g START FUNCTION 1. General

On models without the smart entry and start system, operation is possible when the ignition key is inserted into the key cylinder and turned to switch the ignition switch from the LOCK position to the ACC, ON or START position. On models with the smart entry and start system, operation is possible simply by pressing the push-type engine switch while carrying the key. Each time the engine switch is pressed, the main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly) turns the ACC, IG1, IG2 or ST CUT relays on or off to switch the power source mode in the order of off, on (ACC), on (IG), and off. This function has different power source mode patterns that are selected based on the brake pedal condition and shift lever position. For details, see page NF-184. Along with the adoption of the start function, an engine cranking hold function is used.

6. Construction and Operation

Engine Switch The engine switch consists of a momentary type switch, a backlighting LED, 2 color (amber, green) LEDs, and transponder key amplifier. The amber and green LEDs are used for the indicator light. The driver can check the present power source mode and whether the engine can start or not in accordance with the illumination state of the indicator light. When the main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly) detects an abnormality in the start system while the engine is running, it makes the amber indicator light flash. If the engine is stopped in this state, it might not be possible to restart it.

Service Tip The main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly) constantly stores the present power source mode in its memory. Therefore, if the power to the main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly) is interrupted due to something such as the removal of the battery, the main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly) restores the power source mode after the battery is reconnected. For this reason, if the battery is removed when the engine switch is in a state other than off, the power will be restored to the vehicle at the same time the power is restored to the main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly) (by reconnecting the battery). Therefore, before removing or disconnecting the battery, make sure to turn the engine switch off.

NEW FEATURES SMART ENTRY AND START SYSTEM Steering Lock System

183

Along with the use of the smart entry and start system, a steering lock system which uses a lock/unlock motor to lock and unlock the steering wheel is used. This system mainly consists of the steering lock assembly, main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly), certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) and immobiliser code ECU. The steering lock ECU is integrated in the steering lock assembly, and it controls the operation of the lock bar in the steering lock assembly through its control of the lock/unlock motor. The steering lock ECU detects the position (lock/unlock) of the lock bar and transmits this information to the main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly) and certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly). In this system, the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) determines whether to lock or unlock the steering wheel based on communication with the main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly). Then, the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) sends the lock or unlock command signal to the steering lock ECU through the immobiliser code ECU. Upon receiving the signal, the steering lock ECU operates the lock/unlock motor to lock or unlock the steering wheel. 4System Diagram3

Service Tip It is not possible to replace only the steering lock ECU in the steering lock assembly. Therefore, if a malfunction occurs in the ECU, the entire steering lock assembly must be replaced. After a discharged battery is recharged, the engine may not start because the steering lock ECU does not correctly detect the lock bar position. When this happens, turn off all power in the vehicle (power source mode is off), open and close the doors, and then attempt to start the engine again.

7. Start Function Operation

General When the driver enters the vehicle while carrying the key and the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) recognizes the ID code of the key, the main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly) authorizes the operation of the engine switch. As a result, the power source mode changes to the mode selected by operating the engine switch. The start function has different power source mode patterns to suit the brake pedal conditions and shift lever positions.
Pattern A [See page NF-186] B [See page NF-189] C [See page NF-191] D [See page NF-191] E [See page NF-191] Brake Pedal Depressed Shift Lever P or N P Except P Except P Power Source Mode Pattern When the engine switch is pressed once. Off Engine Start Each time the engine switch is pressed. Off on (ACC) on (IG) off Each time the engine switch is pressed. Off on (ACC) on (IG) on (ACC) When the power source is on (IG). On (IG) (engine is started or not started) on (ACC) When the power source is on (IG). On (IG) (engine is started or not started) off

Not Depressed

After approximately 1 hour elapses with the engine switch on (ACC), the main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly) will automatically change to power source mode to off. When the key battery is low, the start function can be made to operate by holding the mark of the key against the engine switch. For details, see page NF-192. The tables on the next page show the transition of the power source modes.

