Traditional Classics Program Guideline

Week 1: The student will give the first half of an (5-7 minute) oral summary of the text. The first half of the Story-Based Questions (SBQ) will be submitted this week. Week 2: The student will give the second half of their (5-7 minute) oral summary. As well, they will be assigned a discussion question, based on the analysis of character development, conflict, motif, or theme in the novel, and cite examples. It is encouraged that the student writes out the answer ahead of time, so that their thoughts may be organized and their answer well supported. In addition, the essay question will be assigned this week as well. Student will receive the literary essay outline to help them plan their work. Although they will not need to submit the rough copy with their final essay, they will need to submit their planning pages. The second half of the SBQ and the Original Classics Question package will be submitted this week. Week 3: The student will answer their discussion question orally, and submit their essay for teacher revision. Once the discussion question is complete, the student will use the remaining class time to work on the rough draft of their essay. The Written Summary and the Wordly Wise Lesson will be submitted this week. Week 4: The student will submit the rough draft of their essay if they need teacher feedback before their good copy is completed. If the student does not require feedback, they may hand in the good copy of their essay and their planning pages this week. Once the assignments are in, they may select their next book and see the front desk for the SBQ and Original Classics packages for the new text. *Students can determine whether they would benefit from teacher feedback on a rough draft of their essay. If this is the case, they may hand in a rough draft on the fourth week of the reading cycle. Please note, the teacher can help the student to revise their arguments, but it is their responsibility to further revise and edit their work on their own.
