Future of Forecasting : Our highest priority going forward is to fix our broken political system. Short of that, there is no viable long-term solution to our badly warped economy. In America we are being pulled apart politically in ways unrivaled since the aftermath of the 1929 crash. My first realization of a striking shift in our politics was brought to my attention by the staunch conservative three-term senator from Utah, Robert Bennett. He feared that despite his strong approval ratings, his 2010 reelection bid was by no means secure. In his 2004 reelection, Bennett won 69 percent of the vote. His problem, as he stated it, was unexpected contenders for his Senate seat from his political RIGHT. [The 18-year veteran finished third at the Utah Republican convention and his seat is now held by Sen. Mike Lee, an instigator of the effort to shut down the government over Obamacare.] It was my first awareness of what later came to be known as the Tea Party, a political movement that emerged in 2009 and became a powerful force in the 2010 election. Both uncompromising sides of our ongoing debate on fiscal and other issues need to recognize that financial crisis lurks should we fail to resolve our deeply disruptive fiscal imbalance. And that imbalance is far greater than the official data portray [because of contingent liabilities to the U.S. government from possible rescues of large financial firms and iconic nonfinancial firms] At risk is the status the American economy has held as the preeminent world economic power for more than a century. My introduction to political Washington came in the 1960s when I was first invited to the dinners that were hosted by the Washington Posts Katharine Graham, pundit Joseph Alsop, and others. To my recollection, the invitees to these dinners were ritualistically half Democrats and half Republicans. Today, attendance at similar dinners is predominantly a 95 to 5 percent split, with either Democrats or Republicans in the majority. The bias toward unconstrained deficit spending is our top domestic economic problem. --Dedication : For my beloved Andrea Preorder : $27.77 hardcover; $18.99 Kindle; $26.96 audiobook CD http://amzn.to/18bKRjy SPOTTED, atop A1 of The New York Times: Rory Cooper, communications director to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (walking directly behind the Leader); Doug Heye, deputy chief of staff (behind Rory); and Allen Jamerson, Cantors new special assistant (bow tie). http://goo.gl/X4TqAl

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp is pushing forward with the idea of a tax code overhaul despite expectations that this Congress is too fractured to take on such a big project. The provision, available only to the roughly one-third of federal taxpayers who itemize, allows taxpayers to deduct from their income the value of state and local property tax paid, as well as state and local income or sales tax paid. Claimed by 46.6 million Americans in 2011, the deduction reduced U.S. tax revenues that year by an estimated $42 billion, making it one of the largest tax breaks in the code. --PLAYBOOK FACTS OF LIFE: This is being looked at, no doubt. Mike Farah's desk at the Funny or Die studios in Hollywood is an index card with a list wrangling talent, polishing scripts and arranging shoots Farah and his team [are] developing as many as 20 projects involving the healthcare law. The first will go live on Sept. 30, the day before Americans are supposed to be able to enroll in the new health insurance marketplaces. Farah's drive stems from a series of White House meetings, culminating in a July session in the Roosevelt Room in which the president asked for help promoting the law from a conference table full of artists, entertainers and creative executives including Farah, Amy Poehler, Jason Derulo, Michael Cera and Jennifer Hudson. On the other side , powerful conservative groups are trying to persuade Americans to opt out of the law. This week, the group Generation Opportunity aired a Web video depicting Uncle Sam popping up between the legs of a young woman at the gynecologist's office. The video drew more than 600,000 views within 36 hours. Americans for Prosperity, the free-market advocacy group that spent more than $33 million to try to defeat Obama in the 2012 election, has hosted telephone forums and town-hall-style meetings as part of a 35-state campaign to block the healthcare law. We now have a funded, professional, logistically proficient infrastructure that, when one of these fights [arises] can really spring into action, said Americans for Prosperity President Tim Phillips. [Farah] agrees to show one video , which makes the case to sign up for insurance with the laugh-cringe moments you might expect from Funny or Die: a little girl tumbling head-first off her rocking horse, a skateboarder's ill-fated trick, a boy attempting a jump on his bike and ending up limp on the asphalt. Valerie Jarrett loved this video, Farah said. http://goo.gl/HP8XRe SECOND CHANCE FOR RESOLUTIONS: As of tomorrow, there will be 100 days left in 2013.