NOTE: Normally, the operation of the engine switch is disabled while the vehicle is being driven. However, if the engine must be stopped in an emergency while the vehicle is in motion, the driver can press the engine switch for approximately 3 seconds or more to stop the engine. If no signals are transmitted to the main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly) due to a malfunction in the stop light switch system, the engine will not start even if the driver presses the engine switch while depressing the brake pedal. In this case, the driver can start the engine performing the following 2 steps: 1) Press the engine switch to turn the power source mode from off to on (ACC), and 2) press the engine switch again and hold it for 15 seconds or more. The above two steps must be applied only in emergency situations. Under normal conditions, the engine must not be stopped by pressing the engine switch during driving or started without depressing the brake pedal when the shift lever is in any position other than P or N.

Step a) System Operation The driver enters the vehicle while carrying the key.

186

b)

When the driver presses the engine switch once with the following conditions satisfied, the main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly) recognizes the engine switch signal and transmits the key certification request signal to the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly). Shift lever is in P or N. Brake pedal is depressed. Power source mode is off. The certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) receives the key certification request signal and transmits a request signal to the front/rear indoor electrical key oscillators. These oscillators then transmit the request signal to the key. The main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly) turns on the green indicator light of the engine switch. The moment the key receives the request signal, it transmits an ID code that includes the response code to the door control receiver. The door control receiver receives this code and transmits it to the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly). The certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) judges and certifies the ID code, and transmits a key certification OK signal to the main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly). After receiving the key certification OK signal, the main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly) turns on the ACC relay.

Step i) System Operation

187

The main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly) turns on the ACC relay, and then turns on the IG1 and IG2 relays. The certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) checks that the power source mode has switched from off to on (IG), and transmits a steering unlock request signal to the main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly) and immobiliser code ECU. The main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly) receives this signal and supplies power to the steering lock ECU. The steering lock ECU receives the steering unlock request signal via the immobiliser code ECU, and releases the steering lock. After checking the steering unlock condition, the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) transmits an engine immobiliser unset request signal to the immobiliser code ECU. The immobiliser code ECU certifies the engine immobiliser unset signal of the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly), transmits the engine immobiliser unset request signal to the ECM, and the ECM disables the engine immobiliser.

Step o) p) q) System Operation

188

After checking the steering is unlocked, the main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly) transmits a starter request (STSW) signal to the ECM. The ECM outputs an ST relay (STAR) signal, and actuates the starter. If the ST relay (STAR) signal cannot be output because the power supplied to the ECM is low, the main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly) outputs the ST relay (STAR) signal instead to help actuate the starter. When the ECM judges from the engine speed signal that engine start is completed, it stops the ST relay (STAR) signal, and stops the starter. The main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly) checks that engine start is completed, and turns off the indicator light of the engine switch.

NEW FEATURES SMART ENTRY AND START SYSTEM When key battery is low
Step a) b) c) d) e) f) System Operation

192

To operate the start system when the key battery is low, hold the mark of the key against the engine switch while depressing the brake pedal. The main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly) transmits a key certification request signal to the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly). The certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) does not receive an ID code response from the door control receiver, so it actuates the transponder key amplifier built into the engine switch. The transponder key amplifier outputs an engine immobiliser radio wave to the key. The key receives the radio wave, and returns a radio wave response to the transponder key amplifier. The transponder key amplifier combines the key ID codes with the radio wave response, and transmits it to the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly). The certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) judges and verifies the ID code, and transmits a key certification OK signal to the main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly). The buzzer in the combination meter assembly sounds at the same time. After the buzzer sounds, if the engine switch is pressed within 5 seconds while the brake pedal is depressed, the power source mode switches to start as in the normal condition. After the buzzer sounds, if the engine switch is pressed within 5 seconds while the brake pedal is not depressed, the power source mode switches to on (ACC) or on (IG) as in the normal condition.

8. Diagnosis
The main body ECU (instrument panel junction block assembly) can detect malfunctions in the start function when the power source mode is on (IG). When the ECU detects a malfunction, the amber indicator light of the engine switch flashes to warn the driver. At the same time, the ECU stores a 5-digit Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) in memory. The indicator light warning continues for 15 seconds even when the power source mode is switched to off. The DTCs can be read by connecting an intelligent tester to the DLC3. The start function may not operate again if a malfunction occurs. For details, see the Repair Manual.

