FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
> september marks the end of summer and beginning of autumn, as well as the time of wine and gastronomy festivals. in addition to listing popular open-air festivals in budapest we have put together the best exhibitions, fairs and programs especially for you. our sunday brunch series continues in september. at the closing event of the summer, portuguese week, our chef is preparing delicious sunday lunch dishes such as bacalhau, frango piri-piri and portuguese egg tart, naturally complemented with fine portuguese wines. throughout the month, our main emphasis is on autumnal flavours: grilled meats, grapes and cheeses, as well as fruit plinkas. i would like to take this opportunity to recommend fascinating articles on, for instance, the latest chapter in the century-old history of our hotel and the interview with sndor, our store supervisor, who talks about what it means to him to work in the hotel, and his personal experiences over the years. in september, the royal spa turns the spotlight on silky smooth skin, with a regenerating, rejuvenating, hydrating, peeling gel ritual combined with massage. together with the varied budapest programs, it is also well worth looking at the exhibition spanning the more than 100 years of history of our hotel. you will find this exhibition in the lower lobby area. i really hope that the september edition of our newsletter sparks your imagination, and that you find here programs that meet your needs and interests..

supporting children
> corinthia hotel budapest believes that as well as guaranteeing maximum guest satisfaction, it is equally
important to act as a role model in the area of corporate social responsibility. at the end of 2012 we finalized a strategic cooperation agreement with the csodalmpa (magic lamp) wish fulfilling foundation, now in its 10th year of operation. we have a common purpose: to help people in need. the magic lamp wish fulfilling foundation makes the wishes and hopes of children who suffer from life-threatening diseases come true, giving them unforgettable experiences and breaking the dull routine of hospital treatment. the foundation acting together with generous, supportive individuals and companies has been fulfilling wishes since november 2003, in which time it has made the dreams of around 2,000 seriously ill children come true. it is our intention to contribute to this worthy cause and brighten up the lives of needy children in 2013.
hotel originally opened as the grand hotel royal in 1896 and was entirely renovated and, in parts, rebuilt in 2003, following its acquisition by corinthia hotels. among its many attributes, the hotel features a majestic grand ballroom and the royal spa- itself an extensive renovation of an original 19th century spa which adjoined the original hotel - that has once again regained its rightful place as budapests most luxurious spa.
Sndor Fehr,
STORE SUPERVISOR
For how long have you been working at this hotel? Tell us what your job is and what your responsibilities are. i originally trained as a confectioner and to begin with i found work in this area in a small hotel for three years. after this, i applied for a job as a storekeeper with the corinthia hotel budapest. by a strange and perhaps fortunate coincidence, the interview was on my birthday. during the interview i was successful in convincing the management that i would be their best choice. at the moment my job is to arrange the storage and issuance of storeroom items that arrive in the hotel, and of course handle any related administration. i order products working in close coordination with procurement. i also participate in the end-of-month storeroom audit. if needed, i am pleased to help the food & beverage department in their audit or goods acceptance as well. i am always happy to take up such opportunities because they promote communication between departments, reinforce solidity and allow me to glimpse the activities of other areas. What was your happiest experience during these many years spent at the hotel? i have worked at the hotel since 18 november 2002, and in that time i have had many very pleasant experiences, so perhaps for this reason it is very difficult to highlight just one. and yet, if i did have to chose, then i would like to share one of the nicest personal experiences i have had here. i am a big football fan, and particularly for the real madrid team, something that my colleagues know all too well. there was a time when barcelona won a whole series of titles, while real madrid was on the losing side. during this losing streak, i was ribbed quite a lot. then, as it generally happens, one fine day the situation turned around and i was able to return all the teasing to my colleagues. to my great pleasure, i would add, and to the dismay of the losers! What do you enjoy doing in your leisure time? when im not working, i prefer quieter forms of relaxation. i particularly like and am interested in italian gastronomy, the flavours of italian cooking. i enjoy sports and i always try to catch chelsea and real madrid matches. i will shortly be able to represent the corinthia team at the amcham sports day. i like formula 1, i am a big fan of hamilton.
interesting time in the life of the grand hotel royal highlighting special personalities who left their mark on the hotel. in 1928, a certain brahm pl checked into the royal. 15 years earlier, as a young music student, he had admired the stars who were staying here. now he was known as paul abraham, the famous composer. very few have left us so many evergreens as abraham. he spent almost two years at the hotel. from here he watched the world premiere of his operetta der gatte des frauleins. he lived in room 205, where he worked on victoria and her hussar, which premiered in budapest two years later, in 1930. it was a smashing success! of course the grand hotel atmosphere inspired his hotel-operetta ball at the savoy, which granted him world-wide recognition. he started writing film scores for ufa (german) films: film music is the purest form of the art; here we really have to show what we can, he said in 1931. in 1933, however, the persecution of Jews in germany drove him out of the country, to new york. he returned to europe after the war and died in hamburg in 1960. one night during the swinging 20s a pair of bright eyes peeped into the palm court. Josephine baker, the black venus, had arrived in budapest. she was the star of the paris revue theatre folies bergre. baker was particularly famous for a highly acclaimed performance, the scandalous banana leaf dance. her husband count pepito di abatino a terribly jealous man, stayed with her at the royal. he had already suffered from the open secret that Josephine had an affair with simenon, the belgian author and inventor of inspector maigret. but here, unfortunately, the black venus caught the attention of a young, hot-blooded hungarian cavalry officer. andrew czolovodi sent her bunches of red roses and love letters. as the hungarian did not show the least intention to abandon his efforts, count pepito di abatino challenged czolovodi to a duel in st. stephens cemetery. the duel lasted only 10 minutes, ending when di abatino was scratched by czolovodis blade. a few years later, the appearance of Josephine baker was accompanied by severe protests against the decadent negro dancer. from germany, the marching boots of a new era were sounding. and hungary listened. the movies were coming back to the royal. this time they were nicknamed the talkies. the first hungarian sound movie a kk blvny (a blue idol) appeared in 1931. the new hungarian caesar of film istvn ger, gave this talented local industry a new lease of life and reopened the royal apollo cinema. the economic crises of the outgoing 1920s affected the travel market all over europe. the 1920s appear today like a dance on the volcanoes, coming to an end with the big wall street crash in 1929. during the 1930s the newly formed state travel office ibusz (idegenforgalmi, beszerzsi, utazsi s szlltsi rt. = tourism, acquisition, travel and transport plc.) reached agreements with polish, german, italian, swiss and british travel agencies, which led to increased tourism between 1933 and 1937. the number of visitors rose from 102,000 to 183,000 in this period. however, state-controlled tourism rarely brings a high class of traveler. during these years hungary was ruled by mikls horthy de nagybnya, duke of szeged and otranto, the self-styled his serene highness the regent of hungary. Jokingly referred to as the admiral without a fleet he was the last commander of the austro-hungarian navy horthy was, in a country without a coastline, ruling as the regent of a kingdom without a king. a staunch conservative, horthy eventually began to sympathize with fascism and appointed several pro-fascist officials to cabinet posts in the 1930s. when the nazi government of adolf hitler began to rise to power, putting pressure on neighboring nations to return territories lost after the war, horthy became a willing accomplice. this year the restored and rebuilt grand hotel royal celebrates the 10th anniversary of its reopening on april 30, 2003 as corinthia hotel. several historical periods and chapters will be presented to the readers in the coming issues to commemorate this magnificent hotel.
