NURSING POLICY


2. DEFINITION OF TERMS 2.1 Patient Visitation refers to a process whereby a patient has the opportunity to interact with his/her family members and friends that becomes an important part of and aids in their recovery and healing process. 3. POLICY 3.1 Gulf Diagnostic Center hospital believes that family members are a significant and positive force in the healing and recovery of patients. 3.2 Visitation guidelines are developed with the following factors considered: a) the benefit of visitation to the patient; b) impact of visitation on patient care; and c) the safety and security of patients, visitors and employees. 4. SCOPE 4.1 This policy applies to all patients, relatives and employees involved in patient/family interaction in Gulf Diagnostic Center Hospital. 5. RESPONSIBILITY 5.1 Physician 5.2 Registered/Practical Nurses 6. GUIDELINES: 6.1 Visitation is governed by a patients condition and preference, physicians orders and appropriate discretion of the charge nurse and/or staff. 6.2 General visiting hours : 1000h 1200h and 1500h 2000h. 6.3 Only two visitors per patient are allowed to visit at a time plus a spouse/significant other individual. 6.4 Hospital staff reserves the right to limit visitation as needed or requested by a patient, that meets the health care needs of a patient or protects the privacy of patient. 6.5 Visitors of patients in isolation are subject to isolation guidelines. Visitors should check with patients nurse for specific limitation guidelines and policies. 6.6 Flowers and gift balloons are discourage inside the patients room because they may initiate promote infection and allergic reactions. 6.7 Use of cell phone is prohibited where monitoring equipment is in operation.

NURSING POLICY


6.8 Visitors younger than 7 years of age are discouraged within hospital premises unless they are brought for consultation or diagnostic procedures. 6.9 If visitors are restricted, an explanation to the patient and visitors of the reasons for the restrictions and evaluation of the therapeutic effectiveness of the restriction is given. 6.10 If a patient expressly wishes or physician orders that visitors are excluded for medical/therapeutic reason, a NO VISITORS sign is posted on the patients door. 6.11 If a NO VISITOR sign is posted on a patients door but the visitor is already inside the room, the nurse in charge of the patient informs and asks the visitor to leave, or when appropriate, informs the hospital security personnel who in turn informs the visitor that it is not allowed. 6.12 Only visitor who are free from recent exposure to communicable disease, without fever or visible signs of illness may visit. 6.13 To protect the health of our patients, visitors and staff and in accordance with local government law, No Smoking policy is strictly practiced within the hospital premises and hospital units. 6.14 Visitations outside of regular visiting hours are permitted at the discretion of the units charge nurse on the basis of a patients need and/or request. 6.15 Overnight visitation is generally discouraged although exceptions are made in usual circumstances. 6.16 The guard on duty advises visitors outside regular visiting hours to leave the premise. 6.
