SUBSTITUTION TABLE TECHNIQUE: Substitution tables are a very effective way to support the learners to make a statement by giving them the correct form only language wise (the sentence structure = syntax) without giving away the content. In combination with CLIL and TBL substitution tables can help learners with a rather weak or limited level of the target language to express their thoughts and ideas about the content.. A substitution table should be easy to use and NOT an additional inhibition to produce language (SPEAKING / WRITING) . It is the teachers task to tailor cut this language support according to the needs of the class different language levels (differentiation). There are few rules to respect when designing a substitution table: - The sentence has to be cut up into its different constituents = phrases. A phrase itself consists of different word classes. (e.g. noun / pronoun + verb) word class: noun + verb word class: noun subclass: pronoun it word class: verb subclass: +/is word class: adjectives right correct nice polite impolite
I think
sentence - Respect the different word classes (nouns, verbs) and their morphological characteristics (plural forms, negative forms of verbs). If needed1 draw a column for each class and a line for each morphological sub-class if it has an effect on the form of other word classes. word class: noun subclass: pronoun I word class: verb word class: noun subclass: pronoun it isnt sentence word class: verb subclass: + / - form s think would say word class: adjectives good right correct nice polite impolite
When two neighbouring word classes are represented by only one word they can be put together into the same column depending on the language focus the teacher has got in mind.

USE OF SUBSTITUTION TABLE: Substitution tables can be used for oral (SPEAKING) and written (WRITING) production already at the learners initial stage. But dont forget that they need to be trained how to read a substitution table ! For learners at an initial stage (Us) the substitution table should be short and easy to use! Substitution tables for advanced learners (Ms & Os) can be more complex and extended to so called SPEAKING - or WRITING FRAMES in order to produce richer language covering more complex content.
