Adjustment of Status - A procedure allowing certain aliens already in the United States
to apply for Legal Permanent Resident Status.
Alien Smuggling/Human Smuggling - The illegal transport of an alien into the United
States knowingly, willingly, and for gain with the general knowledge, approval and
cooperation of the alien
Alien Trafficking/Human Trafficking - The illegal transport of an alien into the United
States knowingly, willingly, and for gain but by force or coercion for an illegal purpose.
Asylum - A status indicating the right to remain in the United States (and certain other
nations) due to a well-founded fear of persecution in another nation for various legal
reasons. Asylum is applied for within the United States or at a port-of-entry. A person
with this status is referred to as an asylee.

United States, including investigation, detention, and removal.
Biometric - Any specific and unique physical characteristic that can be used to identify
an individual. Common security features that rely upon biometrics are photographs,
fingerprints, hand geometry recognition, facial recognition, retina scans, iris scans, etc.
"BOLO" - Acronym for "Be On The Lookout". Often used to describe short-term local
lookout/watchlists at ports-of-entry and border patrol stations in the US.
Book - Usually used to describe the bound interior pages of a passport or other travel
document. Also used to describe a blank document.
Cachet'Stamp - Generally refers to an ink stamp (aka. "Wet Seal") that is placed on a
travel or identity document. "Cachet" is most often used in reference to entry stamps,
exit stamps, or issuing authority endorsements:
Crew Visa — D Class visa for air and sea crewmembers enabling them to join
vessels/aircraft and land in the United States from them.

Endpaper(s) - Usually used to describe the inside front and back covers of a passport or
other book-type travel document.
ENFORCE - Acronym for the "Enforcement Case Tracking System". ENFORCE is the
primary case management, case paperwork, and case tracking system for the former
Immigration and Naturalization Service. ENFORCE does not contain classified data.

Fugitive Ink - Ink that fades or smears when a solvent, heat, or other agent is applied to
it OR ink that is designed to slowly migrate into an underlying substrate. Passport
laminates often contain features printed in fugitive ink that will be absorbed by attached
passport photographs over a long period of time. Removal of the photograph will result
in loss of the feature.
Grommet - A two-piece metal or plastic ring for lining a small hole. The pieces snap
together in the hole and are used to fasten photos and other items to documents. Removal
of the grommet will usually destroy it and disturb the photograph or other attachment it
secures.
"Guest House" - Term often used by extremists to denote a safe house along a travel
route run by another extremist.
Hardstand - A remote airport arrival area not connected to a terminal. Egress from the
aircraft is done with a mobile lounge (aka~"Planemate") or portable staircase. These can
be quite distant from the designated arrival terminal.

ICAO - Acronym for the International Civil Aviation Organization. ICAO, among other
issues, determines international standards for travel documents, including the constitution
and layout of machine-readable zones.
Laminate - A transparent material covering. Laminates are used in travel and identity
documents to protect photographs and data from wear and alteration. The photo-
biographic pages of most passports are secured with some sort of laminate. Laminates
themselves can incorporate security features themselves, such as fugitive ink images.

Microline - Used to describe very small font that is visible only under magnification or a
line of printed text composed of it. Microlines are often found as a security feature to
deter counterfeiting or forgery, particularly for hand entered biographic data or
signatures.
Offset - A common and good-quality printing process that uses an inked rubber or
synthetic blanketed cylinder, which is often produced with the aid of a photo negative
(Photo Offset). Good-quality counterfeit documents will often be produced using offset,
as opposed to the cheaper but less effective alternative of laser/inkjet printing or copying.

