Its election time, with voting day on Oct. 21, and that means signs will soon be adorning the roadways, doors will be knocked on and forums will be spoken at. Its a time when we get to hear about all the great things people want to do for each of our respective communities. Here in Strathmore there are 15 names to pay attention to. Some we know as they are hoping to return to council, and others are hoping for a chance to claim a spot in council chambers. The candidates running for council in Strathmore are Robert Antonisse, Allan Auger; Rocky Blokland, Doug Clarke, Pat Fule, Mark Giesbrecht, DaveHamRempel, Bob Sobol, ilton, Denise Peterson, John TelisaTebbutt, Brad Walls and John Whieldon. For mayor we have the incumbent Steve Grajczyk, who is being challenged by Michael Ell. The candidates will all be speaking at forums in town, like the one being held in the Town Council chambers on Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m. In Wheatland County, there are only candidates running for election for Divisions 2 and 3. Ken Sauve is stepping away this year, and those hoping to take his place are: Colin Smith; Kevin G. Miller; Rex Harwood; Ian Mast; Russell Smith; and Jacki Kirk. For Division 3 Don Vander Velde is hoping to keep his chair on council, while Donna Biggar is hoping for the chance to be the new face of Division 3. Councillors Alice Booth, Berniece Bland, Brenda Ann Knight, Glenn Koester and Ben Armstrong are all running unopposed and have been acclaimed. In Rockyford, current councillors Pam Seeley and Dixie OKeefe did not put their names in for re-election. Incumbents Leah Smith, Gerald Katterhagen, and Darcy Burke are looking for re-election. Greg Baillie, Wane Beerling, Dalia Cheshire, Natalie Desantis and Jayne Koester have added their names to the ballot. In Standard, your returning candidates are Ron Corbiell, Mark Clark, Adam Sommerfeldt, Alan Larsen. Martin Gauthier and Joe Pedersen are also running for a spot on council. Golden Hills School Division is electing new members to its trustees board. In Ward 1 Colleen Annette Eyjolfson, Barry Kletke and Larry Maerz will be running in the election. In ward 2 David Price has been acclaimed, in Ward 3 Sherri Nielsen has also been acclaimed. In Ward 4, which is Strathmore, originally incumbent Larry Tucker was the only name put forward. The nomination process was extended and Joyce Bazant put her name forward. Both of them are also acclaimed. In Ward 5 Corey Fisher and Alan Larsen are both vying for the trustee spot. The nominees for the village of Hussar were not released as of press time.

2nd Floor of the Aztec Building 106 - 304 - 3rd Avenue, Strathmore

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter After losing government funding for approximately $10,000 per year, Toddle Inn Daycare is now looking at ways to make up those funds. The government used to give all accredited centres quality support funding every year to purchase specific items for the children. The Toddle Inn Daycare, has two programs. One is daycare, which would receive $7,500 a year to buy equipment for programming and training for workshops and facility upgrades. For the Out of school care program, which is in the same building, Toddle Inn received about $2,500 per year. The government cut the funding in April, and since then, Toddle Inn staff and the board have been looking at ways to find new funding. One idea that was suggested is a Community Harvest Supper. I thought about this dinner, I would like to host it twice a year, that way we can just keep the cash flow going for the Toddle Inn, said Lisa Hodder, a member of the Toddle Inn Daycare board.

Were just trying to get the community out and involved so they know about the Toddle Inn. Then we decided were going to have a cake decorating contest as something different. The harvest supper will take place at the Hope Community Covenant Church on Oct. 2 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. There are 260 pre-printed tickets; anyone who purchases a ticket in advance can enter that ticket into a draw for two WestJet travel vouchers. There will also be tickets at the door, but those will not be eligible for the WestJet voucher draw. There will be a silent auction of the cakes entered in the cake-decorating contest. Following a fall theme is the only guideline. The dinner will be turkey and ham with all the fixings, said Hodder. Wed like to raise at least $10,000 that would cover us for the next year for toys and (other costs). Butwere hoping to host this twice a year so that we can keep cash flow going. If we only raise $5,000 great, every little bit helps for the daycare, said Hodder. Toddle Inn is non-profit and is also a registered charity that was incorporated in 1981. The Alberta government

subsidizes daycare for parents who are lower income and who go to a licensed facility, which Toddle Inn is. The current facility is in need of upgrades, both to the building and to the toys and equipment the children use. Roxanne Jones, director for Toddle Inn Daycare, is concerned about potential fee increases, but says its a wait and see scenario right now. It depends on if the Harvest supper is successful. We have to do something, because if we really increase the fees then parents wont be able to come here, even with the subsidy, said Jones. The building needs new siding, it was built in 1981, so we would like to put new siding on the building and we would like to upgrade the computers. Tickets for the Community Harvest Supper are selling for $15 for an adult, $10 for a youth or senior. Family meal tickets can also be purchased, which includes two adults and for kids, for $40. IN order to be entered into the cake-decorating contest all cakes must be dropped off at Hope Church between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Oct. 2. Tickets can be pre-purchased at Toddle Inn Daycare or by calling 403-9345139.

Nomination forms are ready for Business Awards

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter The Strathmore and District Chamber of Commerce is once again busy planning for the annual business awards that will be held on Oct. 23. The awards are a way for people to recognize businesses that has made a difference either with their products, services or both. Small and medium size businesses account for 99.8 per cent of all Canadian companies. For over 34 years the Business Development Bank of Canada has organized a Small Business Week, which runs from Oct. 20 to 26. Small businesses mean big business to the Canadian economy, says Joyce Bazant, Acting President of the Strathmore & District Chamber of Commerce in a press release. Supporting entrepreneurship is an important part of maintaining and growing our economy. The Strathmore & District Chamber of Commerce is committed to help small businesses flourish. Which is just one of many reasons why the annual Business Awards was first created and brought to Strathmore. Nomination forms are available on the Chambers website at www.strathmoredistrcitchamber.com or by going to the Chamber office at the Country Lane Mall, Bay A1, 510 Hwy #1. The deadline to nominate a business that has impressed you is Oct. 4.

WADEMSA contract talks get 6 month extension

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Alberta Health Services has added a six-month extension to contract talks with the Wheatland and District Emergency Medical Service Association (WADEMSA) after firing Alberta Health Services (AHS) Vice-President Chris Mazurkewich on Sept. 10. The current contract extension was set to expire on Sept. 30. On Sept. 13 Mazurkewich was supposed to have met with WADEMSA representatives, a meeting that had taken some time to put together. With the firing of five top AHS executives it is understandable why someone wasnt available to replace Mazurkewich at the Sept. 13 meeting. I have had contact with Alberta Health Services and they are committed to re-scheduling this meeting as promptly as possible and they are making themselves very accommodating to make that happen, said Rob Witty, operations director for WADEMSA. Witty said AHS basically told WADEMSA to set a meeting date and they will be there. Right now, Witty said, WADEMSA is trying to find the best time and date for everyone that should be involved in the meeting. I think well be meeting again in the next few weeks. The hardest part right now is harvest is kind of in full gear and I know a couple of our board members are in the agricultural field, said Witty. Strathmore-Brooks MLA Jason Hale was outraged when he heard the news that an extension was being given to contract talks. We need a decision now, its been going on for two years theyve been trying to negotiate a new contract and AHS is not working with them on this contract. Enough is enough, its time to quit jerking WADEMSAs chain, and lets make a decision. We know what the best decision is and theres no use for AHS continuing to delay it, we need them to sign WADEMSAs contract, said Hale. Hale has heard that in other areas AHS has waited a long amount of time and eventually that ambulance dispatch group couldnt function anymore and then AHS would take them over. My feeling is thats what theyre trying to do with WADEMSA. Its been two years, weve shown, WADEMSA has shown that they can run that ambulance service more efficient than AHS is running it and they can provide a better service than AHS is providing in some areas, said Hale. Its very unfortunate that AHS is still trying to play those games. Witty declined a chance to comment on how the current negotiations are going but did say he is still optimistic that a good resolution can be found in the end.

Downtown overlay bylaw approved

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter For months there has been discussion about an overlay for downtown that will help direct future development. The idea is to create a visually appealing impression and revitalize the downtown core. The overlay applies new criteria when a building either redevelops or has major renovations. What we are trying to do is were trying to create a visual appeal of streetscape, pedestrian orientation that will then encourage more people downtown, said Patricia Maloney, the contract planner retained to help with the project. She said Strathmore is very lucky as far as small towns go because there is a lot of mixed-use development and residential zoning in the core. Maloney said they are looking at including railway heritage and something they have called messy vibrancy, which is the colour and whimsy and artsy look. One part is to try and work with the arts community and some of the businesses in town to put a display in the windows of vacant buildings and give people something to see until the buildings are filled with new tenants. As a council we are restricted in what we can and cannot do with an area, certainly its illegal for us to try and forces businesses to stay in the downtown area and not move or to stay occupied, said Councillor Bob Sobol. In a democracy there are certain things you cant do and those are some of the things you cant do, this is in my opinion an effort to just focus on the positive and create an atmosphere thats going to welcome businesses into the downtown area. We want people to understand that we truly believe that businesses will be enhanced with even the smallest improvements, said Maloney. I think this was a great first step and I think it will lead into a full blown downtown revitalization strategy and I think its an exciting start. Council approved the bylaw at the Sept. 18 council meeting. Town continues Badlands partnership Cindy Amos, the new face to the Executive Leadership role at Canadian Badlands Limited, spoke to Town council during the Sept. 18 regular council meeting. She made a presentation before council regarding what Canadian Badlands is about and how it can be beneficial to stay a partner with the organization. In the past different directors have made presentations before council leading along the same lines, but to date the benefits have not been apparent. The last time you came to us we were promised all of the above, we didnt even get our names on the little placards that show the maps for things, said Councillor Earl Best. There was no mention of Strathmore, there was no dot for Strathmore, there was no nothing for Strathmore. I just find that it sounds like the same promises and Im not prepared again to have them broken. Councillor Pat Fule said he shared a lot of Bests views, but having met with Amos and Mayor Steve Grajczyk in the summer he believes that she could be the one to change things for the town with the Canadian Badlands. The rest of council agreed they would be openminded about potential benefits from remaining a partner with the Canadian Badlands. Council voted in favour of remaining a partner with Best opposed to the motion. Christmas support given Council made a motion to support the Strathmore and District Christmas Hamper Society in the form of a grant in the amount of $2,700. The funds will come from the financial stabilization reserve. Town proclamation Councillor Dave Hamilton made a motion to see October 2 proclaimed by the town of Strathmore as World Cerebral Palsy Day. Breast Cancer month Council received a request from the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation to proclaim the month of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Councillor Best made the successful motion.

