The term alternative attracts many scholars attention but also the blurred limits of alternative media Atton points this out by giving an example of what criteria certain publishers, namely, the editors of Alternatives in Print apply to determining whether a medium is alternative or not:

The Publisher has to be non-commercial, demonstrate for basic concern for ideas, not the concern for profit, is the motivation for publication. The subject matter of their publications should focus on social responsibility or creative expression, or usually a combination of both. Finally, it is enough for publishers to define themselves as alternative publishers.

The new media


Old media was primarily linear. Easy to track down because the content has a beginning and end. Easy for extensive references, one article leads to another from the reference list and bibliography New media has far more dynamic I part because user access the content in a non linear manners. User recreate or remix media content in a nonlinear manner to fit individuals interest and needs.

Indie film

Independent film, produce outside of the main system of the mainstream film studios or a subsidiaries of a major film studios. Mostly are low budget film. Created with a small budget and content vary not for commercial purposes, but for public betterment. It is distinguished by film makers content and style Some break the norms of the mainstream content and ideology No market place and demand like motion pictures. It is released in smaller scale and screen locally or at international film festival Can be marketed in large scale if budget permits

Indie film

Indie film nowadays are not only scripted action by actors it also in a form of documentaries. Some film makers use it as channel to send out the messages. Many visuals are more likely captures and film experimentations and arts of the directors. Many if the content are strong and insightful Some content are implicit and explicit manner

Many actor, directors, screen writer and scriptwriter started from indie film. independent film like Reservoir Dogs, Little Miss Sunshine, or Juno are successful indie film and have won awards. Independent movie-making has also resulted in the proliferation and re-popularization of short films and short film festivals. Full-length films are often showcased at film festivals such as the Sundance Film Festival, the Slamdance Film Festival, the South By Southwest film festival, the Raindance Film Festival, ACE Film Festival, or the Cannes Film Festival.