SECOND CHANCE FOR RESOLUTIONS: As of tomorrow, there will be 100 days left in 2013. What would you like to celebrate on Jan. 1, 2014? THE ECONOMIST cover, all eight global editions, The weakened West, showing a lion looming over a map of Syria with his dentures out! America, Russia and Syria: The deal over Syrias chemical weapons marks a low for those who cherish freedom: In Western capitals the sigh of relief over Syria is audible. Barack Obama, while admitting that his diplomacy fell short on style points, claims that he got what he wanted. Syrias president, Bashar Assad, will sign the convention against chemical weapons and get rid of the agents that he used to kill around 1,500 of his own citizens last month. Even better, Russia shares responsibility for enforcing the plan, which could lead to broader co-operation with America, while Syrias other ally, Iran, is making noises about negotiating with the Great Satan over its own nuclear programme. Obama has managed to avoid the sort of humiliating defeat in Congress that David Cameron suffered in Britains Parliament. Now that military action is unlikely, Mr Cameron will not be embarrassed as a no-show. Franois Hollande no longer faces a domestic fight over his willingness to take France to war on Congresss command. Step back, and the outcome looks rotten . For a start, the deal itself is flimsy because it will be so hard to enforce. Americas credibility as an ally has been undermined. Last, Americas credibility as an opponent has also suffered. The Wests great problem is the paralysing legacy of Iraq and Afghanistan, exacerbated by a weak economy in Europe and, in America, vicious partisan politics. Everyone knew that Western citizens were tired of fighting, but until Mr Obama and Mr Cameron asked them, nobody knew just how tired. The West is not on an inexorable slide towards irrelevance. Far from it. Americas economy is recovering, and its gas boom has undermined energy-fuelled autocracies. Dictatorships are getting harder to manage: from Beijing to Riyadh, people have been talking about freedom and the rule of law. See the cover . http://goo.gl/Ud5sBE Read the editorial. http://goo.gl/XexzNu --Reuters/Amsterdam: Syria has handed over details of its chemical arsenal to U.N.-backed weapons watchdog, meeting first deadline of U.S.-Russian disarmament accord which could avert Western air strikes. ** A message from Business Roundtable : Americas business leaders want Washington to solve problems that threaten economic growth and job creation. Fix Americas broken immigration system to strengthen national security and promote a healthier economy.

Washington, its time to act. Learn more at www.businessroundtable.org . ** FISCAL FRACAS Obama calls Boehner, rules out debt negotiations, by Jake Sherman and John Bresnahan: Obama called Speaker Boehner Friday night to reiterate his hard-line stance. The Ohio Republicans office said the president called to say he wouldnt negotiate with him on the debt limit. Given the long history of using debt limit increases to achieve bipartisan deficit reduction and economic reforms, the speaker was disappointed but told the president that the two chambers of Congress will chart the path ahead, a Boehner aide said in an email. It was a brief call. A White House official said Obama spoke to both Boehner and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. The President telephoned Speaker Boehner and told him again that the full faith and credit of the United States should not and will not be subject to negotiation, the official said in a statement The President reiterated that it is the constitutional responsibility of the US Congress to pass the nations budget and pay the nations bills. The presidents position is that Congress should raise the $16.7 trillion debt ceiling without any accompanying budget changes or reforms a so-called clean debt ceiling increase. Yet its unclear if such a hike could pass in the House or the Senate. [A]fter the call, [Pelosi] sent out a letter to fellow Democrats asking them to give her maximum flexibility by keeping their powder dry as the debate over government funding and a debt-limit increase continues. http://goo.gl/ivJQ01 --Senate turns to CR that defunds Obamacare, by Jake Sherman and John Bresnahan : The House vote late Friday morning was 230-189, with Republican Rep. Scott Rigell (Va.) as the only Republican to vote against the $986 billion, three-month package. Democratic Reps. Mike McIntyre of North Carolina and Jim Matheson of Utah crossed the aisle and voted for the bill. Matheson and McIntyre both opposed Obamacares passage. The Republican-drafted continuing resolution, or CR, keeps the government operating until Dec. 15, allowing the House and Senate time to try to reach deals on the 12 individual appropriations bills. None of those bills has been enacted yet. But the CR is certain to return to Speaker Boehners chamber next week in drastically different shape following Senate action Reid has said that defunding Obamacare is dead and Democrats can strip out the language with a simple majority. whatever he can, including a talking filibuster, to stall the measures passage in the upper chamber. Following Fridays rare display of party unity, the House Republican Conference will be tested next week when the bill returns. In a closed-door House GOP meeting before the CR vote, Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Mike Kelly urged his colleagues to stick with Boehner. I dont want this to be like Palm Sunday, where we bring the speaker in on a little donkey and then next Friday, we crucify him, Kelly said, according to several sources. http://goo.gl/zMyhSi --THE HEADLINES: WSJ 5-col. lead, Health Law Thrust Into Fiscal Fights: House GOP Votes to Strip Money for Insurance Overhaul as Oct. 1 Shutdown Deadline Approaches N.Y. Clinton's advisers note that she has avoided the circuit of Democratic dinners and events in early voting states such as Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, and focused on issues about which she long has been passionate -- the status of women and girls around the globe, early childhood education and the trafficking of wildlife in Africa. Congress has no constitutional responsibility to put the nation further into debt, but rather the opposite. We've gone from eras of emergency spending to everything becoming a necessary expenditure regardless of how much the debt balloons.

