
faiths don't see the vortexes as a threat, but — as
the Rev. Piotrowski says — they become a
reason to fortify their own faith.
When you live in Sedona you are almost
forced to think about otherworldly matters.
People feel compelled to think about their own
beliefs and examine their own deeply held
convictions. And when they do, many find what
they were looking for down inside of
themselves, not in the surrounding landscape.
Bliss becomes a matter of the heart.
A local bumper sticker proclaims "I
found heaven in Sedona, Arizona."
What the bumper sticker doesn't say is "I
found it within myself." []

NEW YORK
After she was laid off from her job at
Tiffany & Co. in New York City and forced to
pack up her cosy apartment and move back to
her family home, Siobhan Lamont said she felt
lost and confused. She had just ended a long-
term relationship, her brother was sick, and
everything seemed in disarray.
"I was in a desperate state," she says. "It
was hard to find the little light at the end of the
tunnel."
So Lamont, 23, did something that five
years earlier, she never would have imagined:
She called a psychic.
Throughout the country, as the economy
crumbles and the unemployment rate soars,
people like Lamont are increasingly turning to
psychics for hope.
Psychic Derek Calibre, who charges
$120 for a one-hour session, says business has
more than doubled in recent months, up to four
or five readings a day. Calibre said that people
today are "struggling and worried" and much
more willing to take a chance on psychic

intuition.
While there are no official statistics
available, Rosemary (The Celtic Lady)
McArthur, CEO and founder of the American,
Canadian and U.K. Association of Psychics &
Healers, estimates the industry is up 30 per cent
from last year.
"Everyone has said that their readings
have gone up incredibly," agrees Dawn Carr,
founding member of the American Association
of Psychics and Mediums, based in Boston. "It's
surreal." About a third of callers are so-called
psychic virgins, who are trying clairvoyance for
the first time, she says.
Psychics have also noticed their
clientele growing more diverse, with many
more calls from men and people from industries
across the spectrum.
Those who study consumer behaviour
say it's not unusual for people to turn to
psychics during tough economic times.
Stuart Vyse, a psychology professor at
Connecticut College and author of Believing in
Magic: The Psychology of Superstition (Oxford
University Press, $21.95), says that when faced
with uncertainty, people are desperate for
anything that gives them a sense of control --
even if it's just an illusion.
"The simple act of doing something
makes you feel that you have some control in an
uncertain world," he says.
And while love and relationships were
once at the forefront of fortune seekers' minds,
these days, Calibre said, clients' questions about
whether their jobs are in danger, and what to do
if they are, now consume about 70 per cent of
session time, versus less than 40 per cent a year
ago.
"They're asking, 'What's next for me?
This is the ship going down. Am I going to get
a life raft? Am I going to get on the lifeboat?'"
Carlos Aguilar, 45, says that although he
used to consult a psychic once or twice a year,
lately he's been calling much more frequently --
about once a month. Aguilar last year lost the
restaurant he owned for a decade and is now
unemployed, with mounting debt and creditors
calling. He says he wants to know whether he'll
be able to regain his financial footing.
"I'm just trying to find some kind of
reassurance that my life isn't over. Even though
things look really bleak and really bad, it's
really nice to hear someone say, 'Hang in there.
Things are going to be OK.'"
While it's easy to question the value of
paying upwards of $100 for advice gleaned
through tarot cards and crystal balls, these
psychics say they are providing their clients
with a valuable service.
"It's not that I'm waving a wand and
giving them a job," Calibre says. Instead, he
tries to help his clients identify forgotten talents
and interests that could be used as they move
from one career to the next or alert them to
symbols that could be significant in the future.
When it came to discussing Lamont's
career, for instance, Calibre revealed a card
featuring a pink triangle with stick figures in
different colours holding hands under a
rainbow. The image symbolizes community,
mental health and working with society, he told
her. "This could be something that you're
interested in," he said.

In an age where tough police work,
gathering facts and forensics, can solve crimes,
pendulums, pictures and psychics can seem a
little far fetched. But in some cases, families
want answers and go looking for help in an
unlikely place. Psychic Ann Fisher says, "it is
like a vision, a feeling, its hard to describe."
Psychics say they can be helpful to a
case, pointing out an unexplored area, or even
reopening an investigation from murders to
missing persons. Albany Psychic Ann Fisher
considers herself a psychic detective, working
on several high profile cases in the Capital
Region. Her first work, and one of the biggest in
recent decades, convicted serial killers Lemuel
Smith. Fisher says with police, she walked the
path Lemuel took after his first murder, picking
up clues. Her work, kept secret for a decade.
Fisher says, "ten years later a friend said to me
I never knew you worked on the Lemuel Smith
case, its on the police books. I said I didn't want
anyone to know."
Another case involving a Waterford
family, Armond LaForest went missing in 1988.
With a picture, a map, and a pendulum, Fisher
says she was able to retrace LaForest's steps,
from Cohoes to the Mohawk.
Fisher says, "I told him he went into the
river and he was with this woman, there was a
fight of some kind."
After a search, police located the car in
the spot where Fisher said it would be, LaForest
dead inside. Turns out, the woman driver of the
car left LaForest as the car sank. She went to
prison and his family had closure.
In other cases, psychics go looking for
families. Mary Lyall says, "we were hoping that
would be the answer. Psychics would tell us
where she was and we would find her and bring
her home."
When Suzanne Lyall went missing more
than ten years ago on the UAlbany campus her
parents looked for any lead that would bring
their daughter home, whether it came from a
police investigation or a clairvoyant.
Mary Lyall says,"everyday it was
another psychic. At the end I think the count
was over 75. Everyone had a different scenario,
it was a roller coaster for us."
The same in the Jaliek Rainwalker case.
Chief George Bell fielding dozens of calls from
psychics claiming to know Jaliek's
whereabouts. Chief Bell says, "to the point
where I have had them crying in my office.
They say the body is here, we have to look here,
we have to do this."
Cambridge-Greenwich along with the
other Capital Region departments FOX23
polled say they do not seek out help from
psychics.
But, if one calls with information on a
case, every department says every lead is
followed up. But more often than not Chief Bell
says, "the only way you're going to solve these
crimes is police work. They have their beliefs
and I know there are some that have helped
other agencies, but I think the chance is slim to
none."
Still, victims families hold out hope.
That one day, whether it be a psychic or police,
someone will solve their case and bring their
loved one home.
Doug Lyall, Suzanne Lyall's father, says,
"we still want answers. We want to know if
Suzy can't come to our door, we want to know
what happened and if we can get it from a
psychic or from someone else, god bless them."

