1he oreground o this aerial photograph, taken prior to illing o the section o the Delaware and Raritan Canal in South 1renton in 193, is dotted with the bottle` kilns o the
Scammell China Company`s Lamberton \orks.` 1he pottery known as the Lamberton \orks traces its history back to 1881 when the irst kilns were erected on this 1hird Street site
by the 1renton China Company. 1he Maddock Pottery Company purchased the plant in 1893 and it was at this time that the name Lamberton \orks` was irst applied to the actory.
In 1923, the works were purchased by the Scammell China Company and were operated by that concern until its demise in 1954. During the Maddock and Scammell periods o owner-
ship, the plant was one o the country`s largest producers o chinaware or hotel and institutional use.

spanning the Assunpink Creek and the tracks o Amtrak`s Northeast Corridor. 1he new station had only just been completed when this photograph was taken. It replaced 1renton`s
Pennsylania Railroad Station which stood rom 1893 to 192. 1he enerable but decrepit station was razed ollowing the bankruptcy o the Pennsylania Railroad in 1968 and the
ailure o the successor company the Penn Central 1ransportation Company in 190. Also appearing in this image is the no longer existing Greenwood Aenue traic circle which
appears in the lower right hand corner o the image.

1his 1920`s aerial photograph shows the upscale 1renton neighborhood o liltonia during its earliest years. liltonia was deeloped by British born deeloper Samuel lilton who
purchased the tract o land on which the neighborhood now stands in 1923. lilton subdiided the property and established the community`s street network. Operating under the
name o the lilton Realty Company, lilton sold large lots to many o 1renton`s wealthier amilies who subsequently hired him or other contractors to erect ashionable homes on the
properties. 1his photograph shows the neighborhood prior to the construction o almost all o its homes and beore the growth o the trees that now shade its ully deeloped streets.

1aken in the late 1920`s, this photograph shows the shops o the American Bridge Company at the western terminus o Cass Street on the Delaware Rier. lormed by J. P. Morgan &
Co. in 1900 in order to consolidate the nation`s largest bridge manuacturing businesses, the American Bridge Company later became a diision o U.S. Steel. 1he company`s 1renton
Plant occupied the ormer location o the 1renton Iron \orks. lounded in 184, by the renowned industrialist and philanthropist, Peter Cooper, the 1renton Iron \orks was one o
the most important manuacturers o structural steel and railroad rails in the United States. 1oday, the 1renton 1hunder Minor League Baseball team plays in a stadium erected on the
site in the early 1990`s.

1aken in 1928, the oreground o this aerial iew o the city is dominated by the landscaped grounds o Mahlon Stacy Park. Most o the land or this rierront green space and
promenade was acquired in 1904 when the City o 1renton issued bonds to inance the purchase o the priately held rierront property between the State louse and Calhoun Street.
1wo years ater this picture was taken, the Soldiers` and Sailor` \ar Memorial, better known today as the 1renton \ar Memorial, was erected at the southern end o the park. Much o
Stacy Park was sacriiced to acilitate the construction o 1renton`s Last-\est lighway, now N.J. Route 29, in 1954-195.

1his historic aerial photograph shows the rierront o Lamberton in South 1renton as it appeared in 1928. 1he landscaped area at the right side o the image is Rieriew Cemetery
which was laid out in 1859 incorporating the location o a smaller 1
th
-century Quaker burial ground. 1he Cemetery stands on the site o a home ormerly occupied by Ann Saage, the
mistress o Bordentown resident Joseph Bonaparte, the ormer King o Spain and brother o Napoleon. 1he large industrial acility isible on the rierront at the let side o the image
was the Peoples Brewing Company. Located on the north side o Lalor Street, the brewery was operated under seeral dierent names oer the course o its history but is best known
or the manuacture o Champale, a popular sparkling malt beerage. Originally constructed in 1891, the plant was demolished in 1998.