That's because the money goes to fund people and things that the American taxpayer never authorized in the first place. Our so-called 'public servants' are as decadent as Marie Antoinette and Caligula rolled into one insatiable, nation-killing monster. Term limits must be instituted. Allowing Congressmen to serve for 50 years by repeatedly winning re-election by increasing welfare rolls and devouring industry is a system that rewards corruption and ineptitude. They only work to siphon money away from the citizenry and only live to enjoy their obscene perks. The founders could not have predicted such a wholly self serving bunch of elitist fools.

@Hoptop---"while the "middle class" and poor pay the bills." You're a dope. What "bills" are you speaking of? Just the top 1% you speak of pay over 30% of all total fed. taxes. That amount also equals the same amount of the bottom 95% combined. PLUS, Half of that 95% don't even TAXES. What if that half just paid $1.00 a year??? Without the top 1%, you would be paying $15+ a gallon for gas, etc.

President Broke Obummer

whooosh 11 hours ago

Not necessarily, when I made 50K per year I was shocked at what little I paid in taxes. When I made 73K, I started to get hit....when I made 95K, It wondered why I was working so hard. To think the TAKERS make 35K with all the goodies they get....makes me not want to work at all....I'm on pace to make 100K now....not sure I'm in a hurry to do that again.

Actually, if you fall in the 25-40k range and don't have any deductions, 35% or more in taxes. Basically the tax code is just hugely broken, but no one in government wants to do the work to fix it.

Assuming your single then at 25K your in the 15% income tax bracket. deductions and earned income tax credits your going to be close to a 10% income tax rate. and medicare add another 7.5% so that's 17.5% in Federal taxes. At $400K the income tax rate goes to 40% or $160,000 per year for income taxes only. I agree it looks broken to me as well.

Um only if your SS check at the end of the year is less that $25K, if over that you pay fed income taxes for singles. For married it's 32K. http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/ap...

Whooosh, right over your head. The upper income wage earners are not "the rich." They give up their lives for marginal wealth and pay through the nose in INCOME TAX. So you've fallen for the smokescreen because it fits your outdated conservative mantra that could hold water 40 years ago but is now irrelevant. The real rich don't pay income taxes, because the real rich, who don't give a crap about you or me or Mr. $200k a year, DO NOT DERIVE THEIR INCOME FROM WAGES. taxes on capital gains were lowered out of the good graces of government? You can repeat the mantra that the rich pay all the income taxes, but just tells you how bad things have gotten. The people who don't work for wages pay more than all the people earning minimum wage BECAUSE THE MIDDLE CLASS HAS BEEN DECIMATED. we paying attention?

You are correct, the middle class and the poor pay far less taxes than their 1% counterparts; which is of course is directly proportionate to their wealth, i.e. 20% of $10 million is far more than 20% of $100k. But the point which I believe Hoptop may have been trying to make was that poor and middle class are the only people that do all the heavy lifting, creating, and problem solving. IMO, the rich contribute nothing - allocating wealth; i.e. investing is not creating, it is artificially guiding people as resources to create.

