SECTION 79 Steel sheet piles generally (B12) 79.001

SHEET PILE WALLS Materials and workmanship for steel sheet piles shall be in accordance with Section 76 (General requirements for embedded retaining walls), and ICE Specification, section B12, as amended by this Section of the Model Clauses. Unless otherwise specified in Appendix 79/1, the minimum section modulus, and web thickness of the sheet pile shall be determined by the Contractor as part of the wall design, and shall be sized to permit installation to the required depth through the anticipated ground conditions without significant damage or declutching. Unless otherwise specified in Appendix 79/1, the minimum length of embedded sheet pile shall be as shown on the Contract Drawings.

Materials (B12.3.1)

79.002

Further to ICE Specification, clause B12.3.1, the following shall apply. New steel sheet piling and associated walings, tie rods etc. shall be supplied by manufacturers and/or stockists who have quality systems approved to BS EN ISO 9001 by a body accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) or manufacturers and/or stockists who have quality systems that can be demonstrated to the Employers Representative to be equivalent. The Contractor shall state where second hand material is to be used. The Contractor shall provide documentary evidence to verify the steel strength, and shall confirm that the condition and section is as that assumed in the design. The Contractor shall confirm that the second hand material meets the limits on loss of thickness of material detailed in Appendix 79/2.

Fabricated sheet 79.003 piles (B12.3.2)

Further to ICE Specification, clause B12.3.2, where a change in the direction of the line of piles is specified, special corner or junction piles shall be provided. Box piles fabricated from U-profile piles shall be fabricated by continuously welding the mating faces of the interlocks. Box piles fabricated from Z-profile piles shall be fabricated by continuously welding the joined interlocks of the half sections.

Pile installation system (B12.4.6)

79.004

Where specified in Appendix 79/3, piles shall be installed with a vibrationless jacking system. Where jetting is adopted in conjunction with a vibrationless pile jacking system, careful control of the jetting process will be required to prevent damage to adjacent structures and services.

Welding of sheet 79.005 piles (B12.6)

Further to ICE Specification, clause B12.6, the following shall apply. Welding to steel sheet piles shall be carried out in accordance with Section 90 (Structural steelwork), and the sheet pile manufacturer's recommendations in respect of electrodes. The requirements specified in Section 90 (Structural steelwork) in respect of welding procedures shall apply. Weld metal shall not encroach into the clutch of the sheet pile. Welds shall be inspected and non-destructively tested using ultrasonic methods in accordance with BS EN 1714 and magnetic particle inspection in accordance with BS EN 1290 for 10% of their length at locations specified by the Employers Representative. All welds found to exceed a limit of imperfection defined as Class D to BS EN ISO 5817 shall be rectified and retested.

Corrosion protection of steel sheet piles (B12.5) Bracing and props

79.006

Unless otherwise stated in Appendix 79/4, areas of sheet piling as indicated on the Contract Drawings shall be coated as specified in ICE Specification clause B12.5.

79.007

Steel for walings and tie rods shall comply with Section 90 (Structural steelwork). Concrete for anchor blocks or thrust blocks shall be in accordance with Section 80 (Structural concrete).
