A Word from the Pastor... A Word from the Pastor...

OCTOBER, 2013
Let me shine Seventh Annual
Votuur 11, Issur 10
We invite our neighbors to come to the
Lords table to join us in building up the
body of Christ.
MISSION STATEMENT:
It is easy to be disappointed with one another in our life together in Zion Evangeli-
cal Lutheran Church. I know the kind of pastor I want to be but I cannot live up to
that vision. My participation (read priority) in congregational life revolves around
a Notre Dame football game. Believe me, sometimes I am as disappointed and frus-
trated as you with sermons that I have preached. Even now you may be adding
some more disappointments to the list.
I have been disappointed with you. You are known to resist new ideas. Your par-
ticipation is lacking for some of the simplest tasks --- any volunteers for coee hour
or introducing yourself to someone you do not know? Sometimes you will stay
away from worship to drink coee in morning fellowship with the New York
Times; or you are working to catch up; or, -------
Together, our disappointments may remove any doubts we may have had about
the power of original sin.
But somehow the Holy Spirit works through my imperfect ministry in this imperfect con-
gregation to change the world with the good news of Jesus Christ. Here are some glimps-
es of the Spirits work among us!
Look at the holy work and community that came to life with Gods work Our
hands Sunday. Our hands joined Christs own as we shared meals, fellowship,
and hope.
Here is the Let Me Shine Preschooler at the dinner table, teaching his parents how
to make the sign of the cross while praying, God be in my head. God be in my
heart. God be on the le of me, God be on the right of me. Amen.
Listen to the holy hubbub with fellowship shared in Salmon Run, small groups,
coee conversations and all the other ways we share joy and sorrow.
Notice the ways we speak the truth in love as we move to building an inclusive
church with a new welcome statement.
And, behold, see all our disappointments melt into the forgiveness shared and
lived out in Christs presence among us: The peace of the Lord be with you always.
And also with you.
In and through Christ,
Pastor Steve Klemz

View from the Pew:

Now that the summer is over, those of us who arrive at Zion for the
10:30am service discover that the south parking lot is much more crowded.
That's a good thing.
Inside the church, there's a flurry of activity. That's even better. It means
that Sunday School has resumed. The transition between Sunday School
classes being dismissed and the service beginning is often frantic and
chaotic, but the presence of those children gives life to Zion. That's why I
have so much respect for the administrators, teachers and aides of the
Sunday School program, who make a huge contribution to the
congregation. It's a tough job. The rewards are great, but teaching requires
considerable patience. I'll always remember how third-graders Chris
Mogren, J oel Grussendorf, Sarah Ashburn and J onas Helgren made it their
weekly mission to test my patience in class, and they usually won. Yet
nearly two decades later, I still feel bonded to them.
I'll always remember being selected to present their confirmation
class to the congregation. Maybe I shouldn't have turned that
occasion into something resembling a celebrity roast, but I
considered it an opportunity for further bonding.

Proposed Welcome Statement from the
Zion Congregation Council:
If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything
old has passed away; see, everything has become new!
All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through
Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation. 2
Corinthians 5:17-18
We are Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, committed
to being a radically loving and welcoming community
of faith in J esus Christ.
As a community of God, striving to be open to all
people, we welcome all to join us.
We rejoice in the manner in which diversity has
enriched, nurtured, and challenged the life and
ministry we share in Christ, and we intentionally
embrace actions and attitudes within the Church that
will not inhibit access to Word and Sacrament
because of age, race, socio-economic or marital
status, physical or mental capacities, gender identity,
sexual orientation or those who are disenfranchised.
We are showered by grace.
We are a Reconciling in Christ community.

board members of Let Me Shine! Preschool in Sunday

an air of surprise when the congregauon saw 23 people
standing before us. Hopefully, we will conunue to be
surprised by the ministry of Let Me Shine!, as we hear of
the many ways the Gospel is proclaimed in word and in
deed among the 109 students enrolled in the school this