EL PASO, Texas -- Local psychic, or as
she likes to be called intuitive sensitive, Carol
Reeves has been pretty busy lately, but instead
of the normal love and health questions, she is
getting a lot of question about money.
"Most things that are asked are about
jobs, careers, money," Reeves said. "I had a gal
last week just out of the blue everybody in her
corporation lost their job, and here's a woman
with three children that's going ‘now what?’"
People are desperate, she said, and they
have nowhere else to turn. They've hit rock
bottom and they're in need of important
questions answered.
"When am I going to get another job? I
applied for a job or several jobs, what looks best
for me?” Reeves said.
So Reeves reads their tarot cards, gives
them guidance, and in some cases teaches them
to move on from a job they were laid off from.
"They mentally take golden scissors, cut
the energy cord and sometimes that can just
seem like a cable cord almost, so difficult to cut,
but they do," Reeves said.
So KFOX asked Reeves to read the
cards of the economy and to tell us what the
cards said about the future of our country. First
she drew the wheel of fortune, fortune sounds
good.
"There are cycles in life, and sometimes
you go through very bad cycles, but it does turn
around,” Reeves said.
Which means it won't be bad forever,
she said.
"It’s got to start over, the economy has
got to renew itself," Reeves said.
But the question is when will it renew,
and the answer was hard to hear.
"It's going to take a minimum of three
years for this completely to turn around,”
Reeves said. []
Desperate 'Wife' agrees
to return visit to 'Swap'
It's the economy, stupid.
That's the only reason "Wife Swap"
participant Dr. Sheree Silver and her family
agreed to a "reswap" to mark the ABC reality
show's 100th episode.
They needed a quick buck from the
network to help make ends meet.

"My first reaction was 'No way, there's
no way I'm going to do this again,'" Silver told
the Daily News. "But everything else I was
doing was just not going anywhere and we were
in a financial crunch."
"Wife Swap" pairs families for a two-
week challenge where the wives exchange
husbands, kids and houses to find out what it's
like to live someone else's life.
For the 100th episode, ABC asked fans
to vote for their favorite previously swapped
family, out of a pool of 24. When the field was
narrowed to four, producers chose the Silvers, a
performing arts family with self-proclaimed
psychic abilities, and the Heenes, storm chasers
who spend all their free time breaking
everything down to a science.
The 100th episode airs tonight at 8.
"When I watched the first episode we
participated in, I was in shock. The appearance
was that my kids were only involved in dance
and the other woman's kids were into sports, so
basically my boys were gay somehow because
they were dancers. It was terrible," said Silver.
The second time around repaired some
of the damage, she said.
"Some good came out of it because,
after the first time, my youngest son, who was
10 years old, his shyness kicked in," Silver said.
"He became a little too self-conscious after
being told that boys aren't dancers, and it made
him very aware that other people think
differently. This time they gave it back to him."
Richard Heene, who had to live by
Silver's rules for a week when she came to live
in his home, said that he, too, was wary about
the "reswap," but only because he hates to see
himself on camera.
"I feel like everything I do is stupid,"
said Heene. "But with this opportunity, I got to
redo things in a different way. I just made sure
that I was going to have more fun." []

Marty Rienstra and I met at the
Wildflower Bakery in Sedona today on 1.30.09.
We had lunch and discussed where we would go
today. She had Nicholas Mann’s book, Sedona,
Sacred Earth and we wanted to follow the
chakra system he’d outlined that was part of the
geomagnetic landscape of red rocks.
We discussed the rainbow at Rainbow
Bridge that had appeared shortly after we’d
drum near the Sun circle far below the butte.
Marty noted that she’d just gotten back from
Egypt. And did I know that Isis (we had
originally wanted to go to Isis Rock in Long
Canyon, the Crown Chakra area) was shown
with seven serpents on her crown that were
rainbow colored.
I told her about Grandmother Rainbow
Snake who lived near our home. She was
twelve feet long, had blue eyes and one late
night, while she was stretched clear across our
dirt road, I accidentally ran over her and killed
her. I had felt awful. I cried. The next morning
I picked up her dead body and put it inside our
gate and honored her spirit. That afternoon, I’d
climbed on my horse, Cinnamon, after a
thundershower, to go riding. As I turned onto
the main muddy road that paralleled our home,
there was rainbow across the canyon. And then,
when I looked north, there was a long necked
cumulus cloud with a distinct snake’s head on it.
I’ll never forget that moment and had
halted the horse and just stared at the cloud.
Then, I heard Grandmother whispering to me in
spirit. She told me that she was a Rainbow
Snake, and that she had died to that she might
better serve me from the other side. I told Marty
that I’d been a snake person since in my teens
when I had been initiated with two bull snakes.
I love snakes. And the love me. We had a
spirited and wide-ranging discussion about
rainbows, needless to say.
When we got up to leave and pushed out
the door, I was stunned. There, sitting on the
pavement near the door, was a beautiful pigeon-
-the sun shining on her breast highlighting all
the gorgeous rainbow feathers across her breast.
I was awed and told Marty this was a direct
response from Spirit over us looking at the
rainbow myths of many cultures. Our rainbow
bird met us right outside the door of the
Wildflower Bakery! We stopped and I gave the
pigeon some break and then some birdseed as
thanks. Marty noted that in the Yavapai myths,
doves play a very important part. And that
pigeons were a member of the dove family. We
found that intriguing and validating. The last
thing I told her was that with this kind of swift
response from Spirit toward us, it ought to be an
interesting day on Grassy Knolls.
We had decided to go to Grassy Knolls
in Mann’s book first. The reasoning is that we
were catalytic in bringing energy online at
Rainbow Bridge where the emergence hole for
the snake Kachina was located. I wanted to
follow, in line and in order, the upward energy.
So, instead of going to Isis Rock (Crown
chakra) in Long Canyon, we would go to
Grassy Knolls where Mann indicated it was the
brow chakra of the area.
There are no maps showing 'Grassy
Knolls.' Only a sentence in Mann's book, that it
was near Long canyon and across the highway
from it, was all. This area looked like nonstop
pine, juniper, brush, cactus and a lot of rock.
Standing at the parking area of Long Canyon,
the only thing we knew was that Grassy Knolls
was above Long Canyon. We crossed the road
and began to look around. We finally decided a
steep, rocky slope might be the answer. After a
lot of huffing and puffing (mind you, we're in
our sixties...), we got to what seemed to be the
top.
Marty said, "Look, there's a grassy
knoll!" I was thrilled she'd found it. Walking
over, it was another circle filled with yellowed
grass, some cactus with juniper around in a
circle outside of it. We gave a welcoming
ceremony. Then, I closed my eyes t get in
contact to see if the local spirit would come
forward and be helpful.
What saw was gray and white--ghost
like figure. At first, I thought it was a tall Native
American man, his hands raised with rattles and
singing. What struck me the most was seven
huge feathers sticking out of his hair like a
ceremonial crown. I focused more and realized
it was a very old, wrinkle-faced Native
American woman. As soon as I did that,
another six grandmothers appeared in their
Native American garb. I laughed. I said,
"You're the Seven Grandmothers from the

