REQUIREMENTS SOLICITATION FORM MINISTRY/ DEPARTMENT: Requ. Submission Date: Primary contact: E-mail/ Phone: MOH/KCH 30th July, 2013 Hospital Director nooralide@gmail.com -------Introduction, background and business context Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) is a referral hospital located in the central region of Malawi, specifically in Lilongwe District, the country's capital city. Opened in 1977 by the then Life President of the Republic of Malawi, the late Ngwazi Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda, and the hospital was meant to serve as a referral center for both the northern and central regions of Malawi. It also serves as a teaching hospital for Kamuzu College of Nursing (KCN), College of Medicine (COM) and Malawi College of Health Sciences (MCHS). KCH has a bed capacity of 1000 (though the actual number of patients always exceeds the number of beds) making it the second largest hospital in the country. KCH serves a population of about 5 million people and accepts referrals from all the surrounding District and Mission hospitals. Kamuzu Central Hospital, like all central hospitals in Malawi, was designed to provide specialist health services (Level II and Level III services). Statistics, however, shows that KCH mostly provides Level I hospital care and Primary Hospital Care (PHC) which should have been the responsibility of District Hospitals, Health Centers and below. This burden has negatively affected KCH from fulfilling the desired goal of providing tertiary level of patient care or referral services that will complement other levels of care provided by other healthcare facilities like district hospitals, community or rural hospitals and health centers located in the central region of Malawi. Like all Public Sector hospitals in Malawi, KCH is under centralized government control and receives most of its funding from the government with a fairly small portion of the revenue generated through user fees collected at the paying outpatient department and the paying inpatient wards. -------The Website Objectives To inform the public about services offered at KCH To educate the public on health issues To source internal and external support for KCH -------The Target Audience Everyone -------Technical Features and Anticipated Scope 1.