Your confusion is understandable if you haven't studied economics. different worth. You pay less for a pair of jeans than you do for a new car. understand why. Different jobs also have different "worth". While the "bankers" may be overcompensated, in your eyes, you aren't the one paying them for their service. companies need capital, bankers facilitate that need and are compensated according to that service they provided. Wall Street provides the market for this capital to be raised and traded. Other companies, institutional investors, "rich" people, etc, provide that money in order to make a profit from it. And that is our system. It may not be perfect, but it is much more efficient than the government doing it because a group of people with total control cannot replace a natural system. A group of individuals with power will serve their own interests first, as we've seen in the past with Russia and China, because that is human nature. best of our human nature. While it's understandable to think that certain careers shouldn't make so much, you have to realize that someone else thought that the service they provided was worth that much. think someone should make more, then pay them more for their service or their product next time you receive it. This system, overall, benefits those who work hard. While some are luckier than others, and

invictvs, Very well stated. As poor of a job that barrak has done, it is hard to pick out what was his worst. But I think his class envy may end up being the most lasting. to class envy, intentional I might add, more than anyone else in this country. thought like you, or heard your message, just maybe some could be convinced to get off their duff and work hard. It pay's off.

Well said. Throughout history, dictators and tyrants have always used class envy to stir up the masses. The 1% vs 99% argument is nothing new. Both Hitler and Stalin used it to gain power.

Adam, I see your point, but using your logic, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerburg, etc. have been taking advantage of all of us for years, giving us nothing in return while making millions. The truth is, we all have a chance to create. But unless you create a unique product or service, you will not make much more than the average man. Carpenters, masons, etc. are a dime a dozen. Yes they are needed, but not unique. Please name a "rich" person who has not contributed anything. Yes some people inherit money, but at some point, someone created something in a big way. The promise of America has always been, "If you dream big, work hard and are lucky, you too can become wealthy." But Adam, you are saying that is a wrong concept. If you want to distribute the wealth evenly, go to a socialist country, but don't go to Russia or China. Even they see the value of capitalism, at least in a limited form, as their leaders refuse to give up power, but are benefitting from limited capitalism, as it is the only way to stimulate the economy in the flawed socialist system

Maybe a lot of Wall Street guys are overcompensated, but the allocation of capital is a very important role in the economy and people who do it successfully should be well compensated.

What are we being billed for? If the top 1% pay most of the bills (and I don't deny that) and have 30% invested in the MIC then these bills for endless wars everywhere under the sun ends up being a net positive. Another 30% invested in a banking system that was 100% funded after leveraging up to 40:1 on a dollar and flat-ass losing . . . well that's just gravy. How's about this: Stop being CHUMPED!?

Actually, for the last several years running, Google and other sites have reported that 47% of U.S. citizens pay no income tax. Granted, they may be paying sales tax or FICA, but it appears to me that 53% of us are pedaling like crazy just to stay current with bills, mortgages, and

taxes, while the rest are coasting, possibly receiving Sect. 8 allowances, food stamps, disability (aka 'permanent unemployment benefits), ADC, etc. No wonder the country is circling the drain. The work ethic seems to have moved on to places like Brazil or China. I doubt the '1%' have much to do with that, other than funding election of compliant politicians.

"The work ethic seems to have moved on to places like Brazil or China. I doubt the '1%' have much to do with that, other than funding election of compliant politicians." The 1% shifted the jobs to the third world and allowed 10s of millions no-skill/low skill workers into this country. So, the 48% that don't pay taxes don't have a chance to pay taxes. They don't have a job.

There are still plenty of low/no skill jobs in the US. Go out and ask a young person under 25 if he's employed. One in five will say they are not. One in three if they're black. ones unemployed if they would be willing to work at McDonalds or Walmart if offered a job there. 90% of them will say they would not.

And why did our politicians do this? Ask Carter, Clinton, Obama why they did it. Under the guise of trade negotiations. These same idiots gave illegals benefits, including social security, and an open border. We spend hundreds of billions a year on illegals. Not even to mention the job losses. And before any communist says we have only lost very low paying jobs, we have "discovered" these illegals in our factories, including jobs as foremen, managers, etc. You see, you only had to check every 10 years about a persons legality at companies. And now Obama has eliminated that under his unconstitutional executive orders and our own criminal head at the