OVI - Optical Variable Ink. Items printed with OVI will appear to change color
depending upon the angle that they are viewed from.
Parole - In US immigration law, parole status indicates that permission has been granted
for an individual to remain in the United States for a given period of time. Parole
functions as a "legal fiction", in that the individual, while in the United States, has never
made an "entry" and, as such, is not amenable to removal proceedings and may have their
parole revoked and be removed from the United States without a hearing or other due

process. Refugees, asylees, and individuals released on their own recognizance pending
removal proceedings are often paroled.
Pixellation - The breakdown of images printed with a color separation process (e.g.,
laser or inkjet) into small dots when viewed under magnification. This is one of the
easiest and most effective methods of counterfeit detection, as many counterfeits are
produced using laser or inkjet printers.
POE - An acronym for "port-of-entry". A POE is a legally designated entry point for
people and goods that is specifically identified as such within the Immigration and
Nationality Act (INA).
Planchette - Small disks, usually colored and made of paper, that are incorporated into
paper during its manufacture. Planchettes deter counterfeiting and mechanical alteration
of secure documents.
PNR/Passenger Name Record - PNRs are the basic individual passenger manifest and
information report for commercial carriers. They contain certain mandatory data fields
pertaining to reservation and travel data. A list ofPNRs is referred to as a flight manifest"
or passenger list.
"Prayer Page" - This term refers to the page of a passport that identifies the bearer as a
national of the issuing country and "requests and requires" the assistance of foreign
authorities in allowing the bearer to enter". A payer page is often in more than one
language and an excellent place to seek misspellings and text errors in suspected
counterfeit passports.

"Ramp Rat" - Airport slang for planeside employees, sometimes involved in smuggling.

Refuge - A status indicating the right to enter and remain in the United States (and
certain other nations) due to a well-founded fear of persecution in another nation for
various legal reasons. Refuge is applied for outside of the United States. A person with
this status is referred to as a refugee.
Religious Worker - hi the United States, a person entering on an R class visa to perform
religious work as clerics, advisors, etc.
Residency Papers/"Green Card" - Popular terms for the United States Immigrant Visa
and/or Form 1-551 Legal Permanent Resident Card.
A "Schengen" visa enables the bearer to enter one country in the "Schengen Zone" and
travel freely within the Schengen zone with little to no further inspection. Schengen
visas are usually obtained from the consulate covering an applicant's primary destination.
Security Fibers - Fibers, natural or synthetic, incorporated into paper or other substrate
at the time of manufacture as a security feature. These often fluoresce when exposed to
various wavelengths of ultra-violet light.

Student Visa (F and M Class Visas) - There are two types of US student visa. F visas
are for students attending virtually any type of school, M are for students attending
vocational schools with a work component (e.g., flight schools)
Teslin - A synthetic material used to create a secure substrate for many kinds of
documents, including one version of the United States non-immigrant visa. Teslin is
designed to stretch and deform if efforts are made to lift it.
"TPS" - An acronym for "Temporary Protected Status". This program enables the
President of the United States to permit designated nationals to remain in the United
States with employment authorization by declaration.
TWOV - This acronym stands tor "Transit Without Visa". The "TWO1
allows for non-immigrant transit entry without a visa to nationals of certain countries
under certain general conditions (e.g., admissibility, confirmed onward reservations, etc.).

applicants are also watchlisted if they are going to be subject to NSEERS upon arrival
in the United States. Visas Viper was designed to input people into TIPOFF with serious
terror/crime issues. Visas Donkey extends to people who are suspected of being
excludable under some of the criminal exclusion grounds of the Immigration Act (e.g.,
drugs, alien smuggling, etc.). , Visas Mantis is used for applicants suspected of being
involved prohibited technology activities. Visas Eagle is a basic name check performed
for people on regular tourist visas for all any exclusion grounds. If a consulate gets no
response to a Visas Eagle cable after a certain period of time it was considered
permissible to issue a visa if no other grounds for denial came to light.
VWP - Visa Waiver Program - This program allows nationals of the following countries
to enter the United States for 90 days for business or tourist purposes:
VWP applicants can be immediately removed from the United States unless they request
asylum.
"Washed Visa" - Usually refers to a "Teslin" machine-readable US visa that has had all
of its printed information removed with a solvent.
