Historia
uanajuato es una hermosa ciudad minera, Joya de Amrica, que debe su fama y su fortuna al descubrimiento de ricas vetas de oro y plata. En la poca Prehispnica la regin estuvo habitada por tribus nmadas denominadas Chichimecas. En 1541 se dieron las primeras incursiones espaolas a este territorio y oficialmente fue fundada en 1570. En el ao de 1741 Guanajuato recibi el ttulo de Ciudad por el rey Felipe V de Espaa. Durante el rgimen del presidente Benito Jurez, Guanajuato fue temporalmente capital de la Repblica. En 1903 el general Porfirio Daz, entonces presidente de Mxico, inaugur el Teatro Jurez, el Palacio Legislativo, el Monumento a la Paz, el Monumento a Hidalgo y la Presa de la Esperanza. En 1945 el Colegio del Estado se convirti en la Universidad de Guanajuato. En 1953 se empiezan a representar los Entremeses Cervantinos que dieron origen en 1972, a la creacin del mximo evento artstico y cultural de Amrica Latina, el Festival Internacional Cervantino.

History The beautiful mining city of Guanajuato, Jewel of the Americas, owes its fame and fortune to the discovery of rich mineral veins of gold and silver. During Pre-Hispanic times, the region was inhabited by nomadic tribes known as Chichimecas. The Spanish first arrived in 1541, and Guanajuato was officially founded in 1570. In 1741, Guanajuato was granted the title of City by King Phillip V of Spain. During the presidency of Benito Juarez, Guanajuato was temporarily the capital of Mexico. In 1903 General Porfirio Daz, then president of Mexico, inaugurated the Teatro Jurez, the Legislative Palace, the Monument to Peace, the Monument to Hidalgo, and the reservoir Presa de la Esperanza. In 1945, the State College became the University of Guanajuato, and in 1953, performances of the short comic plays known as Entremeses Cervantinos began. These performances would later be the seed for the creation of the most important artistic and cultural event in Latin America, the International Cervantes Festival, which began in 1972. 4

Guanajuato, World Heritage Site Guanajuato, historically and culturally, is one of the most important cities in Mexico. This heritage, and a certain atmosphere that surrounds its venerable colonial houses, captivates the city's visitors. Student minstrel groups stroll through plazas and narrow streets singing merrily. Below ground, traffic flows through tunnels, unlike any other city in the world. Because of its beauty, historical importance, monuments, and surrounding mines, Guanajuato was named "World Heritage Site" by UNESCO in 1988.

En el centro de Mxico, a 20 minutos del Aeropuerto Internacional de Guanajuato y a tres horas de la ciudad de Mxico y Guadalajara, se localiza la histrica y cultural ciudad de Guanajuato. Guanajuato capital, limita al norte con el municipio de San Felipe, al sur con los municipios de San Miguel de Allende, Salamanca e Irapuato, al este con el municipio de Dolores Hidalgo y al oeste con los municipios de Len y Silao. La extensin territorial del municipio de Guanajuato asciende a 987.28 kilmetros cuadrados. Su rea territorial representa el 3.2% de la superficie total del Estado. Cuenta con una poblacin aproximada de 153,300 habitantes. Su clima generalmente es templado, con algunas variaciones poco acentuadas dada su accidentada topografa, con una temperatura media anual de 18C. y con una altura de 2,145 metros sobre el nivel del mar.

Location Guanajuato is located in the geographic center of Mexico. It is 20 minutes from the Guanajuato International Airport BJX or three hours from Mexico City or Guadalajara by car. The capital city of Guanajuato is in the center of the State. To the north is the municipality of San Felipe, to the south are San Miguel de Allende, Salamanca and Irapuato. To the east is the municipality of Dolores Hidalgo, and to the west are Len and Silao. The municipality of Guanajuato has a land area of 987.28 square kilometers (613.50 square miles), representing 3.2% of the total land area of the state. The population of Guanajuato is approximately 153,300. Its climate is temperate, with some variation due to the mountainous topography; the average annual temperature is 18C (64F). The city is 2,145 meters (7,037 ft.) above sea level.

Mercado Hidalgo
Construccin de principios del siglo XX, fue inaugurado en 1910 por el Presidente Porfirio Daz. Su fachada es de cantera rosa. En su interior se pueden adquirir dulces tpicos y artesanas de la regin.

Monumento a El Ppila
Monumento erigido en honor de Juan Jos de los Reyes Martnez apodado el Ppila quien realiz el acto heroico el 28 de septiembre de 1810, en la primer batalla de la guerra de Independencia incendiando la puerta de la Alhndiga de Granaditas. El lugar ofrece una vista panormica de Guanajuato que es un espectculo nico de da y de noche.

Plaza de la Paz
Plaza semi-triangular enmarcada por los edificios ms hermosos de la ciudad, en el centro de sta se encuentra un monumento de bronce con base de cantera y mrmol hecho para conmemorar el fin de la guerra de Independencia.

En esta Plaza se escenifican desde 1953 los entremeses cervantinos que dieron origen al Festival Internacional Cervantino en el ao 1972. Est ubicada frente una de las iglesias ms antiguas de Guanajuato. l origen de la ciudad de Guanajuato fue, el descubrimiento de las fabulosas minas de plata, que la convirtieron a fines del siglo XVIII en el principal productor de ese metal entonces conocido a nivel mundial. Los primeros hallazgos estn envueltos en un halo de leyenda del que es difcil distinguir la realidad de la fantasa. No obstante, no parece haber duda que fue en el ao de 1548 cuando se empiezan a trabajar los primeros tiros de minas en Rayas y Mellado; y que es ese mismo ao cuando desde estos tiros se descubre la famosa veta madre de Guanajuato. Esta prodigiosa veta corre a lo largo de los cerros que limitan la caada guanajuatense por el norte y el nororiente, dejando en la superficie terrena una constelacin de minas, tiros y bocaminas, que constantemente persiguen el quebrado trayecto de la veta.

