SERIES 60
Today more than ever drivers and owners are faced with demands for increased performance
while reducing fuel consumption.

Diesel Fuel @ $2.10/Gallon
Detroit Diesel understands the importance of fuel economy and remains committed to delivering optimum performance with
the Series 60 engine. Fuel efciency is achieved with superior design attributes, vehicle specication expertise, advanced
electronics and rigorous testing. Detroit Diesel continues to be the leader.
Through a series of controlled tests completed by Detroit Diesel engineers
with the cooperation of major eets across the country, the Series 60
once again proved it was the fuel economy leader. Series 60 continuously
outperformed its closest competitors in fuel economy by an average 3.18%.

Overhead Camshaft & Optimally Designed Cylinder Heads
The simple but practical design of the Series 60 cylinder block and head are the foundation of its
performance and efciency. By placing the cam on top of the cylinder head, the block is freed from the
space and strength required to support the cam. The engine becomes much lighter with a slim prole.
The cylinder head, without passages necessary for push rods can be optimally designed with short, straight
intake and exhaust ports. Side by side parallel valves allow charge air into and exhaust gases out of
the combustion chamber quickly and with less energy transfer. Some competitive engines have intake and
exhaust passages that are 6 long or longer contributing to increased heat loading and overall inefciencies
that reduce fuel economy.
VNT Boost
Responding to input from the ECU, the single variable nozzle turbocharger
VNT quickly and precisely delivers boost required by load conditions across
the entire operating range. Because the VNT spool-up is signicantly less
than a xed geometry turbo, throttle response is almost instantaneous and
fuel economy is optimized.
Series 60 Technology Improves Fuel Economy and Performance
The Series 60 operates with a variable nozzle turbocharger. This type of turbocharger has a dual function; it compresses the
combustion air which is then cooled by the Charge Air Cooler and it is delivered to the intake manifold. A small fraction of
exhaust gases are also driven by the turbocharger. The gases are cooled and mixed with the combustion air at the intake
manifold. This mixture provides the benet of lower fuel consumption and lower emissions. The short intake ports prevent
the air from being reheated prior to entering the cylinder. The result is a more fuel efcient engine.

Less Weight, More Load
Another factor in maximizing fuel economy involves the weight to power ratio of
an engine. When a lighter engine is designed to deliver substantial power, the
result is greater fuel efciency and acceleration. The 2005 Series 60 is designed to
be lighter than key competitor engines: 160 Lbs. lighter than the Cummins ISX and
310 Lbs. lighter than the Caterpillar C15.
Charge Air Cooling
In the process of being compressed, up to 45 psi, by the turbo, charge air may be heated up to 450 F. The charge air cooler
plays a critical role in removing as much as 100 F, resulting in cooler, denser air for efcient fuel combustion.

Specing Recommendations From Detroit Diesel
Spec Manager is the ultimate tool for enhancing productivity. It is a software utility used for specifying
the conguration of commercial vehicles and predicting their performance. Tools are provided to
recommend the best specications based on inputs such as; application type, vehicle cruise speed,
transmission, axle ratios, and expected vehicle performance preferences. Advisory notes warn of
potential driveline or driver issues. See your Detroit Diesel Distributor or Freightliner Group dealer to
optimize your truck specs.

Fuel Efcient Tires
Want long life tires? Be prepared to pay a penalty in fuel that will probably far exceed tire costs. Tires have a big impact on fuel
economy up to 14%. Work with your supplier to spec the most fuel efcient tread for savings up to $2,500.00
Every vehicle specication is checked against
guidelines for gearing Detroit Diesels heavy
duty engines. Spec Manager assists the
user in nding just the right combination of
transmission, tires and axle ratio to assure
that every customer gets a vehicle driveline
that is tuned to their specic needs.
Spec Manager
Always evaluate fuel economy and overall performance with a virtual reality test drive on one of over 300 routes. Cant nd what you want
custom tailor your own. Fine tune your specs for maximum fuel economy and lock in savings. A 1/10th of an MPG improvement through spec
adjustments may result in savings of to $400 per year.
Driving Habits And Truck
Components Change Often
As changes are made to each of the driveline components, the
results can immediately be judged on screen. All the areas of
vehicle performance are considered; acceleration, fuel economy,
gradeability, startablility, shift schedules and power capabilities.
The software provides easy to interpret graphs, charts and tables.
All information is available in well organized printable reports.

Cruise Power
Cruise Power is an optional engine rating which operates at a higher horsepower during cruise control.
The ECU automatically switches to the cruise power rating when cruise control is turned on. This extra
power gives the driver incentive to run in cruise control whenever possible. The reduction of excessive
acceleration provides a potential fuel economy advantage.

Cruise Control
Its a fact, the average driver has plus or minus 2.5 mph on the foot pedal. Thats a 5 mph swing on the throttle off the throttle.
Set the cruise to operate in a much narrower band and recognize up to a 6% fuel savings per year -approximately $975.
Optimized Calibration
Optimized Calibration of the 14.0L Series 60 was achieved by Detroit Diesel engineers studying pulse
width, EGR rates, injection timing and other factors that optimize fuel ratings. These ratings can
improve your fuel economy up to 2% at no additional cost.

Half Engine Idle
The Series 60 engine can be programmed through the ECU to idle on 3 cylinders under pre-set conditions,
saving fuel and reducing white smoke.
Supported With Electronic Tools For Improved Fuel Efciency
And Greater Driver Awareness
Detroit Diesels patented DDEC Optimized Idle feature is designed to save you money by
limiting engine idle time to those times that you require it, based on engine temperature,
battery voltage, and interior temperature. As a driver spends the night in a sleeper, Optimized
Idle turns the engine off and on based on interior sleeper temperature requirements. The
reduction of idle time will improve your fuel economy up to 5%.
Optimized Idle
The automatic start stop system keeps the cab comfortable, the engine warm and battery charged. Every hour of unnecessary
idle not only burns fuel it generates additional maintenance at $2.20/Hour. Eight hours of sleep with the engine at idle will cost
you $17.60 in maintenance alone not to mention about 6 gallons of fuel. Takes idle from typical 40% to 20% for a 2/10 mpg gain.
Average savings $1,700 per year, not including resale value.
ProDriver
Your dash board business partner for total control of fuel
economy, at idle or over the road. This tool provides instant
feedback on driver operating characteristics and road
conditions. If followed, savings of up to $1,500 per year
not including resale value.
DDEC
Now in its 5th generation Detroit Diesel Electronic Controls
continue to demonstrate industry leadership in engine control and
management systems. DDEC not only has more computing power
and four times more memory but has added reserve capacity for
future innovations. By monitoring engine parameters hundreds
of times each second, this powerful electronic control unit (ECM)
determines the length and shape of each injection event and how
much fuel is delivered. By precisely controlling timing and quantity
of fuel the DDEC ECM delivers optimal fuel efciency and excellent
throttle response.
On-board Driver Data In Real Time
ProDriver DC is a dashboard-mounted display that provides
instantaneous summary information on vehicle and engine operation.
Real time graphic displays, shown when engine is running, provide a
driver with feedback on driving performance. Greater awareness will
help a driver operate for maximum fuel efciency.
