M.E. DEGREE EXAMINATION, NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2003 Elective CAD ED 032 DESIGN OF HYDRAULICS AND PNEUMATIC SYSTEMS (Common to M.E. Engineering Design) (Regulation 2002) Time: Three hours Answer ALL the questions. PART A (10 2 = 20 marks) 1. State the advantages of a positive displacement pumps over non positive displacement pumps? 2. What is a telescopic cylinder? When would it normally be used? 3. What is a servo valve? State its applications? 4. What is a shuttle valve? 5. What is a failsafe circuit? 6. Can a hydraulic cylinder be designed so that for the same pump flow, the extending and retracingin
speeds will be equal? Explain your answer?

7. What is meant by fluid conditioner? 8. How do pneumatic actuators differ from hydraulic actuators? 9. Show the pressure rating for any four pipe material used in pneumatic systems? 10. Classify pneumatic cylinders?

PART B (5 16 = 80 marks) 11. (i) Classify hydraulic pumps. Describe the working of rotary piston pumps? What are the advantages
of it? (ii) Explain meter in circuit and meter out circuit. Also mention their application. (8) (8) (16)

12. (a) Explain the construction and working of the following with neat sketches?
(i) (ii) Pilot operated check valve Pressure compensated flow control valve Or (b) Explain the functioning of the following valves with applications? (i) Counter balance valve. (ii) Unloading valve.

13. (a) Draw a neat sketch and explain the function of following.
(i) (ii) Hydraulic circuit for quick return mechanism. Pressure intensifier circuit Or

(b) What is an accumulator? State the application of accumulators. Explain the use of accumulator as leakage compensator with a hydraulic circuit? (16)

14. (a) Describe the operation of the fluid logic system as shown in fig 14(a).

FIG 14(a) Or (b) A pneumatic trip feed mechanism is to be designed with the following sequence (i) Holding the strip. (ii) Moving the strip forward on to the tool. (iii) Maintaining the strip in that position. (iv) Returning the feeding element to its original position after the work is over. Design the circuit for the above mentioned sequence with a neat sketch. (16)

(ii) Sketch a PLC based circuit for the extension and retraction of a cylinder and explain (b) (i) sketch the various hydro pneumatic feed circuits and explain. (ii) Write a note on application of hydraulic/pneumatic systems for robotic control?