Mines Guanajuato had its beginnings in the discovery of prodigious silver mines, which at the end of the eighteenth century turned the city into the largest silver producer known up to that time. The first discoveries are shrouded in legend, making it difficult to distinguish reality from fiction. However, there seems to be no doubt that it was in the year 1548 that work began on the first mineshafts of the Rayas and Mellado mines, and it was in the same year that the famous mother lode of Guanajuato was discovered. This generous vein runs through the hills that border the city to the north and northeast, and it has left on the surface a constellation of mines and mineshafts channeling downward to catch the vein in its sinuous trajectory.

Debe su nombre al arriero Juan Rayas quien la descubri en 1550, siendo la primer mina de Guanajuato. Su tiro de 1400 pies es considerado uno de los ms grandes del mundo. Fue la mina ms rica de la ciudad y an sigue en operacin. Al final del siglo XVIII y principios del XIX, esta mina produca dos terceras partes de toda la plata de Guanajuato que se exportaba a Espaa y Asia. La plata de la mina de Valenciana ayud a mantener el Imperio Espaol y sus Colonias.

The Valenciana Mine This was the most productive mine in the city, and it is still in operation. At the end of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth century, this mine produced two-thirds of all the silver from Guanajuato that was exported to Spain and Asia. The silver from the Valenciana mine helped support the Spanish Empire and its colonies. 16

Mina Experimental El Nopal

Los primeros trabajos de exploracin de esta mina comienzan antes de 1868 ao en que se form la Compaa Negociacin Minera del Nopal y Anexas cuyo objetivo fue explorar y explotar las vetas de plata de El Nopal y otras. Actualmente la mina se utiliza con fines didcticos y para visitas guiadas para el turismo de la ciudad de Guanajuato, cuenta con guas capacitados y seguro de accidentes.

The Experimental Mine El Nopal Exploratory work began on this mine before 1868. During this year the Nopal Mining and Company was formed with the goal of exploring and exploiting the silver veins at El Nopal and other mines. Today, the mine is dedicated to educating residents and visitors and providing guided tours. It has trained guides and accident insurance.

Bocamina de San Ramn

A mediados del siglo XV, la osada del minero era penetrar a las entraas de la tierra para extraer las rocas con metal precioso, oro y plata. En Mxico, la veta madre de plata est situada en el centro del pas, donde resalta la ciudad de Guanajuato con su distrito minero de la Valenciana, sobresaliendo la Bocamina de San Ramn. La Bocamina de San Ramn es la primera explotacin minera de la ciudad de Guanajuato y fue la ms importante durante el Virreinato, aqu se descubre la veta madre en el ao de 1548.

The San Ramon Mine Entrance leads into the Valenciana Mine, the most important mine of the viceroyalty period. Some of the mine's tunnels go as deep as 450 meters (1476 ft.) below ground. 17

lgo que se ha conservado celosamente es la cermica, existen talleres de prestigio internacional en donde la fabricacin de autntica maylica y alfarera tradicional con tibores, platos, especieros, escudillas condes y lebrillos invitan a una compra de coleccin. En el centro de la ciudad, en las tiendas de artesanas es posible adquirir todava la joyera de plata y oro tradicional de pajaritos, llamada platera barroca. En surtidas dulceras tpicas se pueden degustar deliciosos dulces tradicionales como: jamoncillos, cocadas, frutas secas y en conserva o las famosas charamuscas de coco y cacahuate en forma de momia.

Crafts The production of handmade ceramics and pottery is a tradition that has been carefully maintained here. Guanajuato is home of internationally renowned workshops where the production of authentic majolica ware and traditional pottery such as large earthenware jars, plates, spice containers, bowls, and basins are made for sale at irresistible prices. In downtown craft shops, one can still find silver and gold jewelry including the traditional pajarito (little bird) design jewelry, in addition to baroque silverware. In various regional candy stores, one can tries the traditional candies that are delicious. These candies include: cream and coconut candies, dried fruits and preserves, or the famous coconut and peanut candy twisted in the shape of mummies.

Museo de las Momias

La construccin del Panten Municipal Santa Paula, fue iniciada por el Ayuntamiento, el 30 de agosto de 1853. La momificacin en Guanajuato, es un fenmeno espontneo o natural efectuado por la falta de oxigeno en los nichos o gavetas, apoyado por la absorcin que realiza la caja de madera de los lquidos que se desprenden del cuerpo al iniciarse la descomposicin del mismo; adems de los microclimas que se crean en el interior de dichas gavetas, provocando la deshidratacin de los tejidos humanos e inhibiendo el proceso de putrefaccin, a lo cual se le denomina efecto higroscpico (control de humedad y temperatura que provocan la momificacin). La primera momia exhumada corresponde al mdico francs Remigio Leroy, quien fue encontrado el 9 de junio de 1865. Actualmente el museo de las Momias de Guanajuato tiene en exhibicin 57 cuerpos entre adultos e infantes que podrn observar a lo largo de sus 10 salas las cuales han sido renovadas para beneplcito de los visitantes, pero su coleccin total es de 111 cuerpos momificados y tres crneos. The mummification in Guanajuato is a spontaneous and natural phenomenon caused by the lack of oxygen in the wooden burial niches or drawers and the absorption of the fluids that come from the body when it begins to decompose. This, in addition of the microclimates inside the drawers, promotes the dehydration of the human tissues and inhibits the process of rot. This is called the hygroscopic effect. The first exhumed mummy was the French Doctor Remigio Leroy and was found on June 9 of 1865. The Mummies museum of Guanajuato has in exhibition 57 bodies including adults and infants that can be observed in 10 rooms. The rooms have been renovated for the visitors comfort. However, the museum's total collection is 111 mummified bodies and three skulls.