Strathmore Vet donates to Calgary Zoo

Owners of Strathmore Vet Dr. Zulma Poveda and Dr. Miguel Moncayo along with staff started a fundraiser months ago to help rebuild some of the devastated habitats at the Calgary Zoo. Staff presented a cheque for $4,000 to Kathryne Drnasin (senior development officer) with the Calgary Zoo on Sept 19. The clinic decided that they would match any donations that came in and with a generous donation from Chestermere/Langdon Oilmens Association of $1,500 they were able to match the raised donations of $2,000. First priority for the zoo is to get all the animals back into their homes; they will then start repairing any concessions, and retail venders buildings. Finally they will repair the damaged office space. The employees are working out of trailers parked in the north part of the parking lot. The flood took out 95 per cent of the island and the Zoo is hoping they will have everything back up and running by Dec.1 in time for zoo lights. Currently the Northern exhibits are the only ones open to the public.

Meet the candidates

This week we asked those who have put their name in for a spot on council to tell us who they are and why they are running.

Town of Strathmore COUNCIL

Brad Walls
I was raised in the Strathmore area and am a very family oriented individual. My wife, Chantel, and I have a wonderful 6-year-old daughter, Emma, and a dynamic 19-month-old son, Kaiden. My volunteer efforts in the community have included: Strathmore Agricultural Society, Strathmore Lions, and the Community Crisis Shelter. I was elected Town Councillor in 2007 and was a Town Council appointed member on The Wheatland Family Community Support Services, Wheatland and District Emergency

Medical Services, United Way and The Strathmore Agricultural Society. As a strong, forward thinker, my approach to Council is to get things done for the people of Strathmore, to strive for a strong, balanced budget and to keep the cost of living down. We are one of the higher tax paying communities around Calgary. I would suggest that we review the budget and see if there are areas where we can save and pay down our debt load. We need to maintain and improve our current road infrastructure, continue to develop bike paths, investigate options for possible water savings, and provide incentives for industry and business to locate in Strathmore. As well, we need to continue to develop affordable housing for our families. I am eager to resume my responsibilities as councillor if am elected.

2013
John Whieldon
Living in Strathmore a majority of my life has given me numerous opportunities to volunteer and give back to our community. My family moved to Strathmore in 1976 in which I started my Grade 5 year. I went on to become a member of the class of 1984. I am happily married and a home owner. Throughout my many years in Strathmore I have volunteered extensively: as a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #10 (Strathmore), a former member of the Strathmore Kinsmen, coached a mixed slow pitch baseball team, assisted several local non profit organizations with fundraising, etc. I have been a member of two Town of Strathmore Committees: the Residential Irrigation Committee and the Names Committee. I am very fortunate in receiving the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay - Difference Maker Medal. For several years I have been licenced with the Alberta Solicitor General and Public Security Department. These credentials include Executive Protection, Loss Prevention Officer, Patrol Dog Handler, Security Alarm Responder and Security Officer. My wife Fina and I proudly call Strathmore our home. www.johnmwhieldon.com

Mark Giesbrecht
I decided to run for council this term for several reasons. First and foremost is my passion for my community. I am a lifelong resident of the Strathmore area and I wanted to give something back to the community that has blessed me with so much. If I am elected I want to focus on two primary themes; light industrial economic development and working with key partners to ensure no further cuts to our hospital. Elections are not just about issues but about people and trust. I believe that I am qualified

to earn your vote because of my familiarity with this community. I have ran a successful business (Wheatland Cellular Ltd.) in Strathmore since Sept. 2005. I am confident that many of the skills I have learned as a business executive will translate well to managing a growing town like Strathmore. I have political experience. I have served for the past two years as the executive vice president of the Strathmore Brooks riding association of the Wildrose Party of Alberta and worked as the volunteer co-ordinator on the Jason Hale campaign. I have been married to my wife Linda, a local girl from Standard, for 16 great years. We are committed to this community and want to see Strathmore grow in positive ways that will lift everyone up. This is my goal and I hope that I can earn your vote. Thank you and good luck to all the other candidates.

Doug Clarke
Hello, my name is Doug Clarke, and I am running for a seat on town council in the upcoming election. I feel that my experience in the municipal workplace, coupled with a commitment to building strong community, make me an excellent candidate. Residing in Strathmore for over five years has provided me opportunities to be active in the town. I have been involved with different committees such as Communities in Bloom and HEAL. I am a member of the organizing team for our local Tri

Denise Peterson
I have lived in Strathmore for nearly 30 years. I am married to Roger Nelson and together we have five children and seven grandchildren: Don & Susan Peterson (Peyton & Grady), Joe & Jodi Peterson (Zane & Cora), Barre & Jamie-Dee Adan (Madina, Yazmeen & Zahra), Sultan Reshid Nelson and Katlyn Nelson. Since 1984, I have worked for Golden Hills School Division as a teacher and principal, primarily at the Strathmore Storefront School. Currently I am enjoying working at the new

Siksika Outreach School. I am a third generation Albertan descended from western European homesteaders. I grew up on a farming/ranching operation in southeastern Alberta, and I embrace the pioneering spirit that built our Alberta communities. I believe that non-partisan municipal politics allows for the most meaningful dialogue between community members. I am seeking election because I have a strong desire to continue serving my community. I am committed to Advocacy for Seniors especially in the area of health services and affordable living. I am dedicated to managing our communitys growth in order to maximize opportunity for small business initiatives and to build sustainability for schools and recreation. Finally I would work to seek possibilities for collaboration among all levels of government in order to enhance services to our community.

Smore event and coach Brentwood Run Club as well as minor soccer. If you are in favour of the following ideas, I respectfully ask for your support; active healthy communities with access to many recreational opportunities for the entire family; thoughtful development that supports community wellness and attracts new families; a town council that is solution based and works with citizens, businesses and local groups; fiscally responsible governance that understands our customers needs; green initiatives supported and practiced by local government; a clear vision for the future of Strathmore and its residents. Over the next four weeks, I will be engaging the public as many ways as possible. For more information, follow me on Facebook and Twitter @ElectDougC where I look forward to sharing ideas with all voters.

Robert Antonisse
Hello, my name is Robert Antonisse and I am 33 years old. My family and I have lived in Strathmore for almost 10 years now and I have been blessed to work the last eight years in Town including the last five years I

have had the pleasure of working downtown so I have seen many of the challenges that the downtown core faces. Throughout my life I have worked in the service industry including restaurants and sales. I have developed a love for people and a passion for helping others. I enjoy solving problems and trying to come up with win-win solutions. It is because of this passion that I believe I would be an ideal candidate for Town Council. Thank you for your time and I look forward to seeing everyone in this exciting process to help shape our town!

Telisa Tebbutt
I have been a long-time resident of Strathmore and have attended school here from elementary forward. Being raised in a small town has allowed me to experience and get to know many different aspects of it. I have seen first-hand the good our community has to of-

fer, and am also aware of the issues we face, especially for the youth of our town. I feel I am an excellent candidate for council because I am a community oriented individual who can reach out to different corners that may have been neglected in the past. I will bring a different viewpoint to the table, with empathy and a fresh outlook that other candidates may not possess, while also complementing the skills they have to offer. I am a diversely interested and eager individual who is ready and willing to hear what the residents of Strathmore have to say; I look to represent you.

Allan Auger
My name is Allan Auger and I am running for a position on Town Council. My family used to vacation here in the 70s with my grandparents until moving here permanently in 1980. I have watched Strathmore grow from a population of around 1,500 to the size it is today

and although it has lost a little bit of that small town feeling, I feel it is still a great place to live and raise a family away from the big city atmosphere. I have worked in Strathmore most of my life with the last six years at Grays Ltd. Some of the things I would like to work on as Councillor would be building a greater commercial tax base as well as keeping our debt down so we can work on existing infrastructure as well as building new. I also think the town needs a center piece tourist attraction something along the #1 Highway and centered around our railway history. Thank you, Allan Auger.

Meet the candidates - Election 2013

Town of Strathmore MAYOR
Running for re-election why are you running again, what makes you want to come back, what is your campaign platform?

Michael Ell
Thank you to the Times for providing this opportunity to all candidates. I am pleased to submit some of my history and information to you. My wife and I have lived in Strathmore for 35 years. We are now retired. Now that I am retired, I have the time to commit to the demands of being the Mayor of Strathmore.

My background includes work in public service and in private and corporate business. I was a manager of a financial institution, I have worked in commercial and consumer credit, and I have worked in individual, corporate and real property taxes. My work experience has been rounded out with local volunteer work and as treasurer on the Board of Directors for Lunch Box Theatre. Many citizens have approached me in the past three or so months asking if I was going to run again, and they encouraged me to do so. My wife and I have benefited from living in the Town of Strathmore over these years and this is my opportunity to give back to our community.

Steve Grajczyk
I am excited to announce that I will be running for Mayor again because first off, I have the time, the passion and my heart and soul are in this community. I have resided here in Strathmore for 35 years and served as Mayor for the past three. I have been on many boards and committees such as: The Strathmore Ag Society for which I served as President and General Manager; I coached minor hockey and soccer, I have ran two businesses of which have since been sold, I was nominated Sportsman of the Year with the Kinsmen Club when I was an active member. I have served on many other boards and committees, too many to mention. I think serving and volunteering that much time to the various committees says that I am a true, honest person serving your community of Strathmore. I am proud to say that I helped raise my family here in this beautiful community. I have two

great children, Ryan and Karie, and three wonderful grandchildren. As Mayor my obligations are to work amongst council, administration and you, the citizens of Strathmore. My job is being a liason working with council, administration and governments at various levels as well as being an ambassador at representing your town. I want to run for Mayor for one more term (four years) to complete jobs already started. First off, making sure that there is something being done with the acute care wing that has been vacated at the hospital (putting in more emergency extended care facilities or more acute beds), working with storm water issues, potable water infrastructure issues, sewer treatment plant issues, maintaining and upgrading our streets and infrastructure, plus also dealing with the many issues of the individual public citizens. Another major focus of mine will be trying to get our recreational facilities upgraded (ball diamonds, soccer fields, hockey arena, pathways etc.) while still trying to maintain a low tax rate. The above is what I do as Mayor and love it and I hope to continue to get some of these issues resolved so I would be extremely happy and honored to continue to serve Strathmore in a positive and constructive manner.

