Tim and Dawn's main objective in their service in Malawi is to help the churches become
autonomous, self-governing churches that will need no missionary to function, This objective will be addressed in several ways. The women in Malawi have very little opportunity for education because they are not encouraged to go to school when they are young. In most cases, the women are responsible for taking care of the needs of the family and nothing more. Dawn hopes to spend much of her time teaching

No one would question the importance of the involvement of the Lord in reaching the lost. Without His help in this mission, all that we labor for is in vain. Tim and Dawn sincerely believe that with the proper prayer support in place, all other forms of support will follow. Second, they need your encouragement. Regardless of one's background, religion, or
educational level, it is difficult for anyone to
remove themselves from their own culture and enter

plans to teach the women Christian virtues as well as share with them the joy of life that comes through serving Christ. Tim's responsibility will be leadership training. Many of the men who are leading the churches in Malawi do so with a willing heart and a joyful spirit, but they lack true knowledge of the Scriptures. Therefore, the majority of Tim's time will be spent in leadership training classes and leadership seminars. This kind of training will help the people of Malawi to take a greater role in the governing of
their own churches and will allow Tin and Dawn to

it is important that the churches in the US be supportive to missionaries by encouragement. Writing letters, making phone calls, and sending care packages are all ways in which missionaries can be encouraged by their brothers and sisters. Lastly, Tim and Dawn need your financial support. They have dedicated theirlivesto reaching people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They are depending solely on the Lord and His Church to helpthem in accomplishing this task. Jameschapter two says that faith without action is dead.
Missionaries without support are useless. We urge all who see the need, please respond with your prayers, your encouragement, and your finances.

Tim and Dawn Yates

WHO Tim and Dawn Yates are both graduates of Johnson bible college with a degree in Bible and specialty in Missions Dawn is originally from Altoona, PA where she
was a member of the First Church of Christ of Altoona.

WHEN

After graduating from High school in 1989,

Dawn worked for a year. She entered a contest of the Pennsylvania Christian Teen Convention and she won a summer mission trip and went with Christ in Youth to the Dominican Republic. It was in the Dominican Republic that the Lord placed in Dawn's heart the desire to serve in a third world country as a missionary. She realized how fortunate she was to have such a vast opportunity to hear the Gospel of Hope, while others in the third world have very limited access to the Gospel. From this point in her life, the desire to return to the mission field grew stronger day by day. Therefore, in the fall of 1990, Dawn enrolled at JBC to,prepare
herself for full-time service.

WHERE Malawi is a small country in southeast Africa

with a land area roughly the size of the state of

Pennsylvania (approx. 46,000 sq. mi.)

With a population of 8.9 million, the population density is about 243 people per square mile,
compared to an advantage of 68 persons per square
mile in the US.

Tim is originally from Sullivan, IN where he attended the Dugger Church of Christ in Dugger, IN. He spent his senior year of high school in Louisville, Ky where he attended the Portland Avenue Church of Christ and graduated from Portland Christian High School in 1989. In the fall of 1989, he began his studies at David Lipscomb University and transferred to Johnson Bible College in the spring of 1990. Not long into the school year of 1990, Tim and Dawn met on the campus of JBC. They soon
discovered their common desire to serve the Lord
on the mission field.

The life expectancy of a male or female is 47 years, due in part to rampant disease as well as the general harsh conditions under which Malawians
must exist.

Tim went on a summer missions trip with Tccn

decision. At the invitation held at the end of the

commerical changes since the establishment of the new government and is, no doubt, continuing to change daily. As the social conditions change, so do the spiritual and physical needs of the people.
There are Christians in Malawi who are anxiously

awaiting the coming of a missionary.

In May of 1992, Dawn and Tim were married in Altoona, Pennsylvania. After a short honeymoon, they spent the summer working at Camp Christian in Bums, TN, where Tim was grounds keeper and Dawn was head cook. They returned to JBC in the fall where they began to prepare for a missions internship. In the summer of 1993, they spent 2 1/2 months in Malawi, Africa.

summer by Teen Missions, Tim went forward to dedicate himself to becoming a full-time missionary.

While in Malawi, Tim and Dawn experienced first-hand what full-time missionary work was like. Dawn taught all the women's classes during the week and Tim taught all of the men's classes as well as preaching every Sunday. It was this experience that led them to consider their role in reaching the people of Malawi. The entire summer was filled with the opportunity to learn and grow with the Malawian people. Half-way through their internship they decided to return to Malawi in full-time service after seeing the enormous need for trained leaders. Following graduation in May 1994, Tim and Dawn began to raise support for the work the Lord had prepared them for in Malawi.

going to the Mission field." David Eubanks, President of Johnson Bible College. "I commend Tim and Dawn to any churches and/or individuals who may consider becoming partners with them through prayer and financial support for their ministry in Malawi." Dean
Davis, Coordinator of Church Relations, JBC.

Lord willing, they hope to be on the field by May ofI995. With the help of the churches here in the US their goals will become a reality.

L-

To our brothers and sisters at JBC,

Dawn and I would just like to drop you a note about what's going on in our lives andwhat the future holds. As most ofyou know, we are planning on a third member ofthe Yates family in the beginning ofFebruary. We are excited about the gift that the Lord is giving us and the opportunity we have to bring up a child in the
Kingdom.

We are also looking forward to getting back to Malawi, where we spent the summer of 1993. It was a wonderful internship and we are in the process of raising full-time support to return indefinitely. We feel that theLord is calling us to full-time service as missionaries, and we feel the place in store for us is Malawi. We are asking those at Johnson who are ableto support us. Support, however, involves much more than just finances. There are actually three elements of support for a missionary. First is prayer. No missionary on earth candeny the need for prayer support from the church. Secondly is encouragement. Somany missionaries are in desperate need of encouragement from those who caneasily give

it Lastly is financial support. Just as nomissionary can deny the need for prayer
and encouragement, none can do his/herjob withoutthe finances needed. After five years at Johnson Bible College (two ofwhich while we were married), it is easy for us to understand that there arenot a lot ofwealthy people. It is difficult to make ends meet whether you are a faculty member, a staff member, or a student. But we know thatthere are many at Johnson who can support our ministry with one or more of these vital elements ofsupport. Ifyou are able to support our ministry in any ofthese ways, please talk to our forwarding agents, Ron and Karen Williams, or you can talk to one of us. We trust thatyou willbe in prayer for the needs of the mission and will seriously consider whether youcan be a part of the mission the Lord has given us to reach the people
of Malawi.

Thank you for your ministry and your efforts to becomeservants to Christ! May the Lord continue to blessyou in your ministry.
Through Christ Our Hope,
Tim and Dawn Yates

If you have not already heard, we are expecting our first child in February of
1995! We are not sure

whether it is a boy or girl, but we know it is coming.

This has an obvious

impact on our plans to return to Malawi. It is not, however, a drawback. We will simply move our target date from March 1st to May 23rd if all goes well. We are excited

glad the first three months are over, though. I'll never complain about having the flu again, that's for sure!! It was good to visit with my family a few weeks ago. It was also good to see everyone at the Altoona First Church of Christ. It is always so refreshing to spend time with the ones who raised you, and played such a big part in your life growing up. Obviously, I had to quit my job at UPS when we found out about my pregnancy.
