C.

Select Fill Material Select fill material shall be composed only of inorganic material and shall have 100% passing the 50 mm sieve analysis and from 0-20% passing the No. 200 sieve. That portion of the material passing the No. 40 sieve shall have a maximum liquid limit of 35 and maximum plasticity index of 12. Attenbergs limits are not required for select fill material with less than 15% fines passing the No. 200 sieve.

Part 3 Execution 3.01 Excavation A. Excavation for Structures Excavation shall be made accurately to the lines, grades and elevations shown on the drawings. Trenches and foundation pits shall be of sufficient size to permit the placement and removal of forms for the full length and width of structure footings and foundation shown. Rock or other hard material shall be cleaned of loose debris and cut to a firm surface, either level, stepped, or serrated, as shown or as directed. B. Hand Excavation Hand Excavation will be required for work adjacent to the existing utilities as specified by Consultants Representative or the utility agencys requirements. 3.02 Fill A. Fill Fill work shall consist of hauling, placing, compacting and finishing fill areas to grade as shown on the plans. B. Placing Fill Fill materials to slabs on grade, pits, and sidewalks shall be placed in successive horizontal lifts or layers not to exceed 0.2 meters in depth. Each layers, before starting the next, shall be levelled and smoothed by means of power driven graders or other suitable equipment. Hauling and spreading equipment shall be operated over the full width of each layer. C. Compaction For foundation static loads over 320 KPA (3 tons/sq.ft.) and foundation for vibrating equipment, the base of the foundation shall be compacted to 85 percent of the maximum density for cohesion less soils or 95 percent of the maximum density as determined by ASTM D1557 for cohesive materials.

When the backfill material cannot clearly be classified as cohesive or cohesionless both relative and proctor density tests must be performed per the above paragraph. The backfill shall then be compacted to the greater density. Prior to the compaction backfill, a field test section using the intended compaction equipment shall be performed to determine the proper lift thickness to achieve the necessary density requirement. D. Backfilling Adjacent to Structures Backfill shall be placed and compacted uniformly in such a manner as to prevent wedging action or eccentric loading upon or adjacent to the structures. Slopes bounding or within areas to be backfilled shall be stepped or serrated to prevent sliding of the fill. During the backfilling operations and in the formation embankments, equipments that will overload the structure in passing over and compacting this fill shall not be used. E. Borrow Pit Prior to importing borrow materials and/or transporting fill material to work site areas requiring fill, the Consultant Representative reserves the right to inspect and make test of the fill materials to conform with the specifications. Fill materials which does not meet the requirements of specifications shall not be used and, if on the work site, shall be removed from the work site at the Contractors expense. F. Over Excavation The depth of excavations for any structure below the finish grade should be true to level required and as shown in the drawings. This condition applies to the case for building foundations, grade beams, below pits and underground water tank. The Contractor shall avoid over cut as maintaining the stability of the subgrade. Where over-cutting is made, the Contractor shall fill the depth of cut by casting a lean concrete hence filling by natural soil is not permitted.
