By Aex Broseker September 2013 Edition

PHA President
Molly Alsobrook
First, I would like to thank the advisors for all their hard work. The Panhellenic Association is one of a handful of schools that has won the Achievement Award for the past school year. Some things I am working on is changing the way we do Presidents forum. I am hoping our new meeting type will be more beneficial and helpful for the Presidents. Next, we as an executive board are meeting with each chapter executive boards to introduce ourselves and answer questions chapters may have.

VP of Public Relations
Alex Broseker I am very excited to be hosting the Second Annual Student Leaders Dinner with my counterpart on IFC this Thursday October 3rd! Leaders from all over campus and all different organizations will be coming to Riggs Alumni Center from 6-8pm to enjoy a catered dinner and a guest speaker! My goal for this event is to bring together leaders from across campus to network and exchange information. I am also working on my community PR item for all of the Panhellenic sororities! I am designing a Greek Terps tshirt that all of the sororities will tie dye together on the row! It will be a great way to bring everyone together!

VP of Recruitment
Lauralee Fangmeyer
On Wednesday, September 25th, the recruitment team completed interviews and sent out the list of Rho Gammas for the Spring 2014 Recruitment Season. The Rho Gamma class will begin next Wednesday, October 2nd, at 8:30pm. The year, we have added a new element to the recruitment team an operations committee. This committee is composed of 510 women who will be trained as Rho Gammas and will serve as replacements should a Rho Gamma fall ill or be unable to serve for any reason. This committee will also help with other aspects of recruitment from a PHA standpoint, such as helping PNMs with directions in between rounds and assisting the recruitment team with other tasks during the extent of the recruitment period. Also, from surveying both advisors and Recruitment Chairs we have gathered information about how recruitment runs and some

problems that have come up in the past, and are adjusting the way we plan recruitment accordingly. This includes slightly altering the responsibilities of individual Rho Gammas, the timing and organization of how PNMs enter and exit each party, etc. I am excited for all the positive changes being made, and its looking like this will be a very successful recruitment season!

VP of Academic Affairs
Kristen Dzeidzic As PHA VP of Academic Affairs, I have been working on some exciting things! Since returning to school, I collaborated with DFSL and the Career Center to promote two Greek Networking events on September 18th and 25th. Each went really well and provided greeks with the opportunity to practice networking and chat with potential employers. I am also setting up meetings with chapters to work on academic programming and grades. Some chapters greatly increased their GPAs from Fall '12 to Spring '13 and we want to continue to see improvement among these and all Panhellenic chapters! More events to look forward to this semester include PHA's study hours competition during Homecoming Week and an Academic Focus Week in November.

This month I have been working on the programming for Hazing Prevention week! To start off the week, we created a giant chalkboard display that had the phrases "I think hazing is..." and "I would stop hazing by..." The display was located in the middle of campus and was a great way to reach out to other organizations. The boards sparked a lot of conversations across campus and raised awareness for hazing prevention. The rest of Hazing Prevention Week will consist of an open forum sponsored by Sigma Kappa on hazing and disrespectful behavior and a showing of the movie Hazed. I have also been working on planning the New Member Alcohol Speaker which will take place in the beginning of October!

Throughout my term so far I have strived to educate and better the women in the Panhellenic community. I have done this by, continuing Letter's Off Days, continuing and improving the Jr. PHA meetings, and by holding community events. In the upcoming semester I will be finalizing the IMPACT retreat, which will be the first weekend of October. PHA will also be hosting a fall speaker and spring speaker. The fall speaker will be on November 20th and will be having multiple presentations. One of my major goals was to bring Circle of Sisterhood back on the UMD campus and to make a fundraiser that would spread awareness of the foundation to all of greek life. This goal will be accomplished this semester by holding a DJ off in Richie Colosseum. This fundraiser should have around 3,000 guests and will have multiple ways of raising awareness and money for Circle of Sisterhood.

VP of Community Affairs
Hannah Klein This semester started off on a great foot! My committee members and I are busy planning Homecoming which is the week of October 20th! We are so excited to be working together with DFSL planning the Centennial celebration. My assistant and I are also working towards encouraging more community service on campus and starting to schedule monthly meetings with each community service chairs in all 15 chapters. I am also excited to have two of my committee members attending all UGC and NPHC executive board meetings. We are making strides in bringing all four councils together. I'm excited to see how the rest of the semester plays out!

Currently I'm working on our budget to refine the money we have allotted to each board member. I want to reduce spending since the last board went over budget a bit so that I can leave the next board with some cushion.

