Different file formats on a desktop

There are two different types of file types that allow the file to be saved; these are called a raster file, a vector file or a Meta file. Raster File: A raster file uses pixel data to store data. If you were to increase the size of the file you will notice that it uses pixel to make the picture. The more pixels there are the better the quality would be. A camera and scanner will use a raster file to produce the work. Vector File: A vector file uses mathematic equations (such as points, line, curve, shape or polygon) to save data. Vector files would stay in really high quality no matter how much you were to zoom in. Not all computers support vector graphics, so you may not be able to use it on some desktops. Metafile: This type of files allows you to hold different types of files at the same time. Graphics Meta files can hold both vector and raster files because it uses both formats.

PDF

PDF was made in 1993 and PDF stands for Portable Document Format. This file is a Meta file which means that it uses both raster (which uses pixel data) and vector file which means that the quality of the document or file will stay really good. PDF is used to open things like application software, hardware and documents. PDF can be opened on any system because it doesnt run on any specific program, so it varies in where it can open. It is a small file so it is easy to share with anyone that you may want to send it to. However PDF cannot be manipulated and this includes images, so once they have been saved to the format they cannot be edited by another computer if you have sent it. This could also be an advantage because of copyright and if you dont want anyone to adjust what you have originally done. Some examples of when you would use a PDF file would be when you want to mark long documents or if you have your own website and you dont want anyone to take your idea or your project.

PSD

PSD was made in 2003 and PSD stands for Photoshop document. This file is a raster file which means it uses pixel data. A PSD file can store image with support, but only images that are from Photoshop. It only has a limit of 3 Gigabytes (30,000 pixels). Some of these may include things such as text, transparency and layers with masks. Photoshop has another name that is sometimes called PSB which stands for Photoshop Big (aka large document format). A PSB extends the file format to 4 Exabytes. PSD allows the file to be stored in layers, so that if you would like to edit something you can go back to it how it was saved. It can also be imported to other software programs like after effects for special films effect. It can also be manipulated to vector graphics so that it can have a better quality and it would be easy to make any changes without losing any of your previous work. However due to the largeness of the file so it would need to be saved as a smaller file if you wish to share it with others. PSD doesnt work with all programs software and the vector graphics are very limited and specialist software might used to be able to use it well.

GIF. GIF was made in the 1987 and stands for graphics interchange format. This is a raster file meaning it uses pixel data to open up its file. GIF is widely supported on internet and you can use it anywhere. There is little loss of compression and transparency due to the format of the file. It is common and easy to use to make any animated programs that you want to make. GIF only supports a palette, it is not compatible with a picture with many different shades of colours and if the picture is realistic it wont be able to use all the colours in the picture so it might stay in one shade. There is also a loss in compression and the transparency is limited due to the loss of compression.

T.I.F.F TIFF was made in 1968 and its called Tagged Image File Format. It is mostly used in the image editing industry and it is also used for publishing other document. This is a raster file, which means that is uses pixel data to open up the files and pictures. TIFF is also a manipulation documents meaning that you can edit and change things a lot of times as you like. TIFF is a supported by an image manipulation application; it does this by publishing, scanning, faxing and word processing. It also uses character recognition and some other application. TIFF is widely supported by many formats and it is also used as a scanner. Both MAC and Windows computers support it, and it supported by them too. However the down side is that it is not supported by some Web Browsers. It also does not automatically compress files, so they are left as large documents and would take up space on your desktop. The most times that you might use this file is probably when would want to have a large image to be printed on, such as a billboard. The file extension for TIFF is . tiff , or .tif

CGM CGM was made in 1986 and its name is Computer Graphics Metafile. It is a Meta file, which means that it uses both raster and vector, files. Since it uses raster file that means that it uses pixel data to cooperate the documents to open them and save them. On the other hand by it using a vector file it means that it uses mathematical equations to enable to save documents. It is a free file- which means that it works on any system. It also has an internationally system, so it means that it can work anywhere that you want t open it. This is good when you would like to work away from home or at another destination around the world.

JPG JPG stands for Joint photo graphics experts group. JPG is a raster file which means that it uses pixel data to open the files. The uniform type of JPG is public.jpeg and the magic name are ff and d8. JPG compression is used in a number of image file formats. It is a common image format used by a lot of digital cameras and other photographic image capturing devices. JPG is also the most used image storing and transmitting file on the web.

File name extension; - jpg, - jpeg, - jpe, - jif, -jfif, - jfi. JPG only supports an image size of 65535 x 65535. It widely supports digital cameras and the internet. It also compresses the file, so that means that the file size is decreased. However JPG is not suitable for simple pictures that have little colour to them. It cant support anything with any difference in brightness.

BMP BMP stands for Bitmap Windows File. It has many other names but the only other name that is known is Device Independent Bitmap. BMP is a raster graphics image format which means that it uses pixel data to open the files- it is used to file and store digital images. It is able to store 2D digital images these are monochrome and colour various colour depths and colour profile. This file format does not compress the files so they are left as a large file however it can only support Windows and Microsoft documents and not supported by any other documents. The image file consist of fixed size structure which as sized in different structures at a random sequence. The identifier is com.microsoft.bmp

PNG PNG stands for Portable Network Graphics. This file is a raster file which means that it uses pixel data. PNG was an improved replacement for Graphics Interchange Format. It is also the most used lossless image compression format on the internet. There are some down sides to this file. One of the disadvantages is that it doesnt support any multi-image file or animated pictures. It also only supports a palette based image, which means that is takes a maximum of 32 colours, so if you have a very detailed painting or picture it would use the shame shades in some parts of the picture. If you have the oldest version of PNG it makes some of the files pixelated of blurred. However it does have advantages such as it saves the pictures in high quality and it supports a high lossless compression. PNG also allows you to transfer images from anywhere onto the internet. The uniform type identifier is public.png.
