Pacific Gas and Electrics Substation Engineering Services department is responsible for over 1,000 substations throughout its service territory, which spans two-thirds of California. Using traditional CADD methods required not only limited resources devoting significant hours to substation design, but it also had the potential to generate errors that ultimately led to costly rework in the field.
Using Bentley Substation allowed the team to utilize 3D symbols with an integrated database to link and track all components of the project design. The company expects to gain over 40 percent efficiency on its physical arrangement designs by using 3D symbols and automatic project documentation. It also foresees a gain of over 40 percent efficiency on schematics by using intelligent and integrated designs.
Projected annual savings based on 120 internal projects is USD 1.9 million on physical arrangements and USD 2.8 million on schematics. By gaining accuracy and efficiency on engineering drawings, the expected construction savings could average 40 man-hours per project, or USD 1 million annually. Total projected annual savings is projected to be USD 5.7 million. Taking the learning curve into consideration, this project could have a return on investment in less than two years.

Shaw Power Group executed an engineering, procurement, and construction project to design and construct a 585 megawatt circulating fluidized bed (CFB) greenfield electric power generation station near St. Paul, Va. The USD 1.5 billion project included a 650 megawatt steam turbine generator and two CFB boilers, associated infrastructure and equipment, and vendor-supplied systems.
With four major areas of work being performed by various design firms using different design systems, Shaw configured Bentley PlantSpace so the vendor models were superimposed as one. The success of the Bentley PlantSpace, i-models, and Bentley Navigator coordination has resulted in Bentley Navigator becoming the preferred means of accessing all 3D design information at construction sites regardless of which CADD design system has been used.
The project was completed interference free with no rework on site because interferences were resolved in the 3D models. Design reviews were conducted efficiently and ahead of schedule by using i-models to collaborate and share information, and man-hours were reduced on site due to readily available, accurate quantities and 3D model visualization. ConstructSim, AutoPIPE, and Structural Modeler were also utilized.

The reasons for wind energys rise to prominence may be well known, but perhaps less well known is that wind energy now accounts for over one-third of all capital expenditure in power generation, second only to thermal (coal and gas-fired) plants. At this USD 30 million test site in the Netherlands, Ecofys was able to reduce costs and improve safety and efficiency of wind turbines through better management of project and asset information throughout the lifecycle.
The high-level project goal was to increase the scale and minimize the complexity of the wind turbines, reduce project and construction costs, and make operations and maintenance more efficient. Through the use of AssetWise configuration management technology from the nuclear industry reapplied to the wind energy industry for an offshore wind farm with 30x3 megawatt turbines, Ecofys estimates it will achieve cost savings of USD 4.3 million over a 20-year lifetime.
Ecofys first identified information sources and relationships from which it was possible to build an intelligent asset register and comprehensive data model, and then focused on replicating and streamlining workflows around administrative tasks such as permit-to-work requests and other health, safety, and environment issues. These procedures were modeled in AssetWise to provide efficient and tight control of the information.

INNOVATION IN GOVERNMENT
South Carolina Department of Transportation Outdoor Advertising Permitting System
Columbia, South Carolina, United States
The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) manages more than 6,400 active billboard permits, 3,180 inactive billboard permits, and 1,400 vegetation maintenance permits. The Outdoor Advertising Permitting System manages the application data including transfer of sites, revision of active permitted billboards, and the replacement of permit tags and allows sign owners to review their applications and permits online. Bentleys task was to integrate three permitting systems into one database that would allow for easy access of data, timely retrieval of information, a webbased interface, and a system that puts SCDOT on the cutting edge of billboard management. The application streamlines these workflows and manages data in a single database as well as transfers data residing in existing databases. The workflow-driven solution is now available to other DOTs.
SCDOT _ Outdoor Advertising Permitting ofTab_1 the citys information system, which also acts as an experimental laboratory municipal buildings, a priority for the municipality of Grenoble, System France, is toImages
optimize the management of municipal real estate. The goal of this project was to federate and exploit heterogeneous data from an Oracle real estate database, GIS, CAD software (DGN and DWG), and Bentley Map. The challenge was to offer a user-friendly solution without redundancy. for implementing ProjectWise and Bentley Map in other cities. The system integrates a design team distributed over multiple locations, facilitates rapid deployment of a project team, and accelerates information sharing and communications across project teams.

The city of Agra, India, had an intermittent water supply, with pumping stations operating for a few hours twice a day. The INR 34 billion Agra Water Supply Project will deliver an adequate supply of treated water 24/7. Undertaken by NJS Engineers for Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam, the project includes construction of a 144 million-liter-per-day water treatment plant, sedimentation tank, and 130-kilometer transmission pipeline.
NJS Engineers India Pvt. Ltd. JICA-assisted Agra Water Supply Project
Agra, India
Rehabilitation and repair of two water treatment plants, overhead tanks, clear water reservoirs, and distribution networks were also planned. WaterGEMS was used to develop a hydraulic model for existing, intermediate, and future water supply zones. The model was used to evaluate network flow, capacity, and pressure; plan system rehabilitation, improvement, and expansion; monitor non-revenue water; and develop efficient operational strategies.

AECOM India Pvt. Ltd. Sewerage Master Plan of Delhi for Delhi Jal Board
New Delhi, India
Charged with sewerage collection, treatment, and disposal in Indias capital city, Delhi Jal Board engaged AECOM India in association with WAPCOS to prepare a sewerage master plan for 2031. The plan considered existing infrastructure and a provision for new facilities, including unauthorized colonies and rural villages. The process combined survey and investigation, GIS integration, map scheme standardization, hydraulic modeling, and design and planning. Coupling hydraulic modeling in SewerGEMS with GIS visualization in Bentley Map and feature and attribute standardization in Bentley Water facilitated the interpretation of results for thousands of kilometers of survey data. Multiple iterations of more than 100 SewerGEMS submodels yielded optimal designs that were imported into one SewerGEMS file, possibly the largest integrated hydraulic model in India.

Frischmann Prabhu (India) Pvt. Ltd. Mega City Water Supply System
Panvel, India
Patterned after Dubais Media City and Qatars Energy City, the INR 15 billion mixed-used development called Mega City in Panvel, India, will create a sustainable satellite township on 1,400 acres. Frischmann Prabhu was retained to plan and design the water supply system including pipelines, and elevated and ground service reservoirs to serve a population of about 450,000. WaterGEMS was used to perform hydraulic modeling of scenarios involving various system constraints, and determine pipe diameters for different pump hours and water tank levels. The water supply scheme sources water from a government authority pipeline, transports the water 1 kilometer to a master balance reservoir, and pumps the water to three elevated ground service reservoirs at different elevations at 3, 5, and 10 kilometers distance from the master balance reservoir.

WAPCOS Limited Sewerage Master Plan of Delhi for the Year 2031
New Delhi, India
Delhi Jal Board engaged AECOM India in association with WAPCOS to prepare a sewerage master plan for year 2031 as part of its responsibilities for sewage collection, treatment, and disposal in Indias capital city. The project covered Delhi, its unauthorized colonies, and rural villages. The scope included a topographical survey and geotechnical investigation of 1,100 unauthorized colonies. Integrated survey data and population projections were transferred to SewerGEMS. Integration of the hydraulic model and GIS database introduced spatial visualization to the iterative design process. SewerGEMS reduced the time required for redesign based on site feasibility. WAPCOS also carried out a performance audit of 15 existing wastewater treatment plants, along with hydraulic modeling of trunk sewers.