over here?!" Boynton Canyon was only about a
mile south of where we were. The tall woman
with the feather crown stopped rattling and
singing. She told me that they care for this spot.
I thought that was great. I asked her permission
to enter this circle and she said we could. And
to enter and leave from the south. I said we
would. When I told Marty what I'd seen, she
laughed. She told me that she felt the
Grandmothers from Boynton also. Amazing.
Marty put her flute bag and her hiking stick
against a limb on a tree. She said she'd go with
me to help me find the second knoll.
We found it moments later, a little
downward from the other. The knolls were
were thickly covered with junipers. I told
Marty that I was going in after the opening
ceremony, sit down and drum. She nodded and
took off for her site. I got situated and for the
next ten minutes, simply drummed. I also saw
Mother Earth bring up her rainbow energy up
into my feet,legs, go through my heart, through
my drum and then to a pyramid shaped apu
(mountain spirit) in front of us. I then
visualized the huge rainbow energy flowing
through the buttes where Rainbow Bridge was
located, across to Lizard's Head and then curve
south and then west across Boynton Canyon,
through Long Canyon to Isis Rock, and then to
anchor in Marty's circle, then my own. And
finally, to bring this energy to a connected, fully
moving rainbow circle to the apu in front of me.
After ten minutes I stopped playing.
"Eileen?" Marty called.
Confused, I said, "What?"
"I can't find my circle. I can't find my
flute bag or hiking stick."
I grimaced. "Okay, I called, "I'm
coming over." I got up, left everything in the
circle and walked out of the south gate of the
circle. Joining up with Marty, she had a
confused look on her face.
"I can't find it. I'd swear my circle was
here, but it's not."
I looked around. "I thought your circle
was further west from here," and we both
walked that way.
Well, it became evident real fast that (a)
her circle was missing (b)her flute bag and
hiking stick had DISAPPEAREd and (c) we
were going to have to hunt for them. I told
Marty that this place had an androgynous
energy, that her circle was the female energy
and the one where I sat, was male energy. An
androgynous vortex like this was usually a
portal to another dimension. And as I looked
around, everything seem familiar and yet, it
wasn't.
I had a real scary experience with
another androgynous vortex at a temple mound
in Ohio twenty years earlier. I walked through
the Beech and Oak druid gate which was the
entrance, with permission. As soon as I had, I
fell out of dizziness because the place was that
powerful. And, I lost my way. I turned around
to crawl out on my hands and knees, but the gate
was gone! The only way I got out of that inter
dimensional portal doorway vortex was to plead
with the spirits who took care of it. They sent
me a small sparrow to guide me out. I related
this story to Marty.
"You know, your stuff has been
transported," I told her. "The Seven
Grandmothers took it."
"But why?" Marty had just bought an
incredibly beautiful double flute that had been
inlaid with turquoise. She was so proud of that
flute and had wanted to play it at Grassy Knolls
because there were two spots on it indicated in
Mann's book. Why not take a double flute?
Seemed reasonable to me, too.
Shrugging, I said, "In my experience
they take it to bless it and then give it back. Or,
they take it to teach a person a lesson about
giving up something they want too much." I
looked around the area. "It can also be they
took it because they want us to look around
more than we have. They may want us to see
something more. Or, maybe they want to stop
us from doing ceremony until a certain time.
That time could be when they transfer the bag
back to you."
So, we searched for one hour, nonstop,
tramping up and down and back and forth in the
area where we knew the first knoll meadow had
been. We found nothing. I told Marty I really
wanted to get back to my circle to complete the
stuff I'd started and she agreed. Marty looked
for that thirty minutes I was at my circle. When
I was done, she came over and said, "I think
we're just going to have to let it go."
Nodding, I gathered up my stuff and left
the sacred circle. "Yes." I took out a towel and
my knife and started cutting strips.
"What's that for?" she asked.
Grimly, I told her since we're in an inter
dimensional vortex that if we don't leave 'bread
crumbs' or something we can follow, we'll
NEVER find this area again. I'd learned my
lesson back in Ohio.

Scientists are to dig up ice dating back
more than 100,000 years in an attempt to shed
light on how global warming will change the
world over the next century.
The ice, at the bottom of the Greenland
ice sheet, was laid down at a time when
temperatures were 3C (5.4F) to 5C warmer than
they are today.
With temperatures forecast to rise by up
to 7C in the next 100 years, the ice more than
8,000ft (2,400m) below the surface is thought
by researchers to hold valuable clues to how
much of the ice sheet will melt.
Drilling will start in northern Greenland
during the summer in an international project
involving researchers from 18 countries to
extract ice cores covering the Eemian Period.
The Eemian began 130,000 years ago,
ending 15,000 years later, and is the most recent
time in the Earth's past when temperatures
resembled those that can be expected if
greenhouse gas emissions are not brought under
control.
Carbon dioxide, methane and other
chemicals trapped in the ice can provide a
detailed picture of the atmosphere and the
climate thousands of years ago.
Fragments of organic matter can offer
details about animals and plants alive when the
ice formed, while particles of dirt can indicate
forest fires, tundra fires and volcanic activity.
Analysis of the ice should provide the
first measurement of CO2 levels over
Greenland during the Eemian and the most
detailed analysis yet achieved of climate
indicators from the period.
Lars Berg Larsen, of the University of
Copenhagen, which is leading the project, said:
“We are looking into this period to find out what
happens to the climate if you get 3 to 5 degrees
warmer.
“The Eemian is the nearest time we
know that matches temperatures we can expect
in the next 100 or 200 years. It will tell us much
about what might happen.”
Four researchers from the British
Antarctic Survey (BAS) will be taking part in
the operation. They are hopeful of seeing ice not
only from the whole Eemian but the years
preceding it as well, which could hold clues to
what prompted the temperature to start rising, or
at least could chart the atmospheric changes that
accompanied the rise.
Researchers also hope that the chemical
traces hidden in the ice up to 8,340ft below the
surface will reveal how the Greenland ice sheet
responded to the higher temperatures. This will
have implications for sea level rises in the
coming century. If the ice sheet melts entirely,
seas would be expected to rise by 21ft.