Colin Smith
My name is Colin Smith. I was born in Newfoundland in 1959, and I settled in Alberta in 1985. I started my own business in 1988 in Strathmore, Alberta Colins Automotive. However, while working full-time as a mechanic, I felt that I wanted to be able to contribute more to my community; I joined the RCMP as an Auxiliary Constable where I volunteered my time for the next 11 years. In 1991 I bought a large acreage outside

Standard where I lived for the next 17 years, raising my two daughters and taking a hand at managing a farm, alongside running my shop, volunteering with the RCMP, and helping out local work experience students from the high school. When the physical demands of the shop became too much (I still try to help out friends and neighbours at my farm whenever I can), I went back to school, and obtained my realtors license in 2006 and began a fulltime real estate career in Strathmore and surrounding areas. I know and love this community, and I feel that my close ties within it, as well as my life and work experiences make me a great candidate for Councillor for Wheatland County. I want to be involved in change within my county and this is how I want do it.

Kevin Miller
I have decided to run in the election for county council Div #2. The councillor for this area has decided to step down so we will need a hard working and honest representative in council to be the voice of the people. I would like to be that voice. I would also like the county to prosper and to have people see it grow into a strong and viable community. There always has to be a balance between the people and the county. The only promise I can make is that I will work hard and be honest with and for the people. On a personal note I would like to see more businesses in the smaller towns. I think this would inspire growth in the county. So dont forget to vote; they all count and are well appreciated. Thank-you all and I am looking forward to talking to you.

Ian Mast
My name is Ian Mast and Im running for Division 2 councillor for Wheatland County. Since moving to Gleichen in 2006, my wife and I have been involved in various community groups and activities. During this time I have worked for both Wheatland County and the local arena in Gleichen so I feel confident talking about issues concerning both Gleichen and surrounding areas. I have decided to run for councilor because I believe it is time for a new voice to represent

Division 2, a voice that speaks for hamlet and rural interests. We have issues that need to be addressed, issues that will have a definite impact not only on Division 2, but for Wheatland County in general. Questions about community development and sustainability, school closures, water rights for hamlets and the way the County handles these matters are some of the points I want to raise during this election. I welcome the opportunity to speak with as many residents of Division 2 as possible during this election and leave an open invitation for all candidates to meet and talk about these issues and more. I can be contacted at 403-324-8667 / ianmast@telus.net. Thank you, Ian Mast.

Jacki Kirk
Who am I? I am a 56-year-old semi-retired, well educated, well informed and business minded individual who has lived in Gleichen for 29 years. My 18 year educational career as a classroom teacher, librarian, team leader, and technology coordinator along with my eight years as a small business owner and employer

have provided me experience teaching, learning, observing, problem-solving, budgeting, resource building, cooperating, communicating, leading, and organizing. Why am I running for council? I believe I have the qualifications, dedication, and public service mindedness to do an excellent job representing the residents of Division 2. If elected, I would work deligently towards ensuring that Wheatland County Council fulfils what I believe is its first and foremost duty: - to consider the residents of Wheatland County as the primary stakeholders, and secondly to ensure that our resources are used wisely and efficiently.

Also running but not available for comment as of press time are Russell Smith and Rex Harwood for Division 2.

We live in an amazing area. The community is diverse and has a brilliant future. Our list of strengths include agriculture, industry, small businesses and tourism. But I feel our biggest asset is the people. Growing up in the area, Ive had the privilege of living and working along side these remarkable people. Im so proud of their hard work, volunteerism and

Gauthier decided it was time to throw his hat into the ring as he had more time to dedicate to his community. A long time active member of the Standard Fire Department, Gauthier fully realizes the time and effort that needs to go back into the community in serving on Council. Gauthier has actively supported the Ag Society in the past by sitting on the Board of Directors as well as involved in the building and opening of the new Town of Standards fire department in the south part of town. Gauthier is passionate about his community and looks forward to bringing some new ideas to the table to make Standard the place to be.

Village of Standard
Bea and I have lived in the Standard area for 51 years. I have represented our council on a regional water committee for several years. I would like to see this completed. My experience from 51 years in the oil industry has given me lots of experience in a supervisory position with budget control and project management. I invite phone calls regarding any village members concerns.

Ron Corbiell
I have been on council for 11 years. My wife

Martin Gauthier
Martin Gauthier is not new to Standard. He has been married to his wife Glenda for 24 years with two boys, Justin and Travis, both grown and graduated from Standard School. While growing up, Gauthier was highly involved with his kids in the Minor Hockey Association. Now that they have graduated,

Adam Sommerfeldt

Standard is a wonderful community with so many hard working and devoted residents and organizations. I am glad to be a part of it. I look forward to serving as a village councillor to ensure Standard continues to be a safe and wonderful place to live with a secure and stable future in the changing dynamics and economics within Alberta.

Mark Clark
Mark Clark is seeking re-election for a second term on the Village of Standard council. He has been married to his wife Deah SchultzClark for 10 years and they have three won-

derful girls Serena, Marchella and Trinity. If re-elected he would like to see the current regional water program come to a successful completion. Being on council has a personal note to it for both him and his wife Deah. They want to give back to the community as they found the community gave them such tremendous support in earlier years due to illness in 2006 for both Clark and his wife; a small repayment of paying it forward but more importantly happy to be giving back to a community he respects and appreciates.

Alan Larsen
Alan Larsen grew up in and around the Standard area where his family farmed. Larsen is one of eight boys and two girls raised by his mom and dad (Esther and Kurt Larsen). Larsen is no stranger to volunteerism and community service as his history dictates his incredible involvement in every aspect of his community. Larsen has been on Village Council for six years to date serving a term as councillor, a term as Deputy Mayor and presently as Mayor.

He has enjoyed working with the present staff and fully realizes that it is a team effort. He has especially appreciated serving with present Deputy Mayor Don Cuthill (who has served 10 years on Village Council but is not seeking reelection), and thanks him for his guidance and dedication to municipal affairs. When asked why he is running again, he said, Im still having fun at it and I really enjoy meeting people in and around the community through different boards and services. Three items he wants to concentrate on are the regional water program, a fire review committee for the rural fire departments of the County of Wheatland, and finally growth and sales in the new sub division, making Standard attractive to new young families looking to raise their children in a friendly rural environment.

Joe Pedersen was not available as of press time.

Village of Rockyford
I have been on Rockyford Village Council for 12 years, and have really enjoyed the work and challenges of the job. I would like to remain to on council to see some of the things we are working on to completion. Expanding our sewage lagoon is something that has been done now and is almost completed. This will enable us to open a new subdivision, and encourage people build houses and move into town. We would love to pave all the streets in town, but the

Gerald Henry Katterhagen (Jerry)

cost would be way beyond what we could afford at this time. We are working on improving them, within our budget, and hope it helps conservatively. I know that people running for Council would say paving our roads is what they will do. It is a nice idea, but until we get a lot more industry paying taxes in our village, it is not going to happen. Rockyford is a wonderful place to live and raise children. I was born here and except for the twenty years I spent serving the Armed Forces, I have always called Rockyford my home. My wife and I have raised our three children here; my son, is in town and my other two with their families enjoy coming back to their hometown for visits, and of course for our famous Rockyford Rodeo. Thank you very much.

Leah Smith, Darcy Burke, Greg Baillie, Wane Beerling, Dalia Cheshire, Natalie Desantis and Jayne Koester were not available as of press time. Please note: the Hussar candidates were not available as of press time.

Municipal Development Plan moves forward

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Only five members of the public came out to the Municipal Development Plan (MDP) public hearing held in Wheatland Council chambers on Sept. 16. County planners, along with Dillon Consulting, amalgamated all the public open house information with details mentioned by ratepayers during the summer through the website and input by County council. Planners asked for councils approval for second reading of the proposal, moving forward to a final draft for third reading. We have spent a year on this project. It has been a very rewarding one. Good input has made it a better document, said Alex Taylor, Project manager for Dillon Consulting. We believe it contains strong policies that reflect what we heard from the ratepayers and council. The plan was restructured into three areas, which are Heritage, Growth and Services. It still includes agricultural concerns and attention to natural areas, water preservation/conservation, historical preservation and parks and recreation development, as well as tourism enhancements. It recommends managing growth and preserving agricultural land. Commercial and industrial development areas are to be clustered in designated areas, and subdivisions of six lots or greater on one quarter section will be encouraged to consolidate their servicing, and be located to the most appropriate areas. The full MDP draft can be seen on the Wheatland County website. The idea of transfer credits was taken out, until the province implements a mechanism for its use. Confined feeding operations were removed, as they dont fall under county jurisdiction. The terms sensitive and significant under the Environmental Assessment section were clarified, opening up a less restrictive interpretation. Vegetative restoration along defined water bodies was modified, as it falls under provincial mandate, and the county would participate in current watershed management groups rather than initiate practises on its own. Storm water management will be applicable to all development proposals; regional storm water and waste water references that were controlled by provincial mandate were removed. Servicing requirements were clarified for water well and septic use, with direction to connect to municipal lines where possible. Natural resource clustering was changed to locate development where the resources were located, but discourage development of things like gravel pits on prime agriculture land, near hamlets or water bodies. Mobility and transportation guidelines would also consider non-resident visitors. There was a request at the hearing to include Hutterite colonies in the MDP and define development for their colonies, as they often have 100 people or more living in one area. It was asked that they be subject to county bylaws. Planners indicated that Hutterites were no different than other farmers and were currently assessed and given development permits the same as everyone else. The number of houses was not the issue; rather consolidation of the water and sewer services to a centralized system was the concern. Planners said any concerns that fall under Land Use Bylaws could be part of relevant discussions there. Any special conditions granted were under sections with discretionary guidelines. Councillors questioned whether Hutterite colonies could be included under agricultural section due to their unique communal structure and culture. It was questioned if the colonies fell under residential, agriculture, commercial or industrial designation, or all of the above. There was a suggestion that there needed to be more information included under oil and gas development using industry development appropriate guidelines, so that Council could arrive at a balanced decision. It was a long process with a lot of reviews, said Steve Marshman, who was involved in oil industry guideline discussions. I was blown away that it doesnt present more information for you to review. Council indicated they didnt have much say in oil and gas development in the county, as surface rights and resource development was under the ERCB and the provinces direction. Clarification on the use of bio-retention swales was asked for, as it was a fairly new technology. There was also a request to include solar and wind technology in the guidelines, including the possibility of new technology appropriate to use in hamlets. Dean Kipley felt Council should give more forward thought to off-the-grid enterprises. A local developer asked for terminology clarification under development and agricultural use guidelines. Clarification was also wanted on whether existing ASPs would be grandfathered. County ratepayers have in good faith, done everything to standards and it would be disappointing to find out they spent all that money and they were not approved, said Dan Thiessen, who is currently working on development processes for his property. There was also a request to include an adjacent landowner notification policy, which was currently listed as discretionary. Planners were encouraging council to approve the second and third reading, so the document could be in place prior to the election in October. Members of the audience were adverse to the idea and wanted the document to be available to residents, considering the amount of changes made. Some members of Council were also against rushing the document through. I take exception to rush a major document such as this through Council prior to the election. We want a good document and a final document, said Councillor Brenda Knight. Reeve Glenn Koester said the information given at the public hearing was for councils consideration and that the public had been notified and should have been present if they had concerns. Second reading was approved with Councillor Alice Booth and Councillor Brenda Knight in opposition.