Museo Casa Diego Rivera

El Museo Casa Diego Rivera se encuentra en el centro histrico de la ciudad de Guanajuato. Fue fundado en 1975 en la casa donde naci Diego Mara Rivera Barrientos, uno de los ms grandes pintores mexicanos, el 8 de diciembre de 1886, en una de las habitaciones de la planta baja, y que habit los primeros seis aos de su vida, poca que marc el desarrollo de su personalidad. En el ao de 1971 se emprende el proyecto para convertir la casa en museo, como homenaje al ilustre muralista mexicano en su ciudad natal. Inicindose las obras de restauracin y rehabilitacin en 1975 por parte del Gobierno Federal. El acervo del Museo Casa Diego Rivera est constituido, fundamentalmente, por la coleccin del Ing. Marte R. Gmez, de la cual se exhiben regularmente alrededor de 175 obras originales del maestro Diego Rivera. Esta coleccin es una de las ms importantes del pas, porque representa diversas etapas creativas del Artista, como los aos de su formacin y su periodo cubista entre otros. Se pueden apreciar retratos, paisajes, desnudos, alegoras, bodegones y bocetos de murales, realizados en diversas tcnicas, como leo, tinta, litografa y acuarela. It was founded in 1975, in the house where Diego Mara Rivera Barrientos, one of the most famous Mexican painters of all time, was born. Rivera was born on December 8 of 1886, in one of the rooms of the ground floor where he inhabited the first six years of his life; this time marked the development of his creative personality. In the year of 1971, the project to transform the house into museum began. This was a tribute to the illustrious Mexican muralist in his native city. In 1975, the Federal Government started the restoration work. The museum exhibits around 175 original works of Diego Rivera, primarily from a collection of the generous donor, Marte R. Gmez. This collection is one of the most important of the country because it represents the artist's diverse creative stages, such as the years of his formation and his cubist period, among others. Portraits, landscapes, nudes, allegories, and sketches of murals can be enjoyed in the museum. They are made in diverse techniques such as oil, drawing, tints, lithographs, and watercolor.

Museo Regional de Guanajuato Alhndiga de Granaditas

La construccin de la Alhndiga de Granaditas se inici en 1797 y concluy en 1809. Imponente obra de arquitectura neoclsica de diseo sencillo pero de impecable tcnica, refleja la bonanza guanajuatense hacia fines del siglo XVIII. Concebida inicialmente como almacn, fue escenario de la hazaa heroica por parte de el Ppila, el 28 de septiembre de 1810, en una de las batallas inciales del movimiento de Independencia y la victoria del ejrcito Insurgente motiv a continuar la lucha. El acervo del Museo Regional de Guanajuato est compuesto por bienes culturales del patrimonio nacional arqueolgico, histrico y artstico. Las exposiciones permanentes se encuentran organizadas en cuatro secciones principales: arqueologa, historia, etnografa y arte. El Maestro Jos Chvez Morado pint en bvedas y muros de las escalinatas del edificio los murales que se intitulan Abolicin de la Esclavitud (1955) Canto a Guanajuato (1966) y Aportaciones de Guanajuato a la Integracin Nacional (1966). Alhndiga de Granaditas Museum The construction of Alhndiga de Granaditas began in 1797 and it was concluded in 1809. This imposing work of neoclassical architecture, with a simple design but an impeccable technique, reflects Guanajuatos peacefulness toward the end of the XVIII century. This was used initially as warehouse in 1810. Also, it was scenario of the heroic act from the "Ppila", burning down the door and allowing the entrance of the rebels on September 28 of 1810. This was one of the initial battles of the Independence movement and its victory motivated the rebels to continue the fight. The wealth of the Regional Museum of Guanajuato is renowned for cultural goods of the national archaeological, historical and artistic patrimony. The permanent exhibitions are organized in four main sections: archaeology, history, ethnography and art. Artist Jos Chvez Morado painted the murals in the staircase vaults of the building. These murals are entitled Abolition from the Slavery (1955) Song to Guanajuato (1966) and Contributions from Guanajuato to the National Integration (1966). Besides the rooms of permanent exhibitions, there are many temporary exhibitions. The main collections include: Pre-Hispanic stamps, paintings by of Hermenegildo Bustos, and Meso-American Art.

Pinacoteca del Templo de la Compaa

El inmueble pertenece al complejo del Templo y Casa de la Compaa, su construccin fue llevada a cabo de 1747 al 8 de noviembre de 1765. A la izquierda del Altar Mayor se encuentra una puerta labrada en madera que conduce a una esplndida nave correspondiente a los tres ejes del Templo. Anteriormente sacrista, hoy alberga las obras pictricas ms importantes de tres estilos: tequitqui, virreinal y neoclsico. Colecciones que datan del siglo XVII al XIX, de pintores europeos, lienzos de Miguel Cabrera, Baltasar Echave Orio y de Jos Ibarra. Pueden observarse en este recinto algunas obras como un relicario del siglo XVIII y la maqueta de la cpula actual del Templo. Art Gallery of La Compaa Church The property belongs to the complex of the Temple and House of La Compaa. Its construction began in 1747 and ended on November 8 of 1765. On the left side of the main Altar, there is a wooden door that leads to a splendid room corresponding to the three axes of the Temple. This was previously the sacristy, but today it houses important pictorial works in three styles: tequitqui, viceregal and neo-classicist. This collection dates from the 17th to the 19th century with European painters Miguel Cabrera, Baltasar Echave Orio, and Jos Ibarra among other. In the gallery are reliquary works from the 18th century, and the scale model of the current dome of the Temple. In this enclosure there are also temporary exhibitions and other cultural events, such as concerts, conferences, symposia, etc.