Oscillator Each oscillator transmits the request signal received from the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly), and forms a key actuation area to detect the presence of a key. The actuation area formed by the door electrical key oscillator and outside electrical key oscillator are approximately 0.7 to 1.0 m (2.3 to 3.3 ft.) from the outside door handle of the doors, or the center of the rear bumper. The actuation area of the each door electrical key oscillator is formed by transmitting a request signal every 0.25 second while the engine switch is off and each door is locked. In this way it detects the proximity of a key. During entry lock, the actuation area is formed with the lock switch on. The actuation area of the front/rear indoor electrical key oscillators is formed when the driver door is opened or closed, the engine switch is pressed, a warning is activated, or the lock switch is on. The actuation area of the outside electrical key oscillator is formed when the luggage compartment door open switch is on. The actuation area of the luggage electrical key oscillator is formed when the luggage compartment door is closed or the luggage compartment door open switch is pressed, and is formed twice until the key can be verified.

Function Outline This function is a convenient system for locking and unlocking all the doors, or luggage compartment door at a distance. The operation of this function in the smart entry and start system is the same as that in the wireless door lock control system. When a key is located the actuation area of a door electrical key oscillator, the interior light and engine switch illumination are turned on. When a key is located in the actuation area of the driver door electrical key oscillator, the doors will be unlocked with the touch of the driver door outside door handle. When a key is located in the actuation area of the door electrical key oscillator and the engine switch is off, all the doors will be locked by merely pressing the lock switch on the outside door handle. When a key is in the actuation area of the luggage compartment outside electrical key oscillator, the luggage compartment door opens by merely pressing the luggage compartment door open switch. Prevents the confinement of the key if the doors are locked while the key is still inside the vehicle. If the luggage compartment door is closed while the key is still in the luggage compartment, the warning buzzer sounds. The smart entry and start system causes the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) to sound the buzzer in the combination meter assembly and wireless door lock buzzer, and display the warning messages on multi-information display in order to alert the driver. This function extends the signal transmission (between the system and key) interval from 0.25 seconds to 0.75 seconds, or automatically deactivates the smart entry and start system in order to prevent the vehicle and/or key battery from being drained.

Luggage Compartment Pressing and holding the luggage compartment door open button of the key longer Door Open than 0.8 seconds opens the luggage compartment door. The hazard lights flash once when locking, and twice when unlocking, to inform that the operation has been completed. The wireless door lock buzzer sounds once when locking, and twice when unlocking, to inform that the operation has been completed. If none of the doors are opened within 30 seconds after they are unlocked by wireless door lock control, all the doors will be locked again automatically. If any door is open or ajar, pressing the lock button of the key causes the wireless door lock buzzer to sound for about 10 seconds. When all the doors are locked, pressing the unlock button on the key causes the interior lights to come on and stay on for 15 seconds.

4Reinstatement Conditions3 A wireless door lock control signal (lock, unlock or luggage compartment door open) is input and the key ID matches. A driver carries the key and pushes the lock switch of the outside door handle. A door is locked or unlocked by the mechanical key. 2) Key Battery and Vehicle Battery Saving Function In the smart entry and start system, if the key is constantly located within the vehicle exterior actuation areas of the door electrical key oscillator, the system maintains periodic communication with the key. Therefore, if the vehicle remains parked in that state for a long time, the key battery and the vehicle battery could be drained. For this reason, if this state continues longer than 10 minutes, the smart entry and start system automatically becomes deactivated. 4Reinstatement Conditions3 A wireless door lock control signal (lock, unlock or luggage compartment door open) is input and the key ID matches. A driver carries the key and pushes the lock switch of the outside door handle. A door is locked or unlocked by the mechanical key. Service Tip Leaving the key close to electrical appliances that emit radio waves could cause the key to accidentally respond, which could cause the key battery to become quickly depleted.