Ancient prophecies that the world will
end in the year 2012 are creating quite a stir.
But is the hype about prophecy -- or
profit?
CBS 2's Susan Carlson asks the
question, "2012: real or not?"
Nanci Flynn was intrigued when she
first heard about predictions the world will end
in 2012 and started her own research.
"When I see so many things across the
board pointing to exactly the same time frame,
it's something that we need to take seriously,"
she said.
She believes the financial crisis could be
the first sign.
"There's talk that in the end of days,
there will be economic chaos," Flynn said. "I
think we're seeing that."
Books predicting disaster in 2012 are
flying off store shelves, and the hype is only
expected to grow. But when the dust settles, will
2012 go the way of Y2K?
"You cannot just pick and choose and
interweave pieces of un-contextualized history
together to sell a story that might help you sell
books," says Gary Feinman, the Field Museum's
curator of Mesoamerican anthropology.
December 21, 2012 marks the end of the
5,000-year Mayan calendar. Feinman says
while many are attaching catastrophic
significance to that date, for the Mayans, the
date simply marked the end of a cycle, not the
end of the world.
"Kind of like an odometer flipping
over," he said.
But you wouldn't know that from
surfing the Net. Googling "2012 disaster"
results in more than 2 million websites. People
are buying it, literally: everything from
emergency supply kits to 2012 T-shirts. And
right on cue, a blockbuster movie is coming out
this fall.
Fueling the hype, Dec. 21, 2012 falls on
the winter solstice. And it's supposed to be when
the sun aligns with the center of the Milky Way
galaxy. While that sounds impressive …
"That happens every year," said Mark
Hammergren, astronomer at Adler Planetarium.
"It was closer aligned in the past; there's no
consequence to this."
Despite predictions of cosmic chaos,
Hammergren says there's no scientific data
pointing to anything unusual happening in the
year 2012.
"A woman asked me if I thought Jesus
was coming back soon," said Scot McKnight,
professor of religious studies at North Park
University. "And she was definitely impacted
by the 2012."
Religious furor is also driving
speculation the world is coming to an end. But
according McKnight, some of that may be
politically motivated.
"It doesn't surprise me one bit that with
a new Democratic president, some evangelical
Christians think the end of the world is near," he
said.
The bible does reference the end of
days, but there's no indication when.
"Date-setting was denounced by Jesus,"
McKnight said.
But Flynn, like many others, still won't
shrug off the 2012 prophecies.
"Suppose it were real -- would you still
ignore it?" she asked.
We questioned the main areas where the
hype is coming from. Several ancient
civilizations and many prophets, including
Nostradamus, have been interpreted -- or
misinterpreted -- with Armageddon predictions
linked to 2012. On the other end of the
spectrum, some spiritualists predict that that
year will not bring disaster but instead usher in
an age of enlightenment. []
MAYA MYTH
REVEALED

Archaeologists have unearthed a pair of
monumental stucco panels in Guatemala that
appear to depict one of the New World's oldest-
known creation stories, going back thousands of
years to what experts call "the cradle of Maya
civilization." The discovery suggests that the
saga, known as the Popol Vuh, was a
centerpiece of Maya beliefs for well more than
a millennium and stands as one of the world's
enduring religious stories.
The Popol Vuh chronicles how the Maya
gods created the world and made several
attempts to fashion people to live in it, including
"mud people" and "wooden people" that didn't
quite meet the grade. Finally, the gods got it
right, creating the people who inhabited the
urban site now known as El Mirador - where the
panels were found - and the hundreds of
thousands of acres comprising the Serpent
Kingdom.
A Quiche Maya text of the Popol Vuh
was found in the highland town of
Chichicastenango in 1700 and transcribed by a
Dominican monk named Francisco Ximenez.
The saga's two main characters are the Hero
Twins, named Hunahpu and Xbanlanque, who
are sort of like a double dose of Hercules.
The 26-foot-long (8-meter-long) El
Mirador panels were made of carved and
modeled lime plaster, and lined a water
collection system in a part of the city known as
the Central Acropolis. They date back to the
Late Preclassic period of Maya culture, which
goes from about 300 B.C. to the early 1st
century A.D., according to an account of the
find from Idaho State University.
The amazing thing about the panels is
that they show a pair of swimmers, framed by
cosmic monsters including an undulating
serpent and an old-man deity with outstretched
wings. Idaho State University's Richard Hansen,
president of the Idaho-based FARES
Foundation, said the swimmers appear to
represent the fabled Hero Twins.
"One of the swimmers has a decapitated
head on his flanks, which is likely the
decapitated head of his father, who was known
in Maya mythology as Hun Hunahpu," Hansen
is quoted as saying in the university's account.
The other swimmer wears a jaguar headdress,
which would typically be associated with
Xbalanque ("Young Jaguar Sun.").
"All in all, the scene is a complex blend
of early Maya mythology and cosmology,"
Hansen said.
Hector Escobedo, Guatemala's vice
minister of culture, said the find "suggests that
the antiquity of the Popol Vuh as an authentic
creation story extends far into the Preclassic
eras." The find also adds to the importance
attached to the Mirador Basin as a center of
ancient Maya culture.
Hansen has been doing research for
years in the remote Mirador Basin, which is at
the center of a major forest conservation
program established by the Guatemalan
government. The Idaho researcher served as a
consultant to actor/director Mel Gibson on the
controversial movie "Apocalypto." And
although that film is now far back on the DVD
shelves, Gibson is still taking an interest in
Mirador. Recently, he called the site "arguably
the greatest archaeological find in the Western
Hemisphere."

Pushing for Aspartame
Ban Should Be
Commended

I want to personally extend my thanks and
commendation to 12 members of the Hawaii State
House of Representatives for cosponsoring and
cosigning the Resolution by Rep. Mele Carroll.
The resolution asks the FDA and Health and
Human Services Secretary to rescind the FDA
approval for aspartame, the neurotoxic and
artificial sweetener found in 6,000 USA food
products, despite the very well known fact that it
is metabolized as methanol and formaldehyde.
These members include:

