Section 8 Additional teachings of Jesus in Matthew, Luke and John

In general we have followed the story of Jesus life in Marks Gospel. This does not always provide the fullest account but is simple in structure. However it does mean that at times we need to add in some extra information from the other Gospels. This is one such section, though we shall not spend much time here as it is not necessarily about the life of Christ but about his teaching and that will be covered in other courses.

Much is made of the structure of this section: - is it simply a gathering of the teachings of Jesus as he approached the cross - do we need to read it all as being in the shadow of the cross? - is it an extended chiasmus with the pronouncement of 13:31-35 as the climactic centre?

John 5-11
In the gospel of John, only in chapter 6 do we nd any detail of Jesuss Galilean ministry (and thus the overlap with the synoptics) Chapters 5, 7-11 all involve Jesus visits to Jerusalem Although John tells us of Jesus attending feasts, his primary intention was not chronological but to show Jesus fullling Judaism - and in each situation we see him generating a lot of controversy
