Martin Luther King, Jr.s March on Washington SPEECH CONTEST


I. Speech Contest Theme: I HAVE A DREAM. MY DREAM FOR INDIA IS To commemorate the 50th anniversary of The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom led by American civil rights activist Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. on August 28, 1963. II. Speech Requirements: The competition will be in English. The speech must be an original work of the student. The speech should not exceed 3 minutes. The speech must not defame, misrepresent or contain disparaging remarks about any person, country, or companies. The speech must not contain sexually explicit or suggestive, or derogatory matter that will be offensive to any ethnic, racial, gender, religious, professional or age group or the disabled. The speech must not communicate messages inconsistent with the positive images and / or goodwill to which the U.S. Consulate General, Chennai, Anna University, and Youthink wish to associate; and be in violation of any law or otherwise. The speech must not promote alcohol, illegal drugs, tobacco, firearms / weapons (or the use of any of the foregoing), any activities that may appear unsafe or dangerous, or any particular political agenda or message. III. Eligibility: The competition is open to students from any college or university in Chennai. The contestants must be between 18 23 years old.

IV. Selection of Winners: All registered contestants will be invited to deliver their speech in front of a panel of judges composed of representatives of the U.S. Consulate General, Chennai and Indian judges on August 1, 2013 (2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.) at TAG Auditorium, Anna University, Kotturpuram, Chennai 600025. The criteria for judging are: (a) Originality, (b) Message, (c) Effectiveness, and (c) Presentation. No audio/visual support will be allowed to enhance the speech. Contestant will not be allowed to refer to any electronic gadgets including cell phones while delivering their speech. The panel of judges will select the top three speakers. The decision of the judges will be final. The three finalists will be invited to deliver their speech at a public event on August 8, 2013 in the presence of high level and distinguished guests which will be covered by the media. V. Terms & Rights: By registering for the speech contest you agree that: Your speech is your original work and not copied from any other work and do not infringe upon the rights of any third party and to the extent any elements were created by a third party. While you retain ownership of your original speech, you will grant the U.S. Consulate General, Chennai the right to publish, transmit, broadcast, televise, digitize, or otherwise use your speech in any manner, form, or format now or hereinafter created. An entry does not guarantee that your speech will be selected as a winner. By entering the speech contest, each contestant understands and grants to the U.S. Consulate General, Chennai permission for his/her speech to be posted on the Consulates Flickr, Facebook, and web pages in perpetuity throughout the world for viewing by online visitors. The U.S. Consulate General, Chennai is not responsible for any unauthorized third party use of the speech. The organizers, namely U.S. Consulate General, Anna University, and Youthink reserve the right to disqualify any participant for any reason, with sole and absolute discretion. They are under no obligation to disclose why a participant has been disqualified other than that the speech was ineligible under the official rules.
