Media Studies- GHD Advert (Denotations and Connotations) In the advert a woman in a red dress is shown.

This connotes that she could be romantic or sexually confident. However red is also a connotation of danger which could come with the woman. The light isnt centred on her showing that she isnt the main objective/part of the advert. I will come back to the centre of the advert later. Another denotation is that two cherub like figures are above the woman. This connotes that the woman is meant to be angelic or holy. The cherubs are also holding a ring. Used in this sense I can connote that this ring is actually a halo, making the woman an angel. Normally the halo is floating above an Angel on its own but as this one is being held I can connote th at she is either an Angel in Training (still not a full angel) or she is higher than an Angel and demands cherubs to hold the halo (Waiting on her) . Looking below the woman you can find three men, on their knees, looking up at the woman. I can connote from the look on their faces and their position that they are admiring her. They could also be praying or worshipping her which would give the advert a religious connotation. The lack of eye contact connotes that she is oblivious to them or even arrogant because she knows she is of higher status to them. On two of the mens shirts there are Skull and Crossbones. This could connote that they are bad or evil. It could also connote that, paired with their level (Low) and lower status, they are in Hell. This would mean that the woman, being higher, is in Heaven. The Hellish world below the women also seems industrial. I know this because in the background you can see that there are metal pipes. This universally connotes an industrial feel. The main part of the advert is in fact the womans hair. Everything points towards this aspect. The lighting connotes that her hair is heavenly and the fact that the advert is GHD it cant be anything else. The lighting is on the hair give a golden shimmer to it, similar to t he GHDs in the corner of the advert relating them together. Relating the two features together also connotes that if you buy the products you will be radiant like the light shining on both of them. The lighting also connotes the importance of both of the points lit. The cherubs in the advert might not actually be servicing the women herself, but her hair. The fact that the hair is prominent could mean that this could also give her sexual confidence.
