DO NOW 1) What does the word diversity mean?

October 4th

2) bio means live. What does the word biodiversity mean?

3) Which picture below has more biodiversity? Why? Biome: Tropical Rainforest Biome: Arctic

Learning Goals: Describe how a change in one factor in an ecosystem can affect others. Success Criteria: Discuss how the keystone species beaver affects the biotic and abiotic factors in its environment.

Biodiversity is the variety, of living things in an ecosystem. Rain forests have more biodiversity than other locations in the world, but are threatened by human activities.
Biome: Tropical Rainforest Biome: Arctic

A keystone species is a species that has an unusually large effect on its ecosystem. Example: the beaver
Discussion Question: What would happen to the arc if you pulled out the key stone? What would happen to the house of cards if you pulled out the red cards?

keystone

Keystone species form and maintain a complex web of life. By constructing dams, beavers create an ecosystem used by a wide variety of species

Discussion Question: How does dam building affect fish populations? What effect does the increase in fish populations have on the pond? What is the overall effect of damming?

creation of wetland ecosystem increased water bird population

The dam creates a pond from free flowing water, which allows a greater number and variety of fish to Answer to live and reproduce in the water. Practice Fish attract other species, like birds to the pond that Question 14 feed on them. Dam causes an increase in biodiversity.

Practice: Read pages 378 to 380 in your textbook. Listen to the audio file of pages 378 and 380. Use the notes and the information from the text to answer the remaining practice questions.

7. Are human beings a keystone species? Why or why not? Keystone species are those that help to establish and maintain a complex web of life and high biodiversity. Humans do not fit this label because human activities decrease rather than increase biodiversity.

10. How would a change in an abiotic factor such as sunlight affect biodiversity in an ecosystem. Changes in the amount of sunlight will affect local temperatures. Some plants might die. Some animals might lose their food source and move out of the ecosystem or die. Changes in sunlight lead to a change in the numbers and types of species in the ecosystem. New species may move into the area, taking the place of those that cannot survive.

Explain which biotic factors used by the beaver are related to its role as a keystone species.

The main biotic factors used by a beaver are trees. Beavers use trees to build a dam to block moving water, which in turn changes the effect of the abiotic factor water on the environment. It changes the environment and allows for more types of organisms to populate the ecosystem.