Playground officially open

After a year and a half of planning, fundraising and construction Westmount school held a grand opening for their new playground on Sept. 24. During the ceremony students thanked the many volunteers for their efforts in making the playground a reality. The festivities ended with a ribbon cutting by Principal Wayne Funk and then a cookie for each student. Parent volunteers and local businesses put in countless hours to build the playground and to fundraise thousands of dollars to pay for the equipment.

Thought for the Week ~

Three years or four

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Alberta changed its municipal government terms from three years to four on December 5, 2012, amending the Local Authorities Election Act. Input from serving municipal officials supported the move. The Alberta Urban Municipalities Association and Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties have called for increased governing terms of four years, said Cam Traynor, spokesperson for the Alberta Municipal Government in discussions on electoral changes. The move to a four year term has been discussed in municipalities across all provinces in Canada. Prior to the implementation of changes to the Electoral Act for Alberta, Municipal Affairs Minister Doug Griffiths commented in the news that an extended year would bring cost savings to the election process, by decreasing the amount of elections held over the long term. He said that the three year term didnt give new councillors time to master the learning curve, and many municipal councillors agreed with him, indicating four years allows sitting councils a longer period to get business done. Dissenters point out that the number of years has no bearing on productivity. A paper by J. Stephen Ferris of Carleton University, done in 2013, shows the number of bills passed by the federal government sitting for four year terms actually decreased over time, so the extra year had no net benefit. In 2008, Allan Drazen and Marcela Eslava produced a paper that indicated votes can be manipulated through voter-friendly spending. A longer term may allow the ruling political candidate additional time to sway voter attitudes. Most global analysts indicate the practise works better with a

LifeStyles
poor population. Social engineering, however, is a common practise employed in developed countries, by delivering social programs to voters in the year leading up to an election. Social media, advanced polling and media coverage also impact voter decisions to some extent. The longer term will decrease the number of times those perks are delivered to the public. There have been cases in the political arena in which the social engineering backfires, biting politicians with a negative impact. If those in power are just plain bad at governance and alienate people by not recognising the current issues and opinions, voters are not swayed and often surprise the pollsters. Another drawback to four year terms, according to voter advocacy groups, is it delays voters ability to change governing officials. Social media postings to a CBC article about municipal election term change showed readers were split for and against the longer term. The City of Calgary website indicated a longer term would allow businesses and residents more pre-planning stability reflected in four years of planned tax revenues. Whether acquiring an extra electoral year would definitely cause those taxes to remain fixed was not qualified. If the trend of yearly salary increases for elected officials is maintained and the cost of services continues to rise incrementally, voters already know that nothing is sure except death and increased taxation, and an extra year only prolongs the prognosis. For the anarchist or apathetic voter, not voting is the option of choice. It is interesting that until 2012, over 50 per cent of eligible voters in Alberta didnt vote, so for that portion of the populace, whether the term is three or four years really doesnt matter to them.

Sight without vision is worse than blindness.

Dry weather generates Fire Ban

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Wheatland council imposed a fire ban on Sept. 16, in hopes fire risks would be lessened within the county. This is the highest risk time right now, with the winds and the heat, said Councillor Ken Sauve. While dry weather is great for harvesting crops, fires are generated by machinery harvesting over dry cropland. Standard Fire Chief Phil Phaubion said the fires cant often be helped, but they can be contained with wise risk management practises. I want to give a big bouquet, thanking farmers that have a water truck and tandem disc on hand to deal with fires when they start. It really helps, said Phaubion. He said applying water and tilling fire breaks catches the fires immediately, so it doesnt get established and require an extensive intensive fire response. With these careful practises the fires are often out before the fire trucks arrive. Phaubion said his crews have recently assisted on two fire calls, one in Hussar and one in Rockyford. One was combine generated. There were also recent fires in Arrowood and the Strathmore area. Mark Heilman, Fire Chief for the Strathmore Rural Fire District, said the majority of recent fires in his area had been harvest related. One farmer was spreading manure on his field and straw made it into hot areas of the truck where it ignited. Luckily he planned ahead and had a cultivator on site. Having water and a cultivator close at hand cuts losses down quite a bit, said Heilman. Both Heilman and Phaubion agree the fire ban should be enforced, considering the recent hot weather. Phaubion said the intermittent rainfalls dont do much to stop the fire risks. Councillor Ben Armstrong said the ban could not apply to crop harvests, but it may decrease the fire incidents set by errant individuals. Councillor Alice Booth said that the Fire Ban is used to stop

indiscriminate burning practises. Some examples are burning in fire barrels, trash and leaf piles and the practise of controlled stubble burns. See www. wheatlandcounty.ca for a full list of banned activity. Anyone who starts a slough on fire right now is out of their mind, said Councillor Ben Armstrong. The topic of fireworks was brought up. The use of fireworks is currently under Alberta government review. Protective Services Manager Gerald Skibinsky said that they are not currently issuing permits for personal fireworks. Chief Administrative Officer Allan Parkin said that people without a permit are taking a big risk to light fireworks, because if a fire starts from their use, the individual will have to pay all costs associated with fighting the fire. Council felt they had to invoke the ban in order to protect the countys liability and uphold their responsibility to the ratepayers. The action ran contrary to established procedures, which involves fire guardians and fire chiefs to set the ban, but it is within the Councils right under accepted provincial guidelines. There was a suggestion that degrees of fire risk be indicated on advertisement boards throughout the county. Council recommended the guidelines for fire bans will be re-evaluated, after the Fire Review results are in place. Five councillors approved setting the ban, one was opposed. Fire departments in the county always need support from the public to carry on their work. They are manned by volunteer crews and dont receive funding like the large municipal services. They support residents by responding to emergency situations and fires, like the recent harvest flare-ups and are looking for residents to support their local fire departments in return. The Strathmore Rural Firefighters have a fundraising Ladies night planned for Oct.5. It is an annual event that is always a fun and interesting night out. Tickets are still available at ProWater in the Town of Strathmore. Watch for other fundraisers throughout the year, for the various halls within the County.

Wheatland County responds to emergencies

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor The Emergency Response Plan developed by Gerald Skibinsky, Protective Services manager has received positive response in the community. The villages went over the process and were impressed with what the county has here. They were considering taking it back and implementing it in their own areas, said Skibinsky. He was hoping to have an Emergency Response mock event set sometime during the winter months. He reminded council about a meeting set for Oct 9 in the afternoon, where WADEMSA issues will be discussed. The fire service review is right on track with technical proofing set to conclude by Sept. 30. Skibinsky said they expect the first draft will be done by Oct. 3 and a presentation of the report may be as early as Oct. 15. The August Protective Services stats showed 119 violations with 90 traffic offences and one overweight ticket. They continue to assist the RCMP with seven calls, one EMS assist and four assists to other county departments. There were eight animal control calls, two environmental investigations and four general reporting matters. Officers have increased their hours of service to coverage earlier and later in the day. We have had positive feedback from the ratepayers. We have had several phone calls thanking us for being out there, said Officer Kevin Taylor. Off road bylaw Council approved the Off Road Vehicle bylaw through second and third readings. The bylaw included the changes requested by council from the public hearing, which included no helmet requirement, no speed limit, farm vehicle use exemptions, hours of operation changes and exemptions for highway vehicles with specific requirements approved by the county Chief Administrative Officer. So off road vehicles can be used in a hamlet, if the owner and operator have a working access agreement with the County? asked Councillor Don Vander Velde, to address concerns put forward by hamlet residents in the past. County Peace Officers confirmed they could, if they have the working access agreement and they abide by the other terms designated in the bylaw.

Pranava Yoga Studio now offers babysitting

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter When youre a stay at home mom, or dad, it can be tough to find a chance to take a little break for yourself. You dont necessarily want to call in a babysitter for an hour or two, but sometimes you just need to take some time for yourself to breathe and relax. Pranava Yoga Studio is offering parents a chance to do just that. The Karma Program is a two-part program. One of those parts is the babysitting program. Were still looking for folks that would like to trade time for yoga. We have a few positions left still. The Karma Program, the babysitting program, is filled by volunteers, they have had their RCMP and Child Welfare checks done so you can feel confident in that, said Becky Stone, co-owner of Pranava Yoga Studio. A lot of them are our moms that are looking to find ways to supplement their income and take yoga. While mom or dad is in yoga, the kids head downstairs with their babysitter. Only five kids are accepted at a time, and it is by reservation. Drop-ins are welcome as long as there is room for the kids. An extra bonus to the program is theres no cost. The babysitting is free or by donation. This months donation is going to Strathmores Make a Wish Autism Chapter, so we have that option if they would like to, but otherwise its free, said Stone. There is not really an age limit or minimum, though the room is geared more for kids 0 to fiveyears-old. In addition to the babysitting shifts, there are also evening and weekend shifts available through the Karma Program. We ask for a certain amounts of hours in trade for unlimited yoga. The evening shifts are not babysitting shifts, they are desk shifts, said Stone. We certainly dont ever want to be turning people away. If they want to do yoga and they cant afford to do yoga we have an option. When she first opened the studio Stone had hoped to have something that would make yoga an option for moms that are at home with kids. When this program started to form and there was so much interest and now that its running theres a lot of excitement about it. Were just ridiculously pleased right now, just really, really pleased to be able to make activities accessible for mom time during the day in a a place that kids are happy and safe, said Stone. She recommends checking the website, www. pranavayoga.ca first because the program is volunteer based and not every class will have the babysitting option. The babysitting dates that are available can be found under childcare services.

