Career and Member Services

2013 Employment Survey: In April, IEEE-USA published the results of its 2013 Employment Survey, which reflects both good and bad news for unemployed IEEE U.S. members. The bad news was that there were more unemployed members eligible to be surveyed and that the median period of unemployment was a lengthy 52 weeks. The good news was that 81% of respondents indicated they want to remain in the profession and that there was an increase in the percentage of members rehired who deemed their new job to be better or much better than their previous position. Salary Survey: IEEE-USAs 2013 Salary Survey of IEEE U.S. members has been completed, with responses from over 11,400 members in Regions 1-6. The data will be compiled and analyzed in a Salary Survey report and on-line calculator. Our relationship with Gallup will be terminating at the end of July and we are currently in negotiations with a new vendor to provide an updated calculator. For now the unlimited access to the calculator is populated with 2012 data but we plan to launch a new calculator this coming fall and will provide 5 complimentary uses of the 2013 Calculator, as we have done in the past.

Employment and Career Services Committee

IEEE-USA's Employment and Career Services Committee is charged to develop and dissemination products and services that assist IEEE members to sustain their professional development, career satisfaction, and life-long employability. Committee Chair: Ed Kirchner

Entrepreneurial Activities Committee

EAC's primary goal is the establishment of a virtual entrepreneurial village that will link entrepreneurs with their peers and prospective entrepreneurs with mentors. The village will also provide resources and a network for local entreprenurial groups, many of which are already established within IEEE U.S. sections. Committee Chair: Mark W. Wingate

Entrepreneurial Activities Committee

IEEE-USA renewed a Strategic Alliance Memorandum with the U.S. Small Business Administration for 2013, under which IEEE-USA provides SBA with insight and volunteer assistance in support of SBA programs targeted at high-tech start-ups. Discussions are currently underway with The Kauffman Foundation to collaborate on research, webinars and potentially public policy issues impacting IEEE members who are entrepreneurs. We are also planning the second in series of public policy forums, which were initiated by IEEE-USA at the behest of former Senator Snowe (RMA), to bring together key representatives of various federal agencies to discuss collaborative approaches to supporting high-tech entrepreneurship.

K-12 STEM Literacy Committee

IEEE-USA K-12 STEM Literacy Committee (formerly named the Precollege Education Committee) was established in 1984 to help improve the quality of precollege education and to raise the level of functional and technological literacy of United States students by placing emphasis on mathematics and science. The Committee's objective is to keep alive the innate curiosity of young children about science as they move into middle school and high school, so that they will continue to study mathematics, science, and technology. Committee Chair- Neeraj Bhatia, PE Co-Chair - Dusty Fisher

K-12 STEM Literacy Committee

IEEE-USA's K-12 STEM Literacy Committee is currently working on updating the outdated stem brochure: careers in electrical, electronics and computer engineering, target audience high school students, teachers, counselors, parents -related guidance literature for dissemination to k-12 students, educators, parents, etc. Research is underway to develop a branded science/engineering kit for use by stem educators. and developing a "kit" of IEEE and other materials for use by educators involved in teaching engineering principles to students. Planning for IEEE-USA's involvement in the 2014 US Science and Engineering Festival (26-27 April 2014) is also underway.

Alliance of IEEE Consultants Networks

AICNCC's objectives include fostering the growth of Consultants' Networks in the United States, encouraging consultants to join existing networks or form new ones, promoting the use of independent technical and engineering consultants by industry and business, and providing educational activities for self-employed members. Committee Chair: Hermann Amaya

Alliance of IEEE Consultants Networks

Since its launch at the beginning of the year, nearly 700 IEEE members have joined the IEEE Consultants Network, an IEEE special interest group that provides members information on consulting and opportunities to network at the national (and international) level. IEEE-USAs 2013 Consultants Fee Survey was released at the end of May. The survey collects data from around 1200 IEEE members involved in consulting practice. The committee also outlined methods for marketing the database to business and methods of marketing the database to fellow consultants.

Marketing to Business
1.

The committee will develop a 1 to 2 minute marketing video to upload to YouTube. The committee believes that YouTube videos show up on the first page of any Google search. The committee will identify head hunters from various firms to educate them about the database. The committee will ask these hunters to at least try posting contract or consulting positions on the databases assignment board. The Committee will also allocate money from its budget for placement and monitoring of Google Ads.

Licensure and Registration

The IEEE-USA Licensure and Registration Committee's (LRC) primary focus is on matters involving licensing of Professional Engineers and the impact that professional licensure has on IEEE members. The LRC also is continuously evaluating credentialing and how it relates to current PE examinations and available IEEE Society sponsored exams. Committee Chair: David L. Whitman, Ph.D., PE
