Long hours, hundreds of E-mails and no sleep: does these sounds like satisfying job?

Q 1: Do you think that only certain individuals are attracted to these types of job? or is it the characteristics of the jobs themselves that are satisfying? The jobs seem extreme in nature with exceptional long and irregular hours of more than the normal 40- hour work week, constant travels and serious lack of work-life balance. Only certain individuals would be attracted to these jobs. These individuals are willing to sacrifice family time for job sake. When we talk about an individual, or certain group of individuals, job satisfaction solely depends on their perspective. For them, job satisfaction need not be high salary, better position or other job conditions. What factors may motivate us, may not give us happiness.Personality plays a very important role in job satisfaction. People who believe in their inner self and basic competence are more satisfied than those who dont have self core evaluation .Hence only certain individuals are attracted to these types of jobs, and its not just the characteristics of the job. Looking at the extreme nature of the jobs they are far from satisfying any normal worker, even if compensation is considered, but the jobs would be satisfying to a special breed of people who find the jobs as challenging. The three individuals displayed high levels of job satisfaction, job involvement and organizational commitment that enable them to accept the hardships as a positive challenge. These individuals are positive people because negative people are usually not satisfied with their jobs, more so if the jobs are as stressful as mentioned in the case. These individuals also have positive core self-evaluation that contributed to their being more satisfied with their jobs even under extreme conditions. .

2. Given that the three individuals we just read about tend to be satisfied with their jobs, how might this satisfaction relate to their job performance, citizenship behavior, and turnover? Answer * Job satisfaction of the employees is an important factor because most of the time it determines the commitment and respect of the employees towards their employer and organization. The attitudes and the behaviors of the workers would vary based on the level of job satisfaction. For example: one with a higher level of satisfaction would be more dedicated towards his or her respective work and do it with full potential but the one with a lower level of job satisfaction would tend to be absent and would not perform as expected. Therefore job satisfaction is a crucial factor. As these three individuals are satisfied with their jobs this means that they are happy workers, i.e. they take a great deal of interest in their work. They perform their respected work with all the dedication and enthusiasm and this is why they tend to be efficient. As they are satisfied this means they are happy to do their work, so all their designated work that would be done would be both efficient and productive and ultimately this would lead to the overall efficiency and productivity of the organization these four individuals are working with. Organization citizenship behavior is discretionary behavior that is not part of an employees formal job requirements but that nevertheless promotes the effective functioning of the organization. Organizations always prefer those who tends to help others while working on a team, avoid unwanted controversies, volunteer for extra work, respect the organizational rules and regulations and other behaviors which makes the employee do more than what is expected of them. Employees would only show organizational citizenship behavior when they are satisfied with their job and surroundings.

One classic definition of organization development comes from Richard Beckhards 1969 Organization Development: Strategies and Models: Organization Development is an effort (1) planned, (2) organization-wide, and (3) managed from the top, to (4) increase organization effectiveness and health through (5) planned interventions in the organizations "processes, using behavioral-science knowledge. Other definitions from leaders in Organization Development Network: "OD is a field directed at interventions in the processes of human systems (formal and informal groups, organizations, communities, and societies) in order to increase their effectiveness and health using a variety of disciplines, principally applied behavioral sciences. OD requires practitioners to be conscious about the values guiding their practice and focuses on achieving its results through people." Arnold Minors, Arnold Minors & Associates, Toronto, Canada "Organization Development is a body of knowledge and practice that enhances organizational performance and individual development, viewing the organization as a complex system of systems that exist within a larger system, each of which has its own attributes and degrees of alignment. OD interventions in these systems are inclusive methodologies and approaches to strategic planning, organization design, leadership development, change

management, performance management, coaching, diversity, and work/life balance." Matt Minahan, MM & Associates, Silver Spring, Maryland