These representatives have seen past the
perfidious corporate lobbyists opposing this
Resolution on commercial grounds, for fear their
products might be impugned or questioned. I also
warmly acknowledge and thank Mele Carroll for
listening to her constituents enough to bring this
Resolution and the bill to ban aspartame forward.
The people of Hawaii need to know that
last September, parents in British Columbia,
Canada, prevailed upon their Education Ministry
to ban all artificial sweeeteners in the elementary
and middle schools, even though Health Canada,
the equivalent of the FDA, still approves the
products.
Apparently the parents in BC have been
paying more attention to the massive evidence of
neurotoxicity and carcinogenicity than the
responsible officials in Ottawa, Canada's Capital.
Similarly, parents in Hawaii should be
doing the same. Unfortunately, Hawaii residents
have another hurdle to overcome as Health
Department Director, Dr. Fukino, has done little
more than parrot industry mantras about how
those 200 industry-paid-for "studies" "prove"
aspartame to be "safe."
Hawaii isn't the only state considering
action on aspartame. Just last week, on Friday,
March 5, the State of California Office of
Environmental Hazards announced that its
Carcinogen Identification Committee will
consider labeling aspartame as a chemical that
causes cancer, and to require labeling as such. The
comment period is open till the end of May, and I
encourage Representatives, Senators, physicians
and health oriented people into organic foods, to
take the time to submit testimony.
This also puts on legal notice the
aspartame makers like Ajinomoto and the
corporations that add it to their products while
knowing full well that the formaldehyde it
metabolizes into causes cancer and serious
neurodegenerative illnesses. This is all according
to Proposition 65, which recently resulted in the
State of California suing Whole Foods because
they covered up a known carcinogen in their 365
Body Care products, like soaps and lotions.
I strongly recommend Hawaii residents
get involved, speak with your lawmakers and ask
them to cosign and cosponsor this important
Resolution of Mele Carroll, which will be turned
in next Wednesday and then assigned a number. If
your representative has signed it already, call the
representatives in the neighboring districts and
any whom you might already know personally.
I am particularly concerned about the
Chairman and the Vice Chairman of the House
Health Committee, the first committee assignment
for such a Resolution. Chair Ryan Yamane and
Vice Chair Scott Nishimoto declined to even
schedule a hearing on the bill to ban aspartame
earlier in the session, as did Senator David Ige of
Pearl City. This is pretty shocking as
obstructionist behaviour in any legislator, and
perhaps if readers in their House and Senate
Districts also spoke to these legislators and made
them realize that this is a deadly serious consumer
protection effort, we might seem some
meaningful results from these 2 reps and one state
senator (from Pearl City), because to date we have
seen none.
If you Representative is on the Consumer
Committee, where such a resolution would go
next, Chairman Robert Herkes and Vice Chair
McKelvey need to hear from you as well.
A similar Senate Resolution is languishing
in Senator Ige's Committee, Senate Resolution 13,
sponsored by Senator Suzanne Chun Oakland. Ige
killed a bill to ban last year and this year, and
killed the same Resolution last year also
sponsored by Suzanne Chun Oakland.

1965: Jim Schlatter, a chemist at G.D.
Searle & Company was working on a project to
discover new treatments for gastric ulcers. He
accidentally and unknowingly spilled some of the
heated chemical on his hand. Later he licked his
finger as he reached for a piece of paper, and
noticed the sweet taste. He and a friend decided to
test some in coffee and both agreed the chemical
had a sweet taste. The result: aspartame. The
manufacturer merely changed the FDA paperwork
from drug to food additive, but did not change the
substance itself.
1969: G.D. Searle applied for the first
patent on aspartame. Saccharin and cyclamate
were alleged to cause bladder cancer in rats.
March 1973: G.D. Searle submitted its
first petition to the FDA for aspartame use in
foods.
1974: FDA approved aspartame use in
carbonated beverages and in dry products.
December 1975: FDA task force
concluded that some of Searle's studies were
questionable and rescinded aspartame approval.
April 1976: FDA Commissioner Schmidt
wrote Senator Ted Kennedy, informing him of
G.D. Searle's "questionable integrity of the basic
safety data submitted (by Searle) for aspartame
safety."
January 1977: FDA Chief Counsel
Richard Merrill submitted a thirty-three-page
letter to U.S. attorney Samuel Skinner
recommending a grand jury investigation into
G.D. Searle "for concealing material facts and

making false statements in reports of animal
studies to establish the safety of aspartame." Two
specific studies of concern were cited. No action
was taken, and the statute of limitations for
prosecution expired.
July 1977: Samuel Skinner left the U.S.
attorney's office to represent G.D. Searle's law
firm, Sidley and Austin.
October 1980: FDA appointed Public
Board of Inquiry submitted a written
recommendation that NutraSweet not be
approved pending further brain tumor testing.
May 1981: Three of six FDA scientists
formally advised against aspartame approval.
July 1981: FDA Commissioner Arthur
Hull Hayes, Jr. solely approved NutraSweet
(aspartame) for dry products.
July 1983: FDA Acting-Commissioner
Mark Novitch, M.D. approved aspartame in
carbonated beverages and carbonated beverage
syrup bases.
October 1983: The NutraSweet Company
filed two patent extensions for an extension of
five years, ten months and seventeen days (each).
November 1984: Center for Disease
Control (CDC) published the first list of
consumer complaints related to aspartame use.
July 1986: The NutraSweet Company
filed thirty patent extensions for an extension of
five years, ten months and seventeen days (each).
November 1987: "NutraSweet: Health
and Safety Concerns" hearing was held by the
U.S. Committee on Labor and Human Resources,
Senator Howard Metzenbaum, chairman.
September 1992: FDA released a list of
ninety-two complaint categories filed against
NutraSweet, totaling over 8,000 complaints filed.

December 1992: G.D. Searle's patent
extensions on aspartame expired, allowing other
companies to produce aspartame.
1992 - 1997: A gap in public information,
and a media black-out begins.

More than a thousand pages of

documentation, covering UFO sightings
between 1987 and 1993, were made public for
the first time on Saturday, revealing information
that can only be considered as stunning.
Whilst the documents do not provide
absolute proof of the existence of aliens, at least
one of the reports offers sufficient mystery to
suggest that we are not alone.
On August 4, 1990 near the A9, at
Calvine, north of Pitlochry, a diamond shaped
UFO was seen hovering in daylight. According
to two witnesses, the UFO hovered for about 10
minutes, during which time military aircraft
were also seen making a series of low-level
passes. The craft later flew up into the sky at a
great speed.
The witnesses took a number of
photographs and at least six of these were given
to the Daily Record newspaper, who in turn
presented these to the Ministry of Defence. A
report was prepared for the then Under
Secretary of State (Sir Archie Hamilton) on
September 14, 1990, informing him that the
Scottish Daily Record might run a story on the
UFO sighting.
The photographs, which were not
published, showed a jet aircraft flying nearby.
Further investigation revealed that this was a
Harrier and that a second jet (possibly another
Harrier) may also be visible in one of the
photographs.
The MoD (Ministry of Defence) had no
idea where the Harriers had come from and the
sighting remains a mystery.
Similar shaped craft have been
considered as US Air Force Stealth fighters, but
none have been reported "hovering" before.
And even if it was, what was it doing there and
why did the Harriers appear to investigate the
craft (wouldn't they have been informed of such
an operation beforehand?)
The sighting was certainly taken
seriously by the authorities at the time, but as
we have seen so many times before, the
information was withheld, until now!
But why release this information now,
after keeping it secret for almost 19 years?
It seems hard to believe that the increase
in sightings recently, together with a more
relaxed stance by the UK and US on revealing
previously secret UFO information, not to
mention the Vatican's changed views on alien
life, is all a coincidence. What is going on?
Are we (the public) being prepared for
alien contact in the very near future, or is this, as
some people believe, the first step in a "fake"
alien visit, designed to trick the public into
accepting new conditions and control?
The release of the declassified files
confirm that the authorities chose to keep
important information from us (for a very long
time) and it is only natural that many people
will question their motives for allowing us to
see this now. I don't know about others, but I'm
always suspicious of governments who
"volunteer" certain information, yet refuse to
release details in other areas (like the JFK
assassination or 9/11). []

