Nextreme's eTEC Technology Provides Hot Spot Cooling for iCs

ESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK. NCNextreme has developed an advanced thin film embedded thermoelectric cooler (eTEC) to address thermal management needs of the electronics, photonics, biotech, and defense/ aerospace industries. Functioning as a miniature, solid-state heal pump, the eTEC is ideal for cooling hot spots that result from localized areas of high heat flux on an !C. The nano-structured (hermoelectric thin film device is manufactured using semiconductor-processing techniques.

"The eTEC pumps heat from one place to another in the same manner that a water pump moves water," said Dr. Paul A. Magili. Nextreme Thermal Solutions VP Marketing and Business Deveiopment. "By pumping heat from low thermal conductivity materialsthe die and thermal interface materialsto a high diermal conductivity materiala heat spreader. the eTEC cools hot spots on ICs. The cooling of hot spots increa.scs product performance, reliability and yield while reducing system costs by simplifying downstream chip cooling requirements." e&pm

Building Performance Metrics Proposed at Fifth Danfoss Envisioneering Symposium

ALTIMORE, MD Seme 25 experts from the HVAC&R industry and the California market addressed growing concerns about the U.S. energy situation at the fifth Danfoss EnVisioneering Symposium. "Making Dollars and Sense of Energy Efficiency: A Focus on Conscrvatinn." June 5, 2007, at Ihe Westin Hotel in Long Beach, CA. One of ihe "big ideas" proposed was the concept of building performance metrics. That is. every commercial building should meet certain energy efficiency standards. If tied lo federal or state legislation (or both), such standards would give build-

ing owners the incentive lo implement improvements, resulting in higher energy efficiency across the building market. Those who don't meel the siandards would face the equivalent of a gas-guzzler tax. the group suggested. John Suzukida, president, Lanex Consulting. Shoreview. MN. served as moder:itt>r ol" a wrap-up session following the presentations. The sixth symposium is scheduled for October 23. 2007. in Washington, D.C. Details will be announced sixin.
