JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD PROFILE INTRODUCTION: Under a broad policy framework of providing new technological education required for the industrial growth of the country in general and more particularly for the State of Andhra Pradesh, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University was established on 2nd October 1972, by an act of State Legislature. Rightly named after the ardent lover of Science and Technology, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, the University was established with the noble objectives of strengthening and improving the standards of Technological Education and making it relevant to the rural and industrial development of the country. On its formation, the Government Engineering Colleges at Anantapur, Kakinada and Hyderabad, along with the Government College of Fine Arts and Architecture at Hyderabad, became its Constituent Colleges. Subsequently, JNTU act 1972 was amended by JNTU (Amendment) Ordinance, 1992 to affiliate any other college or Institution notified by the A.P. State Government. Hence, JNT University is a Multi - Campus University with Head Quarters at Hyderabad. In the last thirty three years, JNTU has produced highly professional and competitive Engineers by infusing greater quality and content into the curriculum and educating the students with appropriate skills suitable for a rapidly changing industrial scenario. To improve the Quality of Technological Education, it has participated actively in a number of National Programmes like Teacher Quality Improvement Programme, Universityindustry-interaction through consultancy, Continuing Education Programmes and Expansion of Infrastructure facilities for Emerging Technologies. Distance Education programmes in B.Tech in Civil, Electrical & Electronics, Mechanical and Electronics & Communication Engineering were started by the University, in the correspondence-cum- contact mode, in 1983 and Computer Science and Engineering was added in 1995. JNT University is also offering through its College of Fine Arts and School of Architecture highly professional and job oriented courses in creative arts, architectural design and planning. University has established a number of higher learning institutes such as Institute of Science and Technology, School of Management Studies. With many professional colleges coming up in private sector, need has arisen to improve the quality of teaching. It necessitates providing continuous refresher courses to the teachers for updating and acquiring additional skills in new areas. With that goal, University has established UGC Academic Staff College for technical teachers which have been sanctioned by UGC. University is offering a number of P.G. Programmes in Computer Sciences and Information Technology. There are Short Term Courses offered by the University in Software areas. With fast growing needs in the area of IT, 10

University has established School of Information Technology in year 2000-2001 to bring all Computer and IT related activities under the control of School of IT. The establishment of various Units under JNTU as described above are also shown in Plate under Landmarks of University. Faculty of JNTU published a large number of technical research papers in International and National journals and Conferences. They also organised International and National Conferences, Seminars and Workshops. A good number of summer schools and refresher programmes were organised for the benefit of Teachers of various Colleges and Engineers from Industry. To enhance and focus on research, the University has established a Research and Development Cell and provided Scholarships for Full time Research Scholars to increase the in-house researchers. Constituent Colleges and Units: There are three constituent Engineering colleges and 10 other academic, research and Development units are there. So far, the University has given affiliation to 232 Engineering Colleges, 30 Pharmacy Colleges and 5 Architecture Colleges which have been established on Self-supporting basis. The detailed list of affiliated colleges is furnished in Annexure I. At a given time, there will be around 2,75,000 on rolls of the university either in its constituent or affiliated units. Aims and Objectives of the University: The objectives of the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University are as follows: To provide for the advancement of learning and knowledge in Engineering & Technology, Physical & Social Sciences and Architecture & Fine Arts by teaching, research and experimentation or practical training or by such other means as the University may deem fit. To provide that form of education which allows students to spend periods of intramural work so that upon graduation not only they possess a range of academic learning, but also the relevance of that learning to the affairs of the State in general and the Country at large. To promote thinking on new concepts, techniques, practices in the relevant fields of knowledge and their application to indigenous condition;

 designing and organising of new courses of study and training, evaluation and examination system; research relevant to the economic growth of the country; entrepreneurship among the students of the Constituent Colleges/ Units; and industrial consultancy services in the different faculties of the Colleges/Units. Administrative Profile: The Governor of Andhra Pradesh is the Chancellor of the University. The Vice-Chancellor is the Academic Head and Principal Executive Officer of the University. Executive Council: The Executive Council of the University is the Highest Body mainly concerned with the overall management of the University. Members of this council are drawn from Government, Industry and Academicians from within the University and experts from outside. The Vice- Chancellor of the University is the Chairman of the Executive Council. Advisory Bodies: The Executive Council is assisted by Academic Senate, Planning and Monitoring Board, Finance Committee and Selection Committee. The Academic Senate advises the Executive Council on matters relating to the Faculty, Curriculum, and evaluation methods. Planning & Monitoring Board: The Planning and Monitoring Board shall be the principal planning and reviewing body and it shall also arrange for periodical monitoring of the developmental programmes and teaching and research in the University. Boards of Studies: Different faculties have Board of Studies headed by a Chairman and Members drawn from academics and industry. There is a provision for students on the Board of Studies. The Director, Academic and Planning is the convenor for all the Boards of Studies of the University. All the decisions of the Boards of Studies will be put to the Academic Senate for its approval. Finance Committee: The Finance committee advises on all matters relating to the finances and budget of the University. Selection Committee: All faculty positions are filled on the recommendations of a duly constituted Selection Committee as per Statutes. Financial Structure:

