Show the lyrics (translated Call Me Maybe on the LCD and ask them questions: Can someone read the lyrics? Who knows this song? Etc) Play the song and ask them what the themes and genre are.

Translation Activity : (40 min) Assigned pairs of students receive a set of lyrics, many song options, they can choose their own song if they get approval. Each pair has to translate a part of the song to French and answer questions (see handout La Musique et les Traductions). Before they begin, explain that lyrics cannot be translated word for word or the sense wont be preserved - Play translation video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMkJuDVJdTw).

After Translation Activity : (15 min) Whats up? - Class discussion: Students answer the question: What are your strategies to translate the lyrics from English to French? Music Activity Part 2 Differentiated Assignment Students will be given 1 full class to work on their assignment, either alone or in groups of 2-4, and then an additional 2 days to work at home before the assignment is due. Students will have a choice from a few format options (below) to answer one of these questions: Can you imagine the world without music? Why? Make a connection to music to one of your favourite hobbies. Assignment Options 1. Presentation: PowerPoint can be used 2.