1he 1renton-Morrisille 1oll Bridge, which carries U.S Route 1 oer the Delaware Rier, was erected in 1952. 1his historic image shows the piers or the new bridge during the initial
phases o construction looking rom Morrisille to 1renton. 1o the let and uprier rom the new bridge piers stands the Lower 1renton Bridge. 1his bridge, which bears the large
1renton Makes 1he \orld 1akes" slogan in huge illuminated letters, stands partially on stone piers that were originally constructed in 1806 to support the earliest bridge to span the
Delaware Rier between Pennsylania and New Jersey. 1o the right and downrier rom the 1oll Bridge piers, the photograph shows the great stone arched Pennsylania Railroad
Bridge. Constructed in 1908, the Railroad Bridge acilitates direct rail trael between New \ork City and Philadelphia along the present day Northeast Corridor.

1aken in the 1930`s, this image shows the New Jersey State lair in lamilton 1ownship. Although market airs were requently held in 1renton during the 18
th
-century and larger
agricultural airs were held in 1renton and lamilton in the 1850`s and 1860`s, the irst air on this site was held by the Inter-State lair Association in 1888. Oer 50,000 isitors at-
tended the 1888 air to see Annie Oakley and Pawnee Bill`s \ild \est Show. During the 1909 air, the \right Brothers were paid >10,000 to undertake ie exhibition lights in their
new airplane. In 1936, the lair Association sold the grounds to George A. lamid, a trained acrobat and circus proprietor who aterwards managed the air and oersaw horse and
automobile races on the grounds. NASCAR and Indy Car races were later held on the site and continued through the early 1980`s. 1he track was inally demolished in 1983. 1he
Grounds or Sculpture stand on part o the property today.

Depicting the heart o downtown 1renton as it appeared in 1925, this iew shows a city skyline dominated by two buildings, the 11-story Stacy-1rent lotel and the 14-story 1renton
1rust building. Standing on the southwest Corner o \illow and \est State Street, the 250 room Stacy-1rent lotel irst opened its doors in 1921 and was immediately the grandest
hotel in New Jersey`s Capital City. 1he 1renton 1rust building, standing on the northeast corner o \est State Street and Chancery Lane, would hae only just been completed when
this photograph was taken. Note that this image also shows the 1renton \ater Power at the lower right hand corner o the image. 1his canal had proided hydropower to many o
1renton`s19th-century actories but was illed in not long ater this photograph was taken.

Just to the right o center, this aerial iew shows the 1renton Battle Monument standing at the intersection o Broad and \arren Streets, the apex o historic 1renton. Originally
known as King and Queen Streets, these two 18
th
century roadways deined the City`s colonial street network. 1he 148 oot tall granite Doric column was designed by architect John l.
Duncan and was erected in 1891 to commemorate \ashington`s ictory at the lirst Battle o 1renton on January 26, 16. At the let side o the bottom o this photograph is the
Moorish reial style New Lincoln School. Built in 1924 during the era o segregated schools, the building sered as a ciic landmark or the city`s Arican-American community. 1he
school was integrated in 1946. 1oday the school is known as the Luis Munoz-Riera Middle School.

1his aerial photograph shows 1renton deep in the grip o winter. 1aken in lebruary o 2006, the snowy image depicts a city rierront dominated by highways, goernment oice
buildings and sprawling parking lots. 1his landscape o modern goernment replaced densely packed urban residential neighborhoods in the late 1960`s and early 190`s as urban
clearance eorts erased nearly all o 1renton`s Bloomsbury district which was once home to generations o working class 1rentonians who lied in small row houses ronting on no
longer existing streets between the Assunpink Creek and Bridge Street in South 1renton.

between \illow and Calhoun Streets. lrom right to

photograph shows the New Jersey State louse

plex including the New Jersey State Library, the
New Jersey State Museum and Planetarium, and

documents the demolition o the 1renton branch
o the Lit Brothers Department Store at the corner
o South Broad and lront Streets as part o the
Urban Renewal` eort that created modern day
Mill lill Park. Prior to its operation by Lit
Brothers, the commercial emporium was occupied
irst by Goldberg`s Department Store and later by
Swern`s Department Store.