Delta Phi Epsilon

Currently we are gearing up for homecoming with Kappa Sig. November 5th, 6-8pm we have our annual Deepher Dude event, which raises money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Cystic Fibrosis is a disease that decreases the lifespan of its victims drastically, and is very close to our hearts. The event involves each fraternity (as well as several sports teams) getting paired up with a sister of DPhiE who coaches them on a routine, which will be performed the day of the event in Ritchie Colosseum. This year's theme is movie soundtracks, so each team must perform their dance only to songs from movie soundtracks. We are currently fundraising for the event now, asking each sister to raise $30.

Kappa Delta
On Sunday, October 13, Kappa Delta will be hosting our second annual Shamrock Dunk N Dodge tournament to benefit Prevent Child Abuse America! Teams comprised of six players will gather on Chapel Fields to compete in a dodgeball tournament with a twist. Instead of playing with traditional dodgeballs, players will attempt to master the five ds of dodgeball with paint-soaked sponges. The team that is able to dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge the best will not only take home a special prize, but also be named the 2013 Dunk N Dodge champions! The event is bound to get messy, but its worth it since all proceeds go to child abuse prevention efforts.

PHA Grad Assistant Ericka Brownlee

I am a first year masters student within the Higher Education Administration program and will be serving as our new graduate assistant to the PHA Advisor for the 20132014 Academic Year. I will exclusively be helping in the area of multicultural programming academic management, and member development. I am a graduate of Howard University and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

Sigma Kappa
Earlier this month, Sigma Kappa hosted its second Waffle House in the beginning of September to raise money for the Sigma Kappa Foundation, which contributes to Alzheimers research. Members of the University of Maryland and Greek communities came out to the event to eat some delicious homemade waffles and support a great cause. Sigma Kappa plans

to continue hosting the Waffle Houses throughout the

semester, so be on the lookout for the next event! On Saturday October 19th, Sigma Kappa will be hosting its first annual Sigma Kapture the Flag Tournament from 9:30 am to noon on Fraternity Row! All proceeds from the tournament will be donated to the Sigma Kappa Foundation.

Alpha Phi
On Saturday, September 28th the sisters of Alpha Phi will be hosting our ninth annual Red Dress Gala at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center. As our largest philanthropy event, a lot of preparation goes into perfecting this spirited evening. The fully catered event will have a raffle, live auction, and entertainment, including a speech from notable Johns Hopkins Medical Center's cardiologist Dr. Lili Barouch.Sisters, family, friends, and supporters from other University of Maryland organizations (Greek and otherwise) all come out in formal attire for a night centered around raising awareness for the Alpha Phi Foundation. This philanthropy organization focuses on various aspects of womens empowerment, but especially womens heart health. You may be surprised to hear the heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States. Alpha Phi events such as this one strive to raise funds to fight that statistic.Last year, over $10,000 was raised in one night, with even more optimistic expectations for this year. We are proud and thankful to have an amazing collection of co-sponsors: Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Epsilon Phi, Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Phi Alpha, FIJI, Kappa Alpha Theta, Lambda Chi Alpha, Phi Delta Theta, Sigma Chi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Tau Kappa Epsilon and Zeta Psi. Come out to support the sisters of Alpha Phi with a night full of delicious food, exciting prizes, and red!

Alpha Epsilon Phi

Throughout this month, the members of the Alpha Mu chapter of Alpha Epsilon Phi have been actively participating in many events on campus. On September 6, many members attended the Welcome Back BBQ, which took place on Fraternity Row and marked the 100th year anniversary of fraternity and sorority life on campus. It was a great opportunity to hang out with sisters, listen to music, and enjoy the food provided by the UMD dining caterers. On September 9, we organized a booth at the University of Maryland Meet the Greeks, which took place on the academic mall in front of McKeldin Library. Our spring pledge class enthusiastically promoted our chapter and got a lot of freshmen excited for recruitment. On October 18, we will be hosting AEPhis fourth annual Wingman competition on Fraternity Row. This is a well-known philanthropy event that challenges members from different chapters to a wingeating contest in order to be crowned Wing-man or Wingqueen! All proceeds for this event go towards the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatrics AIDS Foundation.

PHA Advisor
Kahlin McKeown As the new Panhellenic Association Advisor as a part of the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life, I am really looking forward to building relationships with our undergraduate members and advisors to our organizations. Currently, we are working to improve and streamline current programs and events, while focusing on what is best for the community and reasoning behind decision-making. I am very much open to hearing feedback about the community, so please feel free to reach out if you ever have an idea, feedback, or thought to improve something we currently do. Hopefully we will have some revisions to the PHA bylaws completed within the next month or so, as well as some updates and consolidation of recruitment rules/agreements. Stay tuned for advisor meeting dates! I look forward to working with each of you as you work to support your chapters, and thank you so much for your commitment to the fraternity experience at the University of Maryland!