Museo del Pueblo de Guanajuato

Fundado el 21 de septiembre de 1979, el Museo del Pueblo de Guanajuato se ubica en una bellsima casona del siglo XVII perteneciente a la familia Sardaneta y Legaspi, quienes durante el Virreinato de la Nueva Espaa ostentaron el ttulo de marqueses de San Juan de Rayas; la construccin posee valores plsticos y arquitectnicos relevantes lo que hace doblemente atractiva su visita. De manera especial destaca la rica portada de su capilla domstica resuelta en un elegante barroco churrigueresco cuya autora se atribuye a Felipe Urea, uno de los ms destacados arquitectos de la poca de quien correspondi el diseo y construccin de la portada del Templo de la Compaa, tambin en la ciudad de Guanajuato. Con una vocacin orientada a destacar los valores de la cultura popular, el Museo del Pueblo de Guanajuato exhibe un importe acervo permanente con obra representativa del arte mexicano de los siglos XVII al XIX. It is located in a beautiful house dating from the 17th century. The house was owned by the Sardaneta and Legaspi families. During the royal period of the New Spain, they had the titles of marquises of San Juan de Rayas. The construction of the house has important architectonic attributes which make ones visit twice as fun. The front of the chapel is recognized for its elegant baroque style. Felipe Urena, one of the best-known architects of the period, designed this chapel. He was also responsible for the design of the front of la Compaa. The Museum of the Village of Guanajuato exhibits a permanent collection that represents the Mexican art from the XVII to the XIX century. This collection tries to emphasize the values of the popular culture. In the ground floor, the room called Teresa Pomar shows an extraordinary collection of crafts and miniature toys. There is no doubt that one of the most valuable parts of the permanent museum is the wonderful collection of the famous artist from Guanajuato, Hermenegildo Bustos. He painted portraits and he was known for the precision of his drawing. The magnificent sculptural work and paintings of Jose Chavez Morado, stand out in the museums contemporary collection.

Museo de Arte Olga Costa Jos Chvez Morado

El inmueble que hoy ocupa el museo, tiene su origen en el siglo XVI ubicado en el barrio de Paxtitln hoy Pastita, el proyecto de adecuacin del inmueble fue dirigido personalmente por el Mtro. Jos Chvez Morado, contando para ello con un musegrafo y un grupo de asistentes. El plano original de la casa que an se conserva ubica la mayora de las piezas donadas en la planta baja, en lo que fue salacomedor y escalera de acceso a la planta alta, la cual est dedicada a la exposicin permanente titulada Mano con mano, que es una coleccin de leos de los maestros Olga Costa y Jos Chvez Morado. En esta misma sala tambin se exhibe una interesante coleccin de piezas prehispnicas. El museo cuenta adems con una moderna sala de exposiciones temporales que forma parte del magnfico conjunto arquitectnico y que presenta obras artsticas a lo largo de todo el ao.

Olga Costa and Jos Chvez Morado Art Museum The property of the museum has its origin in the 16th century and it is located in the neighborhood of Paxtitlan, which today is called Pastita. The project of adapting the house was directed personally by the professor Jos Chvez Morado with help from a museographer and a group of assistants. The original plan of the house is still preserved, with most of the donated pieces located in the ground floor, which includes the dining room and the stairway to the upper floor. The upper floor is dedicated to a permanent exhibition titled Hand with Hand which is a collection of oils of Olga Costa and Jos Chvez Morado. This room also exhibits a collection of Pre-Hispanic pieces. The museum also has a room for temporary exhibitions and which presents artistic work throughout the whole year.

Museo Dieguino Ex Convento

El museo en su primera etapa expone los cambios de nivel que ha sufrido la ciudad durante sus cuatro siglos y medio de existencia, as como el estilo de arquitectura de los religiosos durante el siglo XVII. Despus del cambio de nivel que sufri la ciudad a partir del decreto de 1775, el primer claustro de San Pedro de Alcntara permaneci cerrado por ms de doscientos aos hasta que en 1996 se emprendieron acciones para su rescate y conservacin. Entre los primeros espacios que se pueden visitar se encuentra el claustro en tres de sus lados, la portera del convento, su zagun, un pozo, as como el espacio que constituy la sacrista del retablo del cordn emplazado en el interior del Templo. El museo cuenta adems con una exposicin permanente.

Ex-Convent Dieguino Museum The museum, underneath the Church of San Diego, exposes the level changes that the city has endured during its four and a half centuries of existence, as well as the style of the religious architecture during the 17th century. After the level change that the city went through after a decree in 1775, the first cloister of San Pedro of Alcntara was closed. It remained closed for more than two hundred years until 1996, when actions were undertaken for its rescue and conservation. The museum now has permanent exhibits. Among them are the cloister, the convent, the vestibule, as well as the location of the sacristy of the altarpiece inside the temple. 27

Museo de Mineraloga Ing. Eduardo Villaseor Shle

El Museo de Mineraloga Eduardo Villaseor Shle de la Facultad de Minas, Metalurgia y Geologa, de la Universidad de Guanajuato, se instituye como tal en 1870, cuando don Severo Navia y don Vicente Fernndez, inician la caracterizacin de los minerales hasta esa fecha existentes, siguiendo la clasificacin sistemtica del mineralogista estadounidense James Dwight Dana, (adopt el orden sistemtico de la clasificacin de Berzelius), pero sus inicios como gabinetes de minerales, datan de principios del siglo XIX al impartirse la ctedra de Mineraloga en el Colegio del Estado por alumnos del destacado qumico y mineralogista espaol don Andrs Manuel del Ro. El museo tiene en su haber alrededor de 20,000 ejemplares, los cuales fueron donados en su mayora por don Vicente Fernndez, don Severo Navia y don Ponciano Aguilar; a travs de los aos, el nmero de ejemplares se ha ido incrementando por la aportacin de directores, alumnos y ex alumnos. El 10 de agosto de 1976 se inaugur el edificio actual del Museo.

Eduardo Villaseor Shle Mineralogical Museum The Mineralogical Museum Eduardo Villaseor Shle is named for a member of the Faculty of Mines, Metallurgy, and Geology of the University of Guanajuato. It was founded in 1870 by Severo Navia and Vicente Fernandez. The Museums initial purpose was classification of the mineral that has been discovered up to that time. Navia and Fernandez followed the classification system of the American mineralogist James Dwight Dana who adopted Berzelius' classification system. The museum uses the mineral offices dating from the beginning of the 19th century where mineralogy classes were given by the outstanding Spanish chemist and mineralogist Mr. Andres Manuel del Rio. The museum has about 20,000 samples, the majority of which were donated by Fernandez, Navia, and Ponciano Aguilar. Through the years, the number of the samples has increased, thanks to the contributions of different directors, students and graduate students. On August 10, 1976, the current building of the museum was inaugurated.

