INTRODUCTION TO THE BULATS B1 WORDLIST
The BULATS B2 Wordlist is a list of 3400 words to help teachers preparing students to
achieve a B1 pass in the a!"ridge BULATS e#a!$ %t is not e#pected that students at this
level will &now 100' of the words on the list( "ut if the) can achieve so!e fa!iliarit) with
*0' of these ite!s( the) will "e well placed to reach their target level$
BACKGROUND TO THE LIST
The list is "ased in part on the a!"ridge +S,L B+ -reli!inar) Wordlist$ .owever( it
includes a "roader range of language to cover different t)pes of survival +nglish as well as
other topics included in the BULATS e#a!$
As with the B+ -reli!inar) Wordlist( the list focuses on high/fre0uenc) words in a
wor&place conte#t and it covers receptive voca"ular) 1words that the candidates is e#pected
to understand "ut which are not the focus of the 0uestion2 as well as productive voca"ular)
1words the candidate needs to &now in order to answer the 0uestion2$ %n addition( words
co!!on in "oth written and spo&en +nglish have "een included( as have words fro! !ore
for!al or infor!al registers$
The wordlist does not provide an e#haustive list of all the words that appear in either the
BULATS online or paper/"ased e#a!$ 3or does it atte!pt to provide all the words necessar)
for use in the Spea&ing or Writing e#a!s$ Therefore( students should not confine their stud)
to the wordlist alone$
HOW THE LIST IS ORGANIZED
B1 and A2 words
The list includes words on the A2 wordlist and these are italicized$ Words that are not in
italics are only in the B1 list$