Making this tiMe count Fall is always such a wild time, it seems. trying to get kids back to school, return from holidays, get the harvest in, deal with the things that are going on, day to day, plan for the season ahead, will it be hockey or music lessons? however with all that is going on, it is a time of hope for us, because it is the time that urges us to look ahead with hope and figure out what our planned and desired future, at least for the next few months, can look like. For many, myself included, it can be an almost overwhelming time, as i wonder, am i up to all that lies ahead? how will i actually see all of this happen, and get it done, and meet my obligations and responsibilities? and i know i am not alone. in the book of ecclesiastes the 3 chapter, king solomon, in his wisdom, penned a poem that has been shared, made into numerous songs, and contains a huge piece of wisdom for us as fall rolls around. Perhaps you recognize some of these phrases and werent even sure where they came from. he penned For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven; and then he goes on to list many times. in stopping and reflecting on his wise words, i recognize that if we took them to heart, the frantic season of fall could become a gentler season of making what we do meaningful, we could make it count so much more. We dont have to do everything, all the time, or even at one time. We have seasons ahead! and when we overload ourselves, and our schedules, what we do is not nearly as enjoyable, fulfilling or productive as it could be. king solomon was a very wise man, in his writings, he encouraged such wise living, taking time to make the best of what opportunities and experiences were before a person. and he said when people lived with other priorities or expectations, they might experience folly. so rather, he encouraged people to live wisely, to consider carefully how to live out their lives in order to experience the best. throughout the book, he includes other pieces of wisdom ... frequently he encourages people to have faith, trust god, and strive to follow our creators directions and plans. i cant help but think that if we went back to the original god given codes of compassion and justice and concern for others, our world would be a gentler, more nurturing place. so to all, i encourage us, lets take note of king solomons words of wisdom, and try to balance our fall season a little more gently, so that what we do, is a blessing to us, a blessing to others, and gives us time to grow and share in our creators wisdom. May god bless us all as we enter into this new season of living ... aMen. Pastor Dawn Lord of All Lutheran Church

Campaigning comes at a cost

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter The costs of running an effective campaign vary, depending on the candidate and the role they are campaigning for. For Mayor Steve Grajczyk in the 2010 election, his costs ran high, reaching approximately the $8,000 mark. I bought a lot of signage, paper advertising and just general expenses, just small stuff, but mainly signage, said Grajczyk. I probably overspent, but it got my name across. In contrast, Councillor Bob Sobol spent only $600 for his last campaign. This year I am going to be spending a little bit more just because I have been hassled so much about the size of my small signs. I have had the

Town approves grader attachment

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter No one likes to think about snow when summer has just ended, but unfortunately to be ready it must be considered. Jesse Parker, director of operations and engineering for the Town of Strathmore, brought a request to council at the Sept. 18 council meeting for a snow gate grader attachment. The town currently has two graders, a medium duty one and one that is used for light duty. The medium duty grader is a John Deere 770 grader and is largely used for windrowing snow ahead of the snow blower in the winter months. It is also used to help with snow clearing on the roadways as needed. One of the challenges weve encountered with windrowing is managing the windrow during the winter months, said Parker. A windrow is a pile of snow that accumulates during plowing. Some of the windrows are being carried through intersections and along driveways and access points, which can be an issue with snow removal and access onto roadways. A snow gate will help solve some of those problems. A snow gate is a hydraulic attachment for the grader blade that interrupts the windrow while grading. If the blade is tilted and youre clearing snow the snow falls off the end in typical operations, said Parker, but with a snow gate at the trailing end of your blade you have the ability to lower this, and it acts almost as a box blade and traps the snow. You can drop the snow gate and control the windrow so that it doesnt spill into a driveway or an intersection and you can drop it on the other side. It does help with managing that and keeping intersections open without a second piece of equipment or the grader operator reversing and coming back to clear the windrow from the roadway, said Parker. The gate will allow them to specify where the windrow will be and allow the grader operator to strategically place the snow until removal. Parker said the town has made a step towards using more plow trucks; there are two plows and two sanders. The grader doesnt plow all of the roadways, and so there will still be windrow issues in some areas of town. In terms of the expectation that residents wont see a windrow at the end of their driveways, there will still be a windrow on most driveways but in problem areas well be able to use this piece of equipment to help as needed where we can assist the public, said Parker. Council approved the motion to create a 2013 Capital Project for a snow gate grader attachment. The cost of $9,400 for purchase and installation will come out of the Financial Stabilization Reserve.

smallest signs in the last two campaigns, said Sobol. He said this year he expects it will cost him about $1,000, which is his budget for the campaign. He plans to go doorto-door and visit with residents, and will be attending as many forums as he can. Im a real believer that your past dictates what your future is going to be. My campaign started three years ago, I dont work every day with the idea of getting re-elected or anything but, when I do get elected I consider it a privilege and so the work that I do during that three years is a thank you to the people for electing me, said Sobol. I am responsible for that honour and I take it very seriously. I honestly believe thats the best way to campaign for an election is to really bust your butt, get up there, do the work and give the job 100 per cent. I honestly believe that a lot of people notice that, see that and appreciate that. Grajczyk shares Sobols sentiments that mayor and council are always campaigning. Youre campaigning all the time. The moment you get elected youre campaigning. I am here for the betterment of the community. I have no personal vendettas, no personal objectives other than making the town a better place to live for all of the community, said Grajczyk. The official nominees have been named and the race for a spot on council is well underway. Election day is Oct. 21 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. for Strathmore residents.

Staff and students at Holy Cross Collegiate will be celebrating the schools 10th anniversary this school year.

Steve Grajczyk
for
People Focused Conscientious Passion For The Community Knowledge in All Issues, such as Health Care, Development and Recreation

Celebrating 10 years
Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Years ago a Catholic school in Strathmore was a dream that a group of residents had. Through hard work and perseverance, many dedicated individuals helped the dream become a reality. Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC) first opened its doors to students in 2004, and later this school year HCC will be celebrating its 10th anniversary. Three staff members have been with the school since the beginning: Principal Lavern Evans, Educational Assistant Shirley Benoiut and administrator Mary Kruse. I just remember that first year having 123 kids and you could fill one set of the bleachers and talk to the entire student body, from 7-10, said Evans of that first year. Its interesting looking back, this year we might have 365 kids in the building, and to just think of the growth and how full our building is and the growth of staff and we really have a true high school now 10 to 12 and a junior high 7 to 9. I think the one thing that for me that sort of sticks out is for the first six or seven years I could walk down the hall and I knew every single student, said Benoiut. Now its getting to the point where I, unfortunately, can walk down and not know some students and I dont really like that feeling. I guess I try and challenge myself to get to know the students that I wouldnt normally see every day, said Benoiut. She said she makes an effort to try to be personalble and get to know the students on a first name basis. In the first school year there werent enough students to field a sports team, and at the first graduation in 2007 there were only seven graduates. Kruse said over the years she has noticed the increase in all the small things the students and staff members

do as a school. Because I take the pictures for yearbook, I really notice over a year stuff that you would never expect we would have enough (students) to do, like sports teams, we had so many sports teams last year. We did the first musical ever a couple years ago and it was like really, were going to have enough kids to have a musical? said Kruse. Were still a small school compared to other (schools) but we do a lot of stuff. The school offers a lot of programs, all because the teachers are also putting in extra time to help the school grow and enhance programs each year. The growth of the programs, even academic, fine arts and sports, I think you need those three things to have a really good school. You can have amazing academics and fine arts but then you need sports, I call them the holy trinity of an amazing school, said Evans. He said even looking back five or six years ago and seeing where things were to where they are now makes him proud to think of the growth and the work that the staff put into making things come together. The staff has changed over the years, but its always a fun staff. Theyre fun, they want to do stuff with the kids, said Kruse. She said that the staff always interacts well with the kids, which she feels relates to the kids and makes them feel more comfortable about approaching a staff member with a concern or issue. I think my job could be even more challenging if you had staff that maybe you disagreed with or werent the best to be the classroom, but we have good staff so it makes everybodys job easier. As an adult and obviously from a learning standpoint, the kids are so blessed to have the staff we do, thats what makes my job so good, said Evans. Continued on Page 17

Seeing them graduate makes it hit home and makes you realize that you had a part in that. Most of HCCs staff live in town and see a lot of the kids outside of school. The kids always come up and say hi, or even after graduation they come to the school to say hi. Evans said they love to hear what the kids are doing and he thinks it speaks to the climate and nature of the school because it seems to hit home. It is also nice to catch up and see what they are doing. They know college or university isnt for everyone. At the end of the day you hope youre installing faith and then you want someone who is a contributing, productive member of society, said Evans. All three of them have no plans of leaving the school anytime soon. They all love working there and their roles with HCC. Evans met his wife through the division. She works at Sacred Heart Academy. We love living in Strathmore and we both have good jobs, our kids are happy here, we love the school. I love being an administrator, she really likes her job at Sacred Heart so really we have no reason to leave, said Evans. Kruse moved to Strathmore a year before she found the job at HCC. She had always worked in different administrative jobs and had never worked in a school before but thought it would be something interesting and different. She said it was really nice to be able to work in the same building as her kids and be able to be closer to them and kind of share in the school experience with them. Its a really neat feeling to know that Im in the office praying while my kids are in the classroom praying and its just a nice connection to know that were all together that way, said Kruse. Instilling good faith and helping mould productive members of society is what the three staff members hope to continue with. From my standpoint as a principal you always want to be improving. I dont think you ever want to get comfortable and stagnant (in what you do) when you have been teaching 10 or 20 or even two years, you always want to do better and from a principals standpoint, said Evans. I want the school to continue to improve and I want our fine art and academics and athletics to continue to evolve. I always want to be trying different things as a staff to grow as professionals and then to enhance and improve student learning. He said the number one goal is how are they, as staff, living and modeling their faith. For Benoiut her focus for the future is faith. How can they get the students to realize the importance of their faith and having it in good times and in bad times. This years graduating class is expected to be approximately 60 students. This will also be the first year where students who started at Sacred Heart Academy in Kindergarten will graduate. Staff at HCC are still working on how exactly they plan to celebrate their 10 year achievement.

Stepping down after a decade of service

Manny Everett Times Contributor Don Cuthill, Deputy Mayor of the Village of Standard, is stepping down and not seeking re-election after a decade of dedicated service to the community. Cuthill first went on council in 2003 and replaced Murray Sanderson, completing the second half of a term. Cuthill has been involved in many aspects of municipal affairs. He was the Village representative for WADEMSA (ambulance service) for seven years, currently the representative on the Community Futures Board; Mayor from 2008-2011 but currently fills the position of Deputy Mayor. When asked why he wasnt seeking re-election, he simply stated that it was time to step down and allow new people with new ideas onto council. He was excited to be a part of the building of the new water plant and the new subdivision for the future expansion of the community. He enjoyed the ground work with engineers and the development of a 10-year plan for the improvement of the water and sewer lines, as well as the improvement of the roads. He is proud and honoured to have been part of the community and community groups that have been instrumental in building Standards new hall, fire hall and the implementation of the beautification of the Village. Most importantly, Cuthill has enjoyed his 10 years on council and has especially enjoyed working with the past and present councilors, who have all worked together for the good of the Village of Standard. Best wishes for the future and good luck in the upcoming elections for the new council.