INTELLIGENCE officers scoured
hundreds of UFO sighting reports in the 1980s
and 1990s looking for top-secret American
stealth-plane projects, newly released files have
shown.
At the end of the cold war, the Ministry
of Defence was worried that America was
developing mysterious planes but not telling its
closest ally. Staff at department DI55 of the
Defence Intelligence Staff logged and
investigated hundreds of sightings by pilots, air-
traffic controllers and private individuals who
believed they had seen an alien presence.
“The MoD did not believe Britain was
being visited by aliens but these files show they
were obsessed with the fear that our closest ally
was developing spy planes and keeping them
secret from us,” said David Clarke, a lecturer at
Sheffield Hallam University, and UFO
specialist at the National Archives (which today
releases hundreds of official UFO files on its
website).
In one incident logged in 1989, an oil-
rig worker trained in aircraft observation saw a
“perfect black triangle” escorted by two
American fighters. An official noted: “Attention
is now focusing on this, despite a recent US Air
Force ‘denial briefing’. This is bound to prompt
parliamentary interest.” In 1990, the crews of
six RAF Tornado jets flying over Germany
reported seeing a UFO. Staff at RAF West
Drayton, where many sightings were initially
collated, noted that the pilots had reported the
“aerial phenomenon” overtaking them, and
said: “Possibly idented [identified] as a stealth
aircraft.”
In another 1990 incident, the MoD
believed two men had had a chance sighting of
a spy-plane called Aurora, thought to be in
development by the Americans. They reported a
diamond-shaped UFO above the A9 at Calvine
near Pitlochry, Perthshire.
The intelligence task sheet notes:
“Sensitivity of material suggests very special
handling . . . minimum handling by listed
personnel.” The files, the latest in a series of
UFO reports being released by the MoD, also
settle a long-standing UFO conspiracy theory –
the death of American fighter pilot Captain
William Schaffner during an exercise over the
North Sea in 1970. To the distress of his family,
it has been claimed by some that officials
covered up a sinister incident possibly involving
a UFO.
The files include the RAF’s official
inquiry into the crash, which concluded
Schaffner’s Lightning fighter had brushed the
sea during a delicate, low-speed manoeuvre.
When he tried to eject, the cockpit
canopy remained stuck because of poor
maintenance, and Schaffner is believed to have
drowned.
The vast majority of the files record
calls from the public reporting various cigar-
shaped objects, mysterious lights and saucer-
shaped craft.
In 1989, RAF Wattisham in Suffolk was
phoned by a “distressed female” who described
being engaged in conversation by an alien with
a Scandinavian accent while walking her dog.
The alien then departed in his spaceship.
The same year, the RAF was told of a
large flying object seen approaching “from
Filton airport” by a “pleasant lady” from her
sofa in Bristol. It had an object on top “like a
teapot lid”.
In 1992, a secret memo reported
nocturnal sightings in the eastern suburbs of
London of “a bright cigar-shaped object,
moving very slowly and making little or no
sound”.
An intelligence analyst recorded that the
craft was “almost certainly a brightly
illuminated airship advertising the new Ford
Mondeo”.

'UFO' blip leaves
airport officials foxed

KOLKATA: An unidentified flying
object blipped on the city radar in the wee hours
of Thursday, a little after mysterious objects
were photograph-ed hovering in the London
sky. The blip that lasted for 15 minutes on the
Bay of Bengal left airport and IAF officials
foxed. While some suspect an unscheduled
aircraft strayed into Indian airspace, others
termed it a UFO. The Directo-rate General of
Civil Aviation has ordered an investigation.
The unidentified aircraft or object was
spotted on the airport radar at 3.45 am on Th-
ursday. Sources said there was only a Cathay
Pacific overfli-ght scheduled for the time and in
that direction. “But the fli-ght showed a
separate blip. What’s more, we had
communication problems with the Ca-thay
Pacific pilot during the time the mystery blip
was on screen,” said an air controller.
IAF clarified that it had no exercise
scheduled over the Bay of Bengal at that hour,
and that none of its aircraft in the region were
airborne then.Though the blip may have been
due to either a snag in the 11-year-old radar or
the reflection of moonlight from a school of
fish, what worries security agencies is the
possibility of unauthorized aircraft entering
Kolkata region. On December 17, 1995, a
Latvia-registered AN-26 aircraft had entered
India undetected and dropped arms in Purulia.
“If a foreign aircraft had ventured into
Indian airspace, it is IAF’s role to scramble and
counter it,” an AAI official said. The London
sighting on Thursday has hyped interest in the
Kolkata UFO. Given the 5.5-hour time zone
difference between India and UK and the 11-
hour flight time, science fiction buffs drew a
link between London’s ‘flying saucers’ and the
mystery blip at the airport. []
UFO enthusiasts may
sue NASA for fraud
The U.S. space agency NASA may want
to brace itself for a flood of lawsuits in small
claims courts. The idea was floated at the recent

International UFO Congress and supporters will
again promote it at the X-Conference next
month.
Small claims courts, similar to the ones
popularized on television shows like the
People’s Court, are usually the domain of
neighbor disputes over minor property issues.
Citizens can file suit against another person,
business, government, or other entity for an
amount not to exceed hundreds or thousands of
dollars, depending on the state or county statute.
Attorneys are not allowed for either the plaintiff
or defendant.
So what beef do UFO hunters have with
NASA? They claim that the space agency is
committing fraud by altering or destroying
photographic evidence it has of signs of life in
other planetary systems. Part of NASA’s official
mission is to “Look for signs of life in other
planetary systems” and the agency receives over
$17 billion a year in taxpayer funding to
accomplish that mission. Supporters of the
small claims idea say that this is “waste, fraud
and abuse” because it keeps asking for the
money every year while “pretending” that it
hasn’t found anything.
Jeff Peckman, of the Denver UFO
Examiner, explained the reasoning using his
hometown as an example:
…the portion of NASA funding coming from
Denver taxpayers amounts to over $30 million
each year. That might seem small compared to
the Federal budget and even the Denver city
budget. But it’s almost daily news that city
budgets like Denver are cutting $1 million here
and there from programs to help the homeless,
children, people with special needs, law
enforcement and more.
NASA’s bloated and wasteful budget
could be better spent locally to help individuals
and communities. The alleged fraud NASA has
engaged in by doctoring or destroying UFO
photos is just a small piece of the bigger picture.
But it’s a piece that citizens can use to get at
least one government agency into the light of
closer public scrutiny.
The claim that NASA is hiding the truth
about aliens isn’t just an idea of sci-fi fans who
emerge from their mother’s basement just once
a year for gatherings of like-minded fanatics. A
77-year-old former NASA astronaut, Dr. Edgar
Mitchell, who was a crewmember of the Apollo
14 mission, says he knows that NASA is well
aware of visits to earth by “little people who
look strange to us.”
NASA’s response was not surprisingly
concise and authoritative: “NASA does not
track UFOs. NASA is not involved in any sort
of cover up about alien life on this planet or
anywhere in the universe. Dr. Mitchell is a great
American, but we do not share his opinions on
this issue.” []