Galera Mariana de la Baslica Colegiata de Nuestra Seora de Guanajuato

Con la creacin de esta galera se mantienen despiertas las tradiciones locales de la ciudad y se refuerza el vnculo de la identidad entre la poblacin y su antecedente histrico. Sus cinco salas estn dedicadas al culto y veneracin de la Virgen Mara, cuya imagen se encuentra aludida en valiosas pinturas y objetos litrgicos. Seora de Guanajuato. It was donated to the city by Felipe II in the middle of the 16th century. The first room imitates the old chapel of Virgin Lourdes built between the years 1870 and 1878. Gene Byron Museum The ex Hacienda of Benefit dates from the 17th century. It was reconstructed in the 1959s and was the home of Canadian artist Gene Byron who lived here with her husband for almost 30 years. The decorations are keeping with the period and will let you travel through time, making it an unforgettable experience. This cultural center gives classes in baroque jewellery, appreciation of Mexican art, guitar, piano and violin. There are chamber music concerts every Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Teatro Jurez
Se localiza en el centro de la ciudad y fue inaugurado el 27 de octubre de 1903, por el presidente de la Repblica el General Porfirio Daz, con la representacin de la opera Aida que fue un verdadero xito. Es, sin lugar a duda, uno de los teatros ms atractivos del pas y reconocido mundialmente por su arquitectura y por su escenario de diversos e importantes eventos culturales internacionales. Construccin realizada a fines del siglo XIX y principios del XX. Monumento conservado que muestra el eclecticismo imperante en la arquitectura de esa poca. Realizado en un estilo drico que pretende ser de inspiracin romana. La fachada est formada por doce columnas de cantera verde rematadas por capiteles de bronce, en cuya parte superior se encuentran las estatuas de ocho de las nueve musas. El interior de la sala es de estilo morisco, con arabescos en los balcones, palcos y paneles. It is without a doubt one of the most attractive theaters in the country and known worldwide for its architecture and for being the scene of diverse and important international cultural events. It is a building that the eclecticism of architecture of that time. It was built in a Doric style of Roman inspiration. The facade is formed by twelve columns of green stone, finished off by capitals of brass. On the roofline are sculptures of eight of the nine muses. The interior of the theatre is in Moorish style, with arabesque balconies, boxes and panels. The first stone was placed on May 5, 1873 on the site of the former Temple of San Pedro, which itself later became the hotel Emporium.

Se le considera el ms importante del mundo en su gnero, con un patrimonio de ms de 800 piezas que representan las figuras del Quijote y otros personajes de la novela de Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra Don Quijote de la Mancha, as como del mismo inmortal autor. Don Quixote Iconographic Museum This museum is considered the most important in the world in its category, with a collection of more than 800 pieces, including figures of "El Quijote" and other characters from Miguel de Cervantes Saavedras novel "Don Quijote de la Mancha". The collection consists of sculptures, paintings, drawings, engravings, crafts, ceramic pieces, and more. It is an important collection of the most outstanding plastic artists in the 19th and 20th centuries from Spain and Mexico, as well as from other countries. Don Eulalio Ferrer Rodriguez founded the museum with the donation of his collection from Mexico City. Monumento al Ppila, Museo-Mirador

Este monumento y lo que en su interior se exhibe es un homenaje del Pueblo de Guanajuato a Juan Jos de los Reyes Martnez, apodado el Ppila, quien es el smbolo de los mineros guanajuatenses que se incorporaron a las huestes de Hidalgo entregando a la causa independentista sus armas, sus instrumentos de trabajo y las tcnicas propias de su oficio. El 15 de enero de 1939, por iniciativa del Gobierno del Estado de Guanajuato, se comenz a construir. El encargado de llevar a cabo tan magna obra, fue el escultor guanajuatense Juan Fernando Olaguibel. El 5 de febrero de 1940, se inaugura el monumento, labrado en cantera rosa extrada del Cerro de la Bufa, con una reproduccin del marco, cornisa y remate neoclsico de la puerta que El Ppila incendi en la Alhndiga de Granaditas, para obtener la primera victoria insurgente, que hoy sirve como acceso a este museo-mirador. Para llegar al Monumento puedes tomar el funicular que se ubica a un costado del Teatro Jurez.

The Ppila Monument and Museum This monument and inside exhibits are in honour of Juan Jos de los Reyes Martnez, nicknamed Ppila". The Ppila statue is the symbol of the miners from Guanajuato who joined the troops of Hidalgo in the War of Independence in 1810. They gave their weapons, their tools, and their mining know-how to the cause of independence. There is a reproduction of the neo-classicist-style door that Juan Jos de los Reyes Martnez set on fire at the Alhndiga de Granaditas fortress, thus helping the insurgents win their first victory over Spanish. Construction of the monument began on January 15, 1939 by the State Government of Guanajuato. The sculptor Juan Fernando Olaguibel, a native of Guanajuato, was in charge of carrying out the great work. The monument was inaugurated on February 5, 1940. It is made of pink stone extracted from the nearby prominent hill called La Bufa. You can reach the Ppila monument by taking the funicular tram located behind the Teatro Jurez.