Library Day plans underway

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter The first annual Strathmore Municipal Library Day is coming up on Oct. 5. Staff at the library are excited for everything they have planned for the day which will be run as an open house style event. There will be several events happening simultaneously at the library and everyone is encouraged to come take part in the day. There will be a special story time filled with crafts and games to play. There will also be a crafty creation station for the kids. It will be a fun area where there will be a bunch of craft supplies and the kids can feel free to make whatever they like. Were going to have a photo booth as well, you know the typical photo booth like you see at weddings where you dress up. You will be able to get your picture taken and we will email you a copy of your picture for free, said Carmen Erison, assistant director of library services. Were also going to have a special guest, were going to have Clifford the Big Red Dog coming which is very exciting. The great thing about having Clifford the Big Red Dog is everybody loves Clifford. Most people young and old know Clifford the Big Red Dog and were going to have him for our special story time and then hell be available to take pictures with in the photo booth. There will be displays on the librarys past, present and future, and a draw for a Kobo Mini e-reader. For the adults there is going to be a gadget lab available. If youre looking to buy an e-reader or a tablet and youre not sure if youre going to like reading on one we encourage you to come out to our gadget lab because this way you get to try it out, see if you like it and then you can go purchase, said Erison. Council members, MLA Jason Hale and MP Kevin Sorenson were invited to attend but to date there havent been any confirmations on who will be attending the event. There will be cake and other refreshments available, and a giant snakes and ladders game. Come out to the library see what were all about, learn about our services and programs and have a little bit of fun too, said Erison. The events begin at 1:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Oct. 5.

Zombies to take over Carseland

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Zombies will take to the streets of Carseland on Oct. 5 for the second annual Zombies Walk. Last year the event was held a little later in the year, on Oct. 22, but because the weather was so cold organizers Jennifer Wiebe and Amanda Boda decided to host it a little earlier this year. Wiebe said the kids were bundled up and dressed like zombies but they didnt break character. The idea is not to break character. So you have to literally act like a zombie, said Wiebe. Boda and Wiebe brought the Zombies Walk to Carseland. It was tough to try and figure out a way to get into the city with all of the kids. Also the winter travelling was not something anyone ever looks forward to. Besides, said Wiebe, everyone should have one in their own community. Wiebe said the kids got on board right away, but the adults were a little warier. People brought their pets dressed up as zombies, and once the community started to realize what was happening they seemed to enjoy the walk. Wiebe said they didnt do a best dressed contest because they wanted it to remain something where the kids are just having fun, not turn competitive or turn into something that becomes about money. The Zombies Walk is open to everyone, whether you are from Carseland or not. The more zombiess the merrier. Not sure how to be zombielike? Check out Carselands Facebook page Walk the Zombie and there is a link to a Zombie 101 PDF. I really would love to see a Lady Gaga zombie because I mean she is such a freak right, and she has so many wicked and wild outfits, you could pick any outfit and then just turn it into zombie style. I couldnt imagine how cool and neat it would look like, said Wiebe. The Carseland Zombies Walk is on Oct. 5, its free and the only requirement is you must dress like a zombie and stay in character for the whole walk. The walk is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. though everyone participating is asked to meet at the Community Centre for 1:30 p.m.

Best steps down from council

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter At the Sept. 18 town council meeting Councillor Earl Best made an announcement that he will not be seeking re-election. It is with a heavy heart and a great deal of sadness and reflection that I sit facing council tonight. Earlier this evening I notified Mayor Grajczyk that I do not intend to seek re-election to the Town of Strathmores town council, said Best. For the past nine years it has been my privilege and honour to sit as a councillor and I have been extremely fortunate to represent and serve the fine citizens of this great town. Best said he is sad and regretful to step down but he can walk away with his head held high knowing that he was true and honest in all his dealings with and for the town of Strathmore. In his nine years as a councillor, Best has served with three mayors and 12 councillors. He has a special place in his heart for the town staff and administration who always work their hardest for the town. Best also gave thanks to Colleen, his wife, who has always given him love and support in everything he does. Nine years is a long time and from the first time that I ran just about everything has been accomplished and I can walk away now happy about that, said Best. During the course of his three terms Best has seen projects near and dear to him completed, one of which is the donation of the wetlands to the town. That was my baby, it was something I pushed for and I fought for and I sat in their board room one day when they gave it to us, I wanted to run down the table and kiss the guy, said Best laughing. Other completed projects he is particularly proud of are the swimming pool completion, the pipeline from Calgary, annexation, the effluent line to the Bow River and talks with the province about the proper realignment of Highway 1. He is also proud of successfully being part of pushing to get a smoking bylaw put through in town. Best said when he couldnt do it from municipal council, he was involved in pushing AUMA to lobby the government, and two months later Bill 201 was a reality. I have been very fortunate I have been able to deal with the seniors for the past nine years. I have been the town representative to the Happy Gang, its a great joy, said Best. I think the thing I feel very proud of is for nine years I have been very approachable and prepared

to listen and I think that if someone is going to run for council they have to know that that is something that they have to have. Best said the main reason he is not running for re-election is because it is time, and perhaps there can be new blood on council that have different thoughts and can help the town go in a different direction. He intends to join a couple of boards and would like to wean himself off of being involved in a public way rather than quit it all cold turkey. Best also plans to trace his family roots, something he thinks is very important. I wish all those who run for council and mayor the best of luck and I thank you for everything, said Best.

Oktoberfest for playground

Laureen F. Guenther Times Contributor Langdons children have been without a playground in their towns main park since its play equipment was declared unsafe and torn down in the summer of 2012. Chrissy Craig and her team members in the Langdon Community Association (LCA) have been fundraising for new play equipment ever since. Theyve raised $40,000 and need to raise $60,000 more. United and Gleichen Choir provided musical selections, as did the United Church Chimes Choir. Flowers were provided by the Eeles Family, the Radway Family, the Stanley Family and Hope Community Covenant Church. Lynn Fair and her assistants created a display in The Narthex, which showed photos, programs, letters and the history of the church. Following the service, 214 people (by ticket only) sat down to a roast beef supper, prepared and served by LaRue, Kathy and their helpers. Many appreciative comments have been made regarding this wonderful day.

Anglican Church welcomes new pastor

Angela Arinze St. Michael and All Angels Anglican Church After a clergy vacancy lasting more than a year, the parish of St. Michael and All Angels is pleased to announce the appointment of Rev. Bryan Beveridge as Incumbent. Pastor Bryan comes to Strathmore having served in eight previous ministry settings, both congregational and institutional. He reports that, in terms of parish ministry, he particularly enjoys preaching and teaching and celebrating communion. He has also enjoyed a long ministry association with many fire departments, a role he has pursued both out of respect for the work that firefighters do, and out of appreciation for the role of fire departments in raising funds for muscular dystrophy, a disease that affects two of his sons. When asked how he views the challenges ahead, Bryan replied that he sees his role as one of leadership, both spiritual and temporal. In spiritual terms, that means guiding the

congregation in discerning what they have been called and gifted to do. In temporal terms, it means heading the process of discerning where the congregation will be physically located in the years to come. The people of St. Michaels voted a year ago to leave behind a century old church building that was no longer meeting its needs. The challenge now is to discern where the churchs spiritual calling intersects with the bricks and mortar aspect of ministry. The parish will hold a service of Induction to celebrate the beginning of Rev. Bryans ministry here. Everyone is welcome to attend the service held Sunday, Sept. 29 at 4 p.m. in our interim worship location, 245 Brent Boulevard. Rev. Bryan extended a warm invitation to anyone interested in Questioning Everything to our Alpha Course, which began on Sept. 24. He also welcomes everyone to our Sunday worship at 10 a.m. weekly. Please call our church office for further information on any of our activities.

Evening of entertainment and desserts

Manny Everett Times Contributor Even though the new Standard Community Hall is built and dedicated with their grand opening in the spring of 2013, they still are doing their last bit of fundraising to complete the project. We have come such a long way with raising funds for the hall. Our whole community can be very proud at what we have accomplished. We have paid the loan down to just under $200,000. The fundraising committee continues to work diligently towards paying off the debt as soon as possible and hope that everyone will continue to support the fundraising projects, said the Hall Board Committee. Now that most farms are finished harvest or are near completion its time to celebrate once again. Friday, Oct. 4 the Hall Board will be bringing in The Rosebud River Valley Boys to entertain through story and song in concert. During the evening they will be holding an artisan raffle of three beautiful items that have been generously donated by the artists: a hand carved prairie falcon by Ron Bartholow, a hand blown glass bowl by Mark Gibeau and a quilt by Joyce Hussin. Also during the evening the Husky Heritage Display will be unveiled to the public. Any inquiries or to pre-purchase tickets for the event, can be made at Gates Agencies at (403) 644-3757.

New preschool in Carseland opens doors

Busy Bee Preschool For months a volunteer board and local teacher, Lynnette Wiebe, have been working to establish a much needed Carseland Preschool. Busy Bee Preschool had its first day of classes on Sept. 17 and it was a great success! Students arrived with new backpacks, shiny shoes and anticipation! The students enjoyed a tour of the school and especially enjoyed the stop at the gym for some physical activities. The first art project was to make painted hand prints which will be part of a keepsake book that will be handed out at the end of the school year to each child. By the end of each class there was at least one student who made the comment Im tired. What a great compliment! September will also include, weather permitting, a neighborhood walk to a local garden to help dig up potatoes. This is a great opportunity for students to learn about gardening and where our food comes from. Carseland has been without a preschool for several years. Parents needed to choose between driving their child to Strathmore or elsewhere for preschool, or their child simply not attending. The trend seemed to be that if parents started their children in preschool in another location their child would continue to attend school in that location instead of attending the local Carseland School. It is the hope that with the Busy Bee Preschool option in Carseland, parents will choose to keep their children in Carseland for preschool, kindergarten and their elementary education. Busy Bee Preschool is located in a classroom in the Carseland School. Over the previous months the bookshelves and cupboards have been sanded, primed and painted to suit a preschool class. The walls are decorated and will soon be adorned with preschool artwork. A super huge thank you goes out to the Carseland School, the Carseland Lions, the Carseland Public Benefit Club, the Carseland Kids Coalition, Strathmore Family and Community Support Services and to numerous individuals who have donated money, supplies and time to see Busy Bee Preschool happen! Classes run Tuesday and Thursday mornings and afternoons. The monthly fee is only $80 for two classes per week. Registrations will continue to be accepted until all spaces are full. Contact Busy Bee Preschool by emailing them at busybeecarseland@gmail. com or get registration information at their website (busybeecarseland. blogspot.ca).