The Majestic Theatre is a breeding
ground of ghost stories, making it a popular stop
each October for the League of Women Voters
ghost walk. Those stories and urban legends
attracted Parks Paranormal Research and
Investigation to make its rounds late Saturday
night.
Group founder Neal Parks has been
chomping at the bit for a chance to investigate
the theater since his own ghostly encounter in a
theater bathroom more than a decade ago. Neal
had gone to the restroom and saw a man
cleaning the floor, but no water splashed, there
was no bucket and the man did not respond to
Neal. In the balcony, he watched as the man
disappeared through a door.
Kevin Coleman, local history buff who
leads the ghost walk, chaperoned the group and
provided a little concrete history of the theater.
Although Coleman classifies himself as having
a healthy skepticism about ghosts, he wanted to
help promote the Majestic.
"I do my best to promote local culture,
tourism and history," he said.
As the three-hour investigation got
underway, the group of 13 bowed their heads as
Neal said a prayer of guidance, asking to keep
dark forces and presences away during the
night. Many in the group had connections to the
theater, which was built in 1853 after the fire of
1852 destroyed a fourth of town.
Sara McMain spent time performing at
the Majestic for four years and recounted
having seen mysterious blood in the boiler room
after being locked in there as a prank.
"I've always just kind of had an eerie
feeling being here. I never wanted to be alone in
the Majestic," she said.
Although some of the eerinees of the
theater revolves around the time of Camp
Sherman when it was thought the Majestic was
used as a temporary morgue, Coleman said the
story has been exaggerated. One of those
exaggerations was the embalming fluid
supposedly was dumped into the alley behind
the theatre. Research has shown there was a
sewage system in place and was likely where
fluids were disposed, Coleman said.
Armed with various pieces of equipment
popular in the paranormal investigation field,
such as EMF readers that detect electromagnetic
fields and dowsing rods once used more to
detect underground wells than ghostly energy,
and plenty of digital cameras, the group
embarked on a journey of the facility.
In some areas, such as the stage and
ballroom, the group reported capturing "orbs" in
pictures, and they also commented on the dust
in the theater after turning off the lights and
looking around with their flashlights. While
many in the paranormal field look at most orbs
as signs of spirits, many times they are dust
particles or even backscatter due to the size
limitations of the modern compact and ultra-

Bigfoot research group reported finding
a handprint that “looked like a huge gorilla
paw” during a recent expedition on Sand
Mountain.
“It would’ve made two of my hands,”
said Hawk Spearman, a founder of the Alabama
chapter of the Elusive Primates of North
America, or EPNA.
Spearman said the find was the first
handprint he has discovered in more than a
decade of research, although he has found
footprints in the past.
“We were pleased with what we did
find,” he said.
From Feb. 20-22, Spearman said the
group explored a heavily wooded area about 15
miles from U.S. 431 and the Albertville and
Boaz area. Spearman declined to release the
exact location because he said the property
owners did not want media attention.
Spearman said the group heard a number
of vocalizations during the expedition.
“One guy said it was like sleeping in a

a really mad cow vocal and then what sounded
like a bear vocal,” Spearman said.
When the bear vocal drew closer,
Spearman said, “All of a sudden we heard this
vocal, like six deep, long, guttural growls. We
know we upset what was there. We didn’t
physically see anything.
“We did get vocalizations from that area
in January as well, but we were unable to
identify them. Lo and behold, we were watching
Animal Planet and heard a similar vocal. An
expert from Texas A&M University said it was
an unknown primate with human texture
vocalization.”
Spearman said a former game warden
from Pennsylvania accompanied the group and
noted signs of a bear or a big cat in the area.
EPNA’s next meeting is Saturday from
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Oneonta Public Library,
where the Alabama chapter has been meeting
for the past year.
Spearman said a group called the
American Primate Research Organization, or
APRO, from Cullman is expected to attend. He
said EPNA plans to merge with APRO in the
next few weeks.

The Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot and
Mongolian Death Worms may just be flights of
fancy for some, but for others they require
serious scientific investigation.
Cryptozoology is the search for hidden
animals. At one end of the spectrum it might
mean hunting for a new species of bat, and at
the other it might mean globetrotting to find
Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster.
Richard Freeman and Jonathan Downes
are two men who have dedicated their lives to
finding them.
Their latest trip had Mr Freeman
searching for Russia's equivalent of Big Foot.
And while there is no solid evidence of
its existence, the team has managed to collect
eyewitness testimony.
"One farmer who said one of these large
creatures had killed his dog with a club," Mr
Freeman said. "It just walked non-chalantly into
his house and picked up a large Bulgarian
cheese. What it wanted with the cheese we don't
know. It looks and tastes like rubber."
The passion for cryptozoology caught
both men at an early age. For Mrr Downes it
was when he was just seven-years-old.
"It blew me away," he says. "I already
liked animals and to think there were monsters
in Loch Ness, it was one of the big three
epiphanies of my life. The other was when I
learnt boys were different to girls, and the other
when I heard the Sex Pistols."
Some of Earth's contemporary creatures
such as Big Foot or the Almasty are too big for
many to swallow - there is simply not enough
evidence.
But for Mr Freeman, Mr Downes and
many others, they live for this stuff.
In Mr Freeman's case, he reckons that he
almost had an encounter with an Almasty at
2:30am in a small, secluded Russian cabin.

coming world leader known as the "Antichrist."
Revelations of the Antichrist seem to be coming
frequently. When U.N. Secretary-general Kofi
Annan tells the World Economic Forum that
globalization is the best hope to solve the
world's problems, when the forum floats the
idea of a "united nations of major religions,"
when privacy is sacrificed to security, the news
headlines are listed on the prophecy websites as
signs that the Antichrist is busy about his
business.

