Propulsion Engineering Manager Technical management of propulsion systems for tactical unmanned air vehicle (Shadow UAV), small UAV (Aerosonde) and Micro Air Vehicle product lines. Power ranges from 1.3 to 70 hp including 2-stroke, 4-stroke reciprocating, and Wankel types. To address the resulting market void, developed strategic approach addressing the fundamentals: engine configuration, combustion technology, and supplier having the capability to support the end users in this market. Current work at Lycoming continues the implementation of this strategy. Provide technical evaluation, proposal support, and design of new technology IRaD efforts in areas of propulsion engines and vehicle integration. Including: conceptual design of the next generation in the Shadow series, electronic control system for the UEL 741 series Wankel engine, small gas turbine engines, high speed rotorcraft and other advanced platforms. Provide aircraft systems, primarily flight control and fuel, technical guidance and design evaluation. New Business technical proposal participation including propulsion for fixed wing, rotary wing, and other vertical lift technologies: Tier II (55 lb.), FCS class I (30 lb.), foreign sales of Shadow, FCS III ( 700 lb.), ground vehicles, and products for emerging unmanned systems opportunities. Member of aircraft conceptual design core teams; applied understanding of aircraft design including sizing, aerodynamics, structures, propulsion, electrical systems, aircraft monitoring, payloads, flight controls and communication systems. Mentor propulsion and other engineering and project staff in competencies and knowledge base required to engineer effective aircraft propulsion solutions. Supervision of engineering staff: daily tasking, training, staff empowerment, career development and counseling, hiring, and organization development. World class manufacturer of reciprocating aircraft engines. Program Manager Initiated program, generated business case, and lead new product development team for enhanced cylinder assembly that reduced octane requirement for use of alternative fuels, improved fuel consumption, improved power output, enhanced durability, and reduced production cost. The program went from inception through pre-production testing. Effort included gaining technical and financial support for the program from Marketing, Supply Chain, Engineering, Manufacturing and Quality Assurance. Senior Project Engineer Managed several concurrent product development projects including the completion and initial certification of the IO-580 series, Cessna T182T in flight detonation survey, liaison for ASTM avgas subcommittee, evaluation of alternative fuels including ethanol and petroleum based fuels. Developed tuned induction systems, and supported electronic engine controls projects. Provided Lycoming legal department with technical support of crankshaft investigation which included evaluation of current systems and design, internal and independent analysis with verification testing, coordination and reporting of results, and providing testimony. Managed aircraft integration support programs for several developmental, general aviation aircraft. Provided warranty claim evaluation and root cause failure analysis. Collaborated with manufacturing, quality or engineering to implement corrective actions. Managed aircraft engine type certification of the IO-580 to FAR Part 33. This included: development of the certification plan, documenting and capturing the certification data, analysis of test results and test reporting. Worked closely with the FAA DER for certification and inspections of conformance. Worked with supply chain, manufacturing, and quality to provide the necessary data for the FAA. Supervision of engineering staff members and skilled union labor for daily tasking. This included definition of tasks, technical mentoring, work breakdown, and status. Product Development Engineer Accomplished product development projects such as certification testing for Cessna 206 restart, support of NASA GAP proposal for general aviation propulsion technology advancement, and evaluation of after market oil additives for improved performance. Introduced a Product Development Process to improve performance and engineering productivity. This was done by evaluating examples from industry and university work and tailoring a process to implement at Lycoming. Developed processes for automation of engine test data analysis. Automated data analysis and reporting engine test data to reduce report generation time and increase the report accuracy using Excel and C. Supervision of junior engineering staff including co-op students.

Gas turbine engine components, blades and vanes. Product/Process Engineer: Wide ranging responsibilities including: quality control, customer relations, scrap reduction, process documentation, tooling inspection and rework, and process improvement. This included work with ceramics and advanced materials for core manufacturing. Lead team that improved inspection yield from 23 to 71 percent, reduced cost by 84 percent, and decreased customer scrap rate for a challenging line of parts. Streamlined and clarified procedure system for manufacturing operations. Implemented improved material control system that reduced variation by 40 percent and scrap by 69 percent.