Sweeper is a lovely and quiet cat looking for a calm home to call hers forever. She was surrendered to happy cat when her owner moved into a long-term care facility that did not allow pets. She is a beautiful cat, who loves to cuddle and keep you company. She adores being brushed and will roll over for tummy rubs :) Sweeper would be best adopted into a quieter home because she is a little on the shy side when theres a lot of activity going on. Great with other cats.

Its been one year since the Standard Neighbourhood Grill and Bar was opened by new owner operator Peter Pan and his friend Yvonne Ouellet. Picking up and moving across the country from Quebec with his daughters Diana and Angelina, who both attend Standard school, has been an adjustment and an adventure to say the least. Pan made significant changes to the hotel and bar establishment through his Asian fusion food and through renovations to the business itself. The bar now boasts patio dining and a family-friendly space for patrons to bring children into the restaurant without having them interact with the bar. On Saturday, September 28, Pan will be bringing in live entertainment for the anniversary event. A Girl Named Jake, Jacqueline Marcelle, a local music artist

How can you have fun and learn in the best way possible? Rockyford School Grade 4, 5, and 6 students did just that when they headed out to Kananaskis Country earlier in September with the Grade 5 and 6 class from Standard School. Mr. Wiewel organized a great trip and two wonderful hikes where the students experienced firsthand the wonders of the Cordillera region from their social studies unit. Breathtaking views and experience of the effects of the floods were but a few of the fun learning activities they did as they hiked Boulton Creek and Chester Lake trails. School work became an experiential opportunity when done in the great outdoors. The students and staff would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the parents who accompanied us and made our experience happen.

Mertz places 13th, 33rd in London
Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Strathmores Kevin Mertz competed in two races for the 2013 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final in London earlier this month, earning 13th in the aquathlon (1 km swim, 5 km run) on Sept. 11, and 33rd in the sprint triathlon (750 m swim, 20 km bike, 5 km run) on Sept. 13 for his age group. I just spent some time visualizing each leg that I would have to do, and certainly, spending lots of time visualizing transition, because thats where a lot of mistakes can be made. Its also a good place to make up time, and gain some places, said Mertz. Theyre higher placings than I had anticipated, thats for sure especially that 13th. I feel like I could have done better, I made a few mistakes on the triathlon. Mertz was caught by a referee taking off his helmet too early, losing about 15 seconds, and also found his bike ride quite slow through the pouring rain. Gaining that experience, biking through slick roads, will help in the long run. I kind of went there to learn, it was my first world championship; (I was) just
With a collaborative team score of 439, Strathmore High School took home gold at golf provincials from Sept. 23-24 at Strathmore Golf Club and Muirfield Lakes. An SHS team had never before successfully defended and repeated as provincial champions. The squad comprised of: Brady Morris (l-r), Kevin Taplin, Coach Jennifer Meyers, Coach Wes Clark, Austin Biletsky, and Zach Olson.

kind of there for the experience, (Ill) build from there for Edmonton in 2014. Mertz had competed amongst 2,000 in the World Cup in Edmonton this past June, but not at a Grand Final level, which usually has 8,500 athletes (including Olympians); next years Grand Final will take place from Aug. 26-Sept. 1. Mertz felt seeing the Tour of Alberta cross through Strathmore spurred him on even more to compete. The Tour was so cool, he said. Just to be around elite athletes totally got me excited. The swim, Mertz found, was the toughest part. The swim was crazy rough. I got kicked in the nose; I had a good bruise on the side of my face. It was way rougher than I envisioned, he said. I just wanted to go out and really push the swim, and get out of the water. I was top four out of the water in the triathlon. Now, Mertz plans on resting for a month before training for Edmonton 2014 begins. I just want to take a month off, let myself eat some fatty foods and drink pop, those kinds of things, he said. Theyre wicked placings, and Im very pleased with it. Ill try to go as far as I can with it.

Karate for all

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Linda Tucker and her husband are the lead senseis for the Strathmore Karate Club, after starting the sport over 10 years ago on a whim. Twelve years ago, my children and I were looking for something to do together. We heard about this karate program, Linda Tucker said. So my kids and I, we tried it one night and loved it, literally stuck with it. Over the years my husband joined us, and then I took over the club about nine years ago. The pair run three classes under the All Canadian Karate Union, with Strathmore being one of 20 branches in the Calgary area. Every Tuesday the club meets at the Trinity Christian Academy. The Chops class, for ages 4-6, is really about listening, cooperation, and fitness. The Advanced Training class is for children, teens and adults, skilled enough in higher level karate. In that (advanced) class, we do a little more health instruments the nunchucks, and the sparring stuff, Tucker said. You come, you make new friends, you get fit, and you come and do some karate together. Participants are as old as 40, looking to keep in shape, and mambers can even bring their kids to Family Karate classes. It can be anybody, Tucker said. Whats really neat is you train together as a family, our motto has always been, you make a commitment together as a family. The classes run from September to June, similar to the school year, with anywhere from 80-100 students, who can register at anytime through the season. The thing that I observe the most in teaching over the years is the confidence that it builds, particularly for our children and our youth; self-confidence is really huge in their development. As adults, its such a fabulous full body workout. It just offers different things for different ages, Tucker said. Tucker and her husband have competed in Calgary, Las Vegas, and hope to travel to Japan next summer for tournaments. No matter how many medals they earn, the pair truly enjoy giving back to the town. Its about the people in the community, and the families that keep us doing it -- such good people here, she said.

SHS golfers win provincials!

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The Strathmore High School boys golf team claimed the 3A/4A ASAA Provincial Championship with a three shot win over Edmonton Christian on Sept. 24. The hometown boys won gold despite trailing by one shot after the first day of provincials, hosted by Strathmore Golf Club and Muirfield Lakes from Sept. 23-24. SHS had a final team score of 439. This is the first time in the schools history that a team has successfully defended and repeated as provincial champions. In the individual category, Zach Olson earned gold shooting a two day total of 144, while Austin Biletsky captured silver with one more stroke. Roughly 66 schools were represented by 190 golfers. At 2011s provincials, Clarks team finished just short, and earned second place. My entire team is in Grade 12, which is good for them, but disappointing for us, said Wes Clark, coach of the team for seven years. Other team members included Brady Morris and Kevin Taplin. Everyone, they eat, breathe, and sleep golf but Zach is a very consistent player. He doesnt have the ups and downs, and steadily improved in terms of shooting lower and lower scores. In Grade 10, Olson won bronze at zones, followed by silver the next year. Austin is consistent as well, Clark noted, but in a different way. His claim to fame is consistency off the tee, hitting onto the fairways and putting himself in good position, Clark said. On Sept. 17, Strathmore also hosted zones where the Spartans also won gold, shooting 5 under par as a team. Olson scored in the low 70s, and attained gold in the individual category, while teammate Biletsky won bronze.

Stolen Piano Technology Tools

Submitted by Kathie L. Zakresky, Piano Tuner-Technician
I have enjoyed my profession as a Piano Tuner-Technician for 32 years, residing in Strathmore area since 1981. Through my business I have been fortunate to have opportunity to meet many unique, talented and interesting folks who are obviously interested in the piano and the musical arts. During the night of April 18, 2013 the black brief case containing unique tools of my profession as a Piano Tuner-Technician was taken from my van which was parked on my driveway in Strathmore. The case was heavy. I presume that perhaps the culprit(s) may not have realized the nature of the contents. Over the past few months in speaking to many people about this offence the common questions asked were, Why would anyone take those tools? What would they do with them? Why does anyone take anything that doesnt belong to them? Throughout the years living in the comfort of the Strathmore area, I did not ever consider the probability of someone stealing my tools because of their unique nature. For the most part, with the exception of a few special screwdrivers, these tools have no market value or use to anyone, except if one is trained to work in the profession as a Piano Tuner-Technician, and, in this case, one would have invested in their own tools.

The UFA Bisons took part in the Canadian Womans National Hockey teams exhibition tournament Sept. 19-22 in Calgary.

Bisons second to Olympic team

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter In the Canadian Womens Olympic team tournament, the UFA Bisons respectfully placed second, losing 4-1 in the final to the women. Three AMHL teams, including the local triple-A midget team, battled the Olympic team from Sept. 19-22 at the Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary. In round robin, the Bisons were victorious over the Southeast Tigers 4-2, and the Calgary Flames 4-3. They dropped to the Womens Olympic team 7-4 before playing them in the final. Head Coach of the Olympic team, Dan Church, said the tournament was a great success. Hopefully its been good for the midget teams as well, trying to figure out some of their early season rosters, and getting to see them in some good competition, Church said. Our games against them have been really fast paced, and put us under a lot of pres-

sure. Playing four games in four days had both the Bisons and the Olympians tired by the third period. Leading up to the Olympics, the women will play Midget AAA teams roughly 30 times. Its a huge plus for us, its a major factor in our preparation for the Olympics to play games that are close and meaningful and fast and physical, Church said. Speedy games are Churchs best preparation for the United States in the Olympics, though good rivalries have come from the AMHL as well. They play a lot like the United States. It can get chippy and competitive, but the speed is the biggest thing, he said. Its been a great partnership for us and the Alberta Midget Hockey League; really meaningful games that help us get better push our pace and decision making. Team Canada will be cut from 27 down to 21 for the Olympics in December; the UFA Bisons made their final cuts on Sept. 23.

I am grateful to a close colleague who has loaned tools of the trade to me in the interim. As further exposure in attempt to hopefully recover these tools please note these images of the case and a few of the (56+) tools that were in the case. If anyone has seen this case or any of these tools or know anything about where they may be located, it would be appreciated if you could notify the Strathmore RCMP 403934-3968, The Strathmore Times 403-934-5589, or contact 403-9345477 / email kathiezak@gmail.com. Thank you!

The CanSkate, Junior Development, and Senior Development have roughly 100 youth involved in all three programs. Their season runs from September to April, with tournaments for the more competitive levels.

Skating registration still ongoing

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The Strathmore Skating Club has all five of their programs still open to the public; the season runs from Sept. to April, after which, competitions begin. Theres a list of places around Alberta that they can go and compete, said Brenda Struiksma, president of the club. Some they have to qualify, and some they have to enter. It depends; at the beginning of the year, well have a meeting at the end of Sept. for the parents and well decide as a group which ones well go to. Their five programs include: CanSkate for children ages three in up wishing to learn the sports fundamentals, Junior Development which is a little more advanced (for agers 7 and up), and Senior Development for advanced skaters. Depending on what their skill level is, age is not really an issue for the latter program. The remaining two options are PrePower Skate and Power Skate, which prepares children for the upcoming hockey and ringette seasons. These camps usually occur in Aug. and Dec. Roughly 80 kids are involved in the CanSkate program, and 20 in the junior and senior programs. Boys are allowed in the CanSkate, but the upper programs are reserved for young girls. Three coaches and one dance partner teach the figure skaters, including head coach Lindsey Woodcock, who was involved with the program in her youth. To be a coach for figure skating, you have to go through training, and be certified. She has also competed nationally, Struiksma said. Registration is always encouraged and ongoing; contact strathmoreskatingclub@gmail.com if interested.