The Book of Revelation declares,

The Book of Revelation is God's Word to us,
packed with prophecy that will be fulfilled in
the End Times. Many declare that the End
Times have already begun. A significant
prophecy was fulfilled when the Jews
reestablished their homeland in 1948.
Thereafter, another tick on the End Times
"prophecy clock" occurred when the Jews
retook Jerusalem in 1967. Do we know when
the end will come? No. However, we do know

The Skeptic’s Dictionary
Doomsday is the day the world as we
know it ends. It is a day of colossal catastrophe,
devastating destruction, extinction, and
annihilation. A doomsday cult is a group of
people led by a charismatic character who has
convinced them that the end is near. A
doomsayer is somebody for whom the signs of
catastrophe and imminent calamity are
ubiquitous.
Some associate doomsday with the end
of the universe and a day of judgment by some
mighty being who dwells outside of the
universe and occupies no space. The good will
be rewarded for being good and the evil will be
punished for being evil. Since most people are a
mixture of both, no matter how you define these
terms, it could get messy. The religious
doomsayers usually refer to a sacred book that
contains cryptic prophecies about the end of the
world. Various books of the Bible, for example,
have been sources of end-times speculation for
as long as these books have been around.
Some doomsayers, however, are a bit
more parochial and associate doomsday with
massive destruction only in their little part of
the world.
Some of the most active doomsayers of
our time are followers of the Abrahamic
religions and believe that prior to judgment day
there will be a great battle. Many Christians
believe the final war will occur at Armageddon
between the forces of good, led by God, and the
forces of evil, led by Satan. It is likely that no
spectators will be allowed at Armageddon (so
you better pick your side now), which is said to
be located in modern Israel. How billions of
people will fit into this tiny space is a mystery
that I'm sure theologians have worked out to the
satisfaction of their undemanding clients.
Doomsday has been predicted many
times by many prophets. Obviously, so far
they've all been wrong, which lowers the odds
that any given prophecy that the world will end
on some specific date will come true. Some, like
the Jehovah's Witnesses, have been wrong so
many times that they've quit making specific
predictions, but they're still warning us that the
end is near. Not to worry; there are plenty of
others who continue to howl that the end is near.
A recent example is the Strong City cult led by
Michael Travesser (aka Wayne Bent), who
claims he is the messiah and predicted the world
would end at midnight on 31 October 2007.
Not all those who claim to know when
the end will come are motivated by supernatural
signs, however. Some predict massive
destruction will come to Earth when the planets
align in a certain way. 5 February 1962 was
such a day and seers such as Jeanne Dixon
predicted the end of the world would occur
then.* 10 March 1982 was supposed to be a day
of devastating earthquakes, according to John
Gribbin and Stephen Plagemann in The Jupiter
Effect. Another day for planetary alignment and
predicted mass destruction on Earth was 5 May
2000.* Richard Noone took advantage of
people's fears to exploit that date in his book
5/5/2000 Ice: the Ultimate Disaster.
Doomsday cults have also been
associated with UFOs and aliens who are to take
followers to another planet while Earth is
destroyed. In the 1950s, Marian Keech led such
a cult. When the world didn't end and their
space ship didn't arrive to take them away,
Keech told her followers that their faith had
saved both them and the world. Nice touch. Not
all doomsday cults end so sweetly, however. In
1997, 39 members of a UFO cult known as
"Heaven's Gate" committed suicide as a
condition for preparing themselves for transport
on a space-alien craft to another world.
David Morrison, Senior Scientist of the
NASA Astrobiology Institute, has been
responding to those who fear the cries of the
doomsayers on the NASA-sponsored website
"Ask an Astrobiologist." He fields queries such
as the following:
Q. Is there a planet or brown dwarf called
Nibiru or Eris that is approaching the Earth and
threatening our planet with widespread
destruction?
A. No: Nibiru and other stories about wayward
planets are an Internet hoax. There is no factual
basis for these claims, and most of them (such
as that Nibiru has been hiding behind the Sun or
that it will be visible to the naked eye from the
southern hemisphere next year) are ludicrous.
Eris is real, but it is a dwarf planet similar to
Pluto that will remain in the outer solar system;
the closest it can come to Earth is about 4
billion miles.
The Niburu hoax has been linked by
some doomsayers with the Old Testament (and
they have photos to prove it!) and by others with
the belief that the ancient Maya predicted that
the world will end in 2012. The Maya, however,
knew as little about our planet's future demise as
Gordon-Michael Scallion, St. Malachy, Edgar
Cayce, Zecharia Sitchin,or Nostradamus, all of
whom falsely predicted colossal catastrophes
for our planet. The world is no more likely to
end when the Mayan calendar ends than it is
likely to end when a modern calendar hits 31
December.
Every time a new prediction of the end
is made, numbers of people fall in line and are
oddly filled with joy at the thought of the
fearsome events to come. As Morrison notes,
some people want the world to end and they
"are upset to be told that this catastrophe will
not happen" (Morrison 2008). This joy at the
thought of the world ending is evident in the
youthful enthusiasm for the event exhibited by
Strong City members and in the partying that
went on by the followers of Joseph Kibweteere
in Uganda before they were burned to death
after the world failed to end as predicted on the
eve of the year 2000. Similar jubilation mixed
with fear was seen in medieval Europe as the
year 1000 approached. Some Christians, called
millenarians, are particularly drawn to round
numbers in the thousands based on an arbitrary
0 starting point. They make some weird
associations:
Sometimes the links to the temporal
world can be tortuous to say the least. A
common theme on the fringes of Christian
millenarianism is a revived Roman Empire led
by the Antichrist and consisting of 10 European
nations. The theme is drawn out from the
description of a beast with 10 horns in the book
of Revelation.*
There is a story, perhaps apocryphal,
that the great scientists Isaac Newton (1643-
1727) and Robert Boyle (1627-1691) belonged
to different Bible-reading groups while both
resided in London. At one end of town, Newton
was trying to calculate the exact moment of
creation, while at the other end of town Boyle
and his group were working on calculating the
exact day the world would end. The story can't
be true, some think, because Newton liked to
work alone, or rather nobody liked to work with
him. I don't know if the story is true, but it
illustrates a universal trait about human beings:
a fascination with our origins and our ultimate
demise. By the way, the universe was created at
midnight on 23 October 4004 BCE* and will
end on 23 October 1996.* Bishop Ussher
calculated that Adam and Eve were driven from
Paradise on 10 November 4004 BCE, only a
couple of weeks after being created. You don't
believe it? Then, you probably didn't see the
world end in 1996.
Science and Superstition
Until recently, if we wanted to explain
our origin or our ultimate demise, we were
restricted to creating myths about the beginning
and end of our species. For thousands of years,
we could only guess at where we came from and
where we were going to end up. "For 160,00
years, superstition held Homo sapiens captive,"
as Bob Park puts it.* Science has emerged only
in the last few hundred years. Now, thanks to
Charles Darwin and others we have a pretty
good idea of where we came from. Thanks to
many physicists and astronomers, we have a
pretty good idea of how it's probably going to
end. Superstitious myths about our origins and
ultimate demise still abound among the
religious and anti-scientific secularists, but they
do little damage to the progress of science.
Those doing science either reject the religious
myths of our ancestral storytellers as products
of creative minds that tried to understand the
universe using little more than their
imaginations and the feedback they got from
equally ignorant folks sitting around a campfire,
or they have figured out a way to interpret the
myths to make them seem compatible with
modern science. Those who attempt to force
modern science into the mold of their religious
myths are not doing science and are little more
than a constant nuisance.