Museo de Historia Natural Alfredo Dugs

Los Museos de Historia Natural tienen sus antecedentes en los gabinetes de historia natural que se hicieron muy populares entre los aristcratas y la realeza durante el Renacimiento en Europa, aproximadamente a mediados del siglo XVI. La coleccin del Museo de Historia Natural Alfredo Dugs, es una de las mejor conservadas de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y principios del siglo XX. La coleccin del gabinete de historia natural del Colegio del Estado, estaba formada por una importante adquisicin de ejemplares que se encarg a Europa junto con una coleccin de minerales y por todas las aportaciones de los propios alumnos, los cuales se encuentran ahora en el actual Museo de Mineraloga de la Universidad de Guanajuato. La coleccin consiste de toda clase de objetos y curiosidades, fsiles, animales disecados, antigedades, piezas histricas y razas exticas. La coleccin del Museo Alfredo Dugs perteneci a este mdico francs que vivi en Guanajuato Capital desde 1856 hasta su muerte en 1910. Por su antigedad, as como por su coleccin de anfibios y reptiles, es considerado uno de los ms importantes de Mxico.

Alfredo Dugs Natural History Museum Museums of Natural History have their antecedents in the nature collections of aristocrats so popular during the 16th century Renaissance in Europe. The collection of this nature museum is one of the best from the second half of the 19th century and into the 20th century. The collection was started with an important acquisition of examples from Europe along with a collection of minerals which can be seen at the Museum of Mineralogy of the University of Guanajuato. The collection consists of all types of objects and curiosities, fossils, preserved animals, antiquities, historic and exotic items. It was created by Dr. Alfredo Dugs, a French naturalist who lived in Guanajuato from 1856 until his death in 1910. Because of its antiquity and for its specimens of reptiles and amphibians, the museum is considered one of the most important in Mexico.

Santuario de Cristo Rey

Shrine of Christ the King (Cristo Rey) This shrine crowns the mountain Cerro del Cubilete, 2,600 meters (8,530 feet) above sea level. One of Mexico's most important religious monuments, it marks the geographical center of our country. The site was originally home to a Christ the King statue of lesser size, which was destroyed during what is known as the Cristero War. The current building is used as base to the gigantic statue that measures 20 meters in height and weighs 80 tons. It was constructed by Nicols Mariscal in 1944, who previously built a chapel for the same dedication in a side of the Cathedral of Len. The building and the Christ statue are in the Art Deco style.

Este fue el origen del Templo que podemos ver ahora. Cuenta la tradicin que la imagen de Cristo que se venera en el Templo actual fue enviada a Cata por el rico minero Alonso de Villaseca propietario de grandes minas en Ixmiquilpan, Cardonal y Zimapn para ser venerada en una de las haciendas que tena en Cata. No obstante, para albergar a la escultura y sus devotos en un espacio adecuado, se iniciaron los trabajos de construccin del Templo actual en el ao de 1709 y tras largos periodos de suspensin se concluyeron 1789. El Santuario del Mineral de Cata es ahora un centro religioso de importancia nacional, ya que a l acuden fieles de todas las regiones del pas a venerar la milagrosa imagen del Cristo de Villaseca, impulsados preferentemente por el deseo de conseguir indulgencias, bienes y favores.

Mineral de Cata Shrine Given the religious spirit of the time, it was customary for miners to build chapels at work sites to fulfill their religious needs. Such was the origin of the church we can see today. Local history says that the image of Christ that is now venerated in the church was sent to Cata by the wealthy miner Alonso de Villaseca -- owner of large mines in the towns of Ixmiquilpan, Cardonal and Zimapn -- to be venerated in one of his own haciendas in Cata. To provide the sculpture and faithful parishioners with an adequate space, the construction of the current church was begun in 1709. After several long pauses in the construction, the church was finally concluded in 1789. The Mineral de Cata Shrine is now a religious center of national importance, as worshipers from all corners of the country come to venerate the miraculous image of the Christ of Villaseca, motivated mainly by their wish to obtain indulgences and favors. 44

Collegiate Basilica of Our Lady of Guanajuato This venerable parish church, now the Collegiate Basilica of Our Lady of Guanajuato, was begun in 1671 and completed in 1696. It is one of the finest examples of seventeenth century mannerist-baroque architecture. In its interior, one can admire the antique figure of the Virgin, patron of Guanajuato, which was a gift from King Charles I and his son, Phillip II of Spain.

Templo de la Compaa de Jess

Sin duda el mejor ejemplar de la poca de oro de Guanajuato, pues marca en la historia artstica la evolucin definitiva de la arquitectura churrigueresca de la Nueva Espaa. La construccin de este Templo se inicio en el ao de 1747 y se termin en 1765. Church of La Compaa de Jess The Church of La Compaa, or Society of Jesus, is the best example of golden age architecture in Guanajuato. It marks the most mature stage of Churrigueresque (Spanish Baroque) design in New Spain. The construction of this church began in 1747 and was completed in 1765. En 1560 se inici la construccin del hospital para indios tarascos. Cinco aos despus fue inaugurado y dedicado a la veneracin de la Virgen del Rosario. En 1913 se trajo de Europa la imagen de Mara Inmaculada que actualmente se venera. Church of Hospitals In 1560, construction of a hospital for the Tarascan natives was begun. Five years later, it was inaugurated and dedicated to the veneration of the Virgin of the Rosary. In 1913, the image of Immaculate Mary was brought from Europe. This is the image that is venerated today.

Templo de la Santa Casa

Pequea capilla dedicada a la veneracin de San Juan Bautista desde su origen; posteriormente, en el siglo XIX, pas al dominio de la Orden Franciscana hasta que les fue entregado su propio Templo. Church of Santa Casa This small chapel dedicated to the veneration of Saint John the Baptist at its inception. Later in the 19th century, it was the church of the Franciscan Order until they were granted their own church.

Templo de San Cayetano

En 1775 comenz su construccin en un rea prxima a la mina de Valenciana y fue terminado en 1788. De estilo churrigueresco en cantera rosa, su altar y retablos estn cubiertos de oro laminado. Conocido tambin como Templo de la Valenciana, est dedicado a San Cayetano confesor, patrono de los mineros. En sus inicios perteneci a la Orden Hospitalaria de los Latinos, quienes construyeron, contiguo al Templo, un convento que no ocuparon y que hoy alberga a la Escuela de Filosofa y Letras de la Universidad de Guanajuato. Church of San Cayetano or Valenciana This Churrigueresque church, built of pink quarry stone, features three wooden altarpieces covered in gold leaf. In 1775 the construction was begun near the Valenciana Mine, and the church was completed in 1788. Initially, the church belonged to the Hospitalet Order of the Latins. Adjoining the church, the same Order built a convent which they never occupied and which today houses the School of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Guanajuato.

