VADEA NSW thanks all our 2013 financial members who were able to make our free members event, Indulge: National Art School. These events are designed to offer our members 'intimate', experiences with artists, galleries and the art world. The Indulge: NAS event provided attendees time to view Contemporary Australian Drawing: 20 years of the Dobell prize for drawing and the Dobell legacy and hear an outstanding presentation, on her own drawing practice, from artist Wendy Sharpe.

2013 SYDNEY ARCHITECTURE FESTIVAL

Your Community, Your City 10-day celebration of architecture & design The seventh annual event will be presented from 1st until 10th November 2013 at locations across greater Sydney. The Festival, Australias largest public celebration of architecture, is this year inspired by the curatorial theme of Your Community, Your City. With more than 60 events, 2013 SAF brings an explosion of architectural activity to Sydney and its suburbs including: guided architectural tours by bike, boat and on foot; architectural talks and symposiums; open houses; public installations; exhibitions; and childrens activities. The 2013 curatorial theme is designed to encourage Sydney residents of all ages and backgrounds along with members of the architecture and design community - to actively engage and interact with their local architecture and built environment. THE PREMIERS TEACHING SCHOLARSHIPS

The Premiers Teaching Scholarships are awarded to teachers across all systems and are for a five week study tour. The Premiers COFA Visual Arts Scholarship provides $15,000 for the recipient to conduct their study tour. The 2013 Gene Sherman Asian Art Scholarship was awarded to Jackie Boon, Newtown High School of the Performing Arts. The 2013 Premiers COFA Visual Arts Scholarship was awarded to Karen King, teacher at Caroline Chisholm College and a VADEA NSW Executive member. Below is an outline of Karens plans for the scholarship. Karens study investigates how collaborative interventions between artists, architects and communities have provided opportunities for re-engagement, renewal or regeneration in areas of social and cultural change. The five week study tour will visit Japan where Karen will look at two rural areas in Echigo Tsumari and the Seto Islands that have become important contemporary art sites which have regenerated these local communities. In Tokyo, Karen will also be meeting with artists and architects who have responded to the needs of those affected by the Tohuku earthquake and Tsunami through projects such as Archi+Aid. Karen will also travel to Paris to see the work of French/Australian architecture group Campement Urbain with marginalised communities in the Paris suburbs as well as look at the work of the Institute of Architectures schools program. Also in France, Karen will also study the impact of interventions by architects and artists in Marseilles developed within the 2013 European Capital of Culture program in sites and projects such as Friche de la Belle de Mai and Les Quartiers Creatifs. In England, Karen will meet with educators at the Tate Gallery London and Tate, Liverpool as well as educators with the Liverpool Biennal to look at their projects with schools and communities. Each of these sites provides different approaches to collaborative or participatory contemporary art practices and will provide models for developing visual arts programs in which students make and understand socially engaged art. Karen's proposed project grew out of her recent work in western Sydney based on the innovative Campement Urbain urban plan, Penrith of the Future/ The Future of Penrith. Other architecture and urban design projects such as the SuperSydney Project and her work as part of the team developing the Transforming the Local teaching resource with the NSW Architects Registration Board. Being awarded the scholarship is a great honour and it is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the culture of scholarly research that is the hallmark of NSW art education. The Premiers COFA Visual Arts Teaching Scholarship encourages Visual Arts teachers to be researchers and the work of past recipients is building an archive that redefines and enlivens interpretations of the syllabus as well as generating new approaches for art educators. Through my work in the classroom and in professional development work, I have been looking at potential for positive change for communities through active involvement in art and architectural interventions such as the urban design and landscape plans for Penrith or the Museum of Contemporary Art C3 West projects here in Western Sydney. I hope to look at programs run in schools and museums and local communities overseas that have promoted regeneration and renewal through art works, art events and architectural design. From the study, I hope to be able to bring back ideas for Visual Arts curriculum programs and project that would enable students to be Robyn Bannon, Lecturer Art Education COFA, Dr Kim informed and critical participants in their own local Snepvangers, Head, School of Art History and Art community. Great Teaching, Inspired Learning: A Blue Print for Action is the NSW Government's plan to improve the quality of teaching and learning in the across all schools. The Professional Teachers' Council NSW (PTC NSW) is seeking your feedback as part of the formal consultation process. The PTC NSW survey will take approx. 15 minutes to complete once you have read the document GTIL Recommendation 10.1 Consultation Paper. CALLING ALL MAKERS

Applications are now open to be part of Sydneys first Maker Faire at the Powerhouse Museum on Sunday 24 November 2013. Maker Faire is a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the world-wide Maker movement. A place where people show what they are making and share what they are learning. Makers range from tech enthusiasts to crafters, scientists to garage tinkerers, and all ages and backgrounds. The aim of Maker Faire is to entertain, inform, connect and grow this community. From robotics, electronics and gaming to textile, arts and crafts, and everything in between, Sydney Mini Maker Faire is the perfect platform to share your home-grown design, project or product. Applications are open to individuals, groups, schools and other organisations, whether youre interested in just demonstrating your invention or selling it as well!

INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY for EDUCATION through ART (InSEA) CONFERENCE 2014 The 2014 InSEA and National Visual Art Education conferences present VADEA NSW members with an excellent opportunity to showcase art education in NSW to national and international art educators. Both conferences are currently calling for abstracts and presentation proposals. Options for presenting are varied and offer you a range of opportunities to showcase your approaches to teaching and learning. We highly encourage members to showcase their work or team with other colleagues to develop a proposal. You could, for example: - report on a particularly successful program/series of programs - report on a collaborative visual arts project between your school and a local council and/or other schools - report on the influence of Terry Smith's (2013 VADEA: On Track keynote) ideas on contemporaneity (or another theorist or art historian) and how this has reframed your teaching of contemporary art - investigate how context influences your teaching practice, the content of your programming including the choice of frames and/or artists, and the effects on meaning in your students' artworks.
The possibilities are endless and the experience highly worthwhile.
The InSEA 34th World Congress to be held 7 - 11 July, 2014 in Melbourne, Australia. The world famous Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) Melbournes sporting and cultural icon has been purposefully selected as the venue for this triennial world art congress to provide a stimulating backdrop for exploring and examining the theme: Diversity through Art Change, Continuity, Context. How do we change to meet new contexts? What should we preserve and why? What roles should the visual arts play in these changing contexts? Should the celebration of diversity be at the core of the visual arts in dealing with these challenges and opportunities? What are the implications for the way we teach and what we teach in schools and universities and for creative practice?

Abstract Themes Abstracts will be considered that address issues identified in the overall Congress theme Diversity through Art and can be submitted under the following sub-themes. 1. Change What changes are needed in a contemporary arts education landscape? 2. Continuity What is important to preserve amidst arts education/policy/change? 3. Context How do we address/contest/maintain arts education in diverse contexts? Presentation Types Abstracts may be submitted for the following: Oral presentation Research Stream These will form the 1 hour parallel sessions for 20 minutes each, including 5 minutes for questions. Oral presentation These are presentations for non-researchers such as teachers and artists to present their schools programs, artists work, projects etc Pecha Kucha presentation Pecha Kucha is a presentation methodology in which 20 slides are shown for 20 seconds each (6 minutes and 40 seconds total). Poster presentation Posters will be displayed from Tuesday morning 8 July until Thursday afternoon 10 July. Times will be allocated for poster discussion and presentation. Panel presentation Each panel will comprise of two equally important components: Presentations from the members of the panel; A question and answer session between the floor and the panel members In-conference workshop Workshops will be 2 hours in duration.

NATIONAL VISUAL ART EDUCATION CONFERENCE 2014

Introduction The National Gallery of Australia presents the National Visual Art Education Conference in Canberra in January 2014. We look forward to welcoming those interested in visual arts education from around the country and beyond. The program will include national and international keynote speakers reflecting the broad interests and key issues in the visual art education. This conference is for pre-school, primary, middle school, secondary and tertiary educators, plus artists and educators from the museum and public gallery sectors. The program includes keynote papers, panel sessions, conference papers and studio workshops. There will be opportunities to network, up skill and update academic and professional knowledge.

Presentation types The conference program features invited key note speakers and parallel streamed sessions. Presentations can be made in the following formats. Paper This is a 20 minute speaker presentation followed by 5 minutes of questions and answers. All sessions are chaired. The chairs role is to introduce the presenter and keep the presentation within the time limit. We recommend against reading entire papers, and suggest you provide handouts and visual supports, such as PowerPoint, to assist delivery. Multiple-authored presentations are welcome. Showcase Participants need to take initiative in conceiving and designing the session. This is an opportunity to present a 10 minute digital projection (still and /or moving image with sound) that showcases process, work in progress, student work or aspects of teaching and learning. Format requirements are either PowerPoint sequence (with or without sound) or moving image files (.mov, .avi, .mpeg, .wmv). A session will include 5 or 6 showcases grouped thematically. Presenters will not speak to the work until the 15 minute chaired question and answer period at the end of the session. Please note that the time limit will be strictly adhered to. Submission process: Submissions close on Friday 8 November.
Notifications to speakers will be made by Monday 18 November. All submissions will be reviewed by conference organisers, who are staff from the National Gallery of Australia Learning and Access Department.

EXCHANGE SERIES ARTIST TALK CRAIG WALSH In 2010, digital media artist Craig Walsh took off in a motor-home and travelled to 11 remote and regional locations across Australia to create Digital Odyssey. Walsh worked with communities, their stories and surrounding environments to create large-scale public projections on trees, rivers, buildings and shop windows. Come and see how Digital Odyssey unfolded, and how it informed Walshs recent collaboration with the Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation in the Pilbara region of WA.