SHS still winless

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter It was another loss for the Strathmore High Spartans football team on Sept. 20 in Medicine Hat against McCoy; the final score was 47-8. The team is now 0-3. We got some points on the board which is a good thing, said Coach Carl Seafoot. Were still struggling on the execution side but things are coming better. Were making mental mistakes, and missing assignments still the team that plays with the least errors tends to win. Though the team has practice scheduled three nights a week, there is little attendance from players. Their lack of practice shows on the scoreboard. When youre getting 12 to 13 guys out to practice, theres only so much you can do, Seafoot said. The Spartans had an exhibition game on Sept. 24 against Chestermere that will hopefully improve their game for Brooks at home on Sept. 28. We can have a good game against them. Theyre kind of in a similar situation as us, Seafoot said. Their game results are similar, so itll be a good pairing this weekend. Well see how things go. On a brighter note, the bantam Spartans are undefeated, after another victory at Sylvan Lake on Sept. 21, by a score of 28-20. We trailed the entire game up until 1:19 left, we finally went ahead, said Coach Doug Klauck, noting that Misi Vargas touchdown return from Sylvan Lakes kick off sparked the teams comeback. It was too close for comfort for their coach. The boys just werent into it, said Klauck. I think the first two victories came too easy to them; it got to their head and they had to learn how to fight for this past win.

Soccer sub woes

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Strathmore Highs girls soccer team had their first match of the year on Sept. 19, and hoped for a better start to this season they were winless in 2012. Unfortunately, Foothills Composite High School proved too powerful, winning by a landslide of 9-0. SHS had no subs for the game, as four players had prior academic responsibilities. As the career advisor councilor here, Im not going to stop them from building their resume and becoming well rounded individuals, said Coach Kaitrin McDonnell. McDonnell typically likes to carry 18 players on game days, and this was the first time her team had competed in 45-minute halves. Basically, we need to work on conditioning, which we knew coming into it, said McDonnell. We had an extra week this year, instead of last year we pretty much started the first week of games and didnt have a lot of experienced players. This year, we have a lot of Grade 10s, which is great for upcoming years. McDonnell could not attend the first match, but had a positive response from those at the game. I heard wonderful things from our coaches, assistant coaches, and volunteers, she said. We let in a couple goals, and thats just how it is. Our defense is strong, our goalies are strong were trying our very best, but we need to work on our offense. On Sept. 24, the girls traveled to Okotoks to face Holy Trinity Academy, for which the results were not available as of press time. This game is going to be totally different. Im expecting great things,

The Strathmore Spartans peewee football team improved to 2-1 on the season after a 46-6 road win over Red Deer on Sept. 21.

Kevin Link Photo

The Strathmore Senior girls soccer team played their first home game against the Foothills on Sept. 19 at 4:30 p.m. Despite a valiant effort, the Spartans fell 9-0.

The bantams play Springbank at home on Saturday, and are expecting a competitive matchup. We played a very poor game last game, Klauck said. If we play the same way, were in jeopardy of losing. Chuck Holloways peewees were also victorious on Sept. 21, knocking out the Red Deer Hornets on their own turf, 466. This puts the peewees at 2-1 on the season. We had minor penalties on offense, three off-sides, but other than that they played great, Holloway said. Makael Holloway rushed 150 yards, while quarterback Dustin Theissien rushed 120. The young Spartans will face off against Rocky Mountain House on Sept. 28 at home; Holloway is expecting a similar score to last weeks. One of the Red Deer coaches said that overall, our team and Lacombe are pretty much the best teams in the league, Coach Holloway said.
Far Left: The Spartan Junior Girls Volleyball team played a triple header on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at the Strathmore High School. The girls won the first two games and went on to play a final match against the Black Diamond Drillers. With the best out of five in their final match, the junior girls came away with a clean sweep for the night. Left: The Senior Spartans girls team took an early lead in their round robin play against Oilfields High School, which they kept, winning all three games.

McDonnell said about the Holy Trinity game. Were changing up our goalies, were changing up our defense. We saw some people at practice last night and at the game on Thursday that really shined in different positions. So were going to do a little bit of the soccer shuffle, and move some kids around. With another game on Sept. 26 against Highwood High School, McDonnell is hoping this will bring a little more experience to her team, who typically face much stronger schools. I think they got a taste of what the league is about, on Thursday. Foothills Composite is one of the best teams in the league. I know theres only five of us, and were kind of the underdog, she said.

Exhibitions important for juniors

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The Strathmore High varsity girls volleyball squad conquered their first game of the season, blanking Oilfields High School 3-0 on Sept. 18. The first set was good we just pressured them a lot, and served really tough, said Coach Randy Moncks. We dominated the match. But the league is a lot better, theres a lot more teams to face. A fact that proved very true in the girls three exhibition tournaments so far. Their first, the Early Bird tournament, was held on Sept. 7 in Strathmore; most teams only have one practice from the start of the school year before competing. The next weekend, the University of Calgary hosted a tournament for 16 teams. We did really well, Moncks said. We beat Eagle Butte, who beat us in our Earlybird, knocking us out of the semifinal. From Sept. 21-22, SHS traveled to a tournament at SAIT, finishing fifth after losing to Canmore. I was quite happy with that, Moncks said. Lots of new faces got in, so that was nice to see, some kids trying to fit a role for me, and try to figure out how Im going to use them. The exhibition play is key for the younger grades, as during league play, mostly Grade 12s take the spotlight. A lot of the first years and the Grade 11s dont get a chance to play a whole lot. They may get in for a rotation, Moncks said. In my belief, I still want my Grade 12s to do the best they possibly can, and if that means going to quarters and semis, we try to get them there. The varsity girls had their game away in Strathcona Tweedsmuir on Sept. 25, after time of print.

If you are a resident of Strathmore, please take advantage of this opportunity to get to know your 2013 Council and Mayoral Candidates.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Johanna Hoff on Friday, September 20, 2013. For 79 years education was an underlying theme of Jos life. She attended St.Marys Girls in Calgary and studied Education at the Calgary branch of the University of Alberta, where she was captain and star player of the womens basketball team, as well as being involved in student government. Jo was an avid swimmer, having grown up beside the Elbow River, an excellent bridge player and life-long movie buff. After teaching school for one year in Mossleigh, Jo returned to University where she met fellow Education student Vern, and with him obtained her MRS degree instead of her B. Ed. Over the years she took many correspondence and Adult Education courses, eventually heading up the local Adult Ed program. Jo and Vern lived one year in Lethbridge, four years in Bassano and in 1961 moved to their present location between Standard and Gleichen. This was the hub of family gatherings for 50 years. In each community Jo enjoyed the womens Koffee Klatches and also became a favourite substitute teacher. Jo eagerly espoused her new role as farm wife-picking up Native workers, taking meals to the harvest fields, making parts runs as well as driving her children and others to hundreds of sports and arts events, making mountains of sandwiches and squares. She participated fully in the local social life, especially Lions Clubs activities, including the famous Hawaii Night. In that active household she and Vern raised four sons and one daughter- David (Kira, Declan), now currently living in Vancouver; Eldon (Carlee, Lonnie, Janelle)- Standard; Anne Paskevich (Paul)Calgary; Michael (Dorrit- children Rachel, Logan)-Calgary and Erich (Tammy- children Sarah, Simon)-Gleichen. All their children attended post-Secondary Education and have passed the education passion on to their own children. Jo was a member of many local organizations and, before her health gave way, operated Buffalo Jump Arts and Crafts. She was an enthusiastic collector of Native and Western artefacts and antiques. Together in their motor home Jo and Vern visited every state and province and flew to Hawaii in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary in 2006. Jos life was full and busy until several health issues in later years confined her more and more to home and family. She leaves to mourn Vern, her loving husband of 57 years, her children and grandchildren, and countless nieces and nephews. She is survived two sisters, Mary Meigh (Ottawa), Anne Wansink (St. Albert). She was pre-deceased by her brother Fred. Her sisters and brothers-in-law, Donna Clandfield; Lorraine Tennis, Ken and Judith Hoff, and Max and Mary Hoff also mourn her loss. Hundreds of relatives and friends will recall the good times at Aunt Jos swimming pool, her thousands of books and magazines, shelves of crafts and antiques, dining tales groaning under delicious food, and the warm hospitality of an interesting and intelligent woman. Donations in Johannas memory may be made directly to the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation (#200, 119-14th St. N.W., Calgary, T2N 1Z6). A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 27, 2013 at Hope Community Covenant Church at 1:00 p.m. To send condolences, please visit www.wheatlandfuneralhome.ca.

With a heavy heart we announce the passing of Mildred at the Strathmore Hospital with family by her side. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Mildred was predeceased by her loving husband of 60 years, Vernon, in 2003 and son-in-law Larry Sallis in 1998. She is survived by her four children, Gail Richards (Frank), Carol Sallis (Gordon McNicol), Raymond Moen (Cheryl) and Carman Moen (Judith); thirteen grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly. Mildred was born and raised at Unity, Saskatchewan, completed her education in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and worked as a secretary at the Sanitarium in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She then moved to Elrose, Saskatchewan to continue working at an insurance agency. There she met and married Vernon Moen who farmed at Houghton. In 1953 the family moved to Lyalta to continue farming. Mildred was a considerate, thoughtful, and caring person. She had a strong sense of justice and treated everyone fairly. Mildred loved her family, community, music, art, and reading. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to The Arthritis Society (#300, 1301 8th St. SW Calgary, T2R 1B7) or a charity of your choice. Come celebrate her life with us on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Strathmore United Church (410-4 St., Strathmore) at 11:00 a.m. To send condolences, please visit www.wheatlandfuneralhome.ca.

LOUIE GEERAERT
Beloved father and grandfather, its 18 years since youve been gone. God gave us the strength to carry on. The things we feel so deeply, are the hardest things to say, but we, your family love you, in a very special way. They say that memories are golden, well that may be true, but we never wanted memories, we only wanted you. Its said time heals all sorrows, we know that isnt so, because it hurts as much today, as it did 18 years ago. If tears could build a stairway, and heartaches make a lane, wed walk the path to Heaven, and bring you home again. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same, but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.
