Help with a hard titration problem (Back-titration)? A 0.3240g sample of impure Na2CO3 was dissolved in 50.00mL of 0.1280M HCl.

The excess acid then requires 30.10mL of 0.1220M NaOH for complete neutralization. Calculate the % Na2CO3 (MM = 105.99) in the sample. If you guys want, you can just tell me what i need to do step by step and i'll be the one to do the calculations so i learn. 4 years ago Report Abuse MyAnswer... The NOT and WAS caps are just for emphasis; not being snooty. lol ----------------------Balanced Equation: Na2CO3 + 2HCl ---> 2NaCl + H2CO3 ----------------------First we must find the excess acid, which was titrated with NaOH, *** Important *** Titrated amounts are not part of the main reaction. ****************** In this case, the titrated acid is NOT part of the Na2CO3 / HCl reaction: 30.10 mL = 0.03010 L 0.03010 L NaOH solution x (0.1220 mol NaOH / 1 L NaOH solution) <--- from 0.1220M x (1 mol OH- / 1 mol NaOH) <--- the mol-mol relation of OH- to NaOH x (1 mol H+ / 1 mol OH-) <--- the mol-mol relation to bridge acid to base x (1 mol HCl / 1 mol H+) <--- the mol-mol relation of HCl to H+ x (1 L HCl solution / 0.1280 mol HCl) <--- from 0.1280M x (1000 mL / 1 L) <--- mL/L relation everything cancels except mL HCl solution ********* = 28.689 mL HCl solution NOT part of the Na2CO3 / HCl reaction

********* ----------------------The mL of HCl that WAS part of the Na2CO3 / HCl reaction = total mL HCl(aq) - mL HCl(aq) NOT part of reaction = 50.00mL - 28.689 mL ********* = 21.311 mL HCl solution WAS reacted with Na2CO3 ********* ----------------------Next we can find the g Na2CO3 from mL HCl solution reacted: 21.311 mL = 0.021311 L 0.021311 L HCl solution x (0.1280 mol HCl / 1 L HCl solution) <--- from 0.1280M x (1 mol Na2CO3 / 2 mol HCl) <--- from the balanced equation x (105.99 g Na2CO3 / 1 mol Na2CO3) <--- from MM = 105.99 everything cancels except g Na2CO3 ********* = 0.14456 g Na2CO3 formed ********* ----------------------% Na2CO3 = (g Na2CO3 formed / g sample) x 100 = (0.14456 g / 0.3240 g) x 100 = 44.62 % Na2CO3 (at 4 sig. figs.)