Templo de San Diego

La orden franciscana inici su construccin en 1763. La inundacin de 1780 lo destruy. La obra de reconstruccin fue costeada por el primer Conde de Valenciana y se concluy en 1784. La fachada, labrada en cantera rosa, constituye un preciado ejemplo del estilo churrigueresco.

Church of San Diego The Franciscan Order began the construction of this church in 1763, but the flood in 1780 destroyed it. The reconstruction project was financed by the first Count of Valenciana, and was concluded in 1784. The faade, carved in pink quarry stone, is an important example of Churrigueresque architecture.

Cuando los franciscanos llegaron a Guanajuato fundaron un hospicio al lado del Templo de San Juan Bautista, el cual se les cedi hacia 1828. Ah se asent el convento de San Francisco, cuyo edificio se concluy en 1792. Los franciscanos decoraron el interior con altares de piedra labrada segn el gusto neobarroco de la poca.

Tiene sus orgenes en la segunda mitad del siglo XVII, en la hacienda de beneficio de metales denominada San Francisco Javier, como una simple capilla, en donde se administraban los sacramentos a los propietarios y mineros.

Templo de Santa Mara de la Asuncin

La construccin de este Templo se inici en abril de 1873, con fondos y terrenos otorgados por el gobernador Florencio Antilln, segn proyecto del arquitecto Jos Noriega. Posee una torre central que acoge un reloj alemn colocado en 1875. Church of Santa Mara de la Asuncin The construction of this church dedicated to Saint Mary of the Assumption began in 1873 with funds and land granted by then-governor Florencio Antillon. It was designed by architect Jos Noriega. The church's central tower has a German clock which was installed in 1875.

Construccin que data de los primeros aos del siglo XVII. Entonces era una sencilla capilla dedicada a la Virgen de Guadalupe, que formaba parte de la hacienda de minas de nuestra Seora de Guadalupe o Pardo.

En 1727 la Orden de los betlemitas solicit la cooperacin y auxilio para fundar en esta ciudad un hospital con hospicio-convento y Templo de Beln. Poco despus de 1773 en los terrenos de la antigua hacienda de beneficio de Cervera, se inici la construccin del inmueble. Su fachada es de estilo barroco churrigueresco, que an conserva su tallado original. Parish Church of Belen In 1727, the Bethlehemite Order requested assistance to found a hospital with a hospice/convent and parish church. Soon after 1773, the construction began on the lands of the old hacienda and ore-concentrating mill known as "Cervera". The church still maintains its original Churrigueresque baroque faade.

Templo de San Sebastin

Durante la poca colonial podran contarse en Guanajuato tantos cementerios como iglesias, en virtud de que en casi todas ellas los atrios cumplan las funciones de tales. Para entonces el de San Sebastin, que data del siglo XVIII, se encontraba fuera del permetro de la Ciudad. En el ao de 1782 un feligrs de apellido Moratn construy con la ayuda de limosnas el Templo que se encuentra en el interior de ese camposanto.

Church of San Sebastian During the colonial period, there were as many cemeteries in Guanajuato as there were churches, because the courtyards of the churches were, in fact, cemeteries. At that time, the San Sebastin Cemetery, which dates back to the 18th century, was outside the city limits. In 1782, a parishioner named Moratn, with the help of alms he received, built the church which is situated on the grounds of this cemetery.

Templo de San Roque

La pequea iglesia de San Roque, ubicada frente a una atractiva placita de un encanto urbano incomparable, fue construida a principios del siglo XVIII, hacia el ao de 1726. Su fachada es de estilo barroco. En la Plazuela se escenifican desde 1953 los Entremeses Cervantinos que dieron origen al Festival Internacional Cervantino en el ao 1972.

Church and Town Square of San Roque The small Church of San Roque, located next to a fine town square with undeniable charm, was built at the beginning of the 18th century, around 1726. Its facade is baroque in style. The square has been the stage for the short comic plays known as Entremeses Cervantinos since 1953. These plays gave rise to the International Cervantes Festival in 1972.

Edificado en el siglo XVIII. Se caracteriza porque durante las fiestas que ah se celebran en el mes de diciembre, en honor a la Virgen de Guadalupe, se renen grupos de danzantes de varias partes del Estado.

Ballet Folklrico de la Universidad de Guanajuato

El Ballet Folklrico de la Universidad de Guanajuato se fund entre noviembre de 1985 y abril de 1986, por Amrica Balbuena Cisneros, con el objetivo de rescatar y dar a conocer las danzas y bailes del Estado. Danzas, jarabes y bailes de expresin religiosa, anecdticas, de carcter histrico, guerrero y de conquista, constituyen el repertorio de la compaa, que ha hecho de su trabajo artstico, un verdadero compromiso para preservar la identidad guanajuatense y el valioso testimonio de sus antepasados. La formacin de los integrantes del grupo comienza a muy temprana edad, con esfuerzo y trabajo arduo en los talleres, lo que da como resultado un interesante espectculo coreogrfico, el cual ha sido presentado en importantes foros del pas como en el caso del Festival Internacional Cervantino.

