THANKSGIVING AFTER COMMUNION

ACCION DE GRACIAS DESPUES DE LA COMMUNIN
It is not all that long ago since Catholics returned from receiving Holy Communion and we would kneel down, place our faces in our hands to put aside distractions and make our Thanksgiving to God for giving us Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. If a good preparation before Communion is so important, a good Thanks-giving after Communion is of even greater importance.

sweet flavor of those savory delicacies. In like manner, when we have received the precious Body of Jesus Christ, we should take care not to lose its heavenly flavor by turning too soon to the cares and business of the world. Saint Francis de Sales expresses the same idea. "When the merchants of India," he says, "have brought home their precious porcelain, they are very careful in conveying it to their storehouses lest they should stumble and break their costly wares. In like manner should the Christian, when one carries the priceless treasure of Our Lord's Body, walk with great care and circumspection in order not to lose the costly gift committed to ones keeping?" The meaning of both Saints is that after Communion we should spend some time in devout recollection and prayer. This is the general practice of good Catholics. And indeed, reason itself tells us that a good thanksgiving after Communion is of even more importance than a good preparation before it. If we are required to pause and consider what we are about to do when we approach Our Lord, what should be our devotion when He is actually in our hearts? When the Blessed Virgin Mary visited Saint Elizabeth, the aged Saint was astonished at the reverent humility of the Mother of God, and said: "How does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?" Now, in Holy Communion, it is the Lord Himself that comes to us, the Eternal "Wisdom which proceeded from the mouth of the Most High," the "Lord and Prince of the House of Israel, Who appeared to Moses in the burning bush," the "King of nations," "Emmanuel," "our King and Law-giver." To remain indifferent after having received the Blessed Eucharist is to show either a total want of faith or a levity and stupidity unworthy of a reasonable being. The Mass is something we celebrate together as Church and as a worshipping assembly united to Christ through the priest. It is not just something we do as individual Christians. The most precious moments of our day, our week, our lifetime are those immediately after Holy Communion. For a brief quarter of an hour or less our hearts are small sectors of heaven. Jesus Christ, Son of God and Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, Savior, Master, King of Kings, is there within us, we become womb, tabernacle to hold Him sacred within us. He is with us in His sacred humanity that reached out and touched the multitudes of earth and that today is the joy of the all in heaven. He is present in His divinity that is the essential object of heaven's Beatific Vision. Our Thanksgiving after Holy Communion, or our failure to give time to that thanksgiving, has a somewhat startling way of weakening this wonderful mystery of faith. A hurried departure, from this most precious fifteen minutes of our lives could seem to indicate a shallowness or lack of faith, perhaps a part of a weak human nature. Mass is intimately united to Christian life and mission. The final blessing and dismissal sends us forth to transmit what we have received to our brothers and sisters. If we leave directly after Communion, then we lose this important component of our spiritual life. Please stay until Mass has ended. Saint Alphonsus relates that a priest, seeing a man leave the church immediately after Communion, sent the servers of Mass with lighted candles to accompany him home. "What is the matter?" asked the man. "Oh," said the boys, "we have come to accompany Our Lord, Who is still present in your heart." Perhaps Saint Alphonsus should reappear to us today and inspire us by the same devout challenge! A missionary priest one time asked a congregation: Who was the person who left the Last Supper early? Do you know who that is? Do we wish to celebrate Mass and Christs life-death as he did? Or do we wish to join the other eleven in going forth to thankfully celebrate Christ in the Eucharist, Christ in our lives. The time of Giving Thanks after receiving Holy Communion is such a sacred time with Christ.

Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When the Roman Empire turned a favorable eye toward the once-persecuted Christians, among the effects was a population explosion in the baptismal font, as Christian sympathizers stepped from the shadows. With more and more people becoming Christians, laws were passed to protect Sunday as a work-free day. Soon, it became possible to celebrate Mass later in the morning, rather than the older custom of gathering before dawn to celebrate Eucharist. Amazingly, despite the increasing numbers of Christians, there was great resistance to adding to the number of worship events; the Eucharist that began as a few friends around a table soon was transformed into a more formal event with throngs crowding a large hall. All the Christians in a city or town would gather around the bishop for the one Sunday Eucharist, and only when the crowds became unmanageable was there an impulse to divide the assembly by splitting off a new bishop and flock. Now, sixteen hundred years later, many parishes see a need to trim or combine Mass schedules. This is often seen as tough surgery. Yet our forebears in the faith would see it as a gain: a filling up of the Eucharist with a large and vigorous assembly, a fullness of ministry, an opportunity to make the Church more fully visible and stronger for service.

Thanks to all who serve the Sick and Homebound of our parish for your wonderful service to those who bear the Cross of Christ in their sufferings and handicaps!
We are grateful for those who helped us to gather information this past spring to know who are serving as Ministers of Care to the Sick and Homebound. We still lack some information on those who are taking Holy Communion to those in need. So, if you have not given this information to us already (including family members who take communion home to their loved ones) we need it. The Bishop would like the names of all who serve as Eucharistic Ministers in Church and to the sick. Please include the following information: Your name Your address and phone number Name of Person you visit His/her address and phone number How long you have been taking communion to him/ her Could you please bring the information to the parish secretaries at the parish office who will give it to Father Tomy; he is coordinating our Parish database. This will also help us if a Minister becomes sick and we need to find a substitute to take communion to your loved one/ sick/homebound you minister to. If youve previously contacted the parish office and your communion responsibilities havent changed, you do not have to contact the parish office again. Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.
