What are alligators?

Alligators are large reptiles. They have
tough scaly hides and huge lizard-shaped
bodies. Alligators have four short legs
with webbed feet. They have long flat
tails. There are two species, or kinds, of
alligators: the Chinese Alligator and the
American Alligator. The Chinese Alligator
lives in China. This book is about the
American Alligator. Scientists call this
species Alligator mississippiensis.