Folkloric Ballet of the University of Guanajuato The Folkloric Ballet of the University of Guanajuato was funded in 1986 by America Balbuena Cisneros in order to preserve and perform indigenous Mexican dance. The repertory of the company includes dances with a religious expression; anecdotal and historical character, or about wars and conquest. The companys artistic work has made a real commitment in order to preserve the guanajuatense identity and the valuable history of its ancestors. The training of the company begins with very young kids. The fascinating choreographic spectacle performed by the company is the result of great effort and arduous training. The Folkloric Ballet has performed internationally, as well as in important forums within Mexico, such as the International Cervantes Festival. 53

A fines de 1962 un grupo de entusiastas jvenes descubri la msica de estudiantinas de origen espaol y se organiz para cantarla. En poco tiempo, con el apoyo de las autoridades universitarias se form la Estudiantina de la Universidad de Guanajuato, la cual debut el 13 de abril de 1963. A la fecha Guanajuato cuenta con un gran nmero de estudiantinas para actuar en callejoneadas, audiciones y serenatas. Student minstrel groups: Estudiantina In 1962, a group of enthusiastic young people discovered the music of the Spanish student minstrels, called the "Estudiantina". Not long after, with the support of university authorities, the Estudiantina of the University of Guanajuato was formed, debuting on April 13, 1963. Today, Guanajuato has quite a few student minstrel groups which give performances strolling through the city's narrow streets, and in concerts and serenades.

Callejoneada
(todos los das) Callejonear, es una costumbre que se volvi tradicin en poca reciente, es caminar por las calles y los callejones de la ciudad de Guanajuato, con las estudiantinas. Son un atractivo para los visitantes gracias al personaje llamado Tuno que entrega su alegra y buen humor, transportando a un mundo de magia y asombro bajo el marco esplendoroso de la ciudad, a travs de su msica romntica, jovial y picaresca.

CallejoneadasStrolling Guanajuato's narrow, winding streets (Daily) Walking through the narrow, winding streets of Guanajuato is something that has become a tradition of the estudiantinas, Guanajuato's strolling minstrel groups. The estudiantinas owe their popularity to a character named "Tuno", who creates a world of magic and surprise through romantic, jolly and picaresque music, full of his good spirit, with the city providing a magnificent backdrop.

Fiestas de San Juan y Presa de la Olla (segunda mitad de junio).- Evento artsticocultural. El 24 de Junio se lleva a cabo una verbena popular en la Presa de la Olla. Fiesta de San Juan and the reservoir Presa de la Olla (second half of June).- Cultural/artistic event. On June 24 a popular party is held at the reservoir Presa de la Olla.

Apertura de la Presa de la Olla (primer lunes de julio).- Fiesta popular, en la que se abren las compuertas de la presa para limpiar el ro de la ciudad y se ha convertido en una tradicin para los guanajuatenses. Opening of the floodgates at the reservoir Presa de la Olla (first Monday in July).- Popular fiesta. The reservoir floodgates are opened in order to flush clean the Guanajuato River. This party has become a tradition for local residents.

Da de la Cueva (31 de julio).- Fiesta popular en honor a San Ignacio de Loyola en la cual se lleva a cabo una verbena en las faldas del Cerro de los Picachos. La Cueva day (July 31).- Popular celebration in honor of St. Ignatius of Loyola. It consists of a fiesta at the base of the mountain called Cerro de los Picachos.

Aniversario de la toma de la Alhndiga de Granaditas (28 de septiembre).- Desfile cvico-militar que conmemora la heroica hazaa de El Ppila, al incendiar la puerta de dicho edificio y vencer al ejrcito espaol. Anniversary of the Fall of Alhndiga de Granaditas (September 28).- Civic and military parade to commemorate the taking of the Spanish stronghold Alhndiga de Granaditas and the heroic feat of El Ppila, who burnt down the door of the Alhndiga to defeat the Spanish army.

An idea which became an artistic mission, backed by a creative and committed group, the Entremeses began in Guanajuato in 1952. The enthusiastic group decided to pay homage to the "Prince of Wit", Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, by staging his short comic plays, the Entremeses Cervantinos.

International Organ Festival (May) The "Guillermo Pinto Reyes" International Organ Festival of the city of Guanajuato owes its existence to the city's cultural leaders, who were convinced of the artistic value of these fine instruments which are housed in each of five important churches in the city: The Basilica of Our Lady of Guanajuato, the Church of the Compaa, the Church of San Diego, the Church of San Cayetano at Valenciana, and the Church of Mellado. Conciertos de la Orquesta Sinfnica de La Universidad de Guanajuato

En la historia de las artes en Mxico, la Orquesta Sinfnica de la Universidad de Guanajuato (OSUG), creada en 1952, conserva, a medio siglo de existencia, un privilegiado lugar de excelencia musical, perfilndose como una de las agrupaciones orquestales de mayor tradicin e importancia en Mxico. El momento que actualmente vive la OSUG ha sido reconocido por la prensa nacional e internacional y con gran entusiasmo por el pblico, la agrupacin ha ampliado significativamente su repertorio, imprimiendo especial inters en la msica del siglo XX, as como una parte sustancial del repertorio internacional que haba permanecido silencioso para msicos y auditorio. En estos aos se ha trabajado en la consolidacin de un sonido propio, con vistas a obtener altos niveles en la calidad interpretativa, aunado a un intenso proyecto de promocin de la msica de concierto. La orquesta sinfnica dentro de su temporada anual ofrece sus conciertos en dos partes, la primera es de enero a junio y la segunda de agosto a diciembre. Los conciertos se llevan a cabo los viernes en el Teatro Principal a las 20:30 Horas. osug@quijote.ugto.mx

University of Guanajuato Symphony Orchestras concerts (OSUG) In the tradition and history of the arts in Mexico, the University of Guanajuato Symphony Orchestra (OSUG), founded in 1952, holds an honored place for its musical excellence. It is renowned as an established and important symphony orchestra in Mexico. Recently, the OSUG, has been recognized by the Mexican and international press, and has been enthusiastically received by the public. The orchestra has significantly increased its repertoire, demonstrating a special interest in 20th century compositions, as well as in many international pieces that had not been previously performed in Mexico. During the last several years, the orchestra has been working on the development of its own unique sound, its eyes set on achieving the highest levels of interpretative competence. Together with this endeavor, an intense project of promoting classical music is underway. The symphony orchestra offers concerts during its regular season from January to June and from August to December. Concerts are held on Fridays at the Teatro Principal, at 8:30 p.m.