The Maintenance grants of the University are received from the Government of Andhra Pradesh. In addition, Department of Science and Technology (DST), University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) support research and developmental projects. Further the University raises finance through self supporting programmes such as Distance & Continuing Education, P.G. Programmes, Consultancy Services and funded projects. Academic Courses and Mode of Admission: The University offers various courses in different faculties leading to the award of Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Research Degrees. Undergraduate Programmes The University offers the Following Undergraduate Programmes 1) Batchelor of Technology (B.Tech.) in 21 disciplines 2) Batchelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) 3) Batchelor of Planning (B.Plan.) 4) Batchelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm.) 5) Batchelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in 4 Disciplines All the above courses are Four Year Courses except B.Arch. which is a Five Year Course. Detailed List of Undergraduate courses being offered by JNTU is furnished in Tables -1 and 2 Admission Procedure The admission to regular B.Tech. and B.Pharm. Programmes are made based on the merit secured in Engineering, Agricultural and Medical Common Entrance Test (EAMCET) conducted by A.P. State Council for Higher Education. In case of B.Arch. and B.Plan. the admission is made based on Planning and Architecture Common Entrance Test (PACET). Admission to B.F.A. is made based on the entrance test conducted by the University. For all the above courses entry level qualifications is 10 + 2. Similarly, admission to B.Tech (For three Diploma Holders) through Correspondence and contact courses is based on the merit secured in the Engineering Common Entrance Test (ECET) conducted by the A.P. State Council for Higher Education. The diploma holders successful in ECET are also eligible for admission into regular B.Tech. courses, at Second Year level. Post graduate Programmes The University offers the Following Post graduate Programmes 1) Master of Business Administration (MBA) 2) Master of Computer Application (MCA) 3) Master of Technology (M.Tech.) in 54 disciplines 15

4) Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) in 2 disciplines 5) Master of Urban and Rural Planning (MURP) 6) Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) 7) Master of Sciences (M. Sc.) All the above courses are Two Year Courses except MCA which is a Three Year Course. Detailed List of Undergraduate courses being offered by JNTU is furnished in Table -3 Admission Procedure Admission to MBA and MCA is based on the merit secured in the ICET Examination. Admission to M.Tech. Programmes is based on either GATE or entrance test conducted by the University. Admission to M.Arch, MURP, MFA and MSc is based on entrance test conducted by the university. The University conducts Entrance Tests for admission to Fine Arts, Continuing and Distance Education programmes. For all the above courses entry level qualifications is Bachelors degree in appropriate field. Research Programmes The University offers the Following Research Programmes 1) Master of Science by research (MS) 2) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) 3) Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) for all fields Admission Procedure M.S. is a Post Graduate Research Degree in Engineering. Admission for MS is through an Entrance Test and an Interview, conducted by the university, for students who possess B.E / B.Tech. or any other Qualifications recognised by the University. M.Phil. is a research degree offered in Science and Humanities. Admission for candidates possessing Postgraduate qualification is through an interview. The Candidates once admitted, must pass in two subjects prescribed and then submit the thesis based on the results of their research work. Ph.D. Programme is offered in all faculties. Admission is for candidates possessing Post-graduate qualifications in the concerned subject and is through a Written Test or an Interview or both. The admitted candidates must pass the Pre-Ph.D. Examination and then submit the thesis based on their research work. The University has provision for Full time and External Registration for Research Programmes. In full time 16

research, the candidate has to work as Full time Research Scholar in one of the constituent Units of JNTU. In

case of external registration, the candidate must be employed in research and development organisation or educational institutions having facilities for carrying out the research work at their work place. However, they are also permitted to utilise the University facilities when are required. In case of external registration, the candidate shall have one research supervisor from the organisation they are working and the other supervisor from the university. All admissions for The Academic Programmes of the University are State-wide and are made as per the provisions of the Presidential Order and rule of reservation of A P State Government. Collaborative Programmes Besides these Programmes University conducts Collaborative Programmes with various industries and Universities in India and abroad. JNTU COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, ANANTAPUR JNTU College of Engineering, Anantapur stands aloft on a solid foundation of past glory and prestige. This college was started in the year 1946, under the post war reconstruction programme and functioned at Guindy campus, Madras for two years and was shifted to Anantapur in 1948. It was in the year 1958 the college was shifted to the present permanent buildings. Anantapur is a district head quarters, located about 350km from Hyderabad. JNTU COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, HYDERABAD The College was established as Nagarjuna Sagar Engineering College in 1965 by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. When the College was under the administrative control of the Department of Technical Education, it was affiliated to Osmania University, Hyderabad. With the formation of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University in 1972, it became a constituent college of the University and was renamed as JNTU College of Engineering, Hyderabad. JNTU COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, KAKINADA The College was established on 16th July 1946 as the College of Engineering, Visakhapatnam situated at Kakinada. In the final analysis a Technological University has to play its role, as a partner of industry, in the economic development of the country. RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CELL JNT University is now focusing more on Research programmes and need based technology. EXTENSION ACTIVITIES NODAL CENTRE FOR ANDHRA PRADESH UNDER NATIONAL TECHNICAL MANPOWER INFORMATION SYSTEM (NTMIS) The Nodal centre was started in September 1983 to collect and process date relating to the activity of the Degree and Diploma holders in Engineering and Technology who graduated from Engineering colleges and Polytechnics in Andhra Pradesh every year commencing from 1982. There are 21 such centres distributed in the various state capitals all over the country under this prestigious project funded by the Ministry of Human Resources Development with a lead centre in the Institute of Applied Manpower Research, New Delhi. Based on the data collected from the graduates of a year, the facilities for technical education in the institutions for the next academic year and the stock of engineers and the establishment in the corresponding financial year, Technical Manpower Reviews are prepared for overlapping three year periods. PROGRAMMES INTERFACE UNIT The University has established a Programmes Interface Unit in the month of August, 1997. The co-ordinator shall be the Head of the Unit and shall report the matters relating to the activities of the unit directly to the Registrar. Presently the following four activities are being administered by the unit:Grievances Redressel Cell: The University has established grievances Redressal Cell which examines the complaints and suggestions received from students staff of various units of the university. The activities of the cell will be monitored by a director. A committee is formulated with senior staff both teaching and non-teaching staff. The committee consists of both male and female members. 36

