34.0 VIETNAM 1972 SCENARIO: The Easter Offensive This scenario covers the North Vietnamese offensive of 1972. The North Vietnamese overran the South Vietnamese frontier and took the city of Quang Tri. The South Vietnamese eventually counterattacked and threw them back, though the Communists remained in control of several border areas. This scenario is in two versions: a short scenario which covers the initial Communist offensive, and an extended scenario which covers the campaign up to the point where ARVN retook Quang Tri. Game Length: Starting Points: Short Scenario: IV March 1972 IV May 1972 Extended Scenario: IV March IV II September 1972 Communist, Military = 0; Political = 0. Allies Military = 0, Political = 0.

Note: units are listed by their combat strength or identification. 34.1 Allied Set-up (Allies set up first): US C2: 5 ARVN C2: 5 Allied Controlled Cities/Bases/Towns: All in South Vietnam (other than Khe Sanh). Allies also occupy Svay Rieng and bases 367 and 354 in Cambodia (see (6) below). Place Destroyed markers on each of those two bases. ARVN Units Note: some ARVN units are at their UW strength. RFPF units are picked at random. Allied units may not be placed in Khe Sanh. Special Forces: (1) I Corps: 2 x SF camp; II Corps 4 x SF camp; III Corps: 2 x SF camp; IV Corps: 3 x SF camp. All are on their ARVN side. (2) SOG: ARVN 77. Campaign game: Phoenix, Phung Hoang. f. Air Available Box: (1) US: 3 x SAC, 5 x TAC, 3 x Helicopter, 1 x air commando. (2) ARVN: 4 x TAC, 1 x Helicopter. Additional Restrictions: (1) US land units may not move or attack until the Communists attack at least one hex containing American land units. At this point, all USA land units may engage in combat normally. Additionally, on the turn following the one in which US units are "released", the US receives a special reinforcement (see below). (There is no restriction on the employment of US air and naval units.) (2) ROK land units may not move or attack until the Communists attack at least one hex containing ROK units. At this point, all ROK units may engage in combat normally.

Allied Reaction: (1) ARVN Rally. On the first Allied Reinforcement and Refit phase in which any Communist unit occupies any city or major base hex in South Vietnam (other than those they initially occupied): the Allied player rolls one die and receives that number of RFPF units as additional reinforcements (if available). (2) USA: On the first turn following any Communist attack against a US land unit, the Allies receive 1 x USA 3 airborne brigade, plus 1 x naval strike. On the second turn, receive the US 9th Marine Brigade. (3) Campaign Game Allied air reinforcements are figured into the scenario reinforcement schedule. Allied Incursions into North Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia: Incursions have occurred into both Laos and Cambodia. Allied forces may enter these countries. Laotian Units: 1 x 2 garrison each Laotian city. Savannakhet: 1 x 1 airborne. Any Laotian cities: 1 x 2 infantry brigade, 2 x 1 infantry regiments, 3 x 2 guerrillas, 1 x 2 special forces. Cambodian Units: 1 2 garrison in Phnom Penh, 1 x 1 garrison each other Cambodian city. Any Cambodian cities: 4 x 1 infantry, 1 x 2 mechanized, 1 x 2 airborne, 1 x 1 riverine. Refit box: 1 x 1 division, 1 x 1 special forces, 1 x 1 guerilla. CIA Units: In Laos, on any hex not containing or adjacent to a Communist base: 1 x 2 [WS] Thai Units: Any Laotian cities: 1 x firebase, 2 x 2 infantry regiments [Vol-1, Vol-2]. Allied Air Available: 1 x CIA Air Commando, 1 x Lao Air Commando, 1 x Cambodian Air Commando. Allied SOG Available: 1 x Thai PARU. 34.2 1972 Communists (Communist sets up second): NVA C2: 6 VC C2: 4 Communist Controlled Bases: All in North Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, plus all Communist bases in South Vietnam, except Svay Rieng, 367 and 354 (in

Cambodia). Place a Base Destroyed marker on the Iron Triangle hex, Base hexes 367 and 354, and Svay Rieng. Communists also control Khe Sanh. Note: Communist units may set up in enemy ZOCs. VC regiments are picked at random. NVA Units: (1) North Vietnam: 1 x 6 division, 1 x 5 division, 3 x 2 armor, 3 x 2 sappers, 1 x 1 regiment. (2) Laos: 1 x 6 division, 1 x 5 division, 2 x 4 divisions, 1 x 2 sapper, 1 x 1 regiment, 559 Transportation Group. (3) Cambodia: 2 x 5 divisions, 3 x 4 division, 1 x 2 armor, 2 x 2 sapper, 1 x 1 regiment. (4) B-1 Front: 1 x 5 division. (6) Delta Front: 2 x 1 regiment. (7) Garrisons: 1 x 2 each in all Communist base hexes except the Iron Triangle. VC Units: (1) B-4 Front: 1 x regiment. (2) B-1 Front: 1 x regiment. (3) B-3 Front: None (4) B-2 Front: None (5) Saigon Front: 1 x regiment. (6) Delta Front: 4 x regiments. (7) Cadres available: 2 total. (8) Garrisons: 1 x "1" (VC) in Khe Sanh. (9) Permanently eliminated: 8 x cadre. Supply: 7 total. Place on any Communist base areas in North Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Dummy units: 7 total. Place on any communist units and/or bases in North Vietnam, Laos and/or Cambodia. Communist Shock Effect: (1) Communist Supply: All Communist units are automatically supplied on Turns 1 and 2, including attack supply, regardless of location. They still have to expend supply units if they want to conduct Maximum Attack Supply. (2) Communist Surprise. Skip the Allied Defensive Air Phase on Turn 1. (3) Communist Coordination. On Turn 1, NVA units may not cooperate in attacks with VC units. (4) Laos. On the first turn following any Allied land unit entering Laos: Communists receive 1 x 4 NVA division (place as a normal reinforcement). Exception: Allied units which began the scenario in Laos and SOG units do not trigger this. This unit is received only once per game.

Campaign Game only (additional): Following units are placed in any hexes not containing Allied units. NVA in Laos: NVA 1 x 4, 2 x 1 regiments. Pathet Lao in Laos: 1 x 1 regiment.
