High-dynamic-range imaging (HDRI or HDR) is a set of methods used in imaging and photography to capture a greater dynamic range between

the lightest and darkest areas of an image than current standard digital imaging methods or photographic methods. HDR images can represent more accurately the range of intensity levels found in real scenes, from direct sunlight to faint starlight, and is often captured by way of a plurality of differently exposed pictures of the same subject matter. This is nothing new. HDR video however is new. Currently there are some new developments. Most notably is the RED HDRX option, on the RED EPIC.

WHAT EXACTLY IS HDRX? HDRx is a RED invention that is built into every EPIC and Scarlet camera giving the user an option for extended dynamic range when the situation calls for it from 2 to 6 stops over native by preset. Basically it records two video streams. One underexposed and one overexposed. With RED software you can combine the streams into one High Dynamic Range image.

So far, nothing new and nothing special...

Only we want the REAL HDR LOOK
Untill now only available by using HDR through photos, with a minimum of 3 exposures. See the picture in the background. Happily, we figured it out to achieve this beloved photorealistic style on moving 5K (5 times full HD) digital film. By using the RED EPIC - HDRX and an extensive postproduction proces. Below the results.

But we didnt just stop there...

We combined our HDR proces with our EDI technique. Read about EDI on page 7. Combining the best of two worlds in a total UNIQUE way of perceiving moving images. This creates a UNIQUE PHOTO-REALISTIC HYPER REAL VIEWING EXPERIENCE.