SC / ST Welfare: The University has established a Scheduled Cast and Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST) cell to look after the various programmes relating to the welfare of the employees and students of the University belonging to SC / ST Categories. Accordingly the SC / ST cell created by the it looks after welfare activities and furnish various statistical information of the SC / ST staff and students of the university and affiliated colleges to State Government, Government of India, UGC, and AICTE from time to time. Career Advancement and Resource Development (CARD): In pursuance of the national social policy as enshrined in the Constitution, a Centre for Career Advancement and Resource Development which is now under the programmes Interface Unit was started by the University in 1989 for SC and ST candidates for providing guidance towards advanced study opportunities and preparing them for State/ National level competitive examinations/tests such as GATE, IES, ECET and EAMCET with financial assistance of Social and Tribal Welfare Department of the Government of Andhra Pradesh. NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME (NSS) The National Service Scheme has been launched with the lofty objective of providing young students with opportunities to devote their spare time in the service of the community around them and of the Nation. This scheme is intended to involve College and University student's in a variety of Social Service and developmental activities without deviating from their main academic programme. This scheme is also intended to make the youth in the colleges aware of social realities and dignity of labour and make them self-reliant and socially responsible. Through various activities like Artisan training courses, afforestation, laying of roads, famine and cyclone relief work, the NSS volunteers are trying to realise these objectives. Established in the year 1974 with the intention of achieving the said goals, the NSS Units of the constituent colleges in JNTU have been very active throughout. At present, there are eight NSS Units, working with a sanctioned strength of 800 NSS volunteers, in various constituent Colleges/Units. Each unit is headed by a Programme Officer. To co-ordinate these activities, there is an NSS Cell at the University headquarters headed by a Programme Coordinator. Over the years, the University has played a distinctive role in identifying and executing various projects under NSS which reflect the specialised nature of the faculties of Engineering, Architecture, Fine Arts and other applied science in the University. The unflagging zeal with which our students worked in giving succour to the victims of 1977 devastating flood has won appreciation from all quarters. The Janma Bhoomi Clean & Green programmes conceived by the Government of Andhra Pradesh was taken up 37

The University has evolved an innovative system of examination and evaluation procedure which is highly efficient and automated. 1. Electronic Distribution of Examination Question Papers: The University examinations in all the affiliated colleges will be conducted by the University through its Nodal Centers. In this procedure the question papers are randomly generated by the computers and they are stored in the electronic form duly encrypted. These encrypted soft copies are sent to the examination centers. These question papers can be decrypted by entering three levels of passwords. The final password will be issued by the University 30 minutes before the commencement of the examination which will help the colleges to decrypt the question paper and print them at their centers. This gives full fool proof system and confidentiality. 2. Online examination for internal evaluation: This University is looking for bringing continuous evaluation system of the students which is essential in technical education. This can be achieved through online quiz examination. This year, online examination is successfully implemented for the first time in all affiliated engineering colleges. According to this examination procedure, quiz examination will be conducted This procedure helps to implement the continuous simultaneously in all the colleges affiliated to JNTU where papers will be generated by the computer from the question bank available online. evaluation. 3. Double Valuation System: In order to make evaluation system perfect and to do justice to all the students, Double Valuation system is introduced with effect from November, 2005 for all affiliated engineering colleges. According to this procedure each answer book will be evaluated independently by two examiners. These examiners will award the marks on different award lists without marking on the answer on the answer books. These two award lists will be compared by the Chief Examiner of the subject. If the difference between these two valuations is within the prescribed limits, the higher marks will be awarded to the student. If the differences are more than the prescribed limit the Chief Examiner will finalise the marks in consultation with the two examiners.
