Effective Communication Skills: One of the Principles of Classroom Teaching. Communication is a vital part of the teaching-learning process. As a manager of the learning situation and facilitation, teacher should be able to communicate effectively with the students. In general, communication means the process of delivering information from one individual to the other listeners. The writer of The Conceptual Framework Growing Teachers One Branch at a Time, had laid down 9 principles for teachers as guidance for an effective classroom teaching. One of the principles is teacher must possess good communication skills. The writer also placed his strong view in the article where he stated that teachers must be effective communicators in the classroom, he or she must be able to understand how pupils process information and teachers must also be able to communicate information accurately in order to garner support and maintain respect from the pupils. Based on the above article, I will focus my review on one of the principles, which is the principle on teachers communication skills for effective classroom teachinglearning process. Haberman, 1995, stated his opinion that ..teachers must be accurate models of effective communication skills and teachers themselves must read often, write well, speak articulately and listen accurately . According to Haberman, teacher must also be able to deliver information effectively, accurately and it is essential for them to know the rules that guide the way people communicate. Therefore, it is essential for teachers to be competent communicator in the classroom in order to help foster understanding among pupils of the content being taught. Furthermore, The Senate ad hoc Committee on Teaching Quality, Effectiveness and Evaluation (1998/99), The University of British Columbia , also had developed a set of principles in attaining the highest standards of teaching. One of the principle stressed that teachers must communicate and interact effectively with students. Teachers must be able to express goals, deliver intended learning outcomes and expectations clearly to the students. They also should improve learners communication and quantitative skills through meaningful learning engagement. Pertaining to the principle discussed above by a few experts, I agree that one of the qualities that a teacher should possess is to be an effective communicator in the

classroom during the teaching-learning process. This quality is very important because teacher constantly communicates as they interact with the pupils. As an educator, facilitator and motivator, a teacher must be able to give clear instructions, asks clear questions, provide accurate explanations and praising the pupils in a proper manner and language. Therefore, he or she must make sure that the language used must be clear, precise and simple enough for the pupils to understand. According to Nesamalar Chitravelu in the ELT Methodology: Principles and Practices; a successful lesson depends on the teachers communication skills in getting the pupils interests and involvements. (Nesarmalar Chitravelu: 280) On the other aspects, a teacher also must develop and enhance his or her communication skills because he or she will not only communicate with the pupils but has to liaise directly with parents, administrators as well as the community. Additionally, teacher who delivered inaccurate information will lead to misconception and confusion among the pupils, show bad impression to the school board, parents and community as a whole. When such situation happens in the classroom, this will give negative impact to the pupils and will affect the overall pupils understanding of the content being taught or information delivered to them. As an educator, a teacher must foster the pupils ability to communicate better and facilitate them on how to deliver accurate information effectively. I believe that to be a good classroom manager, a teacher must achieve the highest standard of teaching and one of the important criteria of an efficient teacher is to drill communication skills up to its maximum level. I think this principle is very important for teaching practices as it covers most of the teaching-learning process. As a conclusion, to be an effective teacher and educator, one must possess excellent communication skills and to be knowledgeable teacher, to be able to stand as the role model to the pupils where the teacher could speak articulately, pronounce clearly and deliver information effectively and accurately.
